PARTNERS IN CRIME Bloody Scotland is an independent charity, established in 2012 to present the very best of Scottish and international crime writing. We rely on a combination of sponsorship, grants, box office and donations to support our activity. Our Partners in Crime Patron Scheme launched by leading Scottish crime writer Alanna Knight, allows our supporters to donate to the festival and help us continue to support the work of Scottish crime writers.

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS This year, our fifth festival, we are proud to welcome some of crime fiction’s biggest and best-loved names to Bloody Scotland. We kick off in style with an opening bill of Stuart MacBride and Caro Ramsay and the big names just keep on coming from there. Nicci French, Mark Billingham and Ian Rankin are appearing along with Val McDermid, MC Beaton and Martina Cole. Peter Robinson, Chris Brookmyre, Stuart Neville and Yrsa Sigurðardóttir also feature in a star-studded programme with authors from ten different countries. We have panels on forensics, soil science and witness identification; a play; a quiz; and the renewal of the Scotland-England crime writers football match.

As a Social Enterprise, with a strong ethical focus, Bookdonors is delighted to be able to support the excellent work of Bloody Scotland. We wholeheartedly endorse their initiatives to widen public access, and to support emerging and established authors alike. Bookdonors trades on-line in used books for the benefit of people, charities and the environment with 100% of sales used to fulfil our social missions. Each month we collect over 600,000 used books from Charity Shops across Scotland. Reusing these books means each year we divert over 2,000 tonnes of books from landfill. In turn that allows us to employ 32 people, many of whom might otherwise be excluded from the job market.

We hope you enjoy the free books we are distributing. If, however, you have already read the book, please come to our stand and we will gladly swap it for any title that takes your fancy. Whilst you are there we encourage you to speak to some of our staff that are assisting at the festival this weekend, to hear their individual stories too. Tom Murdoch-Kenny, Managing Director, Bookdonors CIC

DEVIL TAKE THE HINDMOST

The International Crime Fiction Convention

Incredibly, this is the fifth year of celebrating the best in crime fiction at Bloody Scotland in historic Stirling. The first few pages of our own history seem just moments ago and yet here we are in chapter five already. We hope we’ve captured your interest enough that you’re just dying to know what happens next.

BY MARTIN CATHCART FRODEN Winner of the Dundee International Book Prize. A gripping historical noir set during the amphetamine-fuelled craze for velodrome racing which took London by storm in the late 1920s.

Bloody Scotland would like to thank the following organisations for their support SPONSORS

We’ve got a fabulous line-up of authors, including some of the very biggest names in the business. We think it’s a varied programme, reflecting the differing strands of the most popular genre in fiction. As ever, events take place in a number of venues including the Golden Lion hotel as our festival hub for the first time this year. This year’s festival is the first since the passing of the great William McIlvanney, the man who, more than anyone, established the tradition of Scottish detective fiction. Bloody Scotland 2016 is dedicated in his honour and so too is the Scottish Crime Book of the Year, the winner of which will now be awarded The McIlvanney Prize.

FUNDERS

Making Bloody Scotland happen is a twelve-month operation and wouldn’t be possible without the goodwill and hard work of many people, including committee members, staff and volunteers. Just as importantly, we thank authors, chair people, publishers, funders, sponsors – particularly our new headline sponsors Bookdonors – patrons, readers and the city of Stirling. In particular, the committee would like to express our thanks and best wishes to our outgoing festival manager Dom Hastings. He’s been at the helm for the first four editions of Bloody Scotland and has done so much to help make it what it is.

For forensic soil scientist Professor Lorna Dawson, that’s in her job description. In fact, she was involved in similar work on a previous real life Sanday murder. Combining forensic fact and forensic fiction, this event will make you look at soil in a completely different way.

Are you the next big thing in crime writing? In this popular event, a line-up of aspiring novelists pitch their synopses to a panel of industry experts. Over the years many participants have gone on to secure publishing deals.

Meet two authors who have perfectly captured the grim atmosphere of Victorian Britain. In Oscar De Muriel’s A Fever of the Blood, a patient flees an Edinburgh lunatic asylum as a nurse lies dying, sparking a manhunt amid tales of horror and black magic. ES Thomson’s debut novel Beloved Poison is set in a crumbling London infirmary where the discovery of six tiny coffins unleashes evil among the squalor.

This year the panel is chaired by Literary Agent Jenny Brown and includes Katherine Armstrong, Senior Editor at Zaffre crime; Sam Eades, Commissioning Editor at Orion imprint Trapeze; Krystyna Green, Publishing Director at Constable Crime; and Adrian Searle, Publisher at Freight Books.

SUN 11TH | 10.00—11.00AM | GOLDEN LION WALLACE | £7.50/6.50 Does your crime fiction come dressed in a kilt and laced with porridge or is it just a story that could have been set anywhere? Despite being two Scots and a Northern Irishman, Gordon Brown, Steve Cavanagh and Mason Cross chose to set their crime novels in the good old US of A. Their pacy, high-octane thrillers are straight off the Hollywood playbook but have they really earned their stars and stripes? California-based Scot Catriona McPherson will find out if they can tell their APB from their BOLO.

SUN 11TH | 1.30—2.30PM | ALBERT HALLS | £9.50/8.50

Visit: www.destinationstirling.com

The stunning Orkney islands and their bleak, almost mythic landscape have proven an irresistible canvas for three of Scotland’s top crime writers to express their dark imaginations. Lin Anderson’s None but the Dead, Doug Johnstone’s Crash Land and the third of Louise Welsh’s Plague Times Trilogy are all set on these windswept islands. These three non-Orcadians will be guided by a real one, Orkney librarian and Twitter sensation Stewart Bain.

The crime wave of brilliant authors from the Nordic nations has become a tsunami and we have three of its freshest and most exciting exponents for you. Yrsa Sigurðardóttir is the Queen of Icelandic crime and her chilling novels are rightly gaining a worldwide audience. Agnes Ravatn is the new face of Norwegian crime writing and will be published in English for the first time this September with The Bird Tribunal. Erik Axl Sund – the pseudonym of Swedish punk rock musicians Jerker Eriksson and Hakan Axlander Sundquist – created the hit Victoria Bergman trilogy published as The Crow Girl in the UK.
