Get your passport stamped, check in, and earn prizes!

May 24–August 1

Pick up your passport, and take it with you to parks, events, programs, and camps. Have a staff member or parent initial the corresponding spot in the passport. Check-ins will be held throughout the summer for you to show us your passport and redeem it for prizes! The more parks, trails, and activities you have checked off, the more prizes you can choose from. Passports can be picked up at various Parks and Recreation facilities, summer camps, and more beginning in May. Not only do you get credit for participating in Bloomington Parks and Recreation programs, but also for play time and exercise like running, swimming, biking, sports, yoga, and games! Get extra credit for healthy activities like trying a new fruit or vegetable, drinking water, or trying a new kind of exercise. All current COVID-19 guidelines and protocols will be implemented to make Passport to Play safe and fun for all this summer. Please be prepared to wear a mask and remain socially distant as part of all Passport programs and check-ins. The Bloomington Junior League Baseball Association (BJLBA, ages 5–12 yrs.) and the Monroe County Senior League Baseball Association (MCSLBA, ages 13–18 yrs.), in partnership with Bloomington Parks and Recreation, announces the opening of baseball league registration for players of all skill levels. Women in Nature Gaining Skills (W.I.N.G.S.)

Women in Nature Gaining Skills (W.I.N.G.S.) encourages and empowers women through teaching skills needed to partake in outdoor recreation activities in south central Indiana. Each W.I.N.G.S. event features woman-led, hands-on training, with the goal of building a community of women interested in the outdoors. Creepy Crawlies

Learn more about our boneless friends in this program that explores the differences between insects and invertebrates. Flip over logs and stones to see what’s underneath, meet and identify different bugs, and find out why they are such vital parts of our environment. Instructor: Kate Seader

How can you tell what an owl ate? Have a hoot and dissect some owl pellets! We will attempt to reconstruct the skeletal remains in discarded owl pellets to see what our feathered friends have been eating. Night Paddle

Experience an evening of peace and serenity on Griffy Lake during the full moon. Navigate the lake, take deep breaths of fresh air, and watch the night sky light up the water. Paddle Power!

Practice the proper techniques for controlling the speed and direction of a canoe or kayak during this class on Griffy Lake. We will discuss proper paddling techniques and water safety— we might even stage a race across the lake! Fossil Frenzy

Ever wonder what walked/crawled/swam where you are standing, millions of years ago? Have you found interestinglooking rocks, and wanted to learn more? Join us in our hunt for the fossils of Indiana. Expect a short introduction on what to look for followed by a hike (about a half mile round trip) to Griffy Creek to scour the fossil beds. Wellness on Water

Classes start with a short land lesson reviewing simple safety tips and practical information for success on the water. You will be supported and coached on how to enter and exit the board from the dock, how to paddle from various positions (including kneeling and sitting), how to paddle for power and speed, simple turns and how to return to your board from the water. (Swimming is prohibited, but occasionally someone falls off the board, typically when they are feeling confident and trying more challenging skills). Participants age 14 yrs. and younger must be accompanied by a registered adult. Participants are encouraged to bring a water bottle; life jackets are provided.

SUP for Parents and Kids

This class is perfect for kids under the age of 16 yrs. interested in learning how to stand up paddle (SUP) and their parent(s) who wish to learn alongside them. You don’t have to STAND on a paddleboard; there are paddling options for those who would rather kneel or sit. Completion of this class will give parents and kids the confidence they need for future independent lake trips. We’ll explore the lake refining our paddling techniques while looking for interesting wildlife from this fun perspective.

Mushroom Foray

Find out where to search for and how to prepare the many edible wild mushrooms our environment provides. The program begins with a brief introduction to common and easy-to-identify edible mushrooms, followed by a hike to search for edible fungi. Did you know that stand-up paddleboarding is gaining attention as a new fitness and activity option for aging adults? Balance, strength, breath-all of these practices come together on the board. You can still enjoy a paddleboard even if you don’t stand! This class is the same as our Learn to Paddle class but is specifically for those over age 50 yrs. We’ll paddle to a quiet spot on the water, refining our paddling technique, looking for interesting wildlife from this fun perspective. We’ll find a quiet spot for a rest and meditation in a comfortable seated or reclined position.

SUP Solstice Paddle and Meditation

Enjoy the longest day of the year from the water. Plan on a quick review of stand up paddle (SUP) safety tips on land and light coaching on the water. It is best if you already know how to paddle or have previously taken one of our SUP classes. We’ll paddle to the middle of the lake, try some light stretching and simple yoga poses if you choose to join in, then settle in for a quiet observation of the beauty around us. We’ll start with a short, guided meditation, followed by several minutes of quiet and stillness. Connect to nature and Mother Earth on this very special occasion.

SUP Yoga Introduction

This class is appropriate for those new to yoga and newer to stand up paddleboarding (SUP). We recommend trying the SUP Learn to Paddle class before taking this class if you have never tried a paddleboard before. We will review some of the skills necessary to successfully paddle, starting with a safety talk and land lesson, followed by further instruction on the water. We’ll paddle to a nearby cove, drop anchors (included) and try some common yoga poses. This class is great for those who hope to spend more time on the water.

Meet Trainer Katie Clementi

I have been working as a personal trainer for the past three years. I am a Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Nutrition Specialist through International Sports Science Association (ISSA). I have personal background in bodybuilding and athletic training (basketball, track, volleyball, soccer). I have worked with many different people, with goals ranging from weight loss to weight gain, functional movements, strength, athletic performance and body recomp. I’ve learned that through fitness and working out your overall quality of life, both emotionally and physically, can improve drastically! The data collected from a fitness assessment gives you a starting point, and provides a baseline to compare to as you make progress toward your fitness goals. Members must register at the TLRC front desk. Registration for group exercise classes extends through the first week of each session. Classes that do not meet the minimum registration requirements after the first week will be cancelled for that session.

Cancellation policy

Full refunds are given for all classes cancelled by the Twin Lakes Recreation Center. Refund requests for any other reason must be submitted prior to the first day of class, and are subject to approval according to State Board of Accounts claim procedures. Allow four weeks for refund requests to be processed.

Beginning Yoga

This class focuses on posture alignment, freeing the shoulder girdle and pelvis, and synchronizing movement and breathing through basic yoga poses. The word hatha (lit force, sun) symbolizes a system of physical techniques integrating body, mind, and spirit. This mixed-level Hatha yoga class uses asanas (bodily postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and dyana (meditation techniques) with the goal of bringing about a healthy body and a clear, peaceful mind. The asanas work to make the spine supple, the core strong and supple and to promote circulation in the organs, glands, and tissues. Hatha yoga postures strengthen and stretch the body, promoting balance and flexibility. Great for those with arthritis. Yoga Core

ZUMBA Gold

ZUMBA Gold is a class of Latin-inspired dance aerobics for seniors and those new to ZUMBA. This class focuses on coordination, discipline and self-confidence in a fun and safe environment. Excel TKD is taught by Master Emeline O’Connor, a 4th-degree black belt with more than 20 years of experience. Some of her achievements include multiple National and Junior Olympic Championships in the AAU and USSSA organizations, AAU and USSSA National team member, and the first woman to be inducted in the USSSA Hall of Fame. Bloomington Walking Club

We’ve missed lacing up our shoes and We’re Not Runners walking with you! The Bloomington Walking Club will meet for a weekly walk every Bloomington Walking Club Thursday, May through October. The Bloomington Walking Club is an informal group that walks from one to three miles on paved paths and natural trails in and around city parks. All ability levels are welcome, and walkers choose their own pace. The Bloomington Walking Club is dog- and stroller-friendly.

Bloomington Parks and Recreation and the LMSA offer two types of sailing experiences: keel boat and small boat. Keel Boat: No previous sailing experience is required. Instruction includes rigging, sailing and docking keel boats approximately 25' long. This two-day class is appropriate for those with limitations that make handling small boats difficult. Small Boat: This two-day class offers a simple way to get started in sailing! Successful completion qualifies participants to take a one-day US Sailing Certification skills test that, when passed, provides sailors access to LMSA’s fleet of small boats. Fall Adult Softball Leagues

Bloomington Parks and Recreation offers USA Softball Association-sanctioned leagues designed to accommodate all levels of play. USA Softball rules apply with local modifications as stated in the Adult Softball League Handbook. The Adult Softball League Handbook and other valuable information can be found at bloomington.in.gov/softball. Co-Rec, Men’s, and Women’s leagues: $675 for 10 games Games are played at Twin Lakes Sports Park. June 14–July 14: Teams register online (including tentative roster).

Go to bloomington.in.gov/softball and click on the green “Register Now” button. Choose day and league (see below). Staff reserves the right to adjust league placement if necessary. After registering online, pay a minimum deposit of half the league fee. League fee payment instructions, final payment due date, final roster due date, manager’s meeting date, and master game schedules will be sent via email following online registration. All teams that register and pay the full team fee by the registration deadline will be eligible to win a prize at the manager’s meeting. League play begins the week of August 2. Co-Rec begins August 8.
