Dear Booksellers, Librarians, Teachers, Book Lovers, and Friends, Break out the bubbly! The Bloomsbury USA Children’s list turns ten this fall. It is with great pride (and an affectionate tear or two) that we reflect on a decade, and with wholehearted excitement that we look to the next! From our very first list of twenty books, we’ve quickly expanded to publish nearly a hundred books a year. What an honor and joy it has been bringing these books into the world—working with our outstanding authors and illustrators, and the talented, dedicated in-house team. Even during such remarkable growth, Bloomsbury prides itself on a unique, nurturing atmosphere that thrives on creating quality books for children. Some of the very first authors we published continue to headline the list. Lyrical and eloquent, Shannon Hale’s writing in her first novel, The Goose Girl, wowed us all. Shannon went on to win a Newbery Honor with Princess Academy, so it is especially fitting that we crown the Fall 2012 list with its highly anticipated sequel, Palace of Stone. Likewise, bestseller E. D. Baker made her debut in 2002 with The Frog Princess, and eleven books—and one Disney blockbuster film later—she is still going strong, with the second book in her Tales of the Wide-Awake Princess series coming this season. We are delighted to launch new talent as well. Online darling Sarah J. Maas makes her print debut this fall with Throne of Glass, a young adult novel that we simply can’t stop talking about. Evocative writing, breathless romance, and a page-turning plot—this is an author we know we’ll be recommending for another ten years, at least. From the start, the Bloomsbury list featured British and American fiction. We work intimately with our UK editors and designers to share the best and brightest talent on both sides of the pond. This season one of our marquee authors, Celia Rees, makes a stunning departure from her sweeping, epic historical fiction. To see Celia in a whole new but equally thrilling light, don’t miss This Is Not Forgiveness. Together with our sister imprint, Walker Books for Young Readers, we thank you for all the reading and recommending, the hand-holding and hand-selling you have done so generously for us and our authors. We look forward to celebrating with you this year, and to continuing to work together to create great books. It is a very happy birthday, indeed!
With warmest regards from the entire team at Bloomsbury

Coming down from the mountain to a new life in the city seems a thrill beyond imagining. When Miri and her friends from Mount Eskel set off to help the future princess Britta prepare for her royal wedding, she is happy about her chance to attend school in the capital city. There, Miri befriends students who seem so sophisticated and exciting . . . until she learns that they have some frightening plans. They think that Miri will help them, that she should help them. Soon Miri finds herself torn between loyalty to the princess and her new friends’ ideas, between an old love and a new crush, and between her small mountain home and the bustling city.
“I’ll always come home, Pa.” But a shiver of uncertainty had entered her. She sat in the back of a wagon as it drove away, her eyes taking in every last image of home: her house built of gray rubble rock, the white gleam of linder shards marking the paths, the jagged cliffs of the quarry, and the grand, white-tipped head of Mount Eskel. She felt night-blind and afraid, as if walking a path that might lead to sheer cliff and empty air. The lowlands were so far away, she could scarcely believe they existed. Once she was in the lowlands, would home seem like a dream too? She glimpsed Pa and Marda one last time before the road bent, and all sign of the village was gone from sight.
“Palace of Stone, for me, bears two hallmarks of a great book—a story that I found myself daydreaming about and characters that I miss now that I have finished the novel.” —Cynthia Richards, Northshire Bookstore “It was lovely to be reunited with the girls of Mount Eskel. Miri’s itch to know and learn takes her to the capital city, where intrigue surrounds Britta and the royal family. Where in Princess Academy she found her strengths, now Miri has to find the best way to use them—and quickly. Politically challenging, thought-provoking, and genuinely heartwarming, Hale’s newest is one I can’t wait to handsell.”
“The book is a fresh approach to the traditional princess story with unexpected plot twists and great emotional resonance.” —2006 Newbery Committee ★“[A]n unalloyed joy.” —Kirkus, starred review “[A] magical read!” —Discovery Girls ★“Hale weaves an intricate, multilayered story about families, relationships, education, and the place we call home.” —SLJ, starred review “I believe it’s a book for everybody. There are adventures and dangers, and the most compelling, believable, poignant love story I have read in many a year.” —Orson Scott Card

“Why is there two of everybody?” asked Simon, noticing the doppelganger for the very first time. If the concept was difficult for Catherine and Jason to understand, imagine how absurd the whole thing sounded to Simon’s six-year-old brain when his father tried to explain to him. When he had finished, Simon had only one question and he directed it to his older self. “When you’re eight,” he said, “do people still boss you around?” “They sure do,” said Simon. “All the time.” “Darn,” said Simon, chomping away on the giant wad of gum. “Nothing to look forward to.” “I have a question,” Olivia said softly. “Being that there are two of everyone but me, what do we do now?” No one spoke, but they all seemed to agree that, yes, something had to be done.

Buckle your space harness for the next two episodes in an (inter)stellar new series. In The Enemy’s Lair, the Star Fighters find themselves in a tough spot. They thought the Meigwors were on their side in the fight to save Earth. But it turns out they’re an even bigger galactic menace than the Xions! Peri and Diesel need to return Xion’s kidnapped prince, but to do so means angering the Meigwors. And that’s a big problem. Because Selene, the third crewmember of the Phoenix, is being held prisoner on the Meigwor planet. In Crash Landing, Peri and Diesel locate Selene, but while trying to escape the cross-fire of two alien enemies, they get sucked into a mysterious planet’s atmosphere. They survive the crash-landing, only to face the planet’s natives . . . who are not pleased to have visitors.

★ “A haunting tragicomic drama of grief and renewal.” —The Horn Book, starred review
A searing psychological mystery from an acclaimed author When Jason Milwaukee’s best friend, Sunshine, disappears from the face of the earth, the whole town, including Jason, starts searching for her. But the insistent voices in Jason’s head won’t let him get to the heart of the mystery— he’s schizophrenic, and the voices make it hard to know what is real and what is not. As the chase becomes more panicked, Jason’s meds start wearing off, and he is looking more and more guilty. But of what, exactly? Both brilliantly witty and intensely honest, this poignant novel draws upon the author’s many years as an adolescent psychologist, but it’s Vaught’s powerful voice and expertly crafted mystery that will keep the pages turning.

She faced the Prince. “Well?” Dorian leaned back in his throne. “My father needs someone to aid the empire — His champion would keep his opponents quiet.” “As quiet as the grave,” she said sweetly. A smile tugged on Dorian’s lips, but he kept his face straight. “Yes.” To work for the King of Adarlan as his loyal servant. She raised her chin. To kill for him — to be a fang in the mouth of the beast that had already consumed half of Erilea . . . “And if I accept?” “Then, after six years, he’ll grant you your freedom.” “Six years!” But the word freedom echoed through her once more. “If you decline,” Dorian said, anticipating her next question, “you’ll remain in Endovier.” His sapphire eyes became hard, and she swallowed. And die here, was what he didn’t need to add.

This inspired fantasy upends not one, but two popular fairytales When Petunia, the youngest of King Gregor’s twelve dancing daughters, is invited to visit an elderly friend in the neighboring country of Westfalin, she welcomes the change of scenery. But in order to reach Westfalin, Petunia must pass through a forest where strange two-legged wolves are rumored to exist. Wolves intent on redistributing the wealth of the noble citizens who have entered their territory. But the bandit-wolves prove more rakishly handsome than truly dangerous, and it’s not until Petunia reaches her destination that she realizes the kindly grandmother she has been summoned to visit is really an enemy bent on restoring an age-old curse. The stories of Red Riding Hood and Robin Hood get a twist as Petunia and her many sisters take on bandits, grannies, and the new King Under Stone to end their family curse once and for all.

“An entertaining boy-and-dog adventure set against a not-oftendepicted era of political strife.” —Kirkus Reviews
Hailee’s caught the ultimate lucky break—winning the lottery! Hailee Richardson never realized how much she hated her Salvation Army life and Goodwill accessories until the night her family wins the lottery. All of a sudden she’s no longer the only girl at school without a cell phone or a brand-new bike! And the newfound popularity that comes with being a lottery winner is just what she’s always dreamed of. But the glow of her smartphone and fancy new clothes wears off when Hailee is transferred to Magnolia Academy, a private school. All of a sudden, her best friend and parents seem shabby compared to the beautiful Magnolia moms and the popular bad-girl Nikki, who seems to want to be her friend. Now, Hailee wants nothing more than to grow up—and away—from her old life. It’ll take one very busy social networking page, a stolen first kiss, and a whole carton of eggs for Hailee to realize that not all luck is good, not all change is bad, and a best friend who’s just a call away will always be more valuable than a phone. All’s fair in love, war, and band auditions Best friends Tatum and Lori are used to doing everything together— including a clarinet/flute duet for District Honor Band auditions. But all that changes when Michael transfers to their middle school, and into their band. Suddenly, not only is he competing for Tatum’s spot on stage, but he’s stealing Lori, too. Tatum doesn’t like change no matter its form: not with her good friend Aaron, who seems to believe her fib that they’re secretly boyfriend and girlfriend. And not with her mom either, who, to cope with a separation from her dad, is performing in community theater, of all things! Amy Fellner Dominy composes an equally heartwarming and hilarious story of how holding tight to the status quo can mean missing out on the future— and how oftentimes the best way to move forward is by going solo.

Originally from a world beyond our own, DIRK LLOYD lives in the town of Whiteshields, England, where he spends most of his time trying to get back home to his Iron Tower in the Darklands. Some of his achievements include: building the Iron Tower of Despair, raising vast armies of Orcs and Goblins, the casting of mighty spells and enchantments (including the spell that forced JAMIE THOMSON to submit to his will and record his life story), and excelling in English, science, and math classes in school.

The Dark Lord is confounded when he awakens in the middle of a small town on a planet he’s never seen before. What is this strange place, why do they keep calling him Dirk Lloyd, and why is he powerless against these earthlings who insist on finding his parents? Could it be that Dirk Lloyd is really a human incarnation of the Dark Lord who, after a cataclysmic final battle with his arch nemesis, was hurled into the Pit of Uttermost Despair, aka Earth? Or is he just a lost and confused boy? The Dark Lord must regain his rightful place in the universe before his powers of domination and destruction are lost forever, and he’s shocked to find help comes from a most unlikely source . . . a human friend.

“Do you know your address, Dirk? Can you tell us what happened?” asked Officer Johnson. “Not Dirk, Dark! And my address is the Iron Tower of Despair, beyond the Plains of Desolation, in the Darklands. And I haven’t been ‘hit by a car’ . . . Er, what is a car?” The two police officers exchanged bemused glances. “Yup, looks like this one’s for social services. I think they’ll need a child psychologist, as well,” replied Johnson. “No, not Dirk, it’s Dark, and I’m not a boy!” said the boy desperately, but they didn’t seem to take much notice of him. A wave of weakness came over him and he sighed resignedly. Dirk it is then, he thought to himself. For now. Until he got his powers back. Then they would know him by his full name and title, that was for sure!

This A-lister has it all . . . the grades, the boys, and the friends. But can she survive “the Big C?” Mia is always looking for signs. A sign that she should get serious with her soccer-captain boyfriend. A sign that she’ll get the grades to make it into an Ivy-league school. One sign she didn’t expect to look for was: “Will I survive cancer?” It’s a question her friends would never understand, prompting Mia to keep her illness a secret. The only one who knows is her lifelong best friend, Gyver, who is poised to be so much more. Mia is determined to survive, but when you have so much going your way, there is so much more to lose. From debut author Tiffany Schmidt comes a heart-wrenching and ultimately uplifting story of one girl’s search for signs of life in the face of death.
TIFFANY SCHMIDT grew up in Massachusetts where she spent a significant part of her childhood getting into mischief and sitting in the naughty chair. All those time outs turned out to be a blessing; they forced her to sit still long enough to hone her storytelling skills. She now lives in Pennsylvania with her saintly husband and impish twin boys. Send Me a Sign is her first novel. www.tiffanyschmidt.net

From high above the crowd, I can spot Uncle Sam on his stilts. I can see strands of customers, their bodies woven into glistening ropes of flesh as they line up for food. I can see the candy apple stand, its neon light glowing red against the crowd. But I don’t see my sister anywhere. Long before our births, we shared the same space in our mother’s body. The chances of our simple existence are one in millions. No matter where I am, no matter where she is, I have always felt her presence from somewhere within myself. Until this moment. It is as though the thread connecting us has snapped, like something deep within me has been severed. She is simply gone.

Rachel and Alice are an extremely rare kind of identical twins—so identical that even their aunt and uncle, whom they’ve lived with since their parents passed away, can’t tell them apart. But the sisters are connected in a way that goes well beyond their surfaces: when one experiences pain, the other exhibits the exact same signs of distress. So when one twin mysteriously disappears, the other immediately knows something is wrong—especially when she starts experiencing serious physical traumas, despite the fact that nobody has touched her. As the search commences to find her sister, the twin left behind must rely on their intense bond to uncover the truth. But is there anyone around her she can trust, when everyone could be a suspect? And ultimately, can she even trust herself? Master storyteller Jessica Warman will keep readers guessing when everything they see—and everything they are told—suddenly becomes unreliable in this page-turning literary thriller.

“An interesting, in-depth exploration of the implications of time travel and it’s effect on reality . . .” —School Library Journal
Take a trip back to Robin Hood’s era in search of the Holy Grail When a British computer hacker finds his name coded into a centuriesold manuscript, TimeRider Maddy recognizes it as the same message she had also been sent. Sure it must be communication from other TimeRiders agents, she sends Liam and the two support units back to Robin Hood’s time to search for the fabled document—which might be the Holy Grail. But as a war begins to brew between King Richard and his brother John, Liam unwittingly takes on the role of the Sheriff of Nottingham and discovers that the mythical Robin Hood may have been another support unit all along. This action-packed reimagining of the Robin Hood legend weaves elements of religion, alternative history, and time-travel ethics perfect for fans of The DaVinci Code, into a page-turner old and new fans alike won’t want to miss.

Jessica Warman’s spinechilling, suspenseful breakout novel
The time-bending adventure series continues with a trip back into prehistoric times Liam, Maddy, and Sal are TimeRiders, teens who’ve been saved from certain death to prevent time travel from destroying history—and the future. But when Maddy mistakenly opens a time window, Liam is marooned sixty-five million years in the past, in the hunting ground of a deadly species of prehistoric predator. Liam’s only hope is to make contact with Maddy and Sal before he’s hunted down by dinosaurs, and without altering history so much that the world is overtaken by a terrifying new reality. “Scarrow blends adventure with history in a way that goes down painlessly. Readers will be intrigued, puzzled—and ready for the next one.”—Kirkus Reviews

Inside the closed community of Borough Park, where most Chassidim live, the rules people live by are determined by an ancient script written thousands of years ago—and abuse has never been a part of it. But when thirteen-yearold Gittel learns that her best friend has suffered abuse at the hands of a family member, the adults in her community try to persuade Gittel, and themselves, that nothing happened. Forced to remain silent, Gittel begins to question everything she was raised to believe.
