BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. We are the first commercial publisher to pilot such a model. Our hope is to engage a more diverse set of authors, bringing their work to a wider global audience.
In this pilot phase we aim to make 20 frontlist titles in African Studies and International Development OA immediately upon publication. The titles, including some from Bloomsbury’s renowned Zed Books imprint, are due to publish between March 2024 and February 2025.
• Contribute to a progressive OA funding model that aims to make 20 research titles available OA
• Receive 1 year’s access to 194 backlist titles in African Studies and International Development
• Be publicly acknowledged on our website
• If we do not raise enough funds to publish the titles OA, receive permanent access to all 20 frontlist titles
• If we raise 50% of our target funding and can only publish 10 titles OA, receive permanent access to the 10 titles that are not made OA

Veysel Apaydin, IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society, University College London, UK
Narrating Heritage critically examines the links among heritage, rights and social justice This book brings important original ethnographic research and unique case studies together in a coherent and cohesive way to examine patterns and differences of approaches to heritage It exposes discourses of the uses and abuses of heritage, and provides narratives of persistence, demonstrating the importance of heritage in securing human rights and social justice Drawing on over ten years of research and ethnographic fieldwork based on six complex case studies from Turkey and comparing them with case studies from across the world, the book explores a variety of social, political, cultural and economic heritage discourses, making explicit the relationship between cultural and natural heritage

Of all avian groups, birds of prey in particular have long been a prominent subject of fascination in many human societies This book demonstrates that the art and materiality of human engagements with raptors has been significant through deep time and across the world, from earliest prehistory to Indigenous thinking in the present day Drawing on a wide range of global case studies and a plurality of complementary perspectives, it explores the varied and fluid dynamics between humans and birds of prey as evidenced in this diverse art-historical and archaeological record

Knossos is one of the most important sites in the ancient Mediterranean It remained amongst the largest settlements on the island of Crete from the Neolithic until the late Roman times, but aside from its size it held a place of particular significance in the mythological imagination of Greece and Rome as the seat of King Minos, the location of the Labyrinth and the home of the Minotaur

Studies in Honor of Susan A Stephens
Edited by Benjamin Acosta-Hughes, Ohio State University, USA, Jacqueline Arthur-Montagne, University of Virginia, USA & Phiroze Vasunia, University College London, UK
In this book, leading Greek scholars explore the rich and diverse poetry and prose of the long Hellenistic period Chapters focus on the poets of Alexandria such as Callimachus, Theocritus, Apollonius, and Posidippus and on prose texts written in Greek in the Roman Empire This volume demonstrates the versatility of this literature and examines its multiple cultural affiliations. The Hellenistic writers emerge from this volume as complex, playful, and politically engaged figures, interested in the relationship between culture and society, and far removed from the stereotype of them as distant or elitist This book makes a major contribution to the study of Hellenistic Greek culture

This volume offers the first annotated English translation of the first two books of On Celibacy (1473) by the eminent Venetian humanist Ermolao Barbaro (1454-93); Books 3 and 4 of On Celibacy are presented, along with Barbaro’s On the Duty of the Ambassador, in the companion piece to this first volume. Setting out the historical context that crucially conditions Barbaro’s advocacy of the celibate life in Books 1 and 2, the introduction examines how On Celibacy seeks to justify a contemplative existence that rejects the career path expected of a figure of Barbaro’s standing.

This book offers the first annotated translation in English of two works of the eminent Venetian humanist, Ermolao Barbaro (1454-93) Books 3 and 4 of On Celibacy seek to justify a contemplative existence at a far remove from the active life and career-path expected of a figure of Barbaro’s standing within the Venetian patriciate; Books 1 and 2 of On Celibacy are presented in the companion piece to this second volume The second work presented here is Barbaro’s short treatise On the Duty of Ambassador based on Barbaro’s own practical experience as a Venetian envoy abroad, this treatise outlines the conduct expected of the dedicated career diplomat

Lucy R. Nicholas, King’s College London, UK Roger Ascham's most famous works, The Scholemaster and Toxophilus, have been extensively excerpted in studies on prose style and English humanism By contrast, his Latin works that centred on theology and key Reformation concerns have languished in the shadows of modern scholarship Ascham’s Themata Theologica (Theological Propositions) is one of these This little-known text of eleven ‘themes’ offers a rare opportunity both to trace the course of Ascham’s own religious development and examine the confessional climate at Cambridge University during one of the most turbulent periods of the Reformation

From Puns to Poetics
Naomi Scott, University of Nottingham, UK
In ancient Greek comedy, nothing is ever ‘just a joke’ This book treats jokes with the seriousness they deserve, and shows that far from being mere surface-level phenomena, jokes in Greek comedy are in fact a site of poetic experimentation whose creative force expressly rivals that of serious literature

Martine Diepenbroek, University of Bristol, UK
This book offers a comprehensive review and reassessment of the classical sources describing the cryptographic Spartan device known as the scytale Challenging the view promoted by modern historians which see the scytale as a simple ‘stick’, Diepenbroek argues for its deserved status as a vehicle for secret communication in the ancient world By way of comparison, Diepenbroek demonstrates that the cryptographic principles employed in the Spartan scytale show an encryption and coding system that is no less complex than some 20th-century transposition ciphers

Bringing together a group of experts from across the globe, this volume brings vital new material to the attention of the law and literature movement

Presenting a new perspective on human–animal relations in the ancient Near East, this volume considers how we should understand equids (horses, donkeys, onagers and various hybrids) as animals that are social actors Recht brings together a wealth of new data, including Bronze Age Near Eastern material culture from a range of archaeological contexts with equid remains as well as iconography and texts. She looks in particular at finds of equids themselves from burials, sacred space and settlements alongside associated artefacts such as chariots and harnesses

Nicolette A. Pavlides, University of Edinburgh, UK
This book examines the hero-cults of Sparta on the basis of the archaeological and literary sources
Nicolette Pavlides explores the local idiosyncrasies of a pan-Hellenic phenomenon, which itself can help us understand the place and function of heroes in Greek religion Although it has long been noted that hero-cult was especially popular in Sparta, there is little known about the cults, both in terms of material evidence and the historical context for their popularity The evidence from the cult of Helen and Menelaos at the Menelaion, the worship of Agamemnon and Alexandra/Kassandra, the Dioskouroi, and others who remain anonymous to us, is viewed as a local phenomenon reflective of the developing communal and social consciousness of the polis

Curse Tablets and Society
Stuart McKie, The Open University, UK
"[A] very full and detailed treatment of curse tablets ... [with] an imaginative but convincing reconstruction of their use and context." Roger Tomlin, University of Oxford, UK
Focusing on the Roman west, this book examines the rituals of cursing, their cultural contexts, and their impact on the lives of those who practised them This study not only encourages greater understanding of the individual practice of curse rituals but also reveals how these objects can inform ongoing debates surrounding power, agency and social relationships in the Roman provinces

Edited by Manolis Pagkalos, University of Groningen, the Netherlands & Andrea Scarpato, De Montfort University, UK
This volume fills a gap in current research on the Hellenistic Peloponnese, complementing and challenging traditional interpretations by adopting new perspectives on its complex social and political history The individual chapters promote interdisciplinary approaches to ancient evidence and examine aspects of the region's interstate relations, contemporary politics and modes of representation that have been relatively little studied to date Together they afford a much more well-rounded picture of the Hellenistic Peloponnese and form a rich basis for broadening scholarly debate and stimulating further research on the area
