Elegy and Politics in a Time of Revolution

Looking in detail at key themes and topics of Hadrian’s life, the title explores his Spanish background, his military service and initiatives of peace, his architectural legacy such as the Pantheon, his villa at Tivoli, his love of Athens and Athenian culture, his relationship with Antinous, and how he dealt with Christians and Jews. The book explores these contradictions and complexities, and pieces together the picture of a man, his life, times and influence. In addition to this, it covers social aspects of life in the Roman empire in the second century: slavery, Roman baths and hygiene, the public spectacles of circus races, gladiatorial fights, and animal hunts.

This introduction combines aesthetic analysis with socio-political context to provide a concise but comprehensive portrait of the Roman elegy, its main participants and its cultural and political milieu. Focusing on a series of specific poems, the title portrays the development of the genre in the context of the Emperor Augustus’ ascent to power, to build an understanding of the relationship between poetry and an increasingly totalising regime.

“The perfect introduction to this fascinating and elusive emperor.” Peter Thonemann, Wadham College, Oxford, UK

“A stylish and pioneering study, provocative and informative in equal measure.” Roger Rees, University of St. Andrews, UK

Kathryn Tempest A student-friendly, accessible and comprehensive guide to Cicero, combining analysis of his works with biographical and historical detail. Including helpful features such as detailed chronological tables, a glossary and a guide to Greek and Roman authors and maps, the volume balances background and contextual information with analysis and explanation of Cicero's works. Organised chronologically and according to some of his most famous speeches, Cicero will appeal to anyone with an interest in Roman history, oratory and politics in the ancient world. “By the end of the book, readers will appreciate the complexity not only of Cicero's character, but also of the extraordinary shift from republic to empire. Notes and Vocabulary by Katharine Radice Introduction by Catherine Steel

Introduction, Notes and Vocabulary by John Godwin

This annotated edition of Cicero's De Imperio for AS level Latin provides an overview of the historical and political context, and the rhetorical and literary devices employed by Cicero in this speech. Detailed commentary notes accompanying the Latin text gloss difficult words and phrases explain references to Cicero’s contemporary politics, and highlight instances of oratorical usage. This is the prescribed edition of one of the set texts for OCR’s AS GCE Classics Latin qualification, for examination from 2015 to 2017 inclusive. MARCUS TULLIUS CICERO (106–43 BCE) was a Roman lawyer, orator, politician, and philosopher. His life coincided with the last days of the Roman Republic and his works reflect the turmoil of that period. KATHARINE RADICE teaches Latin and Greek at Westminster School, London, UK. CATHERINE STEEL is Professor of Classics, University of Glasgow, UK.

Edited by David Stuttard Euripides' Medea is one of the most often read, studied and performed of all Greek tragedies. It is unusual among Greek dramas for its acute portrayal of female psychology. The play is a product of the political and social world of fifth-century Athens and an understanding of its original context, as well as a consideration of the responses of later ages, is crucial to appreciating this work and its legacy. This collection of essays by leading academics addresses these issues, exploring key themes such as revenge, character, mythology, the end of the play, the chorus and Medea's role as a witch. Other essays look at the play's context, religious connotations, stagecraft and reception. The essays are accompanied by David Stuttard's English translation of the play. DAVID STUTTARD is founder of the theatre company, Actors of Dionysus, translator of numerous Greek plays, and author of titles including Parthenon, Power and Politics on the Acropolis (2013), Looking at Lysistrata (Bloomsbury, 2010) and The Romans Who Shaped Britain (2012). Looking at Medea

This annotated edition of Metamorphoses Book III for AS level Latin contains the Latin text as well as in-depth commentary notes which provide language support, explain difficult words and phrases, highlight literary features, and supply background knowledge. The introduction presents an overview of Ovid and the historical and literary context, as well as a plot synopsis and a discussion of the literary genre and metre. Lists of vocabulary and suggested reading are also included. This is the prescribed edition of one of the set texts for OCR’s AS GCE Classics Latin qualification, for examination from 2015 to 2017 inclusive.

Euripides: Alcestis Niall W. Slater

An Introduction, Text and Commentary T.J. Leary The post-classical compilation known to modern scholarship as the Latin Anthology contains a collection of a hundred riddles, each consisting of three hexameters and preceded by a lemma. It would seem that these riddles were composed spontaneously at a dinner to celebrate the Roman Saturnalia. The work was to have a defining influence on later collections of riddles; yet its title has been debated, and almost nothing is known about its author. This edition of the riddles includes the original Latin text, a new English translation, in-depth commentary notes and a comprehensive introduction, and examines more fully than before the sociological, archaeological and literary background of the riddles.

This accessible introduction discusses the influential play's themes, historical context and modern critical responses, and includes a history of its performance and adaptation, providing context and analysis for those studying the play in English and the original Greek. Marilyn Dunn

Caillan Davenport & Jennifer Manley

This is a complete overview of the religious history of the Germanic peoples of continental Europe covering their entrance to the Roman world and conversion to Christianity. Drawing on an exceptionally wide range of source material offering new approaches to evidence drawn from writers such as Tacitus, Ambrose, Augustine, Jordanes, as well as the Indiculus Superstitionum, and Pirmin’s Scarapus, it supplements these with material drawn from liturgical texts, hagiography, homilies, ecclesiastical, and royal legislation and also from European folklore, interpreted in the light of latest theory to provide an authoritative overview of the period. edition With little or no independent historical information to draw on, ancient writers searched for biographical data in the poets' own works and in comic poetry about them. Lefkowitz describes how biographical mythology was created and offers a sympathetic account of how individual biographers reconstructed the poets' lives. She argues that the life stories of Greek poets, even though primarily fictional, still merit close consideration, as they provide modern readers with insight into ancient notions about the creative process and the purpose of poetic composition.

Practice Passages for Latin Verse Translation and Comprehension Mathew Owen Ovid Unseens provides a bank of 80 practice passages of Latin verse, half elegiac and half hexameter. Taken from across Ovid’s works, including the Metamorphoses, Fasti, Heroides, Amores and Tristia, the passages help build students' knowledge and confidence in a notoriously difficult element of Latin language learning. Every passage begins with an introduction, outlining the basic story/theme, followed by a 'lead-in' and the volume also includes a full guide to scansion and a vocabulary list. Broken down into small ‘checklists’, each corresponding to a group of four passages, the vocabulary is learnt cumulatively and as it is encountered. The Ancient Commentators on Aristotle: Now in Paperback and Library eBook General Editor: Richard Sorabji, Honorary Fellow, Wolfson College, Oxford; Emeritus Professor, King's College, London, UK This prestigious series translates the extant ancient Greek philosophical commentaries on Aristotle. Written mostly between 200 and 600AD, the works represent the classroom teaching of the Aristotelian and Neoplatonic schools in a crucial period during which pagan and Christian thought were reacting to each other. The translation in each volume is accompanied by an introduction, comprehensive commentary notes, bibliography, glossary of translated terms and a subject index. Making these key philosophical works accessible to the modern scholar, this series fills an important gap in the history of European thought. “A truly breathtaking achievement, with few parallels in the history of scholarly endeavour.” Times Literary Supplement

From April 2014 in the UK and the US, the series will be available to purchase in paperback and Library eBook format.
