Thucydides P. J. Rhodes, University of Durham, UK Thucydides's magnum opus on the history of the Peloponnesian War is core reading for any student of ancient Greek history. This concise introductory guide sets Thucydides in context as a Greek historian writing about the War; as an intellectual in the era of the 'sophists', who were willing to question a variety of traditional assumptions; and as an upper-class Athenian who lived through and was actively involved in the War as a general. In addition to examining Thucydides' work, the volume provides an overview of the social, political and intellectual contexts Thucydides was writing in, and looks at his impact in antiquity and beyond. Harry Mount's Odyssey Greek Homosexuality with Forewords by Stephen Halliwell, Mark Masterson and James Robson K. J. Dover "A landmark study. One cannot underestimate the importance of Mr. Dover's book." Erich Segal, New York Times Book Review Hailed as a magisterial study when it first appeared, Greek Homosexuality remains an academic milestone and continues to be of major importance for students and scholars of gender studies, particularly within Classics. Ancient Greece in the Footsteps of Odysseus
A ncient G reece / A ncient R ome
In Search of the Greeks (Second Edition)
Harry Mount In his new Odyssey, eminent writer Harry Mount tells the story of ancient Greece while on the trail of its greatest son, Odysseus. In the charming, anecdotal style of his bestselling Amo, Amas, Amat and All That, Harry visits Troy, still looming over the plain where Achilles dragged Hector's body through the dust, and attempts to swim the Hellespont, in emulation of Lord Byron and the doomed Greek lover, Leander. Whether in Odysseus's kingdom on Ithaca, Homer's birthplace of Chios or the Minotaur's lair on Crete, Mount brings the Odyssey - and ancient Greece - back to life. The Roman Army David J. Breeze, University of Durham, UK
Marius Federico Santangelo, Newcastle University, UK An account of the life and career of Gaius Marius, who had a major transformational impact on the politics of the late Roman Republic. Though he was consul on seven occasions, and responsible for a series of major military victories, much of his internal political agenda was highly controversial, and his reform of the army recruitment system was regarded by some (perhaps without foundation) as a crucial factor in the downfall of the Roman Republic. This volume sets Marius' achievements and failures within the wider context of the decline of the Roman Republic, but also discusses his political legacy under the Empire and his reception in later times. Pliny the Younger
Leisured Resistance
A Life in Roman Letters
Villas, Literature and Politics in the Roman World
Rex Winsbury "An attractive entrée into the mature life and career of Rome’s greatest author of literary prose epistles." New England Classical Journal This general biographical account of Pliny is the first of its kind and covers all aspects of his life in a systematic way, presupposing no prior knowledge of this key ancient author and his times. Winsbury tackles key issues including his political anxieties and issues, his relationship with women and his literary style in a roughly chronological order.
This book examines the varied ways in which cultured Roman aristocrats, of very different periods, used their country estates as a political and literary tool. Examining in-depth sources in both prose and verse from the time of Cicero to the last centuries of the Roman Empire in the west, the book demonstrates how the traditional image of the Roman aristocrat on his country estate was politically and socially very flexible.

Cicero's Ideal Statesman in Theory and Practice Jonathan Zarecki, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, USA "The last twenty years or so have seen a sustained and renewed interest in Cicero’s political thought. Zarecki’s book is an interesting, thoughtprovoking, and refreshing contribution to this trend of studies." Bryn Mawr Classical Review The resurgence of interest in Cicero's political philosophy demands a re-evaluation of his ideal statesman and its relationship not only to his political theory but also to his practical politics. Zarecki's exploration is the first comprehensive study of Cicero's ideal statesman since the 1950s, and the first ever in English. The Boundaries of Art and Social Space in Rome The Caged Bird and Other Art Forms Frederick Jones, University of Liverpool, UK Focusing on the Roman world of the late Republic, this book explores what art was and what it meant for the ancient Romans, examining the boundaries between art objects and material culture and the ways in which these forms worked on their viewers, users and society. Four case studies of cultural and aesthetic manifestations, some traditionally seen as art and some less so, are each related to their social contexts, and to broader sociological, anthropological, and cognitive fields. This study defines and explores both the internal variety and the consistencies of 'art', and the basic unity of related 'not-art' in their cultural and aesthetic content and their social functions. The Moving City Processions, Passages and Promenades in Ancient Rome Edited by Ida Ostenberg, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, Simon Malmberg, University of Bergen, Norway & Jonas Bjørnebye, independent scholar "An enjoyable read, successfully presenting a picture ‘of a bustling, lively society, where cityscape and movements are closely interactive and entwined’." Classics For All Reviews This groundbreaking collection focuses on movements in the ancient city of Rome, exploring the interaction between people and monuments. This original approach to Roman cityscape and culture reflects the shift away from the traditional study of single monuments into broader analyses of context and space, revealing both how movement adds to our understanding of the ways ancient society interacted, and how the movement of people and materials shaped urban development. Triumphs in the Age of Civil War The Late Republic and the Adaptability of Triumphal Tradition Carsten Hjort Lange, Aalborg University, Denmark This volume is the first study to consider the Roman triumph during the age of civil war, and argues that the idea of civil war as "normal" reflects the way it permeated the politics and society of the Late Roman Republic. Rethinking the nature and the character of the phenomenon during this period, the book focuses on what was a key feature of the Roman socio-political order: the triumph. Carsten Hjort Lange argues that a commander could in practice expect to triumph after a civil war victory if it could also be represented as being over a foreign enemy, even if the principal opponent was clearly Roman. Bryn Mawr Classical Review Donato investigates how the study of the Consolation can profit from the knowledge of Boethius' cultural, political, and social background that is available today. The Byzantine Dark Ages Michael J. Decker, University of South Florida, USA "A pioneering study ... that can be consulted with profit by both the student and the specialist." Benjamin Hudson, Pennsylvania State University, USA The latest volume in this series of archaeological debates looks at the sudden transformation of the Byzantine Empire in the wake of environmental, social and political changes. It has long been recognized that the mid-7th century CE ushered in sweeping variations in the way of life of many inhabitants of the Mediterranean world, with evidence of the decline of the size and economic prosperity of cities, a sharp fall in expressions of literary culture, the collapse in trade networks, and economic and political instability. Michael Decker looks at the material evidence, lays out the current academic discourse about its interpretation, and suggests new ways of thinking about this crucial era. New Approaches
This volume brings together eleven original essays exploring the wider intellectual and cultural milieux from which ancient ethnography arose, its transformation and development in antiquity, and the way in which 19th-century receptions of ethnographic traditions helped shape the modern study of the ancient world. At a time when modern ethnographies are becoming increasingly prevalent, wide-ranging, and experimental in their approach to describing cultural difference, this book encourages us to think about ancient ethnography in new and interesting ways. Cultural Transfer in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, 400-800 AD Edited by Andreas Fischer, Freie Universitat Berlin, Germany & Ian Wood, University of Leeds, UK Based on close analyses of contemporary texts, and backed by an examination of the origins of the elements transferred and of the process of transmission, the essays in this volume focus on the perception and adaptation of knowledge and cultural elements in the West. They shed light on the changing lines of communication between the Byzantine empire and other parts of the Mediterranean, on the one hand, and the Burgundian, Frankish and Anglo-Saxon realms and the Papacy on the other. The Religious Worlds of the Laity in Late Antique Gaul Lisa Kaaren Bailey, University of Auckland, New Zealand This is the first volume to explore the role of the laity in the key region of Gaul, through history, archaeology and theology. The acts and experiences of clergy and laity are compared: the former themselves constructed the category of 'the laity', and shaped lay religious experience by this need to create categories; the laity experienced and interpreted their religion differently according to gender, location, piety and social status, and their decisions shaped the nature of the Church and of their faith. Surviving Sea-level Rise after the Last Ice Age
Naomi Sykes, University of Nottingham, UK "Students will appreciate this as a source of information and ideas, academics will welcome a gust of fresh air through a dusty subject, and the general reader will enjoy a lively, often irreverent, book on a fascinating topic." Terry O'Connor, University of York, UK Zooarchaeology, the study of ancient animals, is frequently sidelined in archaeology. By integrating knowledge from archaeological remains with evidence from texts, iconography, social anthropology and cultural geography, Beastly Questions encourages students, researchers and commercial archaeologists to offer more engaging interpretations of the evidence. Shaky Ground Context, Connoisseurship and the History of Roman Art Elizabeth Marlowe, Colgate University, USA "A must-read for its critique of the use of ungrounded canonical works in textbooks, survey courses, and exhibits." Bryn Mawr Classical Review The recent crisis in the world of antiquities collecting has prompted scholars and the general public to pay more attention than ever before to the questions of archaeological findspots and collecting history for newly found objects. When it comes to famous works that have been in major museums for many generations, such issues are rarely explored. This book argues that the question of archaeological origin should be the first asked, not only by museums, but by scholars as well. Fishing and Shipwreck Heritage Marine Archaeology's Greatest Threat? Sean A. Kingsley, Wreck Watch International, UK For 250 years encrusted wonders have been turning up in fishermen’s nets: everything imaginable from prehistoric animal bones to priceless Roman statues. The profound threat of the global fishing industry remains a black hole in marine archaeology, poorly understood and unmanaged. Fishing and Shipwreck Heritage is the first global analysis of the threat of bottom fishing to underwater cultural heritage, examining the diversity, scale and implications on endangered finds and sites. This book asks these questions in relation to the hunter-gatherer inhabitants of a lost prehistoric land; a land that became entirely inundated and now lies beneath the North Sea. It seeks to understand how these people viewed and responded to their changing environment, moving beyond the static approach normally applied to environmental change in the past to capture its nuances. Through this, a richer and more complex story of past sea-level rise develops; a story that may just have resonance for us today. Archaeology and State Theory Subjects and Objects of Power Bruce Routledge, University of Liverpool, UK "A book rich in theoretical insights, supported via empirical case studies. The book represents a welcome addition to the bibliography ... It is a must-read for all readers interested in stateformation." Bryn Mawr Classical Review Over the years, archaeological research has shifted decisively from check-list identifications of the state as an evolutionary type to studies of how power and authority were constituted in specific policies. Evidential Reasoning in Archaeology Robert Chapman, University of Reading, UK & Alison Wylie, Durham University, UK How do archaeologists actually work with the forms of data they identify as a record of the cultural past? How are these data collected and construed as evidence? What is the impact on archaeological practice of new techniques of data recovery and analysis (especially those that originate in the physical and life sciences)? To answer these questions, the authors identify key examples of evidential reasoning in archaeology that are widely regarded as successful, as pivotal to the development of the field, or as instructive failures, and build nuanced analyses of the forms of reasoning they exemplify. The Unknown Tutankhamun
The Lost Obelisks of Egypt
Marianne Eaton-Krauss, independent scholar
Bob Brier, Long Island University, USA In the half-century between 1831 and 1881 three massive obelisks left Egypt, bound for Paris, London and New York. With no records of how obelisks had been moved in the past, the 19th-century engineers entrusted with transporting them across oceans had to invent new methods, and they were far from certain that they would work. The world held its breath. Bob Brier, renowned Egyptologist and author, recreates a turbulent era, caught up in obelisk mania, amid astounding tales of engineering dexterity and naval endurance. This compelling book will fascinate all those interested in Egypt, its iconic monuments and the history of great endeavour. The Egyptian Oracle Project Ancient Egyptians at Play Board Games Across Borders Walter Crist, Arizona State University, USA, Anne-Elizabeth Dunn-Vaturi, Leiden University, the Netherlands & Alex de Voogt, American Museum of Natural History, New York, USA The rich history of Egypt has provided famous examples of board games played in antiquity. Each of these games provides evidence of contact between Egypt and its neighbours, as they travelled from Egypt to the Levant and back, meeting players in Cyprus or hosting Romans and Arabs in Egypt. Recently, the extent and modes of such contact has become better understood through museum and archival research projects as well as surveys of archaeological sites in Egypt and its surrounding regions. This will be the first volume on ancient Egyptian games of its kind and a much-needed contribution to the fields of both Egyptology and board games studies. Envisioning the Past Through Memories How Memory Shaped Ancient Near Eastern Societies Edited by Davide Nadali, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy This volume of collected essays focuses on the meaning of memory, debating the construction, transformation and cancellation of memory in the past by ancient people. Ancient Ceremony in Augmented Reality Edited by Robyn Gillam, York University, Canada & Jeffrey Jacobson, PublicVR, Boston, USA For more than 2,000 years, the Egyptian processional oracle was one of the main points of contact between temple-based religion and the general population: in a public ceremony, a god would indicate its will or answer questions through the movements of a portable cult statue. The Egyptian Oracle Project reenacts the oracle using virtual reality and live performance and this book's collection of essays provides vital background to the pathbreaking project, introducing educational theatre and virtual reality, describing the ancient ceremony and its development, and exploring the virtual temple setting and the wider implications of this project for virtual heritage. From Khartoum to Jerusalem The Dragoman Solomon Negima and his Clients (1884–1933) Rachel Mairs, University of Reading, UK In 2014, Rachel Mairs made the remarkable discovery of the ‘Testimonial Book of Dragoman Solomon N. Negima’. Using the reference letters pasted inside recommending Negima's services as guide and interpreter, and the first-hand published and unpublished accounts of the travellers themselves, this volume tells the stories of nineteenth-century tourists such as the intrepid Victorian female traveller, Ellen E. Miller, and an African-American minister, Rev. Charles T. Walker, who had been born into slavery. Between the lines of others’ letters, Negima’s remarkable story also emerges, allowing us an insight into the lives of individuals whose histories would otherwise be lost to us, and a new perspective on the history of travel in the Middle East. Deep Classics
Imagining Xerxes
Rethinking Classical Reception
Ancient Perspectives on a Persian King
Edited by Shane Butler, Johns Hopkins University, USA
Emma Bridges, Open University, UK
Fragmented, buried, and largely lost, the classical past presents formidable obstacles to anyone who would seek to know it. 'Deep Classics' is the study of these obstacles and, in particular, of the way in which the contemplation of the classical past resembles – and has even provided a model for – other kinds of human endeavor. This volume offers a new way to understand the modalities and aims of Classics itself, through the ages. Its individual chapters draw fruitful connections between the reception of classical and current concerns in philosophy of mind, cognitive theory, epistemology, media studies, sense studies, aesthetics, queer theory and eco-criticism. "[A] fascinating and compendious survey of ancient attitudes to Xerxes." Tom Holland, The Spectator Imagining Xerxes is a transhistorical analysis that explores the richness and variety of Xerxes’ afterlives within the ancient literary tradition. It examines the earliest representations of the king, in Aeschylus’ tragic play Persians and Herodotus’ historiographical account of the Persian Wars, before tracing the ways in which the image of Xerxes was revisited and adapted in later Greek and Latin texts. The author also looks beyond the Hellenocentric viewpoint to consider the construction of Xerxes’ image in the Persian epigraphic record and the alternative perspectives on the king found in the Jewish written tradition. Victorian Classical Burlesques A Critical Anthology Laura Monros-Gaspar, University of Valencia, Spain The Victorian classical burlesque was a popular theatrical genre of the mid-19th century. It parodied ancient tragedies with music, melodrama, pastiche, merciless satire and gender reversal. Immensely popular, the genre was also intensely metatheatrical and carries significance for reception studies, the role and perception of women in Victorian society and the culture of artistic censorship. This anthology contains an in-depth critical introduction and the annotated text of Antigone Travestie (1845) by Edward L. Blanchard, Medea; or, the Best of Mothers with a Brute of a Husband (1856) by Robert Brough, Alcestis; the Original Strong-Minded Woman (1850) and Electra in a New Electric Light (1859) by Francis Talfourd. War as Spectacle
The Myth of the Dying God in the Italian Renaissance
Ancient and Modern Perspectives on the Display of Armed Conflict
Carlo Caruso, Durham University, UK
Edited by Anastasia Bakogianni, University College London, UK & Valerie M. Hope, Open University, UK
"An accomplished and detailed exemplar of the variety of interpretation and afterlife of classical myths ... an exhaustive and illuminating book ... invaluable to researchers." The Classical Review In this detailed treatment of the myth of Adonis in post-Classical times, Carlo Caruso provides an overview of the main texts, both literary and scholarly, in Latin and in the vernacular, which secured for the Adonis myth a unique place in the Early Modern revival of Classical mythology. While aiming to provide this general outline of the myth's fortunes in the Early Modern Age, the book also addresses many important points via original research. War as Spectacle examines the display of armed conflict in classical antiquity and its impact in the modern world. The contributors address key questions such as how and why war was conceptualized as a spectacle in our surviving ancient sources, and how this view of war has been adapted in post-classical contexts and to what purpose. Essays engage with the motif of war as spectacle through a variety of theoretical and methodological pathways and frameworks, from literature and art in antiquity to the modern day, for example in how classical models contribute to contemporary debates about modern wars, including the interrogation of propaganda and news coverage.

The Codex Fori Mussolini
The Gentle, Jealous God
A Latin Text of Italian Fascism Han Lamers, Humboldt Universität, Germany & Bettina Reitz-Joosse, Leiden University, The Netherlands
Reading Euripides' Bacchae in English Simon Perris, University of Wellington, New Zealand
This book is the first study of a Latin text written for and about Benito Mussolini and buried under a white marble obelisk set up in the Foro Italico during the Fascist era. Composed in the early 1930s yet in the language of the Roman emperors, the Codex was supposed to reach audiences in the distant future. A thorough and wide-ranging introduction, clear translation and commentary (offering help with historical background as well as specific references and questions of phrasing) render this forgotten text accessible to students and scholars – and throw light on the ideological role of the Latin language in Fascist Italy.
Euripides' Bacchae holds a special fascination as the magnum opus of the most popular ancient dramatist: it was translated very frequently in the 20th century, and it is highly susceptible to divergent reinterpretations. Focusing on the one central concern of revolutionary violence, the play is especially open to reinterpretation via analogy and allegory. Throughout the play's translation history there are the leitmotivs of sex, drugs, music, ritual and metatheatre. This survey looks at how the translation history of Bacchae is central to its wider reception history and how the play has been subjected to a myriad fashions of criticism and interpretation, all reflected in and influenced by translation.

The Presocratics and the Supernatural
The Poetics of Phantasia
Magic, Philosophy and Science in Early Greece
Anne Sheppard, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK
Andrew Gregory, University College London, UK "A thorough introduction to the debates on Presocratic naturalism." Bryn Mawr Classical Review This book examines the relationship between magic, philosophy and the investigation of nature in presocratic Greece. Did the presocratic thinkers, often praised for their rejection of the supernatural, still believe in gods and the divine and the efficacy of magical practices? Did they use animism, astrology, numerology and mysticism in their explanations of the world? This book analyses the evidence in detail and argues that we need to look at each of these beliefs in context. "This elegant, slim volume contributes to the vast literature on phantasia and imagination in Greek thought. It is a rewarding study that should be widely consulted." Australasian Journal of Philosophy With a thorough examination of ancient views of literary and artistic realism, allegory and symbolism, The Poetics of Phantasia brings together a study of the ways in which the concept of imagination (phantasia in Greek) was used in ancient aesthetics and literary theory. Olympiodorus: On Plato First Alcibiades 10–28 Edited by Michael Griffin, University of British Columbia, Canada Olympiodorus (AD c. 500–570), possibly the last non-Christian teacher of philosophy in Alexandria, delivered 28 lectures as an introduction to Plato. For us, these lectures can serve as an accessible introduction to late Neoplatonism. Olympiodorus' pupils are beginners, able to approach the hierarchy of philosophical virtues, like the aristocratic playboy Alcibiades. Alcibiades needs to know himself, at least as an individual with particular actions, before he can reach the virtues of mere civic interaction. This volume translates lectures 10–28, following from the first nine lectures and a biography of Plato published in Olympiodorus: Life of Plato and On Plato First Alcibiades 1–9 (Bloomsbury, 2014). New Findings on Seven Hundred Years of the Ancient Commentators Edited by Richard Sorabji, University of Oxford, UK
This book brings together 20 articles giving a comprehensive view of the work of the Aristotelian commentators. First published in 1990, the collection is now brought up to date with a new introduction by Richard Sorabji. New generations of scholars will benefit from this reissuing of classic essays, including seminal works by major scholars. The volume gives a comprehensive background to the work of the project on the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle, which has published over 100 volumes of translations since 1987 and has disseminated these crucial texts to scholars worldwide.
This volume presents collected essays – some brand new, some republished, and others newly translated – on the ancient commentators on Aristotle and showcases the leading research of the last three decades. Through the work and scholarship inspired by Richard Sorabji in his series of translations of the commentators started in the 1980s, these ancient texts have become a key field within ancient philosophy. Building on the strength of the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series, and acting as a sequel to the widely praised edited volume now in a revised edition, Aristotle Transformed, this new book brings together critical new scholarship that is a must-read for any scholar in the field.

Antigone is Sophocles’ masterpiece, a seminal influence on a wide range of theatrical, literary and intellectual traditions all over the world. This volume sets the play in the contexts of its ancient mythical background, its original circumstances of performance, its relation to the culture and thought of contemporary Athens, and the rich and complicated history of its reception. Cairns considers the extent of the original audience’s acquaintance with earlier versions of the legends; the structure of the plot as it unfolds; the presentation of the characters and the motivations that drive them; the play's major political, social and ethical themes; and the resonance of those themes in the play's reception.

Experiencing Hektor Character in the Iliad Lynn Kozak, McGill University, USA Hektor, the Trojan hero whose death is the central theme of Homer's great epic the Iliad, resonates with audiences as tragic hero, renowned warrior, loyal husband and father, and troubled prince of a doomed city. The development of his character has never before been studied in detail – whereas many and various works have been written about his nemesis Achilles. This book fills that gap, by documenting the serial experience of Hektor through a close reading of the Iliad. Lynn Kozak presents a rigorous philological examination of every instance where Hektor enters the poem, analysing each entrance's narrative context and style. In so doing, she challenges and destabilises previous popular and scholarly assumptions about Hektor, and about the Iliad as a whole. Heracles and Athenian Propaganda Politics, Imagery and Drama Sofia Frade, University of Lisbon, Portugal Heracles and Athenian Propaganda examines how the hero was appropriated and portrayed by Athens in religion, politics, architecture and literature, with a detailed study of Euripides' Heracles in relation to this interplay between the hero and the city's ideology, examining how this particular play fits within the space of the polis and its political ideology. By looking at the play's larger contexts – literary, civic, political, religious and ideological – new readings are offered to the most problematic elements of the play, including the question of its unity, the nature of the hero's madness and the role of the gods. Ovid
Seneca: Oedipus
A Poet on the Margins
Susanna Braund, University of British Columbia, Canada
Laurel Fulkerson, Florida State University, USA The latest volume of the Classical World series is a handy introduction to the Latin poet Ovid, who was famously exiled by the Emperor Augustus to the shores of the Black Sea for his self-confessed crimes of 'a poem and a mistake'. Laurel Fulkerson discusses his poetry's themes, particularly exile, marginality and alterity, as well as his innovation and audacious experiments with genre, metre and poetic form. The poetic analysis is presented against a backdrop of biographical information and the historical context of the newly Augustan Rome. Perfect for readers and students with little or no experience of Ovid, this will also be a welcome guide to more advanced scholars. Ovid on Cosmetics Medicamina Faciei Femineae and Related Texts Marguerite Johnson, University of Newcastle, Australia Exploring female beauty and cosmetics, the Medicamina Faciei Femineae also presents five practical recipes for cosmetic treatments used by Roman women. This is the first full study devoted to this littleresearched but multi-faceted poem, with an in-depth introduction on the poem's literary heritage and relevance to social values, personal aesthetics and attitudes to female beauty in Roman society. The Latin text is presented alongside a new translation and detailed commentary notes with references to passages in Ovid's other works. Through the centuries, Oedipus' story has inspired works of epic poetry, lyric poetry, tragedy, opera, a gospel musical and Sigmund Freud's famous phrase 'the Oedipus complex'. The best known version of the Oedipus myth from antiquity is the Greek play by Sophocles. But there is another version, the Latin drama by the Roman philosopher and politician Seneca. This book offers a compact and incisive study of the myth, of Seneca as dramatist, of the distinctive characteristics of Seneca's play and of the most important aspects of the reception of the play in European drama and culture. Seneca's Tragedies and the Aesthetics of Pantomime Alessandra Zanobi, independent scholar "Meticulous scholarship, combined with the author’s own experience as a trained dancer, have produced the most exciting and original new study of Senecan drama of the 21st century." Edith Hall, King's College London, UK This volume adds to our understanding of Seneca's tragic art by demonstrating that elements which have long puzzled scholars can be attributed to the influence of pantomime. Zanobi argues that certain formal features which depart from the conventions of 5th-century Attic drama can be explained by the influence of, and interaction with, this more popular genre. Symphosius The Aenigmata An Introduction, Text and Commentary T.J. Leary, Hampton School, UK The post-classical compilation known to modern scholarship as the Latin Anthology contains a collection of a hundred riddles, each consisting of three hexameters and preceded by a lemma. This is the first scholarly edition of The Aenigmata in English since 1928. The introduction debates the author's identity and the date of the work, examining its social context and literary debts. The commentary on each riddle includes a translation, general notes on the object it describes (with references to museums and artifacts), and discussion of how it fits into the ordering of the collection, taking into account variant readings and literary, stylistic and metrical considerations.
