Shakespeare’s House

A Window onto his Life and Legacy

Richard Schoch, Queen’s University Belfast, UK Richard Schoch explores the appeal of Shakespeare's 'Birthplace' to visitors by examining the history of the house through time and how its changing fortunes reflect the changing attitudes toward Shakespeare himself

Based on original research, this book traces the history of Shakespeare’s birthplace, beginning in the 1560s, when Shakespeare was born there, and ending in the 1890s, when the house was rescued from private purchase and turned into the Shakespeare monument that it remains today

The Arden Shakespeare

Shakespeare on Prejudice 'Scorns and Mislike' in Shakespeare's Plays

B. J. Sokol, Goldsmiths, University of London, UK

How are various forms of prejudice portrayed in the works of Shakespeare and to what extent does Shakespeare differ from his contemporaries in their portrayal? What can we learn about Shakespeare's times and our own through a close reading of prejudice depicted in his plays? Through detailed analysis of his plays, comparison with the works of other Elizabethan writers and a consideration of Shakespeare's social environment, the study provides an appreciation of how Shakespeare represents prejudice against education, the arts, peace, ‘strangers’ or outsiders, and sexual love

The Vortex

Noël Coward

The roaring twenties. A world in flux. The magnetic Florence Lancaster draws people to her like moths to a flame. But when her son Nicky arrives home from Paris with an unexpected fiancée and a secret, it sets off a chain of events which threatens to pull them all into a maelstrom Noël Coward’s brilliantly witty and stinging portrait of the darkness beneath the glittering surface of the Jazz Age is as vivid today as when it premiered, causing a sensation and catapulting its young writer to his first great success.

Listening and Talking A Pathway to Acting

Evan Yionoulis, Julliard, New York, USA

Introduction to Acting: Listening and Talking provides undergraduate acting students with a clear, achievable, step-by-step way to approach the work of playing a role The text is supplemented by exclusive video material to take the actor from their first encounter with the text through rehearsals with fellow actors and into performance

Drawing from the author's twenty years' experience of teaching at the Yale School of Drama, this book, which is influenced, too, by the work of legendary teachers such as Konstantin Stanislavski and Uta Hagen, presents a thorough examination of key aspects of the actor's technique (for example, listening, playing an action and pursuing an objective) Throughout, it includes exercises and process points through which students can put into practice the key lessons from each chapter

The practices laid out in this book form a holistic curriculum that not only ensures measurable results over a semester- or year-long course, but also sets in motion an internal process that will serve the student over their life as an artist

Dance in Musical Theatre A History of the Body in Movement

Edited

Through a selection of essays, this book conceptualizes the function of dance in musical theatre in multiple ways: how it functions diegetically as a part of the story or non-diegetically as an amplification of emotion, as well as how the dancing body works to reveal character psychology by expressing an unspoken aspect of the libretto, embodying emotions or ideas through metaphor or abstraction

Noël Coward

The Playwright’s Craft in a Changing Theatre

Russell Jackson, University of Birmingham, UK

This is the first book-length work to draw extensively on archive material to document the craft behind the sophisticated polish of some of Noël Coward's most successful work It documents his progress from the ‘boy playwright’ of 1920 to the ‘Master’ of the post-war years, reading his work and practice against the changing social and political context

As well as developing a fuller critical understanding of Coward’s work, the book reveals him as a playwright who disguised the care he devoted to his writing, and whose quest for new formal and thematic approaches, while not always successful, was invariably adventurous

Adam Alston, Goldsmiths University of London, UK

Staging Decadence offers the first scholarly consideration of decadence in theatre, focusing on an international range of practitioners who embody, enact or subvert the excesses of twenty-first century capitalism. It does so by introducing and ultimately embracing decadence as a valuable take on radical theatre in beleaguered economies What emerges is an opportunity to consider decadence as a stage upon which cultural values are forged, contested or undermined

Stage Management

Communication Design as Scenography

Michael Smalley

Drawing on interview material from more than 20 leading stage managers from the UK, USA and Australia this book situates the contemporary practice of stage management within its historical and social contexts Questioning the notions of the invisible stage manager and a linear production process, it argues for a broader conception of stage management lying at the intersections of administration, management and artistry

It places stage management practice within, and introduces its practitioners to, key theories of fields as diverse as performance studies, semiotics, phenomenology, distributed cognition, management and scenography, and demonstrates how stage managers embed these in their practice

Michael Ewans, University of Newcastle, Australia

This indispensable guide offers directors and actors an excellent starting point for mounting their production. Looking briefly first at the conditions of ancient Greek performance and the conventions of the Greek theatre, this practical guide goes on to explore, with analysed examples, the issues that today's theatre-makers need to consider in order to successfully stage ancient Greek drama. The final part of the book examines larger questions, around values, myth, the individual, the gods and fate – all of which need to be taken into consideration when approaching a contemporary production

Have you heard about BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS?

A pilot open access model for books

BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. We are the first commercial publisher to pilot such a model. Our hope is to engage a more diverse set of authors, bringing their work to a wider global audience.

THE BOOKS

In this pilot phase we aim to make 20 frontlist titles in African Studies and International Development OA immediately upon publication. The titles, including some from Bloomsbury’s renowned Zed Books imprint, are due to publish between March 2024 and February 2025.

BENEFITS TO LIBRARIES

• Contribute to a progressive OA funding model that aims to make 20 research titles available OA

• Receive 1 year’s access to 194 backlist titles in African Studies and International Development

• Be publicly acknowledged on our website

• If we do not raise enough funds to publish the titles OA, receive permanent access to all 20 frontlist titles

• If we raise 50% of our target funding and can only publish 10 titles OA, receive permanent access to the 10 titles that are not made OA
