Alcohol, Binge Sobriety and Exemplary Abstinence
Julie Robert, Griffith University, Australia
Where did Temporary Sobriety Initiatives (TSIs) such as Dry January, FebFast and Ocsober, come from? And what is their role, if any, in prompting people to revisit their relationship with alcohol? This book considers these campaigns as part of a lifestyle movement that transcends single events and even singular national contexts It uses case studies from Australia, the USA and the UK to examine both the short history of TSIs as a response to problematic localized drinking cultures—including binge drinking—and their relationship to a much longer and transnational history of temperance activism

Feeding the People in Wartime Britain
Bryce Evans, Liverpool Hope University, UK
While the history of food on the home front in wartime Britain has mostly focused on rationing, this book reveals the importance and scale of nationwide communal dining schemes during this era Welcomed by some as a symbol of a progressive future in which ‘wasteful’ home dining would disappear, and derided by others for threatening the social order, these sites of food and eating attracted great political and cultural debate Using extensive primary source material, Feeding the People in Wartime Britain examines the cuisine served in these communal restaurants and the people who used them

A Short History of the Weimar Republic
Revised Edition
Colin Storer, University of Warwick, UK
It is impossible to understand the history of modern Europe without some knowledge of the Weimar Republic The brief fourteen-year period of democracy between the Treaty of Versailles and the advent of the Third Reich was marked by unstable government, economic crisis and hyperinflation and the rise of extremist political movements. At the same time, however, a vibrant cultural scene flourished. Incorporating original research and a synthesis of the existing historiography, this revised edition will provide students and a general readership with a clear and concise introduction to the history of the first German Republic

This book examines the narratives that surrounded cases of male suicides in 19thcentury Britain, showing how interpretations of suicidal motives were guided by gendered expectations of behaviour, and that these expectations were constructed to create meaning and understanding for family, friends and witnesses Providing an insight into how people of this era understood suicidal behaviour and motives, it challenges the assertion that suicide was seen as a distinctly feminine act, and that men who took their own lives were feminized as a result

Prison and Workhouse Reform in 19th-Century England
Lewis Darwen, Roehampton University, UK & David Orr, University of Central Lancashire, UK
The first study to analyse the joint development of the prison and the workhouse in 19th-century England, focusing on the roles played by key local reformers in shaping their design, form and function Whilst the introduction of the Gaol Act in 1823 marked a shift towards more disciplined institutional regimes, the local nature of prison and workhouse development meant no two institutions operated in the same way As a result, the nature of local prison and workhouse regimes, while impacted by national developments, was chiefly the result of complex and evolving ideas held by local figures.

The Fear of Chinese Power An International History
Jeffrey Crean, Tyler Junior College, USA

From World War to Postwar Revolution, Cold War, Decolonization, and the Rise of American Hegemony, 1943-1958
Andrew N. Buchanan, University of Vermont, USA
Offering a global account of the ‘long’ World War II, this book challenges narratives of a clearly defined war period (1939-1945) followed by a postwar era dominated by the encroaching Cold War Arguing that while some aspects of the war did end abruptly in 1945, in many corners of the world ‘war’ bled directly into the ‘postwar’ such as Allied Occupation in Italy, civil war in Greece, US hegemony, and struggles for national liberation in India - showing how critical developments in the latter half of the 20th century were a direct result of the Second World War

Locating the Transatlantic in Twentieth-century Politics, Diplomacy and Culture
Edited by Gaynor Johnson, University of Kent, UK
Written in tribute to the work of Professor Alan Dobson, this collection of essays brings diplomacy and the Anglo-American relationship together, considering political interactions in tandem with cultural interactions. Uniquely placed to define exactly what transatlanticism is, and to explore the ways in which this idea has evolved in the last 150 years, this book asks to what extent can it be argued that there was a transatlantic world; how can it be defined and what was unique about it?

A Transnational and Comparative History
Ana Lucia Araujo, Howard University, USA
In this book, Ana Lucia Araujo shows that calls for reparations for slavery and the slave trade have persevered over a long and difficult history. Coffeehouse Culture in the Atlantic World, 1650-1789
E. Wesley Reynolds, Northwood University, USA
This book argues that coffeehouses and the coffee trade were central to the making of the Atlantic world in the century leading up to the American Revolution. Fostering international finance and commerce, spreading transatlantic news, building military might, determining political fortunes and promoting status and consumption, coffeehouses created a web of social networks stretching from Britain to its colonies in North America

Nazi Germany, Annexed Poland and Colonial Rule
Resettlement, Germanization and Population Policies in Comparative Perspective
Rachel O'Sullivan, Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History, Germany
This book examines Nazi Germany’s expansion, population management and establishment of a racially stratified society within the Reichsgaue (Reich Districts) of Wartheland and Danzig-West Prussia in annexed Poland (1939-1945) through a colonial lens The topic of the Holocaust has thus far dominated the scholarly debate on the relevance of colonialism for our understanding of the Nazi regime . However, as opposed to solely concentrating on violence to investigate whether the Holocaust can be located within wider colonial frameworks, Rachel O’Sullivan utilizes a broader approach by investigating other aspects, such as discourses and fantasies related to expansion, settlement, ‘civilising missions’ and Germanisation, which were also intrinsic to Nazi Germany’s rule in Poland

An Intellectual History of Liberal Catholicism in Western Europe, 1789-1870
Edited by Aude Attuel-Hallade, Sorbonne University, France
This volume probes and deciphers the tensions and contradictions that underlie modern European Liberal Catholicism Taking the French Revolution as a starting point, seen in this context as the inauguration of an unprecedented sequence of dialogues between European ‘public moralists’, the book discusses the ways in which liberal Catholics loosened their bonds with religion, all the while relying on it It prompts a vital reappraisal of the political, ideological and philosophical pressures that the religious question caused in the redefinition of Western European post-revolutionary liberalism in the 19th century

Sexuality in Premodern Europe
A Social and Cultural History from Antiquity to the Early Modern Age
Franz X. Eder, University of Vienna, Austria
How did sexual relationships work before, in and outside of marriage in the pre-modern era? What problems did contraception and sexually transmitted diseases pose? How did people deal with prostitution and pornography back then? What were the possibilities for same-sex and queer desire and practice? Using numerous examples and sources from across the continent, Sexuality in Premodern Europe shows that even in earlier centuries, sexual life had an elementary significance for the coexistence of couples and communities It was just as decisive for how individuals saw themselves and others as it was for maintaining the social, economic and political order

The Politics of Smallness in Modern Europe Size, Identity and International Relations since 1800
Edited by Samuël Kruizinga, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands
This multi-contributor volume examines the connections between the size of states and their diplomatic place in modern Europe and beyond It brings together established and up-and-coming scholars from several countries across Europe, as well as the United States, in order to analyse this intriguing area of study
Rather than simply assuming that some states are small and others are big, The Politics of Smallness in Modern Europe delves deep into the construction of different size-based hierarchies in Europe and explores the way Europeans have thought about their own state’s size and that of their continental neighbours since the early 19th century

The Four Questions
Robert Weinberg, Swarthmore College, USA Russia and the Jewish Question explores how perceptions of Jews in late Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union shaped the regimes’ policies toward them It traces the evolving and changing nature of popular and official beliefs about the purported nature of Jews from the late 18th century to the end of the 20th century Robert Weinberg’s examination of the ‘Jewish Question’ (and by extension antiSemitism) provides a fruitful way to investigate why and how social, economic, political, and cultural developments in Russia from the time of Catherine the Great led to prejudices and the discriminatory treatment of Russian and Soviet Jews

Israel and the Holocaust
Avinoam J. Patt, University of Connecticut, USA
Avinoam J Patt examines the relationship between the two most significant events in modern Jewish history Is there a causal relationship between these two events, separated by only three years? Put another way, was the creation of the state of Israel made more or less likely by the Holocaust?
Patt carefully considers this question, not just from the perspective of historical causality, but also with regard to its major political implications The book then goes on to document and analyse the changing nature of Israel’s relationship to the Shoah in the sixty years since the Eichmann trial

Imperial Gallows
Murder, Violence and the Death Penalty in British Colonial Africa, c 1915-60
Stacey Hynd, University of Exeter, UK
The death penalty was an integral aspect of colonial networks of power and violence in Britain’s African territories Imperial Gallows analyses capital trials from Kenya, Nyasaland and the Gold Coast to explore the social tensions that fuelled murder among colonised populations, and how colonial legal cultures and landscapes of political authority shaped sentencing and mercy It demonstrates how ideas of race, ethnicity, gender and ‘civilization’ could both spare and condemn Africans convicted of murder in colonial courts, and also how Africans could either appropriate or resist such colonial legal discourses in their trials and petitions

Peace, Decolonization, and the Practice of Solidarity
Rob Skinner, University of Bristol, UK
This book shows that connected histories of decolonization and globalization are found in the everyday activities of individuals as much as they are histories of states, institutions and formal organisations Viewing decolonization through non-state activist practices, and setting anti-colonial solidarity in the context of contemporary global peace movements, it argues that seemingly marginal histories can illuminate aspects of the end of empire that are not readily apparent in studies centered on state diplomacy and nationalist movements

Voices of American Women's History from Reconstruction to the Present
Contemporary Accounts of Daily Life
Kristine Ashton Gunnell, Claremont Graduate University, USA
Gender alone has never defined women's experiences in America In this volume, Kristine Ashton Gunnell shows that, as much as gender, race, class, religion, citizenship, and sexuality have historically directed the course of women's lives in the United States for more than 200 years Women from diverse backgrounds are represented in media and documents that include pamphlets, book excerpts, personal narratives, photographs, advertisements, congressional testimonies, and Supreme Court rulings Such issues as abortion, marriage equality, domestic violence, and gender parity are shown from historical and contemporary angles, as this collection of primary sources allows readers and students to easily trace how women's lives and histories have and continue to intersect With a historical context for each selection, the book also features structured activities to help teachers with class discussion and exams, including suggestions for further reading, document analysis, essay questions, and manageable research assignments

The Kaiser, Hitler and the Jewish Department Store
The Reich's Retailer
John F. Mueller, University of Cambridge, UK
Tracing a generation of Jews who found fortune and influence in Germany only to have their livelihoods taken from them by the Nazis in the 1930s, The Kaiser, Hitler and the Jewish Department Store draws on a range of archival source to reveal how - contrary to Nazi claims - Jewish-owned department stores were decent employers, popular with customers, and well integrated into society As such, this book cogently argues that their demise cannot solely be attributed to widespread antiSemitism In this book, John F Mueller elegantly challenges common assumptions about consumer culture and the Jewish question and provides fresh insight into the social history of modern Germany

Have you heard about BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS?
A pilot open access model for books
BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. We are the first commercial publisher to pilot such a model. Our hope is to engage a more diverse set of authors, bringing their work to a wider global audience.
THE BOOKS
In this pilot phase we aim to make 20 frontlist titles in African Studies and International Development OA immediately upon publication. The titles, including some from Bloomsbury’s renowned Zed Books imprint, are due to publish between March 2024 and February 2025.
BENEFITS TO LIBRARIES
• Contribute to a progressive OA funding model that aims to make 20 research titles available OA
• Receive 1 year’s access to 194 backlist titles in African Studies and International Development
• Be publicly acknowledged on our website
• If we do not raise enough funds to publish the titles OA, receive permanent access to all 20 frontlist titles
• If we raise 50% of our target funding and can only publish 10 titles OA, receive permanent access to the 10 titles that are not made OA
