Volumes I-II Edited by Robert Wood First published in the 1750s, The Ruins of Palmyra and The Ruins of Baalbek contain over 100 engravings of the classical architecture of these two ancient cities. The volumes were unique in providing systematic discussion of the sites' physical and human geography alongside two kinds of pictorial evidence: views of the ancient sites and detailed plans, with measurements, of architectural features. The volumes had great influence upon Neoclassical architecture in Britain, Europe and North America.

The Arden Encyclopedia of Shakespeare's Language

Edited by Jonathan Culpeper, Lancaster University, UK, Andrew Hardie, Lancaster University, UK and Jane Demmen, Linguist These 2 volumes bring scholarship on Shakespeare's language into the 21st-century. They offer the first comprehensive account of Shakespeare’s language to use computational methods derived from corpus linguistics. Taking a dictionary format, Volume 1 covers A-M, Volume 2 N-Z. Each focuses on the use and meanings of Shakespeare's most-commonly used words, both in the context of what he wrote and in the context in which he wrote. Internal comparisons reveal how Shakespeare's language varies dynamically across his works, while external comparisons - including with a 380-million word corpus of wider English genres show the stylistic flavour of words. FILM & MEDIA STUDIES

Animation Critical and Primary Sources Edited by Chris Pallant, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK This is a major multi-volume work of reference that brings together seminal writings on animation studies. Gathering historical and contemporary texts from a wide-ranging number of sources, the volumes provide a key resource in understanding and studying the past and future directions of animation studies. The 4 volumes thematically trace animation studies from its many definitions, or a lack thereof, to the institutional nature of animation production, to establishing greater space within animation discourse for the consideration of broadcast and interactive animation, and finally, giving greater contextual understanding of the field of animation studies. South Korean Film Critical and Primary Sources Edited by Hyon Joo Yoo, The University of Vermont, USA An essential 3-volume reference collection representing three distinct phases in the development of South Korean national cinema. Volume I covers the “Golden Age”, referring to the cinematic era that covers the postKorean War period from 1955 to 1972. Volume II comprises the phase that produced what critics sum up as New Korean Cinema produced since the 1990s, and which has led to the commercial and critical success of recent South Korean cinema. Volume III, while continuing the thematic and stylistic development distinct in New Korean Cinema, calls for a new epochal conceptualization that emphasizes South Korean film’s global location. Adaptations Critical and Primary Sources Edited by Deborah Cartmell and Imelda Whelehan, both De Montfort University, UK This reference resource brings together over 80 landmark texts in adaptation studies. Volume One covers the history of adaptation studies, by plotting the ‘prehistory’ of the field, beginning with Vachel Lindsay’s classic Art of the Moving Picture (1915), to some of the most important critical and theoretical interventions up until the 1990s. Volume Two collects essays from the last 25 years, charting the process of critical and theoretical maturation. Volume Three covers key case studies, such as Christine Geraghty’s take on adapting Westerns and Ian Inglis’ understanding of the transformation of music into movies. HISTORY

Europe’s Welfare Traditions Since 1500 Reform Without End Thomas McStay Adams This two-volume study traces the interwoven traditions of modern welfare states in Europe over five centuries, from Portugal, France, and Italy to Britain, Belgium, and Germany. It shows that the provision of assistance to those in need has faced recognizably similar challenges from the 16th century through to the present: how to allocate aid equitably (and how to allow for social status); how to give support without undermining autonomy (the work activation dilemma); and how to balance private and public spheres of action and responsibility. A Cultural History of Beauty Volumes 1-6 Edited by Paul R. Deslandes, University of Vermont, USA How have shifting ideas about beauty related to the construction of social class, race, gender and other markers of difference? How have individuals sought to "improve" their bodies in order to enhance their status and attractiveness? In a work that spans 2,500 years, these questions are addressed by 55 experts. Aided by a wide range of case material, they illustrate the practices and cultures of male and female beauty from antiquity to the present day. Themes (and chapter titles) are: Ideas of Beauty; Art and Beauty; Beauty, Ugliness and Ideas of Difference; Nakedness and Beauty; Grooming and Hygiene; Making the Body Beautiful; Material Culture, Clothing and Consumer Practices; and Desire, Sexuality and Beauty.
