Have you heard about BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS?

A pilot open access model for books

BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. We are the first commercial publisher to pilot such a model. Our hope is to engage a more diverse set of authors, bringing their work to a wider global audience.

THE BOOKS

In this pilot phase we aim to make 20 frontlist titles in African Studies and International Development OA immediately upon publication. The titles, including some from Bloomsbury’s renowned Zed Books imprint, are due to publish between March 2024 and February 2025.

BENEFITS TO LIBRARIES

• Contribute to a progressive OA funding model that aims to make 20 research titles available OA

• Receive 1 year’s access to 194 backlist titles in African Studies and International Development

• Be publicly acknowledged on our website

• If we do not raise enough funds to publish the titles OA, receive permanent access to all 20 frontlist titles

• If we raise 50% of our target funding and can only publish 10 titles OA, receive permanent access to the 10 titles that are not made OA

Greece and the Cold War

Diplomacy and Anti-Colonialism in the Aftermath of Civil Conflict

Alexander Kazamias, Coventry University, UK

After the proclamation of the Truman Doctrine in 1947, the US became deeply involved in Greek affairs By 1952, however, the pro-Western Papagos government began to support Greek nationalism in Cyprus, demanding an end to British colonial rule Opposition to these calls by the US, Britain and Turkey caused the first crisis within NATO since its creation The book analyses these events from the novel perspective of critical international theory and exposes the unexplored connections between dependence and nationalism in Greek foreign policy

Ethnic Federalism in Cyprus

Territory, Power, and Security

Pavlos I. Koktsidis, University of Cyprus

Explores the differing approaches of Greek and Turkish Cypriots to the UN designated peace plan within negotiations for the settlement of the Cyprus Question, and how these are being driven by underlying security considerations

Using survey data and leadership assessments, Koktsidis identifies contrasting views on institutional provisions, and links them to each community’s security perceptions This new primary data reveals the impact of security perceptions on leadership-behaviour patterns - especially the prevalence of fear, uncertainty, and mistrust Additional attention is paid to the impact of psychological trauma and the lack of cognitive accuracy in decisionmaking processes

The Presumption Race and Injustice in the United States

D. Marvin Jones, University of Miami, USA

This powerful book on racism in the United States argues that a threatening narrative originating in slavery continues to link Black people to inferiority, dangerousness, and crime, causing them to be presumed guilty by society and U S legal systems In chapters on slavery, urban spaces, the drug war, media portrayals, and white spaces, he shows how the presumption of guilt continues to shape the treatment of Black people in the United States Arguing that this presumption is not simply a matter of hate on the part of individuals, but instead a social process linked to a widely shared racial ideology, The Presumption points out the continuation of racial caste in the U S as a crisis for democracy and provides a blueprint for a kind of second Reconstruction

Australian Foreign Policy Relationships, Issues, and Strategic Culture

Michael O'Keefe, La Trobe University, AUS How does Australia's unique geographical, cultural and historical position influence its approach to foreign policy? What key challenges does Australia face on the world stage, and how can it overcome them? Reflecting the messy reality of foreign policy decision-making, this book helps you to understand the changes and continuities in Australia's approach For example, does the US withdrawal from Vietnam in 1973 and collapse of South Vietnam continue to cast a shadow over Australian foreign policy, or is it relevant only in understanding the dynamics of the cold war? Using an Australian Strategic Culture framework, O'Keefe sheds light on the characteristics that make Australia behave in a way different to any other country Equipping you with analytic skills to understand the main debates, this book is essential reading if you are a student of Australian foreign policy, as well as of broader Australian domestic and international politics

I Am Somebody Why Jesse Jackson Matters

David Masciotra, Independent Scholar, USA

There are few figures and leaders of recent American history of greater social and political consequence than Jesse Jackson, and few more relevant for America’s current political climate Exploring Jesse Jackson's legacy, I am Somebody is based on over one hundred interviews with the man himself, as well as interviews with a wide variety of elected officials and activists who Jackson has inspired and influenced. As Democratic politics sees a return to radicalism and the rise of a new generation committed to racial and economic justice, this book is critical for understanding where America has come from and where it is going

Peacekeeping with no Peace to Keep

The Challenges of the UN Mission in Mali

Abdoulaye Bathily, King's College London, UK & Leonide Awah, CODESRIA

In Peacekeeping with No Peace to Keep, Abdoulaye Bathily – who served as Deputy Special Representative for the Secretary General (SRSG) for the UN mission in Mali – provides unique insights into the relevance of effective leadership for building peace

Bathily, with no previous UN experience, accepted the position of SRSG for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), asked to keep the peace in a situation where, as he argues in this book 'there was no peace to keep'

Drawing on these experiences – as well as those gained from his later role as Special Representative to the Secretary General for the mission in Central Africa – Bathily analyses the problems he faced and sets out the lessons he learned in terms of what effective leadership looks like in peacekeeping situations In particular, Bathily shares insights on how to build and sustain relations with host governments, as well as how to engage the plethora of actors typically present in peacekeeping situations across Africa

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps

Defining Iran's Military Doctrine

Alma Keshavarz, Carnegie Mellon University, USA

This unique study applies the theory of Hybrid Warfare to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), outlining Iran’s hybrid war and irregular capabilities The IRGC’s nurturing of proxy Shia groups have largely been ignored by policymakers for nearly two decades, and the West has only recently begun to pay attention as their attacks have became more blatant Keshavarz details the hybrid capabilities of the IRGC and, crucially, shows how the US and the West can adapt to better combat this challenge

Populism in the Conservative and Libertarian Working Class

Micah J. Fleck, The Trans Muse Planet, USA

Privileged Populists sets out to understand the organic emergence of anti-political populism within the context of late-stage capitalism in the West This book analyses how these elements inform and validate each other as means of appealing to the growing sense of cultural angst and economic unrest within the conservative working class—and unwittingly giving undue credence to some of the most extreme right-wing ideological claims in the process
