Have you heard about BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS?

A pilot open access model for books

BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. We are the first commercial publisher to pilot such a model. Our hope is to engage a more diverse set of authors, bringing their work to a wider global audience.

THE BOOKS

In this pilot phase we aim to make 20 frontlist titles in African Studies and International Development OA immediately upon publication. The titles, including some from Bloomsbury’s renowned Zed Books imprint, are due to publish between March 2024 and February 2025.

BENEFITS TO LIBRARIES

• Contribute to a progressive OA funding model that aims to make 20 research titles available OA

• Receive 1 year’s access to 194 backlist titles in African Studies and International Development

• Be publicly acknowledged on our website

• If we do not raise enough funds to publish the titles OA, receive permanent access to all 20 frontlist titles

• If we raise 50% of our target funding and can only publish 10 titles OA, receive permanent access to the 10 titles that are not made OA

Science and Scripture in Conversation

Andrew Ter Ern Loke, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong

Proposes a model which argues that all humans today have Adam as common ancestor, and through this model, Andrew Ter Ern Loke argues that the theory of evolution as understood by mainstream scientists is compatible with Scripture. Whilst affirming that the Bible should be interpreted according to proper hermeneutical principles such as considering the literary genre, literary context, meaning of words, grammatical relationship, and the background and concerns of the ancient authors, this book also assesses the scientific data according to proper mainstream scientific methodology.

The Ethiopian Eunuch and Conceptuality in the Imperial Imagination of Biblical Studies

Gifford Rhamie

Gifford Rhamie addresses the contentious question, “why cannot the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:26-40 be conceptualised as a Jew in the British academy?” Rhamie uses postcolonial studies and theory to examine the Ethiopian eunuch’s ethnoreligious agency, finding two epistemological lenses: whiteness and ‘critical conviviality’ The former is employed in the function of deconstructing, while the latter encourages opening one’s conceptuality in a multidimensional way, functioning to reconstruct analyses for agency

The Formal Education of the Author of Luke-Acts

Steve Reece argues that the author of Luke-Acts was aware of many literary works that formed a part of basic Hellenistic literate education, and makes his case by proving that many Greek authors were well known (from papyrological and citational data) at the likely time of Luke’s composition By focusing solely upon LukeActs, Reece is able to explore the evident Hellenistic education of the author, including the content of the curriculum, and the papyrological evidence of school exercises, his potential familiarity with Greek authors, and the influence of each of these major authors upon his work

A Case Frame Grammar and Lexicon for the Book of Revelation

Paul L. Danove, Villanova University, USA

Paul Danove presents a case-frame grammar and lexicon for the Book of Revelation, with three major goals. He first provides a step-by-step introduction to Case Frame analysis, incorporating various adaptations and extensions to address the needs of the study of the Greek of the New Testament He then supplies a comprehensive Case Frame grammar and description of the syntactic, semantic, and lexical requirements that each predicator imposes on its complements Finally, Danove generates a Case Frame lexicon that guides the interpretation and translation of each predicator occurrence in its grammatical contexts

Hermeneutics, Linguistics, and the Bible

The Importance of Context

Stanley E. Porter, McMaster Divinity College, Canada

The volume presents Stanley E Porter's considered thoughts and reflections on key questions of meaning and context, addressing the problems of biblical interpretation and how a close collaboration between hermeneutics and linguistics can help to solve them Porter focuses on context for understanding the meanings of biblical texts, suggesting that linguists can learn more from the philosophical questions around meaning that hermeneuts apply in their study of biblical texts, and that there is more fruitful work to be done in the field of hermeneutics using insights from linguistics

Commentary on the Levi, Qahat, and Amram Qumran Aramaic Traditions

Andrew B. Perrin, Athabasca University, Canada

In this study of the Aramaic materials at Qumran, Andrew B Perrin examines the Aramaic Levi Document, Words of Qahat, and Visions of Amram, showing how they exhibit a concentration of priestly concerns and knowledge and exploring new models for evaluating their potential textual or traditional connections Perrin includes a comprehensive commentary on the conceptual elements, codicological features, and cultural contexts of the materials He concludes with fresh analysis of the textual composition of these priestly pseudepigrapha, suggesting they are a “constellation” of texts developed within a larger world of scribal-priestly activity and traditions

Patristic Perspectives on Luke’s Transfiguration

Interpreting Vision

Peter Anthony, All Saints’, UK

Peter Anthony explores how visionary elements in Luke’s version of the Transfiguration had a particular influence on the early interpretation of the event, compared with contemporary interpretation He thus reveals the rich hermeneutical traditions that emerged particularly in the Latin West, as the Transfiguration was first depicted visually in art.
