Sybille Hein was born in Wolfenbüttel in 1970 and is one of Germany’s busiest children’s book artists. For years, she also demonstrated her many talents as half of the cabaret duo ‘Sybille and the Small Screwball’. She recently began designing children’s clothes and runs a boutique in Berlin, where she lives with her family.

Charlotte Habersack started writing stories at the age of seven. She went on to study German literature and work as a movie editor for television. She now writes screenplays and novels for children, when she’s not touring far-flung countries on her motorbike. She lives in Munich with her husband, two children and three chickens. Ingrid Sissung, born in Nancy, France, in 1983, studied German literature, graphic design and illustration. She has been a freelance illustrator, translator and producer since 2008. She lives in the countryside near Paris with her husband, a cat and a dog.

A little piece of happiness What is happiness? Linda Wolfsgruber looked into this question in several workshops with children, getting very different answers. Linda Wolfsgruber, born in Bruneck/South Tyrol in 1961, has been a freelance illustrator, typesetter and graphic designer since 1986. Her books for children and adults have been translated into 17 languages to date. She has been awarded the Austrian Children’s and Young Adults’ Book Prize several times, and in 2010 the Catholic Children’s and Young Adults’ Book Prize along with Heinz Janisch for Wie war das am Anfang (Dom-Verlag).

Heinz Janisch, born in 1960 in Güssing, Austria, is a journalist and author and works for the Austrian Broadcasting Service. His first children’s book came out in 1989, since then a lot of his books have won awards, among others the Bologna Ragazzi Award and the Austrian State Award for Children’s Poetry. He lives in Vienna and the Burgenland. Ute Krause was born in Berlin in 1960 and spent her childhood in India und Africa. She studied at the Academy of Arts in Berlin as well as Film and Media in Munich. Since then she illustrated more than 200 children’s books for which she was rewarded numerous times. She and her family live in Berlin.

Astrid Lindgren – everyone knows her books, and she means a great deal to children all over the world. Katrin Hahnemann describes the life of a woman who enchanted readers with her books, but was also a fighter and a role model for many. She certainly didn’t have a picture-book life. It started with an idyllic childhood like in her Bullerbu books, but then Astrid Lindgren had to get by as a single mother. She married but carried on working – and she began to write. Her books went on to alter the image of childhood in the twentieth century. She helped children to be treated with respect. She invented cheeky and non-conformist characters, who are brave and strong but also weak and scared, who fight great battles and win – without the help of adults.

A life for animals – Jane Goodall When Jane Goodall went into the jungle in 1960 to study and observe chimpanzees for an extensive period of time, she was the first person in the world to do so. Scientists hardly new anything about our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, they did not know how they lived, what they ate and how they behaved. What Jane found out after years of studying chimpanzees contributed immensely to our current knowledge of the differences between humans and animals. Today Jane fights for animal rights: With her organization “Roots and Shoots” she motivates children and young adults to become involved in environment issues in more than 120 countries worldwide.
Katrin Hahnemann studied Literature, Theatre Studies and Journalism. She has worked in the theatre and for the radio programme ‘Ohrenbär’. The Who is…? series includes her biographies of Mahatma Gandhi, Charles Darwin, Martin Luther King, Jane Goodall and Astrid Lindgren. She lives in Berlin. Uwe Mayer is an illustrator living in England and Germany. All the illustrations in the Who is…? series are his work. He has also illustrated numerous children’s books for prominent British publishers.
