What is courage? Rita’s swimming cap is certainly eyecatching. It’s bright red and shiny. Everyone instantly notices her in the swimming pool. Including the little boy watching her from the side of the pool. Rita stands on the three-metre diving board for a long time. Then she climbs back down the ladder. She does the same on the one-metre diving board. When the other children turn their heads to her she jumps elegantly from the side of the pool. A book that shows that it’s not always important to prove your courage through the most difficult challenges. Sometimes it’s much braver to let people see your weaknesses …

How to tame the wolves Mathilda’s mother has warned her to take care of the hungry wolves, but she knows how to look after herself. Soon after her mother leaves the house, she sets a huge pot of tasty lentil soup on the hob, and when the wolves appear at her door howling “huuuungry!”, Mathilda replies with: “soup”. The wolves stuff themselves and, well-fed, they are much too sleepy to gobble up the chickens, goats, or even little Mathilda herself. Nevertheless, when she kicks them out again into the winter night, the smallest of the wolves hides under Mathilda’s bed ... A magical fairytale of a shrewd girl who learns how to tame the wolves.

Nobody knows that better than the old fox now that he’s getting on a bit. He generously passes on his wisdom and many a survival tip to the young foxes – how to get away from hunting hounds with the aid of a straw or how to set a trap for goats. But one day the fox begins to forget some of the things he needs to survive. The sly redhead can’t find his way around any more in the world that was once his. But that doesn’t matter; now the young foxes are there for him – thank goodness he taught them all he knew …

GERMAN YOUNG ADULT’S LITERATURE AWARD 2011

»Baltscheit presents the subject of dementia vividly, with even as much sensitivity as a great deal of humor. The perfectly-conceived design convinces as well as the story in its density, intensity and its reconciliatory ending.« Jury of the German Adult´s Literature Award 2011

The materials we use to forge our world Hard and soft, gleaming silver or blazing hot – the world of metals is full of secrets, it is varied and contradictory. Metals conduct electricity, have magnetic properties and can even be radioactive. Of the 92 chemical elements found in nature, 67 of them are metals. In the early history of the human race, man began using metal to make all of the tools that would bring him power. And even today, demand for exclusive natural resources such as ‘rare earths’ is growing. Without these, we would have no microelectronics. Following the first volume on wood, this book goes underground into old mines, it takes a look at the casting of a bell and marvels at jewellery and sculptures, it ducks down under cannon fire, welds a joint, observes the international market for raw materials and is worth its weight in gold on the financial market.

Astrid Lindgren – everyone knows her books, and she means a great deal to children all over the world. Katrin Hahnemann describes the life of a woman who enchanted readers with her books, but was also a fighter and a role model for many. She certainly didn’t have a picture-book life. It started with an idyllic childhood like in her Bullerbu books, but then Astrid Lindgren had to get by as a single mother. She married but carried on working – and she began to write. Her books went on to alter the image of childhood in the twentieth century. She helped children to be treated with respect. She invented cheeky and non-conformist characters, who are brave and strong but also weak and scared, who fight great battles and win – without the help of adults. UPCOMING: Who Is ... From mathematical bees to democratic gazelles

The Animal in You An expedition to find our connection to the animals Illustrated by Antje von Stemm 224 pages. 135 x 215 mm Hardcover Out in April 2012 Age 10 +

Scientists have discovered that some animals are capable of performing a wide range of skills which we have long believed only humans were able to do. Who would have thought that bees can count? And although crabs aren’t exactly thought of as high achievers, they are still capable of forging political alliances. Elephants recognise themselves in the mirror, gazelles live according to democratic rules, and whales speak complicated languages in dialects as different as German and Chinese. So, we’re not quite as unique as we think. The Animal in You explains everything you could want to know about the amazing behaviour of animals – and how close they are to us because of this.

Roland Knauer and Kerstin Viering work as scientific journalists for a number of big daily newspapers (such as the German papers FAZ and Berliner Zeitung) and radio stations. Working as a team, the two authors have thus far published more than ten non-fiction books, not to mention numerous contributions to encyclopaedias, research institutes and nature conservation groups. Richard Wagner superstar?

Iris Winkler Richard Wagner and the Magic of the Music 176 pages.123 x 204 mm Numerous photos and Illustrations Out in September 2012 Age 12 +

He was a reckless megalomaniac, yet his contemporaries lauded him as a superstar and, what’s more, he continues to be regarded as one of the greatest German musical geniuses today. Why did some people find Richard Wagner so exciting whilst others so vigorously opposed him? What is it that has allowed him to maintain his fascination to this day? In the beginning, he was a revolutionary; later, a friend of the king. Wagner persistently transcended boundaries – both in his life, and in his art. With his operas, he was not only able to establish dynamic fantasy worlds, but also deliberately break existing rules in the field of music and create sounds which, at the time, were highly unusual and unashamedly provocative.

This book invites the reader to discover more about one of the most brilliant and contradictory artists in the history of music. Iris Winkler, born in 1969, studied literature and music education. She has worked as an assistant director for theaters and operas. Since 2003 she works as music theater educator, amongst others for the Berlin State Opera. Wagner’s 200th birthday on 22 May 2013. In cooperation with the Berlin State Opera; preface by Daniel Barenboim
