ASK A PHARMACIST

CH LESTEROL by Casey Shannon, Blooms The Chemist Pharmacist

THE FACTS 6.1%

30% 30% of deaths in Australia in 2017 were from heart disease. One of the key contributing factors to heart disease is high cholesterol.1

Cholesterol is an essential substance that your body produces, yet people can also consume cholesterol in some foods.

In 2017, 6.1% of all Australians had high cholesterol.

The prevalence of high cholesterol increases with age, with a sharp increase from age 45.2

WHAT IS CHOLESTEROL? Cholesterol is an essential type of fat that is carried in the blood and is a component of all cell membranes. It helps the body to build new cells, produce hormones and insulate nerves. The liver produces the majority of the cholesterol your body needs, however other sources of cholesterol come from foods such as meat, eggs, milk and sardines. It is very important to have cholesterol in the body as it is a precursor to fat-soluble vitamins and steroid hormones such as testosterone, oestrogen, progesterone and cortisol.3 However, too much cholesterol can damage arteries and increase your risk of heart disease. Cholesterol travels through the blood on proteins called ‘lipoproteins’. The two types of lipoproteins that carry cholesterol through the body are: 1. LDL – LOW DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN This is the ‘bad’ cholesterol and makes up most of your body’s cholesterol levels. LDL is the main source of artery-clogging plaque. High levels of LDL cholesterol raise your risk for heart disease and stroke.4 2. HDL – HIGH DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN This is the ‘good’ cholesterol and carries about 30% of blood cholesterol. It is the smallest and densest of the circulating lipoproteins. HDL is considered ‘good’ because it absorbs cholesterol and carries it back to the liver, which then flushes it from the body. High levels of HDL cholesterol can lower your risk of heart disease and stroke.5 4

NORMAL ARTERY

ARTERY NARROWED

Figure 1: HDL cholesterol helps your arteries to function normally while LDL can cause your arteries to narrow.

Triglycerides are another fat found in the bloodstream which provide a major source of energy and account for about 95% of all dietary fats.6 High levels of triglycerides can lower levels of HDL and increase heart disease risk. Dietary changes can help to lower triglycerides.

THE EFFECT OF HIGH CHOLESTEROL Too much cholesterol in the blood may cause a buildup of ‘plaque’ on the walls of blood vessels. This process is called 'atherosclerosis', a form of heart disease.7 The buildup of plaque causes the arteries to become narrowed which can affect blood flow to the heart. Since blood carries oxygen to the heart, if the arteries are blocked and not enough oxygen reaches the heart then chest pain (angina) can occur.8 A heart attack could occur if the blockage in the artery stops the blood flow to the heart completely.

RISK FACTORS FOR HIGH CHOLESTEROL

UNCONTROLLABLE RISK FACTORS

CONTROLLABLE RISK FACTORS

• Family history.

• Physical activity/exercise – increased physical activity can lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol.

• Gender – females cholesterol levels may increase after menopause. • Age – men aged 45 years or older and women aged 55 years or older have a higher risk of developing high cholesterol levels.

• Diet – avoid eating trans fats, saturated fats, sugar and baked goods. • Weight – being overweight can increase LDL and reduce HDL.

TARGET CHOLESTEROL LEVELS There are many factors that can influence an individual’s cholesterol targets. It’s important to speak to your healthcare professional to understand your results and guide you on strategies to lower your risk of high cholesterol which will reduce your risk of heart disease.9 If you have elevated total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, the first line approach is working towards a healthy lifestyle. This includes a tailored approach to healthy eating, physical activity and avoiding smoking.10 Your local Blooms The Chemist Pharmacist can also screen for total cholesterol, so ask in-store today. It only takes three minutes and requires a single finger-prick test.

FIXED AND GROWTH MINDSETS DO YOU BELIEVE THAT TALENT IS INNATE AND CAN’T BE CHANGED OR THAT TALENT CAN BE CULTIVATED AND IMPROVED UPON? With the New Year upon us we’re hard at work setting our resolutions and what better time to make sure your mindset is in check, your goals are on track and your vision is 2020 (see what we did there?!). A popular concept amongst psychologists, fixed and growth mindsets relate to our beliefs and our perceived limitations or lack thereof. Carol Dweck, a professor of Psychology at Stanford University, is the brain behind the concept of fixed and growth mindsets. Her research has been used throughout schools, businesses and sports organisations, winning nine different lifetime achievement awards. A fixed mindset assumes that our abilities are static and cannot be changed. Those with a fixed mindset see failure as final, something to be ashamed of and embarrassed by. A growth mindset is the belief that we can always improve and develop our skills and interests through continued effort. Grit and determination are qualities that can be cultivated, along with an attitude that embraces failure as an opportunity to learn and grow. “In one world, effort is a bad thing. It, like failure, means you’re not smart or talented. If you were, you wouldn’t need effort. In the other world, effort is what makes you smart or talented.” –Carol Dweck

HOW TO DEVELOP A GROWTH MINDSET Concentrate on the process instead of the end result. By genuinely enjoying the learning process you’re more inclined to push through any challenges that you may face. If your efforts exceed the timeframe you set to achieve your goal, you can view the experience as part of the process and focus less on an arbitrary deadline. Constantly seeking approval from others can be detrimental to your overall growth. By relying on how others see you, you can become risk-averse as you try to avoid disappointment or disapproval. The fear of embarrassment, shame and judgement from others can stop you from taking chances or stumbling through new activities. To stop seeking approval from others, you need to create a strong foundation of self-belief. Create a list of all the things you’ve achieved on your own to reaffirm to yourself just how capable you are.

6

Using the word “yet” is a powerful tool as it expresses the point of potential. There is a difference between, “I can’t play the guitar” and “I can’t play the guitar yet.” It sets the tone that you are capable of learning new things and expanding your knowledge.

Get your Health in Check WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE? MAKE YOUR HEALTH A PRIORITY THIS YEAR AND COME INTO YOUR LOCAL BLOOMS THE CHEMIST STORE FOR ONE OF OUR SIX HEALTH CHECKS. BLOOMS THE CHEMIST PHARMACISTS ARE DEDICATED TO WORKING WITH YOU AND OTHER HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS TO MANAGE YOUR HEALTH AND WELLBEING.

BLOOD PRESSURE EVALUATION

CHOLESTEROL SCREENING

High blood pressure increases the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Approximately six million Australians aged 18 years and over have high blood pressure, with close to four million Australians living with uncontrolled or unmanaged high blood pressure.1 Our free Blood Pressure Evaluations are quick, easy, and painless. We’ll fit an adjustable cuff around your upper arm (roughly at heart level) and measure your blood pressure. Your Pharmacist will then discuss your results and provide further advice and referral if necessary.

Abnormal or high total cholesterol is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke. One in three Australians aged 18 years and over have abnormal or high total cholesterol levels. Almost 90% of those with total high cholesterol are either unaware of their levels or do not consider it to be a health problem.2 If you have abnormally high cholesterol levels, you may not experience any symptoms. Usually performed as a fasting test, a small amount of blood will be taken from your fingertip; a Blooms The Chemist Cholesterol Screening takes just a few minutes.

DIABETES MONITORING IRON TESTING (BLOOD GLUCOSE SCREENING) Approximately 5% of the Approximately 1.7 million Australians have diabetes, with up to 500,000 people with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes.3 Diabetes can cause complications to the vascular system, heart, brain, eyes, kidneys, feet and wound healing. Blood Glucose Screening can assist those recently diagnosed with diabetes, or those with higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A Blooms The Chemist Blood Glucose Screening test is free and takes just minutes. Your Pharmacist will test a small amount of blood taken from your fingertip and discuss your results, providing advice and strategies to manage your blood sugar levels.

population over 18 years old are at risk of anaemia (low iron), with women more likely to be at risk than men. Amongst all Australians, people over the age of 75 years are most likely to be at risk of anaemia.4 Most of the body’s iron is found in haemoglobin. When iron intake is chronically low, haemoglobin levels decrease. Anaemia is a condition in which the number of healthy red blood cells or the availability of haemoglobin (a protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body) falls below the body’s physiologic needs. Without sufficient iron levels you may experience symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness and headaches. Our Iron Testing Health Check is a quick finger-prick screening service that gives an indication of your iron levels and risk of anaemia.

SLEEP APNOEA TESTING

STROKE RISK ASSESSMENT

One in 10 Australians suffer from undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). In men aged 40–69 years, this could be as high as 49%, and in men aged >70 years, as high as 62%!5 People with OSA are seven times more likely to be at a higher risk of death and heart disease, regardless of disease severity, age or history of heart problems. OSA is a known cause of sudden death at night-time and patients with OSA are up to nine times more likely to be involved in a motor vehicle accident. If you snore, have trouble sleeping, or find yourself tired throughout the day, chat to your local Blooms The Chemist about an at-home overnight sleep study.*

Every 10 minutes an Australian will have a stroke. Every decade, after 55 years of age, the risk of having a stroke doubles.6 Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability, killing more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer.7 A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted either by a blockage in an artery or a bleed in the brain. Our Stroke Risk Assessment service involves a free Blood Pressure Evaluation as well as a short list of questions about your age, gender, lifestyle and family history to assess your risk of developing a stroke over the next five years.

Take Care of Your Skin in Summer YOUR SKIN IS MORE VULNERABLE IN THE SUMMER MONTHS DUE TO HIGHER UV LEVELS AND INCREASED EXPOSURE SO TAKE THE TIME TO REFRESH YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF APPROPRIATE SUNCARE.

- Make sure you are using five methods of sun protection: protective clothing, sunglasses, a broad-brim hat, shade and sunscreen. - You should be applying sunscreen to dry, clean skin, 20 minutes before heading outside. - Avoid prolonged sun exposure and never rely on sunscreen alone. - For adults, apply at least one teaspoon (5mL) of sunscreen to each arm, leg, front of the body, back of the body and face (including the neck and ears). One full body application should be the equivalent of seven teaspoons (35mL). - Reapply your sunscreen regularly: every two hours and immediately after swimming, sweating or towel drying. Cancer Council’s Moisturising Sunscreen SPF50+ protects against harmful UV rays while also helping to moisturise the skin. It can aid in the prevention of premature skin ageing and sunspots. Ultra SPF50+ Sunscreen can be used as a daily sunscreen for all ages and is suitable for all skin types. Face Day Wear Moisturiser Matte SPF50+ Invisible (4hrs Water Resistant) is lightweight, hydrating and has a high UV protection to help prevent the visible signs of ageing. An easy-to-apply, and non-greasy formula, Face Day Wear is also suitable for sensitive skin. ALWAYS READ THE LABEL. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR USE. CHPAUS 30659-0919

PHARMACIST Alyce Heffernan FOCUS

Blooms The Chemist Albury and Albury Westend

How long have you been a Pharmacist with the Blooms The Chemist network? Eight and a half years ago I joined Blooms The Chemist Coogee as an intern pharmacist. I became a partner at Blooms The Chemist Coogee in 2014 then 12 months ago I relocated to Albury NSW to become a partner of the Blooms The Chemist Albury and Albury Westend stores. What made you want to become a Pharmacist? I always had an interest in science and math subjects at school and enjoyed problem solving. I love helping people and the idea of working with people was really appealing. Pharmacy is a great way for me to combine these passions and have a positive impact on the lives of others. What is the most important thing you’ve learnt as a Pharmacist? Taking the time to listen and understand your patients’ needs is so important and can make more of a difference than we often realise. And empathy goes a long way in interacting with people in this role. How do you like to relax or spend your free time? I love going out for breakfast and seeking out good coffee! I’m also keen on spending time at the local parks with my family, exercising and travelling. What’s the best thing about your community? Even though I have only been in Albury for a short period of time, I have felt so welcomed by the community and had so much support since moving here. What are your favourite places to visit in your local community? Although I've been a resident of Albury for only a year, it hasn’t taken long for me to find my favourite spots! I love spending time at Noreuil Park by the river, at one of the many cafes around town or taking a short drive to nearby Bright. What are five things you couldn’t live without? My family, my friends, coffee, chocolate and good wine. What’s the number one health tip you’ve learnt over the years? That health is more than just exercising and eating healthily. It’s also about looking after your mental health and listening to your body and mind to know when you need to rest or take some time to relax. Quote to live by? “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.” J.K. Rowling

HOLY

MOLEY

YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS

If you’re going to be a regular at the beach this summer it’s imperative that you not only slip, slop, slap, seek and slide, but that you keep a close eye on your skin too. Make sure you’re aware of any new or changing moles, freckles and spots as two in three Australians will develop skin cancer before the age of 70. While skin cancer accounts for over 80% of all new cases of cancer diagnosed in Australia each year, it is almost entirely preventable.

16

Melanoma is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia so getting into the habit of checking your moles is extremely important, particularly for those with fair skin, a lot of moles across the body or an immediate family member has a history of skin cancer. Regular checks are recommended and if you notice any changes consult your GP for further investigation. You can use the ABCDE of melanoma detection to check for the following: ASYMMETRY – If the spot or lesion is divided in half, and the two halves are not a mirror image. BORDER – A spot with a spreading or irregular edge. COLOUR – A spot with a number of different colours through it. DIAMETER – A spot that is growing and changing in diameter or size.

Fig 1

EVOLVING – A spot that is changing and growing.

Fig 2

Figures 1 and 2 shows spots that have become increasingly irregular in shape or variable in colour. Images reproduced with permission from Dr John Kelly and the Australasian College of Dermatologists.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR MOLES Undress completely and make sure you check your whole body; try using a mirror so you don’t miss any places, such as your scalp and back. Get a friend or partner to help by looking at the parts of your skin you can’t see.

TYPES OF SKIN CANCER There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma accounts for about 70% of non-melanoma skin cancers and grows slowly over months or years. Squamous cell carcinoma accounts for about 30% of non-melanoma skin cancers and is often found on the lips, ears, scalp, backs of the hands and lower legs. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and accounts for 1-2% of skin cancers. It grows quickly over weeks to months and if left untreated can spread to other parts of the body and prove to be fatal. Cancer Council recommends using five forms of sun protection whenever the UV is 3 and above:

SLIP on protective clothing SLOP on SPF30+ or higher sunscreen SLAP on a broad-brimmed hat SEEK shade SLIDE on some sunglasses Chat with your local Blooms The Chemist Pharmacist for more information and product recommendations to help keep your skin safe this summer. https://www.cancer.org.au/about-cancer/types-of-cancer/skin-cancer/melanoma.html

ADVANTAGE

SUPPLEMENT

IRON

Iron is the most prevalent deficiency in the world with up to a third of the world population at risk of low iron.1 Low iron can cause symptoms such as fatigue, poor concentration, dizziness, a low immune system and pale skin. It can be difficult during menstruating years and pregnancy for women to get adequate levels of iron, due to the recommended daily intake being quite high (18mg for woman and 27mg for pregnant women).2 There are two forms of iron, haem and non-haem iron. Haem iron is easier for our bodies to absorb and can be found in animal products such as meat. Non-haem iron is sourced from plants and is difficult for our bodies to absorb. Most dietary supplements are in the form of non-haem iron. If you are vegetarian a 100g serve of cooked spinach contains only 3.6 mg of iron and a cup of kidney beans only contains 3.1mg of iron. This can make it quite difficult to eat enough food to obtain adequate iron levels. If you are at risk of low iron or anaemia it is best to discuss this with your GP or Pharmacist as iron, although necessary, can be toxic if levels are too high.

SUPPLEMENT

CALCIUM

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in our body, making up to 2% of our weight. It is needed for our bones, teeth, nerve impulses, blood clotting and many other processes. Research over the last couple of decades has highlighted that although calcium is vital to our health it often works best with co-factors such as vitamin D and vitamin K.

VITAMIN D

It’s been known since the 1930’s that vitamin D plays an important role in the absorption of calcium in the gut. Over the last 20 years it has gained significance due to increased rates of vitamin D deficiency, largely due to our increased sun awareness and decreased time spent outdoors. If you are taking calcium supplementation, look for one including vitamin D3.

VITAMIN K

Vitamin K has recently shown to be important to the utilisation of calcium in our body, helping to ensure once that calcium is deposited into our bones. If we are low in vitamin K, calcium can instead be deposited into our arteries leading to calcification and hardening. This can increase rates of cardiovascular disease. It can be particularly important to post-menopausal women as the risk of both bone density loss and cardiovascular disease increases. Women may take calcium supplementation, but research has suggested that vitamin K2 may help to reduce the risk of calcium being deposited in the arteries.4

ADVANTAGE

OMEGA-3 Omega-3 oils provide the essential fatty acids EPA & DHA that need to come either from our diets or supplements. They are needed for numerous processes in our body including supporting the brain, eyes, cardiovascular system, skin and reducing inflammation.

SUPPLEMENT Vitamin C is well known for its support of the immune system. It helps to support the bodies defence against pathogens through the skin barrier and the immune cells. During times of infection vitamin C levels can be affected due to the increased need for the vitamin in our bodies.5 Research shows that vitamin C’s role in supporting the immune system may be enhanced when combined with Zinc.

VITAMIN E Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that helps to protect omega-3 from oxidising. Oxidised oil can increase free radical damage in the body.

ADVANTAGE

ZINC

Zinc is used in over 200 processes in the body and is vital to the development of the immune response. Like vitamin C it helps with the barrier defence of the body, through the skin and in the development of immune cells.6 Due to the similar roles of vitamin C and zinc there is a strong rationale for using them in combination to reduce the duration of the common cold.7

ADVANTAGE

SUPPLEMENT

PROBIOTICS

Vitamin C at 25-100mg has shown to increase the absorption of non-haem iron by four-fold.3

ADVANTAGE

SUPPLEMENT

VITAMIN C

VITAMIN C

Probiotics have been extensively studied over the last decade and research continues to develop around the benefits that they contain for the body. Probiotics support our digestive and immune system, and can also help the gut brain axis, our nervous system and can help reduce inflammation. By increasing the good bacteria and improving the health of the digestive tract, it can impact on the nutrients absorbed through our diet.

PREBIOTICS

Prebiotics are necessary in our diet as “food” for our good bacteria. While probiotics provide good bacteria, prebiotics are a type of fibre that passes through the bowel undigested, helping to support the growth and colonization in the bowel.8

MAKING THE MOST OF

YOUR GYM MEMBERSHIP DON’T BE LIKE THE THOUSANDS OF OTHERS WHO GIVE UP ON THEIR GYM MEMBERSHIPS ONCE FEBRUARY HITS! WE SPOKE TO MAROUBRA FITNESS FIRST PERSONAL TRAINER TATUM LAWLER ABOUT MOTIVATION AND KEEPING YOURSELF ON TRACK WHETHER YOU’RE A NEWBIE TO THE GYM OR LOOKING TO GET BACK INTO YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE AFTER A HIATUS. Why is there an influx of gym-goers in January and such a decline in attendance soon after? People are definitely motivated by summer approaching, as winter can be such a difficult time to get up and get to the gym, especially if you aren’t an early riser. Plus, the end of year often makes us assess our health and wellness, so we approach the gym with more enthusiasm and motivation. How can we maintain the momentum of going to the gym after the New Year period has calmed down? I believe if you can find something you actually love doing then it won’t feel like a chore. Exercise should be enjoyed, and we are so lucky to live in a country where we have so many different types of physical activity available. As soon as you find your “thing” it will become a part of your routine and you won’t want to miss it.

What are your top three tips for beginners that are new to the gym? 1. Invest in a personal trainer if you are unsure of what to do in the gym. They will help and guide you through some sessions until you feel comfortable on your own. You might find you enjoy having a PT and continue working with them to keep you motivated and learn some new tricks! 2. Try all the classes the gym has to offer so you can find your happy place. You might enjoy a fair few classes and this can make planning your gym workouts much more fun and easier to stick to. 3. Pick a gym that is close to home or work, or one that you drive past daily. Convenience is key and will make your trip to the gym a lot easier, with fewer reasons to make excuses for skipping it. What are some things to look for when signing up to a gym? Do they have classes you think you’ll enjoy and does the timetable suit your schedule? Is it spacious? An overcrowded gym can become quite uncomfortable and it can be difficult to use equipment. Make sure there is enough parking near your gym; there is nothing worse than trying to find a car park and then missing your class! And ask to look at personal training profiles to make sure that there is one suited to you. How can we overcome feeling intimidated when joining a new gym? Join a gym where a friend trains and go with them a few times as this will make you feel more comfortable. You’ll begin to understand the layout of the gym better, plus there’s always a familiar face to reassure you. Again, personal trainers are wonderful for helping you if you are new to the gym. Once you feel confident in the gym, it and the people there will become your family. A happy, healthy environment that can only give you buzzing endorphins! Follow @tatum_lawler on Instagram.

LIVING A NOMADIC LIFE IS FAST BECOMING THE LATEST CRAZE FOR RETIREES, WITH THESE BABY BOOMERS SWAPPING FAMILIARITY AND COMFORT FOR LIFE ON THE ROAD. Caravan and camping holidays are more popular than ever, with Australians spending a total of 54.5 million nights on the road last year, according to the Caravan Industry Association of Australia (CIAA).1 "Grey nomads”, as they are fondly called, are typically couples aged over 55 who are seeking out adventure, wanting to experience ‘their own backyard.’ Jean and Barry Codling are proud to have been at the forefront of the grey nomad movement, hitting the road in 2002 for an 18-month adventure in their Toyota Landcruiser and Scenic Galaxy Caravan.

There doesn’t seem to be many downsides when living a nomadic lifestyle and, according to Jean, as long as you enjoy meeting like-minded people you will appreciate all there is to see and do. However, she does warn to be mindful when you’re in Northern Territory crocodile country and to respect the croc’s space!

The Codlings would do it all again in a heartbeat “if we were younger. But we are very glad that when we did go we were fit enough to do all that was out there. We would definitely have stayed longer in the places that we loved as well.”

“Having emigrated to Australia from the UK in 1970, we wanted to experience more of this amazing country. We loved every minute of travelling around Australia, with the beautiful landscapes, escarpments and the culture. We were lucky to be able to do it when we were at a reasonable age (62) so we could enjoy hiking through the many gorges and walks that were available to us,” Jean says. The couple rated Cairns and its surrounding areas as one of their favourite destinations, for the amazing rainforests, magical waterfalls and Cape Tribulation. Their experience of hand feeding Barramundi in Lake Placid was also unforgettable.

26

Being in confined quarters for a long period with your spouse can be enough to send even the most tolerant of partners around the bend. However, Jean believes this was a great opportunity to grow as a couple.

“The experience taught us to be tolerable of each other in confined conditions and to also enjoy the experience of rougher conditions. We learnt to do without life’s little luxuries when in the Outback and mining towns and let go of attachments to material things.” Without the easy access to technology that we have today, the couple did experience some challenges in planning their trip around fuel stops and caravan parks. While information was limited, word of mouth ended up being a great help and introduced them to like-minded travellers. “We can see why so many people enjoy travelling in retirement and beyond, you get to live a very happy and relaxed lifestyle. It all comes down to having fun, making sure you are prepared for anything and enjoying the experience,” Jean says.

LOOKING TO START YOUR VERY OWN NOMADIC ADVENTURE? JEAN AND BARRY CODLING PROVIDED THEIR MOST IMPORTANT TIPS THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU HIT THE ROAD.

- Do your homework beforehand. For example, work out how far you want to travel in the time you have and plan your daily distances and overnight stops accordingly. Pick your seasons to travel as you don't want to be up north in the wet season or high heat. - Be very aware of road trains, especially when overtaking three lengths in one go. - If you are a crafty person, take your bits and bobs with you and do your craft en-route to sell at markets, as there are so many out there where you can sell your wares. Are Caravan and camping holidays still a pastime reserved for the Grey Nomads? https://www.360finance.com.au/the-not-so-grey-nomads

Relationship Advice from the Older Generation RAY AND PAM HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOR OVER 50 YEARS. WITH VALENTINE'S DAY COMING UP, PAM SHARES HER THOUGHTS ON WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIP WORK. WHAT IS THE THING YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT RAY? There are many things I like about him, his compassion, his friendship, but the best I think is the way he cares for me. WHAT WERE YOUR INITIAL THOUGHTS WHEN YOU FIRST MET RAY? When I first saw him, I was instantly attracted to him. I definitely believe in an instant attraction at first sight; love comes next.

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO TO CREATE A SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIP? That’s easy…trust and communication. And being able to laugh together. WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE AVOID DOING IN A RELATIONSHIP? Trying to change someone from the person you married. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE SECRET TO A LONG-LASTING RELATIONSHIP? Secret… I’m not sure there is a secret. It’s important to have the same goals in life and remember there will always be ups and downs.

AFTER BEING TOGETHER FOR SO LONG, WHAT KEPT THE SPARK ALIVE? Respect and love for family. WHAT LOVE AND RELATIONSHIP ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF? Sit back and enjoy each other; money and wealth are not everything and you should work to live, not live to work. HOW DO YOU BELIEVE RELATIONSHIPS AND LOVE HAVE CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? I think the biggest thing that has changed is that a lot of people think long-term relationships are always sunshine and roses; they want all of the best things when they started out. And of course it’s not always like that when you’re in it for the long haul.

ALL ABOUT

HEARTBURN

Frequent heartburn can cause a burning pain in the chest, rising up to the throat. Heartburn is caused by food and acid from the stomach washing back into the oesophagus that can also result in an unpleasant sour taste (acid regurgitation).1 Frequent heartburn is heartburn that occurs two or more times per week, and it is more common than you might think. Approximately 1.6 million of Australian adult heartburn sufferers have frequent heartburn. There are some lifestyle changes that you can make to help to manage heartburn. Eating smaller meals, avoiding any food triggers and keeping to a healthy weight may help. Over the counter products such as NexiumÂŽ 24HR Once Daily Dosing may also help. Nexium 24HR is used for the lasting symptomatic relief of frequent heartburn, acid regurgitation and other symptoms associated with medically diagnosed gastrooesophageal reflux. The recommended dose is one tablet a day, and NexiumÂŽ 24HR should be taken for at least 7 days and up to 14 days.

SKIN CONDITIONS SUCH AS ECZEMA AND PSORIASIS CAN BE UNCOMFORTABLE, BUT THESE PRODUCTS AND TREATMENTS MAY HELP RELIEVE THE SYMPTOMS. Eczema is a recurring condition that affects people of all ages. With symptoms including dry, red and itchy skin, eczema can occur on the hands, face and neck. Constant scratching can make the condition worse and flare ups can occur at any time.1 Flare ups can be caused by dry skin, irritants or stress and every individual’s triggers can be different.2 While the direct cause of eczema is not known, it is common for people with eczema to have other allergies, suggesting that genetic factors may increase the tendency to develop the condition.3 Psoriasis is a skin condition where skin cells reproduce at a faster rate than usual. The outer layer of skin (epidermis) is constantly regenerating. This results in the formation of red patches and itchy, scaly skin. MooGoo Eczema & Psoriasis Cream is used for symptomatic relief of eczema and mild psoriasis. It can also be used as a treatment for dry or inflamed skin conditions and for minor skin disorders such as wounds, scratches, bruising, cuts and abrasions. Hope’s Relief Derma Lotion contains colloidal oatmeal and has nine extra skin moisturisers, providing a fine film to lock in moisture and nourish dry skin. With a lightweight feel the lotion calms itchy and irritated skin and is formulated with natural ingredients including sea buckthorn, shea butter, Kakadu plum, coconut oil and green tea. Cream E45 is a rich soothing, unperfumed and non-greasy cream. It brings relief to a wide range of dry skin conditions including flaking skin. OUR PEOPLE, OUR COMMUNITY

GOULBURN, NSW

Since 2016, Blooms The Chemist has partnered with Make-A-Wish Australia, raising over $600,000 to grant wishes for kids facing life-threatening illnesses. Wishes complement a child’s medical treatment, with the power to calm and inspire at the time they need it most. For Katrina, Retail Manager of Blooms The Chemist Goulburn Parkside, her son’s wish journey is an experience the entire family will never forget. In February 2014 my son Noah, at eight years of age, was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma, the fastest growing human tumour. Within three weeks he’d gone from having a temperature to his stomach swelling to the size of a football. He was desperately ill. If he was to have any chance of survival, we were told he’d have to undergo an aggressive form of chemotherapy. Doctors advised that the chemotherapy could in fact be what ended Noah’s life. As they prepared us for ICU, Kidney Dialysis and Life Support we knew Noah was in for the fight of his life. It was an extremely confronting and challenging time for our family.

Noah has two younger brothers; Hamish, who was six at the time, and Riley, who was four. We live in Goulburn, which meant over two hours’ drive to The Children's Hospital at Westmead. Thanks to the amazing support from our family and friends both my husband Mark and I were able to stay with Noah through the most critical phase. It was heart-wrenching to have to separate our boys during a time when we weren’t sure of the outcome. Riley has Down Syndrome, so we had to consider the best way to handle this situation. My husband and I tried to alternate the weeks we stayed with Noah in hospital, ensuring that at least one of us was at home with the younger boys as much as possible. We spent a lot of time at Ronald McDonald House at Westmead, where we’d have all the boys together for a sleepover and spend time as a family. The support we received from the Goulburn community was overwhelming; people organised multiple fundraisers, including one that completely sold out and absolutely filled the Goulburn Workers Club! Our team at the three Blooms The Chemist Goulburn stores were beyond amazing; they stepped up to support me at a time where I was just holding it together for my family. Mark and I both grew up in Goulburn and to see how Noah's journey affected so many people in our community really brought home to us how lucky we are to live here. After seven months in a children’s oncology ward, we were told that Noah would be granted a wish by Make-A-Wish Australia. We’d met families whose children had been granted their wish, and to see the joy and excitement on their faces was such a wonderful distraction from the reality we were all dealing with. One of the great things that Make-A-Wish does when granting a wish is to involve the whole family. The inclusion of Hamish and Riley was so important in making this day so special, as they also were greatly impacted by Noah’s illness. After a lot of thought and family discussion, and with the help from the wonderful ladies from our local MAW team, Noah decided he wanted a motorbike - what eight-year-old boy wouldn’t?! In March 2015 Noah’s wish was granted. He absolutely had no idea it was happening; we’d told him we were going to Wakefield Park to see a stunt bike show.

Riley (4), Noah (8) and Hamish (6).

34

Dave McKenna (Australian Stunt Bike Champion) started the day with an impressive bike display and Noah was shaking with excitement just watching the show. At the end of the show it was announced that the new Yamaha that Dave had next to him was actually for Noah as part of his wish; Noah was speechless. It took him a moment to process that yes, that was his very own motorbike!

Noah was five years in remission in September 2019. He turned 14 in May. Every birthday and Christmas we always take some time to reflect on how very lucky we are that he is here to celebrate these days with us. Some of the friends he made during treatment are no longer with us, and their families can’t celebrate those milestones. He’s in high school now, with an amazing group of friends. He is healthy, happy, and very aware of how lucky he is.

Katrina, Mark and the boys in 2019.

Noah being presented with a Yamaha motorbike.

Noah spent the entire next day riding his new bike, with all the gear and extras, including a Go Pro, until it was too dark to stay outside! His brothers also received Yamaha tents, sleeping bags, and so much more; it was just such an amazing experience for all of them.

I just wanted to thank each and every person that donates to Make-A-Wish Australia. You really are helping to make a difference to families with very sick children. The memories that Make-AWish create are something to be treasured, especially for those families not as fortunate as ours, who lose their loved one. To be able to reflect on such a happy and magical day is something that will stay with them for a lifetime. To celebrate Noah's five years in remission, Katrina has shared her family's story in a very personal "Our People, Our Community" video; watch it now on our Facebook page. #Wishforce
