Ask a Pharmacist Five FAQs About Diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2 PHARMACISTS ARE ALWAYS WILLING TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH. WITH DIABETES AFFECTING OVER 1.5 MILLION AUSTRALIANS, HERE ARE FIVE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CONDITION.1
4
by Casey Shannon
1. WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF DIABETES? The causes of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are very different. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition whereas type 2 diabetes occurs when the body builds resistance to insulin.2 Causes of diabetes vary depending on family history, health and environmental factors, genetic makeup and ethnicity but there is no common cause that fits every type of diabetes. In a healthy person, the pancreas is responsible for releasing insulin to help the body store sugar and use it as energy.3 Diabetes occurs when: • The pancreas does not produce any insulin • The pancreas produces very little insulin • The body does not respond appropriately to insulin; this is called insulin resistance Gestational diabetes is another type of diabetes which occurs when a woman is pregnant. The causes of gestational diabetes remain unknown, however the risk factors that increase the chance of gestational diabetes include: 1. Being overweight or obese 2. Polycystic ovarian syndrome 3. Larger baby 4. Family history of gestational diabetes 5. Ethnicity 2. CAN I REVERSE MY DIABETES? Current evidence suggests it is not possible to reverse type 1 diabetes as it is an autoimmune condition.4 It is possible to put prediabetes and type 2 diabetes into remission by following a strict diet and losing weight.5 Gestational diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born but there is an increased chance that the mother who has gestational diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes later in life.6 Once diagnosed with diabetes it is important to stay healthy by regularly monitoring your blood sugar levels, weight, cholesterol and blood pressure. It is also important to develop a good relationship with your diabetes educator, GP and Pharmacist as they can help detect complications early. 3. I HAVE TYPE 1 DIABETES; WILL I ALWAYS NEED INSULIN? Unfortunately, yes. Since type 1 diabetes is caused by damage to cells in the pancreas, it is not likely that these cells will ever recover.7 Therefore, people with type 1 diabetes will require insulin for the rest of their life. Without insulin, the body cannot turn glucose into energy and will start burning its own fats as a substitute. When this happens, dangerous chemicals are released into the blood which can accumulate and potentially be lifethreatening if it is not treated. This is called ketoacidosis.8 4. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TESTING AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TEST MY BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS? It is extremely important to test blood sugar levels as a diabetic. Blood glucose monitoring can help you balance your food with your activity, lifestyle and diabetes medications. There are two different blood glucose tests: a. You can test your daily blood glucose concentration – Depending on directions from your doctor and diabetes educator, you could test your blood sugar levels a number of times throughout the day. Possible times to check are: • Before breakfast (fasting) • Before lunch/dinner • Two hours after a meal • Before bed • Before rigorous exercise • When you are feeling unwell
b. HbA1c test – A HbA1c test gives you an average level of blood sugar over the past three months. People who have diabetes need to test this regularly to see if they are staying within a specific range, and it will also determine if their medication is working. Your doctor will send you with a referral to a pathology for this test. It is important to follow directions specified by your diabetes educator and/or GP as they would be tailored to your individual needs. 5. CAN I PREVENT DIABETES-RELATED COMPLICATIONS? Yes, you can prevent complications. Diabetes-related complications can include damage to large blood vessels which are classified as ‘macrovascular complications’ and to small blood vessels which is classified as ‘microvascular complications’.9 Macrovascular complications can cause damage to: • Heart • Lungs • Brain Microvascular complications can cause damage to: • Kidney • Feet • Nerves • Eyes • Teeth • Skin Research shows that early diagnosis of diabetes can help prevent further complications if managed appropriately.10 People with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar and cholesterol levels as well as their blood pressure. It is also important to screen for complications even though it can take some time for complications to develop after the onset of high blood sugar levels. Screening should start from the time of diagnosis to ensure complications are identified early.11 Another complication people with diabetes can develop is obstructive sleep apnoea. Diabetes and obstructive sleep apnoea are common disorders that often coexist as they have similar risk factors such as obesity and heart disease.12 Obstructive sleep apnoea is a disorder where a person repeatedly stops breathing for a small period of time during their sleep. This can result in reduced oxygen flow to the person’s organs, including the brain.13 It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of sleep apnoea if you have diabetes. Visit your local Blooms The Chemist and talk to your Pharmacist for more information on Blood Glucose Screening, diabetes monitoring and management and obstructive sleep apnoea. Baby Brain? THESE ESSENTIAL ITEMS AND ACTIVITIES MAY HAVE SLIPPED YOUR MIND AS YOU NAVIGATE THROUGH THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF PREGNANCY. GENTLE EXERCISE Exercise may help to improve the overall health of pregnant women, decreasing fatigue, enhancing sleep and improving moods.1 Engaging in regular exercise can ultimately help to improve both psychological and physical well-being. Gentle exercise such as yoga and water aerobics along with brisk walks are great ways to implement a consistent exercise routine. When exercising you should be able to hold a conversation; if you’re breathless when you talk you are pushing yourself too hard. It’s also important to avoid exercising in warmer temperatures and always drink plenty of water. Be sensible with the type and amount of exercise you take on. It’s a good idea to chat with your GP or OBGYN doctor regarding the best type of exercise for you when you’re expecting. MOISTURISING CREAM An itchy stomach is a common symptom as your baby bump grows, due to the skin rapidly expanding and losing essential moisture within the dermal layers. Try to refrain from scratching and relieve the itch with a soothing, fragrance-free moisturiser or anti-itch cream. A PREGNANCY PILLOW A pregnancy pillow can do wonders for your quality of sleep and help reduce back aches and pain. They are specially designed pillows that support the changing curves of the body, helping you to find the best sleeping position. They can differ in shape and size but are commonly either U or C shaped to better fit the body. Pregnancy pillows can also help with blood circulation and may help to relieve heartburn.2 There is no perfect time to start using a pregnancy pillow, it all comes down to when you start to feel uncomfortable and need that extra support. FLU VACCINATION Getting a flu vaccination is an extremely important step towards protecting yourself and your baby. Even if you’re generally healthy, changes in immune, heart, and lung functions during pregnancy can make you more likely to fall ill from the flu.3 Annual immunisation is the most effective strategy for preventing influenza in pregnant women, estimating to prevent 1 to 2 hospitalisations per 1000 women vaccinated during the second or third trimester.4 You can get a flu vaccination at any time during your pregnancy, with the antibodies taking up to four weeks to work. Some of these antibodies can then pass onto your baby during your pregnancy and may also be passed through breast milk.5 Not only will it protect you, but the vaccination will also help to protect your baby from the flu in the first few months after birth.6 Your local Blooms The Chemist Pharmacist can administer flu vaccinations for pregnant women and anybody over the age of nine without a booking or prescription, however it’s advisable to call ahead during peak times. After the flu vaccination your Pharmacist will record your vaccination on the Australian Immunisation Register and ask you to remain seated in the pharmacy for 15 minutes in case of any reactions. Do you have high cholesterol? BlooD glucose spikes after meals? Betaglucare is a concentrated source of beta-glucan, a soluble fibre found in oats. It is made from high quality Scandinavian oats containing high molecular weight (MW) beta-glucan. When eaten in the required quantity daily Betaglucare reduces your LDL cholesterol and reduces blood glucose levels after meals. Studies have shown that high MW beta-glucans are more effective.
how does it work? The soluble fibre forms a thick gel in the gut when it reaches the stomach. The gel binds with bile acid which contains LDL cholesterol and then exits naturally. The gel also coats the inside of your small intestine, which slows down the absorption of carbohydrates from your meal. As a result, the rise in your blood glucose levels is reduced.
how do i consume it? The powder is easy to add to your favourite smoothie. You can also mix it into a fruit juice. It’s ideal to have with lunch or dinner to reduce blood glucose levels after meals.
The crispy oat hearts are ideal as a breakfast on it’s own with milk or you can add fresh fruit, yoghurt or your favourite breakfast cereal. It’s a low GI food in itself.
patient testimonials “I have been using Betaglucare for the past 3 years and my Doctor agreed I should try the product. 3 years ago a routine blood test placed my cholesterol at 5.9. After 6 months of consuming Betaglucare every day my cholesterol dropped to 3.9 and now 3 years later it is still 3.9” Joanne from Dural, NSW “I’ve been on insulin for more than a decade now and my sugars used to spike and then dip suddenly. Betaglucare has helped stabilize my levels just by changing my breakfast. The frequency of lows has gone down. The best part of Betaglucare is you can add the powder to your smoothie and make a quick breakfast!” Prachi from Girraween, NSW

Common Sleep Apnoea Questions by Briana Kasinkas ONE IN FOUR AUSTRALIAN ADULTS ARE AT RISK OF DEVELOPING SLEEP APNOEA, WITH THE CONDITION OFTEN GOING UNNOTICED DUE TO A LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND KNOWLEDGE.1 SLEEP APNOEA-TRAINED DISPENSARY TECHNICIAN BRIANA KASINKAS FROM BLOOMS THE CHEMIST SURRY HILLS ANSWERS SOME COMMON QUESTIONS AND MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT SLEEP APNOEA.
T
he most common misconception about sleep apnoea is thinking the condition means you have trouble sleeping at night, that you wake up several times throughout the night or are just generally tired during the day. It’s not widely understood that sleep apnoea is a condition where your breathing can actually stop while you are asleep. This is known as an 'apnoea'. Often the only way to find out whether you stop breathing at night is by having an at-home sleep test. Another misconception is that sleep apnoea only affects a particular type of person, mainly overweight or obese men. From my experience, sleep apnoea can affect a diverse range of people, including some who seem otherwise fit and healthy. Patients also seem to think that a positive sleep apnoea test result will mean that they will have to use a CPAP machine for the rest of their lives, but there are ways to avoid this. MOST COMMON QUESTIONS:
Q: If I’m diagnosed with sleep apnoea, will I have to use a CPAP machine forever? A: CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines apply mild air pressure to a person’s upper airway by using an air pump and mask to keep their airway open so that they can breathe normally 1 2 3
while they sleep.2 However, there are other possibilities for treatment, including surgery, or mouth guards. Many who do use a CPAP machine find that as soon as the soft palate tissue is no longer collapsing, they lose a lot of weight naturally. This means the soft palate tissue stays open and they no longer require the machine. Q: If I lose weight, can I avoid using a CPAP machine? A: In many cases, being overweight can have an effect on your sleep apnoea, and vice versa. Many customers who are trying to lose weight and are doing absolutely everything right still can’t manage to lose that weight. Once they are tested for sleep apnoea, and are put on CPAP therapy, the airways are forced open, and the weight drops off quickly. Sleep apnoea can cause weight gain due to the fact that poor sleep quality can influence the production of hormones related to appetite.3 Weight gain as well can also lead to sleep apnoea, as an increase in weight can cause fat to accumulate in the neck area, which can obstruct breathing. Visit your doctor for more information on a weight-loss plan that is best suited for you.

Q: How does a Sleep Apnoea Test work? A: The machine we use to test for sleep apnoea is called the Alice One. The customer straps a machine that looks like a small box around their chest which is attached to an oximeter and a nasal cannula. The machine can read their pulse, record their oxygen levels and can provide data that can identify full and partial closures of the soft palate tissue, how many times it happens and how long each instance lasted. It can also give data as to how many times a person snores, and whether they were on their back or side, with the timing of each position recorded. If you are having trouble sleeping, believe that you may have sleep apnoea or just want to find out more about this common sleep condition, visit your local Blooms The Chemist and speak to one of our sleep-apnoea trained team members.
Briana Kasinkas is a dispensary technician at Blooms The Chemist Surry Hills. Since joining the Blooms The Chemist family she has been a passionate advocate for sleep health and sleep apnoea testing. She loves seeing how people’s lives can change completely once starting CPAP therapy.

The importance of fish oil by Peta Teuma YOU'VE MOST LIKELY HEARD ABOUT THE SUPPLEMENT FISH OIL, AND THAT IT’S WISE TO TAKE IT DAILY. THEY ARE ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR SUPPLEMENTS TAKEN IN AUSTRALIA, BUT DO YOU KNOW WHY YOU ACTUALLY NEED IT?
F
ish oil contains omega 3, providing essential fatty acids (EFAs) eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) plus additional fats. They are known as EFAs because we cannot manufacture them in our bodies and must take them in through our diet. Food sources include fatty fish, such as herring, salmon, sardines, and plant sources such as chia, flax and hemp seeds. Our body uses EFAs to support the normal growth and development of the brain, eyes (retina) and nervous system along with the health of our joints and skin. They also help to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system and reduce inflammation. Our brain is almost 60% fat and without EFAs it can’t perform properly. While most of the brain development occurs by the age of six, EFAs are still needed for the brain to send messages, and low levels of EFAs have been shown to impact memory and concentration. DHA is the dominant fatty acid in the brain, central nervous system and the retina of the eyes.
When inflammation occurs in our body it uses fats known as arachidonic acids that come from dairy, meat and eggs. Omega 3 fatty acids work to reduce the inflammatory pathways, which in turn may help with arthritis. Omega 3s also support cardiovascular health by reducing elevated triglycerides (a type of fat found in the blood) and helping to lower blood pressure. Higher triglycerides can increase the risk of metabolic conditions and heart disease. Fish oil also plays an important role in the health of our skin. It helps to reduce photoageing due to its role in reducing inflammation. It works to maintain the skin’s barrier which can be broken down in conditions such as dermatitis and eczema. Studies show that supplementing with fish oil can increase skin hydration by 30% after only 60 days. During the Winter months our skin can become drier due to the harsh weather conditions and indoor heating. It’s wise to consider increasing your supplementation if you notice your skin becoming dry and irritated.
It’s important to note that it’s best to obtain omega 3 from dietary sources, with the Australian Heart Foundation recommending two-three serves of fatty fish per week to achieve the desired amount of 250–500 milligrams (mg) of marine-sourced omega. Supplements should be seen as a way to complement your diet and not as your primary source of EFAs. When choosing a fish oil supplement check the label for the level of EPA and DHA in each capsule. A standard 1000mg fish oil supplement contains 180mg EPA and 120mg DHA providing 300mg of EFAs. The minimum needed to achieve the recommended dose is two capsules daily. If your body has a higher need for EFAs the dose increases. Visit your local Blooms The Chemist and discuss with your Pharmacist if taking a concentrated fish oil supplement is right for you. What’s your routine?
OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS OUR ROUTINES HAVE BEEN DRASTICALLY ALTERED. WHEN LIFE SLOWLY STARTS RETURNING TO A NEW KIND OF NORMAL, IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO REFLECT ON YOUR OLD ROUTINE AND ASSESS WHETHER IT CONTINUES TO WORK FOR YOU. WHILE OPRAH MAY MEDITATE AT 6AM AND BILL GATES MAY ONLY EAT ORGANIC OATS WHILE WATCHING THE NEWS, ROUTINES ARE VERY SUBJECTIVE. WE’VE ENLISTED THE HELP OF MADELEINE DORE, WHO HAS SPENT HER TIME INTERVIEWING CREATIVE PEOPLE ABOUT THEIR ROUTINES, TO SHED SOME LIGHT ON WHAT SHE BELIEVES IS THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL ROUTINE.
M
adeleine started her website Extraordinary Routines in 2014 after finding herself curious about the many ways of paving a career path.
“How did people make it work, day by day? How do people juggle the various parts of their daily lives? How do they pave their own way? I think this is a very common curiosity because often we are only privy to a curated version of someone’s work or life. I’ve found this particular interview format to be a great way to illuminate diversity of experiences of creating a career path – the lack of routine, the burnout, the challenges, the floundering, the emotional, mental and financial strains that from the outside can be hidden from view,” Madeleine says. Madeleine is a strong believer in embracing the ups and downs of life rather than striving for a particular routine. “I think the ebb and flow is inevitable; our energy and attention can fluctuate throughout a day and can be dependent on so many internal and external factors (our mental health, how well we slept, what's happening in the world around us). Often, we need to embrace the ebb or the break as it can be what helps nourish, refuel and refocus us.” Madeleine suggests that, while structure can be a great guide, providing shape to our days and direction to our lives, finding what works for you is the most important aspect. “That can
22
mean experimenting and being flexible, and even doing away with structure if it's no longer serving you,” she says. While creativity and structure can appear to be polar opposites, Madeleine believes that when creativity and routine is combined, something extraordinary happens. “When you show up again and again to the page or the canvas or whatever pursuit you might have, even when you don't feel like it or when you doubt yourself, you start to build creativity just like a muscle, strengthening it against the whims of distraction or imposter syndrome,” she said. Having interviewed a range of creative people, including the likes of political commentator and author Jamila Rizvi, comedian Tim Ross and designer Lisa Gorman, Madeleine has found some commonalities between most of them. “I think many of the people I've interviewed are learning to become more comfortable with doing nothing – to overcome productivity-guilt, embrace wasted time, and seeing the richness in quiet moments,” she said. “I’ve also learnt the importance of being kind to yourself – no matter where you're at with your practice or routine. I believe that a successful routine is the one that works for you and adds more joy into your life than taking it away.” To gain inspiration and ideas from a range of creatives, visit www.extraordinaryroutines.com.
R.I.C.E.R. RECOVER FROM INJURY WITH THE HELP OF
When soft tissue injuries like sprains and strains occur, the body sends a large volume of blood to the injury site resulting in bleeding, swelling and pain. If the initial injury treatment is inadequate, bulky painful scar tissue can develop. By following the guidelines of R.I.C.E.R. and using the correct first aid procedure in the hours following injury, you will improve your chances of a full recovery.
REST
ICE
COMPRESSION
ELEVATION
REFERRAL
If you experience an injury, rest is an important part helping reduce the risk of making the injury worse. Where possible, take the weight off the injured part of the body.
SELF-STICK
To help reduce swelling and pain, apply ice for 20 minutes 3-5 times per day. Have at least 1.5 hours rest between applications. Keep the ice treatment going for up to 72 hours to provide relief from pain and swelling. Wrap a bandage around the injury plus above and below the injury site to provide a good compression. You can also use a bandage to help secure a compress (as shown)
If the injury is on the lower leg or foot, such as a sprained ankle, elevate the leg above the hip. When lying in bed, place a pillow under your leg. If the injury is on the arm, use a sling.
You may need to seek medical advice for an assessment of your injury. A medical professional can then prepare an injury management plan for your recovery and rehabilitation.

What you need to know about men's health HEALTH SHOULD BE EVERYONE’S TOP PRIORITY BUT, FOR MANY MEN, IT CAN FALL TO THE WAYSIDE. REGULAR DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENTS MAY BE LEFT UNBOOKED AND ANY NIGGLING CONCERNS REMAIN UNCHECKED, WITH A SURVEY BY THE CLEVELAND CLINIC INDICATING MEN WILL DO ALMOST ANYTHING TO AVOID GOING TO THE DOCTOR.1
According to the Australian Medical Association, men are more likely than women to experience serious health problems, have a higher mortality rate, and die in more significant numbers from almost all non-sex-specific health problems.2 It’s important that men and their support networks are aware of the range of available resources and Men’s Health Week (June 15 to 21) is the perfect time to highlight health issues facing men across Australia.
26
BARRIERS TO HEALTHCARE
WEIGHT
According to research, men may be more reluctant to speak freely about their health concerns or seek treatment from their GPs. They are more likely to put off regular check-ups and only visit a health professional when their illness has reached an advanced stage, leading to further complications or even death. Almost one in four males haven’t seen a doctor in 12 months (compared with one in 10 females).3 A study by the Mayo Clinic asserts more men reported higher incidents of serious health issues than women, including hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and tobacco use.4
The stigma surrounding weight and mental health is also a factor to consider. A study from the University of Connecticut explained that both experienced and internalised weight stigma were associated with more depressive symptoms and more dieting behaviours in men.11 Men who experienced weight stigma had increased odds of engaging in binge eating and men who internalised weight stigma had lower self-rated health.12
RESOURCES Beyond Blue’s tireless efforts in creating awareness around mental health issues, especially anxiety and depression, has made it one of Australia's most important mental health-related organisations. Beyond Blue’s primary mission is to equip Australians with knowledge and resources that will empower them to seek the right kind of treatment for their mental health concerns and reduce the high suicide rate in our country.
Men’s perception of their health was also different to that of women, with the research suggesting that men felt they were as healthy as women despite having more medical problems.
SLEEP APNOEA Men are more likely than women to have obstructive sleep apnoea. An Australian study published in 2018 found that 25% of men and 13.3% of women had diagnosed or possible undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea.5 Some sleep apnoea risk factors include obesity, being over 65 years of age and having a family history of the condition. Symptoms can include snoring, constant irritability or falling asleep during the day.6 An at-home sleep test can determine if you have sleep apnoea; ask your local Blooms The Chemist Pharmacist for more information on this condition and testing options.
Beyond Blue’s work in men’s health include its ‘Beyond Barriers’ programme, encouraging men to take action against anxiety and depression by reducing barriers to seeking support and the ‘Healthy Dads’ project which aims to support the mental health of men during the transition to fatherhood. Visit beyondblue.org.au for more information. Mates4Mates is a charity that supports current and former Australian Defence force members and their families who were wounded during the tenure of their service. They offer a range of physical rehabilitation and wellbeing services in both individual and group settings. Delivered by qualified professionals, the services involve yoga, acupuncture and equine therapy. Find out more at mates4mates.org
STROKE In 2009, male stroke incidence rates were 33% higher and stroke prevalence 41% higher than females, with research also stating that increases in the global burden of stroke have been greater amongst men.7,8 A stroke can occur when brain cells do not get enough oxygen or nutrients, where blood stops moving through the artery because it’s blocked by a blood clot or because the artery breaks or bursts.
New start-up VetNet works towards providing Veterans with a simplified network of available resources. Their aim to raise awareness of support options relies on community input to build a repository of service providers, products or services that are directly and specifically available to Veterans’ and their families. To find out more or to help VetNet help others, head to visitvetnet.com
Most strokes are preventable because they are associated with lifestyle-related risk factors such as exercise and nutrition. There are some risk factors for stroke that you cannot do anything about, such as: family history, age, gender (sex) and ethnic background. However, if you have any of these risk factors, improving your lifestyle is even more important to reduce your risk of having a stroke. A Blooms The Chemist Stroke Risk Assessment takes less than 10 minutes and is an initial step toward stroke risk prevention. Your Pharmacist will take your blood pressure and ask a series of simple lifestyle, familial history, and age-related questions, to assess your overall risk of stroke.
Australian Men’s Shed Association is a source of practical support, specialised services and resources to more than 1000 Men’s Sheds in Australia. The present-day Men’s Shed is a modern take on the backyard shed of yore that was an intrinsic part of Australian culture. Men’s Sheds are found in Australian cities and towns, and internationally. Visit mensshed.org to find a men’s shed in your area.
MENTAL HEALTH Mental health is often dismissed as a concern for males due to outdated societal expectations and stigma that surrounds men seeking help. On average, one in eight men will experience depression and one in five men will experience anxiety at some stage of their lives.9 Men make up an average six out of every eight suicides every single day in Australia. The number of men who die by suicide in Australia every year is nearly double the national road toll.10 Men may also struggle to seek out mental health organisations and helplines or find social connections that support their emotional health. More awareness of mental health issues and support resources is needed to encourage freer conversations around men and mental health. If you or someone you know is struggling, call Lifeline's 24 hour telephone crisis support line on 13 11 14. If it's an emergency, dial 000.

Stay Warm This Winter There are numerous ways to keep warm this Winter besides layering up in sweaters or hibernating under mountains of blankets. We’ve gathered the best remedies and activities for when you’re really feeling the chill. THE HOT DATE WATER BOTTLE will keep you toasty and warm throughout the night and can also be used to soothe arthritic and period pain. Not only will they be reducing your electricity bill, but when properly secured hot water bottles can be much safer than electric heaters and blankets. HOT HANDS HAND WARMERS are single-use air-activated heat packs that provide up to ten hours of continuous warmth for the hands, great for when you’re working outside, jogging or watching sports. BODICHEK WHEAT PACKS are a great natural alternative for pain management as well as providing warmth throughout Winter. LIFESTYLE You may still have the best intentions to exercise in Winter but the reality is that early morning jogging sessions may prove difficult. Try adapting your exercise options to the weather, taking up more Winter-friendly activities such as yoga or indoor aerobics. Hot yoga is a great way to work out while building up a sweat; performed in a room warmed to about 38 degrees celsius, it’s the perfect activity to raise your temperature. Plus, swimming shouldn’t just be considered as a Summer activity; try your local aquatics centre and have a swim in the indoor heated pool. Hot drinks and soups are perfect for the cooler months, helping to raise your core temperature. Create your own concoctions at home or take a thermos with you if you’re on the run. Pepper, turmeric or chilli-infused soups are all wonderful ways to warm up your body and provide an extra kick to your average soup choices. Don’t forget to lean on your usual favourites such as tea, coffee and hot chocolate to help you survive those chilly mornings.

WHO ARE YOU HELPING? - Pregnant women and young children - People who have anaemia and who need blood transfusions - Accident victims who have lost blood - Severe-burn victims, who can require up to 20 units of blood for their treatment - Those undergoing cancer and blood-disease treatment - Surgical patients including those undergoing life-saving surgical procedures Of all the blood donated in Australia, 34% goes towards helping cancer and blood-disease patients and another 18% helps surgical patients, like those undergoing open-heart surgery.2 WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GIVE BLOOD? You will need to fill out a donor questionnaire when you arrive; a trained staff member will go over your questionnaire answers with you and ask some more questions to check that you're fine to donate. They will then give you a 'finger prick' test to check your level of haemoglobin (a protein which contains iron) and test your blood pressure. You then get to sit back and relax while you donate, while a staff member keeps an eye on you to make sure you’re okay. After your donation is finished, you get to rest for at least 15-20 minutes. The whole appointment takes about one hour to complete, with the actual blood donation taking 5-15 minutes.
Thinking about donating blood?
WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DONATE? Along with donating blood, you may also be able to donate plasma or platelets. Our blood is made up of 55% plasma and carries your red and white blood cells and platelets around your body.3 The process of donating works by taking some of your blood, keeping the plasma and then returning the rest back to you. Platelets are the tiny 'plates' in blood that wedge together to help clotting and reduce bleeding. The process of donating works similar to plasma, where some of your blood is collected, the platelets are kept, and the rest of the blood is returned to you. Plasma or platelet donations take 45 minutes, and the whole appointment takes one and a half hours. You can donate blood every 12 weeks, so in fact you can save 12 people’s lives every year. Donated blood can only be stored for 42 days, which is why giving frequently is so important, and with over 100 centres across Australia now is the perfect time to donate. Plus, after you have donated, you will be reminded of the generous gift you’ve given others when you receive a text message saying how your donated blood is being used. You may be eligible to donate blood if you are between 18-75 years old, weigh 50kg or more and are fit and healthy. For more information on requirements and eligibility, visit donateblood.com.au/eligibility For more information on blood donation and to find your nearest donor centre, visit donateblood.com.au
YOU SHOULD CONSIDER YOURSELF A HERO EVERY TIME YOU DONATE BLOOD; WITH EVERY BLOOD DONATION YOU GIVE, YOU ARE HELPING TO SAVE THREE LIVES. WE NEED MORE THAN 26,000 DONATIONS PER WEEK TO KEEP AUSTRALIA’S SUPPLY TOPPED UP AND WINTER IS THE TIME WHEN IT’S NEEDED MOST.1

All about moisturisers Moisturising should be a vital part of your skincare routine, regardless of your skin type. The skin is the largest organ in the human body and desperately needs protecting. Moisturiser helps the skin by keeping it soft and hydrated, with heavier formulations great for drier skin types.
There are three main types of ingredients that give your moisturiser its unique properties; emollients, humectants and occlusives. These three ingredients can be found in many of your personal care and cosmetic products, including facial creams, lip balms and body cleansers. Emollients hydrate the skin by filling in and smoothing the crevices that may appear when you have dry skin. Emollient ingredients can include oils, esters and lipids (fats). Humectants work by drawing in water from the environment around you to the skin’s surface and keeping it there. Humectant products include ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid and honey and are recommended for those with normal to slightly dry skin. Occlusive substances work by forming a protective layer on top of the skin to keep moisture locked in. They can be quite heavy and may cause breakouts for acne-prone skin, therefore are more often recommended for drier skin types. Occlusive ingredients include dimethicone, silicone and waxes. QV MOISTURISING CREAM is a rich, protective cream that uses its emollient properties to help replenish the skin and help hydrate dry areas. It contains squalene, a natural component found in the skin’s oil. QV Moisturising Cream helps to seal in natural moisture by acting as a protective barrier and is suitable for skin conditions such as dry, scaly skin, eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. E45 DERMATOLOGICAL CREAM brings relief to a wide range of dry skin conditions including flaking skin. It also helps soften rough, hard skin on the parts of the body. E45 cream reduces skin dryness in conditions such as eczema. ALWAYS READ THE LABEL. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR USE. IF SYMPTOMS PERSIST TALK TO YOUR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL. DERMAVEEN DAILY NOURISH MOISTURISING LOTION seals in moisture, working as an emollient to leave skin smooth, supple and healthy. It contains 100% natural colloidal oatmeal to effectively calm, hydrate and protect the skin and is suitable for normal to mild skin sensitivity or dry skin, infants, adults and the elderly. THE JOJOBA COMPANY ULTIMATE YOUTH POTION works as an emollient, helping to boost skin hydration and restore healthy skin lipids. Using the full spectrum of vitamins, antioxidants and essential omegas from pure jojoba and plant oils, this facial oil is enriched with the patented L22 formula which mimics the skin lipid profile of a healthy 22-year-old. HOWEVER, THROUGH GENEROSITY, SUPPORT AND CAMARADERIE, THE STORE WAS UP AND RUNNING AGAIN WITHIN SIX MONTHS.

harmacist and Blooms The Chemist Umina owner Markos Atalla was devastated by the loss of his pharmacy. He woke that Sunday morning to hundreds of missed calls and messages, before venturing to the shell of the building that had been his second home for years. Markos’ first concern was that of his customers; what would happen to their scripts? How would they get their medication? With the help of the Umina Fire and Rescue crew, most of the prescriptions on file were able to be recovered. Fellow Central Coast store Blooms The Chemist Erina stepped in to assist, offering Umina customers free delivery from the Erina store to ensure no customers were left without vital medication. “Probably the best thing that came out of it was just to realise how much loyalty there is in the Umina suburb, because everybody wanted to stick with the Blooms The Chemist Umina team and stay with Markos,” says Luke Owen, Blooms The Chemist Erina Pharmacist. “One of the first questions that customers asked me was ‘Are all the staff still there with you?’ and I said ‘Yes, we don’t leave each other in bad times',” Markos says. “It’s not just a business, it’s about caring for the community and individuals.” The impact of the fire on the pharmacy and the local community was immediately apparent; within minutes of an update being posted to Blooms The Chemist’s Facebook page, directing customers to an emergency number and the plan to manage scripts and customers’ medication needs,

comments began flooding in, expressing dismay, sympathy and outstanding support for the pharmacy team they had come to know and love.
“It’s so good to be back! The Baby Club has been running for so long now I’m weighing the babies of the women who I also weighed as babies when I first started”, Anne laughs. “You can’t change what’s happened, but the new store looks beautiful and I’ve got my own little room.” Kimberly, a dispensary technician at Blooms The Chemist Umina and a well-known face for regular customers, was in tears on the day the pharmacy burnt down, not knowing where she would go the following day. “But Markos was great,” she says, “We were one day without work and now we’ve gotten through it. And here we are again back in our own little place,” she says. For Kim, being part of customers’ lives is more than a job; it’s a true vocation. The road to recovery included relocating the pharmacy to its new location in West Street, Umina Beach. In a testament to the relationships the Blooms The Chemist Umina team hold with their community, hundreds turned out for the official grand reopening in July 2019. Anne Craine has been the Blooms The Chemist Umina’s Baby Club Coordinator for over 26 years, becoming a bit of a role model for mums in the community, providing guidance and knowledge, as well as cherished photos of babies, documenting their growth and development. Excited to reopen the Baby Club, Anne is thrilled with the new premises.
“There’s nothing that gives me more pleasure than when a customer comes in and goes, ‘Kim I need to talk to you’ or ‘Is Kim here?’. It makes me feel so special and the fact that I make them feel special as well is a really good feeling.” The Umina community has continuously rallied around the store, with their loyal customers singing praises to Markos and the team. “I’m just so glad they’re back”, said a regular customer at the grand opening. “It doesn’t matter what question you ask, how personal it can get, they look after you and they do it with smiling faces, it’s a bit like family really.” Watch the full video on facebook.com/ BloomsTheChemistPharmacy
