WHAT ARE ALLERGIES? WHAT IS AN ALLERGY?
PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF ALLERGIES
Allergy occurs when a person's immune system reacts to a substance in the environment that is harmless to most people. This substance is called an allergen.
Most allergic reactions are mild-to-moderate, and do not cause major problems. Some allergies can interfere with a person’s day-to-day activities. There are several products available to help prevent and/or treat your allergies, such as:
WHAT ARE ALLERGENS?
4
Allergens can be found in:
Antihistamines
• dust mites • pollen (grass, weed or tree) • foods such as peanuts, cow's milk, soy, seafood and eggs • cats and other furry or hairy animals such as dogs, horses, rabbits and guinea pigs • insect stings and tick bites • moulds • medicines
Antihistamines work by blocking the release of histamine from mast cells, resulting in reduced swelling and inflammation.
HOW DOES AN ALLERGIC REACTION OCCUR? When a person who is allergic to an allergen, encounters the allergen, an allergic reaction occurs. An allergic reaction involves the release of a substance called, histamine, from special cells in the body, called mast cells. Histamine results in swelling and inflammation. WHAT ARE ALLERGY SYMPTOMS? Depending on the allergen and where it enters your body, you may experience different symptoms such as: Eyes
Watery eyes, allergic conjunctivitis
Nose Runny nose, stuffy nose, sneezing, allergic rhinitis Lungs Cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, allergic asthma Skin
Rash, hives, eczema
Stomach and Bowel Nausea and vomiting General
Headache, fever, fatigue
Antihistamines are available as tablets (in both non-drowsy and drowsy formulations), eye drops and nasal sprays. Intranasal corticosteroid nasal sprays (INCS) INCS are used to prevent and treat moderate-to-severe allergic rhinitis (hay fever). Combination therapies (INCS and antihistamine) Combination therapies are used for the treatment of severe and prolonged allergic rhinitis (hay fever). Decongestants Decongestants are used to unblock the nose. Available in tablets and nasal sprays. They should be used with caution in patients who have heart conditions, such as high blood pressure and angina. Non-medicated treatments such as saline sprays Saline is used for treating allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. Saline products are available as drops, sprays and irrigation. Tip: Saline can be used to rinse the nasal passages prior to using an INCS.
Allergies affect around 1 in 5 Australians at some point in their lives. Allergies are more common in children but can affect anyone and can occur at any time and at any age. There are different types of allergies such as seasonal allergies (often triggered by pollen during certain times of the year), dust allergies triggered by dust-mites, and skin allergies that can result in hives, and/ or contact dermatitis.
5
DID YOU KNOW ATOPY is the genetic tendency to develop allergic conditions. AÂ person with atopy is said to be atopic. ANAPHYLAXIS is a severe type of an allergic reaction. Anaphylaxis requires immediate life-saving medication. Anaphylaxis is often caused by allergens in peanuts, shellfish, insect stings or drugs. If you have a very severe allergy, speak to your doctor or pharmacist about an Anaphylaxis Management Plan.

SURVIVE THE SILLY SEASON
The last few months of the year can seem like a hard slog. The thought of facing an endless round of parties, Christmas commitments, and by Peta Teuma continuing to maintain a work/life balance can leave many of us feeling rundown. Here are my top 3 tips to maintaining your health through the silly season:
6
GET ORGANISED We all have friends who seem to thrive on the lastminute dash to their local shopping centre for a mad Christmas Eve shopping frenzy to buy for the whole tribe. For most of us the thought of leaving our shopping to the last minute can cause anxiety. To avoid Christmas shopping impacting on your health, take time to write out a list of everyone you need to buy for and any ideas that you have of what they might like. Don’t forget to set a budget as your wellbeing can also be impacted by a credit card hangover, and no liver detox can help that! As well as being organised with your Christmas shopping, don’t forget to fill any medication scripts; you don’t want to worry about running out while relaxing on holidays, or braving the last-minute Christmas shopping crush at the shops. It’s also a good idea to chat to your Pharmacist about any additional over-the-counter solutions that may help you and the family maintain optimal health during the festive season. As a naturopath I pack a whole toiletry bag full of products because one of the kids is bound to get something. My essentials for a trip away: • Probiotics. They can be great if someone gets an upset stomach, gastro, or for helping support the immune system on a cruise or plane trip. There are plenty of options on the market now that are temperature-stable and suitable for children. • A n immune boost. I love olive leaf as the liquid can be taken by the whole family. It packs a big punch being antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal plus high antioxidant. You can also take these as a tablet if you can’t get on board with the liquid. • A liver detox. Life is all about balance, and a cocktail in the afternoon after a busy day out walking or doing water sports is my kind of balance. The herb milk thistle can help to reduce inflammation in the liver. Take daily while away and support that New Year’s resolution. • An antihistamine. I remember waking up in Fiji with my eldest son having a nice big puffy eye due to coming in contact with an unusual plant and being so grateful I packed antihistamine as they helped reduce the reaction quickly. With a new environment there can be different environmental pollutants and pollens that you may react to; being prepared means you may not need to seek medical advice while away. • Eye and Ear Drops. If you’re planning a lot of water activities have some eye and ear drops on hand. You can purchase ear drops specifically for inflammation associated with swimming, surfing or diving.
• Digestive Solutions. Talk to your Pharmacist about over-the-counter solutions for diarrhoea and indigestion which can be experienced with new foods and disrupted routines. • F inally, don’t forget the skincare. Sunscreen is essential, but we often forget that our lips may need protection too, if spending long periods outdoors. I like to also pack a hydrating mist which comes in handy on planes for rehydrating skin and can be used on skin that’s seen too much sun.
EXERCISE Research consistently shows that exercise helps support our wellbeing, both physically and mentally so get up and get moving. It is important to aim for 30 minutes of exercise 5 days per week. Balancing this during a season of more social commitments can be hard, but it can definitely be done. • Set your alarm 30 minutes earlier. In Summer the mornings can be the best time of the day to exercise, allowing you to avoid the heat and enjoy the sunrise. • Organise to catch up with family or friends for a walk, or pack a picnic and the cricket set and head to the beach. Exercise can be as enjoyable as kicking the ball with the kids or that great Australian tradition of beach cricket. • With longer days take the dog out for a walk after dinner before the sun sets and enjoy some down time from screens. Your eyes and upper body will enjoy the change! Remember your wellbeing will benefit more from the exercise, so if need be, say ‘no’ to other events and prioritise some physical movement.
SLEEP Sleep is the time our bodies repair themselves and reset some important hormones like leptin and ghrelin, which control our appetites. Research shows that after only one night of reduced sleep these hormones are impacted which may cause us to reach for more food for energy. In the long-term this can cause weight gain and invite other health issues. Don’t compromise your sleep for a social engagement if you can avoid it. Aim for between 7-9 hours of sleep each night to help you face the day with lots of energy. Peta Teuma holds a Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy) and truly believes in the power of natural therapies. She lives in Sydney with her husband David, two energic teenage boys and an even more energetic puppy, Axl.

PHARMACIST Sally Lui FOCUS Leichhardt
How long have you been a Pharmacist within the Blooms The Chemist network? I started working at Blooms The Chemist Leichhardt in 1996 as a pharmacy student, and have been a Partner here since 2002. What’s the best thing about your community? Leichhardt residents are absolutely beautiful, the inner west has a real sense of community, and it’s so diverse. Our customers are a mix of young families, professionals, and other families that have lived here for generations. Some of my customers have been coming to me since I started here in 1996; I have Italian and Greek grandmothers who hug me when I see them and ask me about my kids! What do you enjoy most about being a Pharmacist? I love being able to help people; I get so much satisfaction knowing I can make a difference in people’s lives.
8
What would you be doing if you weren’t a Pharmacist? I would travel, and I would love to be a foster parent; since having my own children, I see there’s such a need in the world for foster families. It breaks my heart when I see kids who don’t have that sense of family, love, and belonging. How do you like to relax or spend your free time? Day trips with the family, Latin dancing, playing guitar, and spending time in the garden. What are your favourite places to visit in your local community? Leichhardt is the home of amazing coffee and great restaurants. What are five things you couldn’t live without? My family, God, music (gets me going in the morning on my way to work!), being in nature, and sunshine. Tell us something unexpected about you. I have to listen to music while I’m cooking dinner, and it’s always the same musician (Vance Joy).
Be Sunscreen Savvy SUNSCREEN HAS COME A LONG WAY SINCE WE SLATHERED ON FLUORO ZINC FOR A DAY AT THE BEACH; CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUNSCREEN FOR YOUR NEEDS IS AN IMPORTANT STEP IN ENSURING YOU STAY PROTECTED. AND DON’T FORGET TO REAPPLY EVERY 2 HOURS. SENSITIVE Zinc oxide provides high level UVA & UVB broad spectrum protection (which means no chemical absorbers) whilst a fragrance-free formula reduces the chances of irritation. Ego Sunsense Sensitive Invisible SPF 50+ dries clear, and has a lightweight feel, with an additional moisturising ingredient that helps to maintain the skin’s barrier function.
ACTIVE Go for a more heavy-duty sunscreen that’s sweat and water resistant. The Cancer Council has a wide range of fragrance-free, Australian made options for all skin types and activities.
FACE Premature ageing of the skin can be caused by prolonged and repeated sun exposure. Don’t forget to apply sun protection to your face, even if you’re not planning to be in the sun for very long. Ego Sunsense Daily Face 50+ provides a lightweight, oil-free sheer tint of colour with an invisible matte finish, making it ideal for oily and combination skin types.
AFTERCARE Sunburn is skin trauma. Make sure you manage your sunburn properly; if it’s really serious, see your GP ASAP. For milder sunburn, you can treat it at home. There’s a lot of misinformation out there about how to treat sunburnt skin; don’t have a hot shower (aside from the ouch-factor, you can actually make your sunburn worse by applying heat to it!) and avoid heavy perfumed or oil-based creams which can ‘trap’ the heat beneath the skin. Drink loads of water, take cool baths or showers, and mild pain relievers if you really need to reduce the inflammation and pain. Applying a cooling, soothing aloe vera based gel or cream can also provide some comfort.
ECENT STUDY HAS IDENTIFIED THAT WHILE MOST OF US ARE SLATHERING ON THE SPF50+, STILL AREN’T USING ENOUGH TO EFFECTIVELY PROTECT US FROM DAMAGING UVA/UVB RAYS. THE BENEFITS ARE COMPLETELY MENTAL CONCENTRATE | MEMORISE | FOCUS PINPOINTAUSTRALIA.COM
Pinpoint is a special formulation of a natural extract that can enhance concentration, focus and memory. Even better, it’s also clinically proven to help you to stay calm. We’ve worked together with leading scientists and health experts to develop this allnatural supplement, which really helps you to stay focused in times of stress, or when you really need your brain to perform at its best. It can assist anyone studying or working hard right now, or coming up to exam time; giving your memory and clarity of thought an extra power boost – taking your results to the next level. You could say it’s a high-grade supplement. Pinpoint is made in Australia under strict quality-controlled conditions, and is distributed in Australia and New Zealand by Bod Australia.
WHAT’S SO GOOD ABOUT PINPOINT? Pinpoint’s key ingredient is a specific plant-based extract of Bacopa Monnieri – a natural herb leaf commonly found in Asia, first identified over 2000 years ago and used ever since in Ayurvedic medicine. More recent clinical trials from the last four decades have shown that this extract can improve cognitive processes by enhancing the rate at which the nervous system communicates, promoting both recall and overall concentration.
IS IT RIGHT FOR ME? Pinpoint Bright Brains has been specially created with students in mind – as a supplement to benefit study and exams, and assist with clarity of thought. Think of Pinpoint as your unfair advantage. It can help if you’re studying right now: whether you are at school, university or a research professor. Or if you’re a busy professional tackling a major project at work – any situation where your ability to think clearly, focus and recall information could do with a bit of extra support. And, of course, Pinpoint is completely natural – so it won’t have any of the potential side effects of synthetic products.
INVEST IN YOUR MIND So if you want a natural way to enhance your concentration and memory, pick up a supply of Pinpoint: you’re thinking smarter already. Find out more about Bod Australia at bodaustralia.com.au See pinpointaustralia.com for more information and clinical trial data. Dosage: 2 capsules in the morning with food. Key ingredient: Bacopa Monnieri (BOD68).
STUDYSMART WHETHER YOU’RE PREPPING FOR THE HSC OR GEARING UP FOR UNI FINALS, ORGANISING AN EFFECTIVE STUDY ROUTINE CAN REDUCE THE ANXIETY AND STRESS AROUND EXAM SEASON. ENVIRONMENT Ideally, choose your study environment to amplify your studying practice. If you can, choose a specific location designated just for study; this will ensure you create a habit or pattern and kick your brain into gear when you sit down to revise. A place that is relatively quiet and free from distractions, with a comfortable chair and desk at the right height, will be much more conducive to retaining information.
NOURISH Certain foods have been shown to increase brain health and boost memory. Omega-3 fatty acids contain docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which assists in maintaining optimal neuron function. You can boost your omega-3 fatty acid intake by eating oily fish such as salmon or sardines, chia seeds, walnuts, and flaxseed. The active compound in turmeric (curcumin) has also shown great promise in improving memory and focus.
BOOST There’s a whole slew of new supplements on the market that can assist with boosting brain power and reducing stress. PINPOINT BRIGHT BRAINS uses a specific extract of Bacopa Monnieri (BOD68), also known as ‘Brahmi’. By increasing nerve ending growth rate and improving the communication abilities of the nervous system, this extract has been shown to increase memory, focus, and speed of information processing. Another option is a quick spritz of Brauer Calm Focus Oral Spray under the tongue; Focus Oral Spray contains ingredients including Korean Ginseng and Valerian which have been used in traditional homeopathic medicine to assist with nervous tension and stress.
REJUVENATE It’s important to remember that your mental wellbeing is more important than that test. Make sure you take time to engage with other activities that you enjoy, including socialising, exercise, reading; whatever gives your brain a break and allows you to reset. It’s all about balance, and self-care comes first. Try to incorporate some relaxation techniques into your daily routine; two minutes of mindfulness or meditation is better than none.

What causes allergies and hayfever?
PEOPLE YOUNG AND OLD SUFFER FROM HAYFEVER SYMPTOMS. FOR SOME, THE CONGESTION, SNEEZING AND RUNNY NOSE LAST FOR A FEW DAYS; FOR OTHERS, IT CAN LAST FOR MONTHS. If you’re a sufferer, one way to help reduce your congestion is to remove the allergens that cause the problem in the first place. FESS Saline Nasal Spray and FESS Nasal and Sinus Wash are non-medicated and a natural way to help relieve nasal and sinus congestion. When used prior to a medicated allergy and hayfever spray, these FESS products help improve the penetration of the medication.
14
There are many triggers for allergies and hayfever – common ones include pollens, dust mites, animal dander and moulds. Whatever your trigger, these tiny particles can enter your nose and cause an allergic reaction.
How does FESS help to relieve nasal and sinus congestion from hayfever and allergies? FESS helps to wash away dust, pollen and other allergens that can cause the congestion. Clearing mucus from your nasal passages before using a medicated allergy spray can also improve the effectiveness of the spray.
FESS helps to stimulate normal ‘mucocillary flow’ – the nose’s natural defence mechanism – by thinning the nasal mucus so that it flows more easily. The tiny hairs inside your nasal passages, combined with mucus, work to prevent dust, pollen, bacteria and other pollutants from reaching your lungs.
USING FESS DAILY CAN HELP KEEP THIS SYSTEM IN OPTIMUM CONDITION Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist consult your healthcare professional.
CHOLESTEROL OVERVIEW
Cholesterol is a type of fat that is found in every cell in our body and helps them function properly. There are two types of cholesterol; HDL ‘good’ cholesterol and LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol. High cholesterol levels can be genetic or can be caused by the foods that you eat. Eating foods rich in saturated fats will increase the amount of LDL cholesterol in the blood, which is then deposited within the walls of arteries, making it difficult for blood to flow through. This build-up in the walls of the arteries puts a person at significant risk of heart disease and stroke. Abnormally high cholesterol levels may not give you any symptoms, so a blood test is the best way to check how much cholesterol and other lipids your blood contains. This test is a ‘total cholesterol test’, to provide an indication of ‘total cholesterol’.
Ways to manage high cholesterol: GET TO KNOW THE BEST FOODS FOR YOUR BODY Understanding the different types of fats found in food can help you make small adjustments to your diet, without compromising flavour and taste. Sadly, lots of our favourite foods contain saturated fats (for example meat and dairy products), as well as cocoa butter, coconut oil, and palm oil. Trans fats are often found in fried food, sweets, and desserts; trans fats can also raise your LDL cholesterol levels. Foods that contain unsaturated fats may help to increase your ‘good’ cholesterol. Try incorporating more avocados, walnuts, almonds, and oily fish into your diet.
CUT DOWN ON ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTES Drinking in moderation and quitting smoking can make a huge difference to your general health and wellbeing. Smoking can increase the detrimental affect LDL cholesterol has on the body by inhibiting the blood’s ability to oxygenate tissues and cells. GET MOVING Increase your physical activity; even your incidental exercise can have a positive impact. Take the stairs, stand (not sit) if possible, go for a walk during lunch, or get into the garden for an afternoon. Little changes can add up. You can get a quick snapshot of your total cholesterol at your local Blooms The Chemist in under 5 minutes with our Cholesterol Screening Health Check*. To gain a full breakdown of your HDL, LDL and Triglycerides levels, it’s advisable to visit your GP. * The provision of points for the Health Checks is subject to such Health Checks being necessary for the customer’s legitimate clinical needs and/or the provision of legitimate therapeutic benefits for the customer. Sleep tight by Nellie Kavanagh
WELCOMING A NEW BABY INTO YOUR HOME AND LIFE, WHETHER IT IS YOUR FIRST, OR YOUR FOURTH, IS ALWAYS A TIME OF LEARNING. EVERY BABY IS DIFFERENT AND WHAT WORKED FOR YOUR MUM, YOUR FRIEND, OR YOUR OLDER CHILD MAY NOT WORK FOR YOUR NEW BABY. TAKE TIME TO GET TO KNOW YOUR BABY AND WHAT THEY LIKE AND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
The newborn stage is a time of great joy, but also incredible stress, self-doubt and of course exhaustion. While sleep is an innate need, what surprises most new parents is that babies are not born knowing how to settle themselves to sleep: they need your help. The following are some practical tips to help you through those early months with your newborn...
Swaddle
Night time is for sleeping
Swaddle, swaddle, swaddle! Swaddling is said to replicate the cosy feeling of being in the womb and is a fantastic way to calm an unsettled baby, help them go to sleep easier, and for longer.
When it comes to overnight feeds, keep the lights dim and interaction with your bubby to a minimum. You want them to get the message that night time is for sleeping, not for playing with mama. You also want them to take a good, big feed so they don’t wake soon after looking for another feed. Try feeding them until they are calm, then change their nappy to wake them up and put them back on the breast/bottle for another good feed before placing them back in the cot. Try not to engage too much and avoid television or phones which may lead to overstimulation- the enemy of baby sleep! If you have a long feeder and need something to keep you awake, try a e-reader or audiobook.
I prefer to use a firm, arms-down swaddle. A muslin wrap will work perfectly once you get some practice. If you have a Houdini-baby, try a fitted swaddle like the Miracle Blanket or SwaddleMe. The swaddle should be firm, but allow enough room for the baby’s chest to expand and breathe. The zip-up swaddles that allow babies arms to lay above their heads, do not adequately suppress the moro or startle reflex for many babies. If however, you are using one without any issue then of course keep using it! But if your baby is waking soon after being laid in the bassinet, or continually wakes after 45 minutes, this could be why.
Limit wake times Newborns develop their daily biological rhythm within the first few months, but in the beginning their sleep is disorganised. I recommend my clients immediately throw out any book telling them to follow a strict schedule. This can make you anxious and feel like a failure when your baby cannot stay awake for 2 hours, or sleep for 2 hours. Take the pressure off, enjoy your baby, and focus on feeding and bonding with your little one. Don’t be too regimented about it, but keep an eye on the time your baby wakes and use the following to guide you as to when they should go back to sleep. The goal is for your baby to be asleep, not just in bed, by the end of the following wake times. 1 - 3 weeks: Baby should really only be waking for a feed, nappy change and quick cuddle before being settled back to sleep. Limit their wake time to 40-60 minutes. 4 - 6 weeks: 60-90 minutes 7-12 weeks: 90 minutes, give or take 15 minutes.
White Noise Studies have shown that while in utero, babies are surrounded by sounds like mum’s blood whooshing around that can be as loud as a vacuum cleaner. Silence is very strange for babies so thankfully we can use white noise to make them feel more at home. Use an app or machine that doesn’t shut off after 40 minutes; white noise should be used for the duration of all naps and night-time sleep. It has the added bonus of drowning out street and household noises which may wake your baby.
Do what works In the very beginning, getting sleep, however it happens, is what is most important. Feed, rock, jiggle, walk, even drive that baby to sleep if you must, just do what you can to avoid an overtired baby. When a baby is overtired, they become incredibly unsettled, they take much longer to settle to sleep, and don’t sleep for as long. After a few weeks, you can start to teach the foundations of independent sleep. Focus on trying to put your baby down drowsy but awake at least once a day. If they become very unsettled, then pick them up and calm them, and try again tomorrow. Babies tend to self-settle a little easier at bedtime and for their first nap of the day, so these are good times to try.
What if they don’t stop screaming?!? If you get busy, completely overshoot the wake time, or you can’t stop them crying, take your baby to a dark room, turn on white noise that is louder than their crying so that they can hear it (a shushing sound is best for upset babies and you can turn it down as they become calm), swaddle them, and give them a dummy or an upturned finger to suck on. Some babies will calm down after being placed on their tummy or side for a brief period, but ALWAYS RETURN THEM TO THEIR BACK TO SLEEP to reduce the risk of SIDS. If your baby is particularly unsettled, crying for several hours per day, seems to find feeding difficult or painful, or is not gaining weight then consult your GP or paediatrician.

*Harris Interactive Teething Survey 2017. Nurofen for Children oral liquid is for the temporary relief of pain and fever. Always read the label. Use only as directed. Incorrect use could be harmful. Consult your healthcare professional if symptoms persist.
FLASH YOUR FEET THE SUN’S OUT, DAYS ARE GETTING LONGER, AND WE’VE SWAPPED OUR UGG BOOTS AND SLIPPERS FOR SANDALS AND BARE FEET.
For some, flashing your feet in the warmer months can be a bit anxiety inducing; months of socks and cold temps can leave your skin dry, cracked, and painful. Start prepping your feet for sandal-wearing weather with products from Scholl.
EXFOLIATE Don’t neglect your feet in your exfoliating regime; use the Scholl Velvet Smooth Express Pedi to gently remove coarse, hardened skin, paying particular attention to the heels. It’s battery-operated and super easy to use, leaving your feet smoother after just one use. Another option is the Scholl Hard Skin Foot File, which first removes hardened skin then smooths the area for better absorption of moisturiser treatments.
TREAT For rough, cracked heels, use a heel balm like Scholl Eulactol Gold Heel Balm. This little beauty contains tocopherol (vitamin E), paraffin to trap moisture, and urea, which works to exfoliate and and soften the skin. Use twice a day on clean, dry skin.
TIP • Exfoliating regularly can discourage hard skin building up. • Wearing properly supportive shoes that provide extra comfort at the heel may help to reduce cracked or hardened heels. • Apply a thick layer of heel balm to the feet before popping on a pair of cotton socks. Leave on overnight for an extra moisture boost.

unsmoke the smart way PATCH AND GUM TOGETHER GIVES A
75% INCREASED CHANCE OF QUITTING*
20
Most smokers know that they’d be better off being smoke-free. Apart from health and financial drawbacks, there is also the increasing social stigma to contend with. However quitting smoking can be a difficult process, which is often a journey of attempts rather than a moment in time. ‘Unsmoke’ is all about undoing the addiction to smoking, to live free of cigarettes. Whether you unsmoke for your children, your partner or for yourselves – whatever the reason, you can unsmoke with Nicotinell! The smart way to unsmoke is with new Nicotinell Combination Therapy, a newly launched pack that contains patch and gum together, which when used in combination gives a 75% increased chance of quitting vs patch alone (Stead 2012). Nicotinell patch provides a steady dose of nicotine to help stave off the need for a cigarette. However for moments when the cravings are too strong, adding gum provides that additional defence to stay on course.

UNSMOKE WITH 7 TIPS 1 Write down all the reasons that have made you decide to quit smoking, and carry them with you in case you need reminding. 2 Set a date to quit and stick to it. Make it sooner rather than later. 3 Get as much support as you can from family, friends, and work colleagues. Let them know you are planning to quit, and ask smokers not to smoke around you. 4 Plan ahead for situations in which you are likely to be tempted to smoke, such as parties, drinking or going out for coffee. Try to avoid these situations in the early stages of your quitting programme. 5 Throw out all cigarettes, ashtrays and lighters and anything else that might remind you of smoking. Wash your clothes and clean your car to remove the smell of smoke. 6 If you find you are losing motivation to quit, remind yourself of the many medical and financial benefits of quitting. 7 Celebrate your wins, and if you do have a cigarette don’t see it as a failure.

BREAKING DOWN
BARRIERS 22
AUSTRALIAN MEN EXPERIENCE HIGHER RATES OF CHRONIC DISEASE IN COMPARISON TO WOMEN AND ARE LESS LIKELY TO SEEK OUT AND ENGAGE WITH A VARIETY OF HEALTHFOCUSED PROGRAMS (DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND AGEING, 2010). However, evidence suggests that addressing gender-specific challenges and tailoring the approach can encourage greater participation with health services programs. Active Breed is a new health program developed in partnership with Western Sydney University (WSU), the Canterbury Bulldogs, and SouthWestern Sydney Primary Health Network. Under the James Markos Community Service Program, Blooms The Chemist is proud to support Active Breed and other community health initiatives. James Markos (1982-2017) was a Pharmacist and owner at the Blooms The Chemist Padstow; his three loves in life were Family, Pharmacy, and the Bulldogs. The JMCSP was initiated by in honour of James by Blooms The Chemist Padstow, Burwood, Bankstown, Miller, and Marrickville stores. Active Breed is the first program of its kind to be implemented in South-Western Sydney, with an NRL club (CanterburyBankstown Bulldogs) as its key partner. It’s also a randomised controlled trial study, with immediate and longer-term results to be evaluated to refine and improve the program and identify ways in which sport and community can impact health outcomes. Dr Emma George of WSU is excited to be leading the Active Breed program and defining new approaches to men’s health.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND ACTIVE BREED? I’ve been a footy fan my whole life, and as someone who enjoys the social and mental wellbeing aspect of sport, I was keen to explore ways in which we can address potential barriers to health and wellbeing through sport. I’m also passionate about men’s health, having lost my Dad to cancer ten years ago. Over the course of 12 weeks, our Active Breed members engage in weekly 90-minute exercise and education sessions, geared to cover a variety of health topics, including physical activity, mental health, violence prevention, and healthy eating. The program encourages small, sustainable changes to health and lifestyle behaviours to increase the likelihood of long-term success. It was important that this pilot program deliver some measurable results; so often community health initiatives are commenced with no action plan of measuring the success. We’re collecting valuable data on a range of outcomes to better understand how we can implement sustainable programs to improve the health and wellbeing of the community. HOW DID YOU SELECT YOUR FIRST ACTIVE BREED MEMBERS? Our first group started the program in May; we invited expressions of interest through social media and the Bulldogs’ membership email database. We went through a selection process where the interested men gave us some key health information (age, weight, height, BMI) and completed a preexercise screening assessment with an exercise physiologist. We collected baseline data on demographics (e.g., marital status, location of residence, ethnic background), as well as current physical activity levels, dietary intake, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, level of social support, and current attitudes and understanding of health.
This is a rigorous research study, a randomised controlled trial, which will help us understand if there are any differences in health outcomes in comparison to a wait-list control group who participate in the program from September. At the end of 12 weeks, we compare baseline and end of program data, and check in again another 12 weeks later to determine if the program has created long term changes for participants. We’ll also invite partners and kids in for a focus group, to see if the program has changed how they approach health, family, life, and communication.
DO YOU FEEL IT’S MADE A DIFFERENCE PARTNERING WITH THE BULLDOGS TO FACILITATE THE PROGRAM? Absolutely! Before they even got started, these guys already had something in common, which is their passion for footy. Doing cardio training on the hallowed turf of Belmore Sports Ground (the Bulldogs’ spiritual home ground) where all the Bulldogs legends have played adds something special to the program. We’ve had a lot of support from club legends including Terry Lamb and Hazem El Masri who joined the group for a game of touch footy. That is an experience that very few people will ever have, and something the men will never forget. Based on research that we’ve done, we know having that social support is really important. Having other men in that similar life stage, with common interests and experiences has provided a more solid support base for our members through their 12-week journey, and we hope that the results will reflect that. Plus, they all enjoy a bit of friendly competition which spurs them on to continue working hard and achieving their goals!
ARE THERE SPECIFIC BARRIERS FOR MEN TO ACCESS HEALTH PROGRAMS? It differs by culture, age group and even socioeconomic status. As a society we’re slowly starting to break down those barriers and seeing greater social change. It’s important to acknowledge there still exists some negative stereotyping around asking for help and talking about physical and mental health problems. Through ongoing education and by encouraging men to start a conversation about ‘uncomfortable’ issues like preventative health screening and depression, we can keep breaking down those stigmas, especially around mental health and the importance of taking care of yourself. That’s why programs that provide access to health services and information, specifically designed to engage men, are so important.
23
HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF THE ACTIVE BREED PROGRAM? We’ll be recruiting our next group of participants for the 2019 program soon, and our first group of men are really keen to return as ambassadors and mentors for future participants. We would love to see this become a sustainable community program that addresses potential barriers to health service access and encourages a fresh perspective on health and wellbeing. If successful, we may also look to roll out a similar program for other key population groups including women and younger men. We’re looking forward to sharing the results from our pilot very soon. Complicating your diet/lifestyle will just cause frustration. Routine: the secret of success is found in your daily routine. Change something you do daily and change your outlook. Get in the Goldilocks zone: not too little, not too much. Find that balance between moving, exercising, eating, health, energy, and confidence. – Fran M, Fitness Instructor & Personal Trainer The best thing you can do for your health is to eat the foods that are appropriate for you, taking into consideration any conditions or allergies. Regular exercise is crucial, whether that’s swimming, brisk walking, or resistance training which is very good for your bones. You also need to look after your mental health which impacts your overall wellbeing. Identify what works for you- reading, walking, talking to a counsellor or doctor, spending time with family; whatever makes you feel grounded and the best version of you. – Elise EB, Pharmacist Although you might be starving when you sit down to eat, try and avoid the buttery, oily bread starters. Research has shown that people who consumed a protein-based appetiser like prawn cocktails or olives rather than a slab of sourdough consumed 16% fewer calories in their entrees and mains then those who scoffed the lot. – Adam MacDougall, former professional rugby league footballer and founder of The Man Shake

Noah’s Wish WE KNOW THAT MAKE-A-WISH WISH JOURNEYS HAVE THE POWER TO GRANT A SICK KID STRENGTH, MOTIVATION, AND COURAGE IN THE FACE OF THEIR ILLNESS. FOR KATRINA, RETAIL MANAGER OF BLOOMS THE CHEMIST GOULBURN, HER SON’S WISH JOURNEY IS AN EXPERIENCE THE ENTIRE FAMILY WILL NEVER FORGET. In February 2014 my son Noah, at eight years of age, was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma, the fastest growing human tumour. Within 3 weeks he’d gone from having a temperature to his stomach swelling to the size of a football. He was desperately ill. If he was to have any chance of survival, we were told he’d have to undergo an aggressive form of chemotherapy. Doctors advised that the chemotherapy could in fact be what ended Noah’s life. As they prepared us for ICU, Kidney Dialysis and Life Support we knew Noah was in for the fight of his life. It was an extremely confronting and challenging time for our family.
26
Noah has two younger brothers; Hamish, who was six at the time, and Riley, who was four. We live in Goulburn, which meant over two hours’ drive to Westmead children’s hospital. Thanks to the amazing support from our family and friends both my husband and I were able to stay with Noah through the most critical phase. It was heart-wrenching to have to separate our boys during a time when we weren’t sure of the outcome. Riley has Down Syndrome, so we had to consider the best way to handle this situation. After 7 months in a Children’s Oncology Ward, we were told that Noah’s wish would be granted, and we knew it was going to be an unforgettable experience. One of the great things that Make-A-Wish does when granting a wish is involve the whole family. The inclusion of Hamish and Riley was so important in making this day special, as they also were greatly impacted by Noah’s illness After a lot of thought and family discussion, and with the help from the wonderful ladies from our local MAW team, Noah decided he wanted a motorbike what eight-year-old boy wouldn’t?!
In March 2015 Noah’s wish was granted. He absolutely had no idea it was happening; we’d told him we were going to Wakefield Park to see the bikes, and that we were picking up some furniture on the way home, hence why we had the trailer on the back of the car. Dave McKenna (Australian Stunt Bike Champion) started the day with an impressive bike display and Noah was shaking with excitement just watching the show. At the end of the show it was announced that the new Yamaha that Dave had next to him was actually for Noah as part of his wish; Noah was speechless. It took him a moment to process that yes, that was his very own motorbike! Noah spent the entire next day riding his new bike, with all the gear and extras, including a Go Pro, until it was too dark to stay outside! Noah will be four years in remission in September 2018. He turned thirteen in May. Every birthday and Christmas we always take some time to reflect on how very lucky we are that he is here to celebrate these days with us. Some of the friends he made during treatment are no longer with us, and their families can’t celebrate those milestones. He’s in High School now, with an amazing group of friends. He is healthy, happy, and very aware of how lucky he is. I just wanted to thank each and every person that donates to Make-A-Wish Australia. You really are helping to make a difference to families with very sick children. The memories that Make-A-Wish create are something to be treasured, especially for those families not as fortunate as ours, who lose their loved one. To be able to reflect on such a happy and magical day is something that will stay with them for a lifetime.

HOW TO AVOID
HOLIDAY
BURNOUT
28
by Rachel Hodgens
IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR. SO WHY IS IT THAT SO MANY OF US WIND UP FEELING OVERWHELMED AND STRESSED EVERY YEAR IN THE LEAD UP TO CHRISTMAS? It’s time to take on a new mindset when it comes to the ‘holiday madness’. A mindset that allows you to appreciate this magical time of year, rather than fill you with dread, frustration and a longing for the New Year to roll around.
Avoiding Holiday burnout is as easy as these five steps: 01 PREPARE
04 FOCUS ON JOY AND LOVE
The key to success is in the planning. On the most practical level, preparation will help you remain organised. For complete ease of mind, it’s handy to begin ‘planning’ at the beginning of November. By forming a plan and nutting out the general ‘to-do’ list early, you won’t find any of the important things sneaking up on you. Try mapping out a time frame of when you aim to have each item on the list sorted.
Though Christmas is a time of joy and generosity, it can sometimes feel overwhelming and draining. It’s easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays; you might find yourself feeling resentful, frustrated, or under-appreciated. It’s in these moments that it’s important to catch yourself and return your attention back to what matters most: love.
As always, the more you prepare, the less weight you’ll be carrying on your shoulders closer to the big day.
02 DON’T OVER-COMMIT One of the biggest traps people fall into during the festive season is over-committing themselves. Christmas is one of the most social times of the year. From work parties to family gatherings, friends dropping by, to travelling to the in-laws – it’s little wonder stress and anxiety can begin to set in. Though it may feel uncomfortable at first, learning to say no can be incredibly important to your wellbeing during the holidays. Understanding your main priorities (be it a certain social function, planning Christmas lunch, hosting family members, etc.) allows you to acknowledge anything else that pops up for what it is – an additional commitment and not essential. Once you switch from the mindset of ‘do-it-all’, it becomes far easier to free your conscience and focus your energy on what’s most important to you this Christmas. Unsure of whether something is ‘right’ for you to say yes to? Check in with your gut. If you find yourself shrinking or with a knot in your belly it’s a fair indication that it’s going to cause more stress than it’s worth.
03 RESIST GUILT The hardest part about saying ‘no’ is that we can feel riddled with guilt afterward. It’s easy to beat yourself up when you are used to people-pleasing. When you learn how to say no with love and kindness, you give yourself permission to simplify and enjoy life without unnecessary stresses and distractions. This is particularly poignant during the festive season as we face pressures to live up to the expectations of family, significant other, friends and even ourselves. It’s not realistic to live up to everybody’s expectations at once, so give yourself the freedom to let go of the idea of trying to please everyone. Your festivities will be all the more joyous and you can go back to focusing your energy on the things you want to enjoy.
Love is at the core of every one of us and it’s where we sit most comfortably. Bringing yourself back to this truth whenever you begin to spiral into negativity is a fast-track way to living a happier life, not least at Christmas-time! Choose not to dwell on the negatives (eg. the way things didn’t work out as expected, how somebody isn’t listening to you or how you don’t have time to get everything you wish done). Instead, focus your energy on the love and joy you have at your fingertips; your loved ones, great friends, beautiful weather, a delicious meal. There is so much that enriches your life and Christmas is the perfect time to look around and appreciate it all.
05 BE REALISTIC Finally, set realistic expectations on what your festive season is going to look like. You might have a perfect image in your head but the truth is reality never looks exactly as we had planned. Expectations are a sure-fire way of killing the joy this Christmas. When you dream up an unrealistic vision of the way you wish things to work out, life will always fall a little short of your desires. This can lead to feelings of disappointment, frustration, resentment and more. Not only does this impact your enjoyment of the holiday season, it’s easy to find yourself pushing against a brick wall, fighting to make something work that was never meant to happen. Stress and exhaustion set in and in no time at all, you’re running on empty. You can minimise the stress early on by setting yourself a realistic vision and not overcommitting to too many things. Furthermore, allow yourself to let go of things you can’t control as they arise. Life happens and sometimes the greatest feelings of joy and contentment comes from living in the moment and savoring each moment as it happens. The festive season is a time when everyone is a little kinder and a littler merrier to one another. We just need to learn to turn that love and kindness inward as well. By incorporating these simple changes in mindset, we can beat the holiday burn out which has often hit by the time Boxing Day ticks over and genuinely enjoy each moment during this special time of year.

Raised cholesterol levels can cause cholesterol to be deposited within the walls of arteries, making it difficult for blood to flow through. You can get a quick snapshot of your total cholesterol at your local Blooms The Chemist in under 5 minutes. To gain a full breakdown of your HDL, LDL and Triglycerides levels, it’s advisable to visit your GP.
