JOINT HEALTH Medical professionals differentiate between chronic joint pain due to wear or attrition and, acute pain due to injury. Whatever the source, managing joint pain properly facilitates recovery, prevents additional health complications and improves the overall quality of life.

Pharmacist Paul Sharman Coogee
How long have you been a pharmacist for Blooms The Chemist? Pharmacist Partner since 2nd October 1998. Coogee was the 10th Blooms store in the group. What do you love most about your local area? Coogee has a village atmosphere, tight knit community with a relaxed approach to living… and proximity to the beach. We are a major sponsor of Coogee Surf Life Saving Club! What do you do outside of work for fun? What’s work? If work is fun, then it never becomes dull… but when I’m at home aside from time with my family, fun is playing guitar or listening to music, cultivating the vegetable garden, reading a good book or watching Liverpool play #YNWA
where the rewards lie. Not everyone has an opportunity in life to contribute like that. I feel blessed that I can. How do you like your coffee? (In a cup) Double Shot Piccolo. What is the last book you read? The Silk Roads: A New History of the World by Peter Frankopan. Favourite place to travel to? Am not widely travelled, but New York seems to have so much humanity to explore aside from the obvious in a city that never sleeps. What does a typical day look like for you? Aside from an early morning trip to the gym to keep my body and mind fit and healthy, there is no such thing as a typical day in pharmacy: and that is part of the attraction!
What do you enjoy most about being a Pharmacist? No two days are the same. If you can make someone feel better about themselves, especially if they are unwell then that’s

HEALTH CHECK CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE “Andrew Biady, Blooms The Chemist Pharmacist answers a few top questions.”
Do you know somebody who has suffered a heart attack or stroke? Do you know cardiovascular disease kills an Australian every 12 minutes? While it’s not always fatal, watching a loved one recover from stroke or a heart attack can be extraordinarily tough. The good news is, it’s largely preventable. Blooms the Chemist is dedicated to identifying risk factors early so you can prevent it happening. I’m told I need to watch my blood pressure... Why? Blood pressure isn’t necessarily a bad thing! We need blood pressure to move blood around the body – but if the pressure
HEALTH CHECK MAGAZINE ISSUE 1 - JAN 2017.indd 7
7 is too high or low it can cause problems. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke, heart disease, and heart failure. The ‘ideal’ pressure is 120/80 mmHg. Do you know your current pressure? Ask your pharmacist to check in-store today – it might save your life! And what’s this I hear about cholesterol? A high cholesterol level in your blood is one of the other major risk factors for stroke and heart attack.
How offen should I have my cholesterol checked? The tricky part is, there are no symptoms of a high cholesterol level. Sometimes, it can even be inherited from your parents. If too much cholesterol builds up in your blood, plaques can form inside your arteries, blocking blood flow to your brain or heart. At Blooms the Chemist we can provide a quick and easy blood test on the spot to help identify whether this might be a concern for you. It may prevent you having a stroke!
What is a stroke? A stroke occurs when blood supply to the brain is cut off, and can lead to permanent brain damage. At Blooms the Chemist, our pharmacists know the importance of warning signs such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, but we go one step further -ask your pharmacist for a stroke risk assessment and we will take care of the rest. TRYING TO GET IN SHAPE IN THE NEW YEAR? 3 reasons why your weight can benefit from whey protein. If you’re trying to lose weight, including some pure, grass-fed whey protein with your meals is a smart move.
8
Just as vitamins and minerals are essential to maintaining a healthy body and mind, so too are amino acids, the building blocks of protein. When it comes to benefits for health, whey protein is superior when compared to other protein sources, due to the impressive blend of amino acids it provides. The human body has the ability to create certain amino acids, while others are considered “essential”. Essential amino acids are those that must be consumed through the diet due to our inability to manufacture them. What makes whey protein so beneficial is its high levels of these essential amino acids that are fundamental to numerous aspects of health.
HEALTH CHECK MAGAZINE ISSUE 1 - JAN 2017.indd 8
Here are 3 great reasons why whey protein is a useful addition to the diet: 1. Building and maintaining lean muscle mass Whey protein is rich in the branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), which are essential to building muscle. Whether fat loss, muscle maintenance, better recovery or muscle gains are your aim, whey protein is the perfect, easily absorbed form of protein for ensuring your body has what it needs to re-build healthy, strong muscles.

2. Weight loss and maintenance By supporting a higher percentage of lean muscle mass, whey protein can help to boost metabolism. This, in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise, may benefit weight loss. 3. It assists general wellbeing The recognised benefits of the amino acids found in whey protein should by no means be limited to muscle health. Amino acids are key building blocks for a magnitude of chemicals essential to the healthy functioning of our bodies.
Speak to your healthcare practitioner for more information about a healthy diet and supplementation.
