WHAT ARE COLD SORES?

Cold sores are triggered by a virus, called the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1). This virus is spread by contact, such as kissing, sharing utensils, drinking glasses and lip products that have been used by someone carrying the virus. Unfortunately, once you have it, you’re stuck with it – at this stage there is no cure, but there are ways to manage it.

HOW CAN I SPEED UP THE HEALING PROCESS?

There are a range of products that can hasten healing:

2- HEALING PATCHES

Patches can help stop the spread of infection, providing a sterile environment to allow the skin to heal, reducing redness and swelling.

One of the most common triggers is exposure to sunlight and wind – make sure you apply a good quality sunscreen designed for the face, and lip balm that contains SPF.

1- ANTI-VIRAL CREAMS These creams penetrate the skin and prevent the virus from being able to replicate, reducing the size of the blister and allowing it to heal.

Stress is another common cause; it may help to consider relaxation techniques such as meditation and breathing exercises.

3- PHARMACIST-ONLY MEDICATIONS *Always read the label. Use only as directed. Incorrect use could be harmful. Consult your Health Care Professional if symptoms persist.

HOW CAN I MINIMISE THE CHANCE OF AN OUTBREAK RECURRING?

More effective treatments do exist - ask your pharmacist for other available options beyond using the above methods.

If you want to try a supplement, Lysine tablets have shown benefit in some studies by reducing the frequency of coldsore breakouts, however some study results have been mixed; chat to your pharmacist or GP for more information.

HAYFEVER RUNNING NOSE, UNCONTROLLABLE SNEEZING, ITCHY WATERY EYES… HAYFEVER OFTEN HITS US AT THE WORST TIMES AND CAN BE INCREDIBLY DEBILITATING IF LEFT UNTREATED. READ ON FOR MORE INFORMATION ON CONTROLLING THIS COMMON CONDITION.

W

HAT CAUSES HAYFEVER?

Your body is constantly on the lookout for things it might consider a threat. When it finds a ‘threat’, your body mounts an allergic response to try and get rid of it, which can result in these unpleasant symptoms. Pollen in the air, dust mites, changes in temperature and animal hair are very common triggers for hayfever.

NASAL SPRAYS Flushing your nose out with salt water (saline) can help remove the allergy provoking substances, and keep your airways clear. Because it’s nonmedicated, you can use this every day without fear of side effects.

ANTIHISTAMINES The main chemical that triggers the allergic reaction is the release of ‘Histamine’, when your body encounters an allergy provoking substance. By taking an antihistamine medication, you can prevent that histamine being released, and stop the symptoms in their tracks.

Other options for treatment include corticosteroid nasal sprays, or decongestant sprays. These are a more powerful treatment option, and can be combined with an antihistamine tablet.

*Always read the label. Use only as directed. Incorrect use could be harmful. Consult your Health Care Professional if symptoms persist.

LIFESTYLE ADVICE Pollen – Close your windows during Spring, and try to avoid hanging laundry outside where it may gather pollen dust. Dust Mites – Run your sheets and pillowcases through a hot wash (over 50 degrees C), and vacuum your carpets regularly.

A lot of us are making the move to ‘green’, with parents keen to adopt this lifestyle change when it comes to looking after Baby. Check out some of our favourite natural and organic babycare products. Life-Space Probiotic Powder for Baby*

Bellamy’s Organic Formulas

Probiotic supplements have become increasingly popular for adults and kids; Life-Space Probiotic Powder for Baby is intended to aid in developing friendly gastrointestinal bacteria to support the development of a healthy immune system, digestion and absorption of nutrients, and reducing the risk of developing eczema before the age of 2. As always, talk to your family GP before starting your child on any supplements.

If you’ve made the decision to use formula0, you may want to consider an organic option. Bellamy’s Organic Infant Formula is made with certified organic whey protein (making it easier for Baby to digest), organic cow’s milk, essential fatty acids and added iron, vitamins and minerals. Made in Australia, NASAA Certified Organic, and housed in a BPA-free tin, Bellamy’s has three formula options, ranging from infant through to toddler.

Gaia Skin Naturals

Pure Papaya Ointment

This beautiful Australian organic skincare range was born from mum Michelle Vogrinec’s frustration in trying to find effective skin products to treat her eightweek-old son’s eczema. The GAIA Natural Baby body washes and shampoos are soap and sulphate free, meaning they won’t dry out the skin, and formulated with organic ingredients such as avocado oil, oat extract, shea butter, calendula and chamomile. Our top picks include the Sleeptime Bath, Baby Moisturiser and Baby Massage Oil.

Just how pure is your papaya? Paw Paw and Papaya ointment is one of the most commonly purchased beauty products; nearly everyone has a tube in their bathroom cabinet or handbag. However, the majority of ointments often contain petrochemicals and other hidden ingredients that inhibit the skin’s ability to breathe! Pure PapayaCare’s Papaya Ointment is 100% natural in origin, created with organic fermented papaya, calendula flower to soothe and a blend of natural moisturisers to keep the skin hydrated. Safe to use on dry, cracked and irritated skin (making it perfect to use for nappy rash, minor burns and cuts, nipple care and helping to maintain skin elasticity).

HOW WE CAN BE MORE AWARE OF THE RISKS AND SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES. 8

2

IN AUSTRALIA, APPROXIMATELY

MILLION

OF US ARE DIABETICS, WITH A FURTHER 700,000 UNDIAGNOSED. Diabetes is a chronic health condition where the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to control blood glucose (sugar) levels (BGLs). Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps glucose enter cells after we consume food (cells require glucose for energy). Glucose levels, if high, can be controlled through diet and exercise, oral medications; if glucose levels are uncontrolled, this is when insulin may be required.

RISK FACTORS: • Overweight or obese: If you are carrying extra weight, then insulin cannot do its job properly. Weight loss will result in lowering of BGLs, blood fats and blood pressure which all help to reduce your risk of heart disease. •

Alcohol: Drinking the recommended amounts (one standard drink for women and two standard drinks for men, with two alcohol free days a week) may have health benefits but overdoing the alcohol has the opposite effect. Check the size of your glass. Many glasses hold two standard drinks, so you may need to change the size of your glass.

Inactive: If you are inactive, try to incorporate some light activity into your week; activity helps to control weight, blood glucose levels, blood pressure and reduce cholesterol.

Family history: If you have a first degree relative with Type 2 diabetes, then you are at greater risk of developing diabetes.

DIET: A diet that includes the following can help to control blood glucose and keeping cholesterol within normal limits. •

Smoking is also a risk factor for diabetes. Ask your GP, Pharmacist, or phone QuitLine for assistance on how to cease smoking. SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES CAN INCLUDE; • Poor wound healing •

Excessive thirst and urination

Increased appetite

Rapid weight gain

Lethargy or tiredness

Blurred vision

EARLY DETECTION AND PREVENTION Having yearly blood tests can help to prevent diabetes. Tests should be considered if you are overweight, sedentary, an older adult, have not seen a GP for years or feel you have any of the above symptoms. Tests generally include: •

Blood glucose levels

Blood fats (cholesterol & triglycerides)

Blood pressure

Eye and feet examinations yearly.

However none of these tests are diagnostic of diabetes; further testing will be required if your GP is concerned with any of your test results.

Low Glycaemic Index foods. This simply means that low GI carbohydrates are broken down and that the sugars are released slowly, making you feel fuller for longer. Look for the Low GI label on food products when you are shopping. Low GI foods also include grainy breads, cereals and crackers. Try to limit processed foods such as white breads, cakes and biscuits. Add more salad or vegetables to your meals. High fibre meals are more satisfying, and have a benefit in helping to reduce cholesterol levels. Snack on fruits, yoghurt, nuts, seeds, crackers and low fat dairy (cheese), fruit loaf, raw carrot and low fat dip such as hummus. Lean proteins, such as skinless chicken and lean red meats, are small in portion. Include more fish in your diet. Add legumes, lentils and chickpeas, which are great sources of protein and fibre.

Small portioned snacks or meals across the day is also a very effective way to control blood glucose levels.

Managing your blood glucose levels helps to reduce the risk of health complications such as nerve damage to your eyes, kidneys and outer extremities such as toes and feet. Lifestyle changes can have a beneficial impact on diabetes long term. A healthy diet and regular exercise helps to control risk factors for diabetes which is mostly related to weight maintenance. Additional benefits include increased confidence, self-esteem and promotes good mental health.

ARE GENERIC BRANDS OF MEDICINE JUST AS GOOD AS THE ORIGINAL IT’S A FAMILIAR SCENARIO – YOU DROP OFF YOUR PRESCRIPTION AND THE PHARMACIST ASKS IF YOU WOULD LIKE A ‘GENERIC’ BRAND OF THE MEDICINE. WHAT DOES THAT REALLY MEAN? SHOULD YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OFFER? OUR IN-HOUSE PHARMACIST, ANDREW, HAS PUT TOGETHER A Q&A TO HELP YOU DECIDE!

WHAT IS A GENERIC MEDICINE? A generic medicine is, in simple terms, the same medicine made by a different company. Generic medicines contain the same active ingredient, in the same dose, and have the same effect on the body as the brand name drug.

HOW CAN I BE SURE THE GENERIC MEDICINE WILL HAVE THE SAME EFFECT? To get a generic medicine listed in Australia, a study must be performed on volunteers who take the generic formula, to make sure it works in the same way as the original medication.

When it comes to medicine, you don’t get a better product by paying more; the generic brand must undergo the same stringent tests as other medicines on the market.

I ONCE TOOK A GENERIC BRAND AND I DIDN’T FEEL IT WORKED AS WELL AS THE ORIGINAL. Sometimes if you take a medicine and think it’s going to have side effects, you can create side effects by thinking that way. However, generic medicines can have different inactive ingredients (“fillers”)

in the tablet which can make a difference if you have certain allergies; your pharmacist can advise which ingredients are used in the tablet.

SO I SHOULD GO FOR THE GENERIC BRAND? I certainly recommend them wherever possible – often you can save a fair bit of money and you aren’t getting an inferior product at all. Your pharmacist has your best interests at heart when they recommend them.

PREGNANCY ESSENTIALS PRECONCEPTION

12

A pregnancy multivitamin is usually recommended for all prospective mothers, with the body requiring up to 150% higher levels of nutrients to support both the mother and child. Most pregnancy vitamin brands provide key vitamins and minerals (folic acid, iodine and iron) to assist in growth and development of the foetus, designed to be taken prior to conception, throughout the duration of the pregnancy and after birth, to assist with the additional physical demands of breastfeeding.

Most at-home pregnancy tests can detect pregnancy relatively early in the cycle; the earlier pregnancy is confirmed, the easier it is to implement a good prenatal care routine to assist in the healthy development of the foetus.

with your pharmacist before taking any medicine when pregnant).

Dealing with a sick little one can be stressful; thankfully, the new generation of child-friendly pain relief* are specially formulated for infants and kids. As always, chat to your Pharmacist of GP before giving your child any medication.

NEWBORN NECESSITIES PREGNANCY Heartburn is a common symptom experienced during pregnancy; the increase of the hormone progesterone, and the expansion of the uterus can result in higher levels of acid in the oesophagus. Try eating smaller portions, going for a light walk after meals and taking an antacid to relieve heartburn symptoms (check

Steve Waugh AO has led a hugely celebrated and successful career with an extensive list of achievements and accolades to his name. Named Australian of the Year in 2004, Captaining Australia in 57 test matches with 41 test wins (the highest winning percentage in history), being included in the list of one hundred Australian Living Treasures by the National Trust of Australia, awarded the Order of Australia and the Australian Sports Medal, Steve is truly a remarkable man and we are extremely proud to have him as our Blooms The Chemist Brand Ambassador. Our Marketing Manager, Leigh Segboer, sat down with Steve and chatted about life, family, and what’s next for the Aussie cricket legend.

Steve

What lessons or experiences have you encountered during your cricketing career that can be applied to everyday life? Never use the following words - would’ve, could’ve, might’ve and should’ve, as they’re all excuses for not doing the hard work. There is no substitute for hard work, but you must always prioritise quality over quantity to achieve the best results. You’re obviously a fantastic role model, but who do you look up to? Who inspires you? I’m constantly inspired by the children and the families of children living with rare disease. They never complain and make the most of each and every day, with their incredible strength of character and positive attitude. Steve, what is the best advice you were ever given; do you have a saying or motto that you live by? Attitudes are contagious; is yours worth catching?

We were speaking the other day and you mentioned that your son is playing cricket. Have any of your kids expressed an interest in playing sport professionally? My daughters are passionate about the arts and culture, whilst my son is focussed on cricket. You have written 13 books, a huge achievement. Tell me a bit about your writing style; have you always had a passion for writing? I’m a bit old school, writing all my books in long hand and then making second and third draft changes on the computer. Most of the photos used are also from my personal collection as it adds to the authenticity of the whole project. My career as an author started as a oneoff but I found that writing for me was relaxing, and a great reference point for my cricket, providing me with many life and professional lessons to look back on.

On the subject of books, do you have any favourites by other authors? Are there any books that particularly speak to you or have had an impact on your life? I only read non-fiction as I love to learn about real life stories and people. My favourite book is Shackleton’s Way: Leadership Lessons from the Great Antarctic Explorer. Your organisation, the Steve Waugh Foundation, raises awareness and funding for children living with rare diseases. Can you tell me more about the work of your Foundation? We are the only stand-alone charity that supports children living with rare diseases in Australia. These kids are the orphans of the health system and we aim to stand beside them by providing a range of options including specialised equipment, medicines, assistance dogs, speech therapy etc., as well as giving them a platform and voice to be heard. Each and every day, my wife and I are involved in the workings of the foundation.

Waugh

the interview

Steve, what do you enjoy most about being the ambassador for Blooms The Chemist? Representing an organisation that cares about its customers and pays attention to details by putting family and the community first. It’s one big team with a clear vision to be the best it can be, which was the same with the Australian cricket team. You’ve accomplished so much; what has been the greatest achievement for you thus far and what’s your next challenge? I always look at my next challenge as my greatest achievement; climbing the Dolomite mountains in Italy in preparation for this year’s Captain’s Ride is my main focus right now.

YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO FACE OILS

ARGAN OIL

ROSEHIP OIL

JOJOBA

BIO OIL

Argan oil has been a buzzword in beauty for the past few years; high in omega 9 EFA (oleic acid) and vitamin E (an antioxidant that also provides skin with a surge of moisture), Swisse Argan Oil is easily absorbed and assists in strengthening the skin’s natural defence barrier through its combination of plant based squalene (a form of cholesterol) and sterols that act as a protective layer, preventing moisture loss. The addition of uplifting essentials oils, including Orange, May Chang, Palmarose and Rose Geranium provide astringent, antimicrobial properties that can assist in balancing sebum production.

Soothing and softening, rosehip oil is one of the most popular facial oils. Derived from the pressed seeds of the wild rose bush, rosehip oil has been said to reduce scars and stretch marks; antioxidants Vitamin C and Beta carotene (a precursor to Vitamin A) assist in collagen synthesis (necessary for plump, supported skin) and maintaining optimal cellular health.

Jojoba isn’t technically an oil; it’s actually a liquid wax (wax ester), identical to the wax ester found in the skin’s own sebum. This similarity is believed to allow the jojoba to penetrate deeply into the layers of the skin and deliver Vitamins A (for a hit of antioxidants), D & E and essential fatty acids for natural hydration.

A personal favourite of numerous celebs, Bio Oil has been a serious contender in the skin oil department for over thirteen years. The Bio-Oil formula is a combination of plant extracts and vitamins suspended in an oil base, with the addition of the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil™, responsible for the light, non-greasy feel and easy absorption. Vitamins A and E promote healthy cellular turnover and rejuvenation, whilst a blend of soothing oils (including calendula, lavender rosemary and chamomile) calm and condition.

BEST FOR: oil balancing, fine lines and wrinkles, dry and sun damaged skin, dry hair and brittle nails.

Trilogy’s Rosehip Oil range now includes their classic Certified Organic Rosehip Oil, and new formulations designed to target specific skin concerns; Trilogy Rosehip Oil Light Blend has been formulated for oily/combination skins, whilst the Trilogy Rosehip Oil Antioxidant+ contains nourishing essential fatty acids, with the addition of Rosapene™, derived from anti-ageing antioxidants found in tomatoes and acai. BEST FOR: scars and stretch marks, dehydration, eczema and dermatitis, ageing skin (including photo-ageing).

The Jojoba Company has crafted an extensive range of skincare products using jojoba as their hero ingredient; the classic Pure Jojoba oil can be used alone prior to moisturising, or try their Ultimate Jojoba ‘Youth Potion’, which is packed with additional antiageing ingredients such as CoQ10, manuka oil, camellia oil and baobab. BEST FOR: fine lines and wrinkles, wound healing, ageing skin, uneven skin tone, oily skin.

Bio-Oil should be massaged into the skin in a circular motion until fully absorbed and, for proven results, applied twice daily for a minimum of three months. BEST FOR: scars and stretch marks, uneven skin tone, ageing skin, dehydrated skin.

Patrick Murphy - Richmond

How long have you been a pharmacist within the Blooms The Chemist Group? I’ve been with Blooms since April 2014, in the Richmond store. Prior to that I had worked as a hospital pharmacist in several Sydney hospitals and had the opportunity work as chief pharmacist at a small country hospital. What do you enjoy most about being a Pharmacist? The best thing is being able to help people solve or manage their health problems. A key part of our day to day job is being able to advise people on effective treatments for some common health complaints. There is nothing more gratifying than having a customer come back to thank me for suggesting they use a treatment that has worked! I find it really satisfying to work with the doctors in our area to help manage the medication needs of some of the more complex patients. I also love the community aspect of the job. It’s nice to be able to see people month to month and have a bit of a catch up about how their family is going and what holidays they’ve been on!

What’s the best thing about the Richmond Community?

You were recently married - what was the big day like?

Where’s your favourite place to eat out?

Richmond has a great community spirit. It’s on the north-western fringe of Sydney but still has that feeling of being a smaller town, although the suburbs of the city are slowly getting closer. I am incredibly lucky as many of our staff and customers have been in the area for a long time and are actually good friends, which gives the store a really nice feel day to day.

The big day was perfect - I have to admit, my wife Natalie did all the organisation! It was a (relatively) small wedding down in Tasmania at the Museum of Old and New Art - an amazing art gallery set on the banks of the Derwent River. We were lucky that our family and friends were all able to make it down and we had some great weather on the day. My groomsmen were actually Kurt from Blooms at Wyong and Luke from Blooms at Erina, who have been great mates since Uni!

I love spicy food; if you aren’t sweating, it’s not hot enough! We have a fantastic Thai and incredible Indian restaurant really close by. They are so consistently good and reasonable value.

What do you think you would be doing if you weren’t a pharmacist? I am a mad Formula 1 fan and I’ve always thought that if I didn’t study pharmacy, I would have studied some form of engineering with the aim of working for a F1 team. There is something incredibly intoxicating about seeing a car go around a race track averaging in excess of 200km/h. I love the fact that it is a global spectacle which means I can combine my love of travel with Formula 1 Grand Prix; so far I’ve been lucky enough to go to races in Malaysia, Monaco and Singapore.

How do you like to keep fit? It is tricky to find time for exercise but I do like to do a lot of walking. My wife and I each have fitness tracking watches and we get a little competitive in trying to outdo each other. Nothing like competition for a little motivation!

What’s your favourite band/group? That’s a very difficult question! I bought a record player last year and now have a small vinyl record collection. The first albums I got were by The Beatles, Buddy Holly, The Little River Band and the soundtrack to the musical Hair (all “borrowed” from my dad’s old records). Since then, I have accumulated albums by Queen, The Shins, Flume, Radiohead, Tame Impala, Daft Punk, Miles Davis, Vampire Weekend, Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Coltrane, Hot Chip, Major Lazer, The Gorrilaz, David Bowie, Flight Facilities and New Order. My tastes are many and varied!

INCONTINENCE

A COMMON PROBLEM Did you know? • Approximately 4.8 million Australians aged 15 or over live with incontinence. • The majority (97.3%) of people with incontinence live at home and in the community. • 42.5% of people with incontinence suffer some form of skin complication such as reddening, itching or Incontinence Associated Dermatitis. Incontinence is sometimes considered taboo but it’s surprisingly common; living with incontinence can make life feel out of balance, but the right products and the right advice are the keys to better managing the condition. It’s important to find continence products that not only fit but have an appropriate absorbency level for your needs; the reality is, there’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach to product selection. Regular use of continence pads can change

the pH of the skin which weakens skin and makes it more susceptible to bacterial infection, skin irritations, reddening, allergic reactions and Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD). HARTMANN offers a complete a selection of products, such as MoliCare® Mobile and MoliMed®, that not only provide superior comfort and absorption, but are also designed to help reduce skin irritation.

HARTMANN Products: •

Support healthy skin and prevent infection by balancing the skin pH

Provide safe and rapid fluid absorption with superior 3 layer core

Super effective odour neutralisation

Dermatologically tested for hypoallergenic skin

If you have incontinence, know that you are not alone and that help is available. Talk to your local pharmacist or GP, or contact the National Continence Helpline (1800 33 00 66).; the National Continence Helpline is staffed by continence nurse advisors who provide free advice, referrals and resources to consumers and healthcare professionals.

The prevalence and cost of incontinence management is substantial and the federal government has taken notice. The federal government’s Continence Aids Payment Scheme (CAPS) assists eligible people with permanent and severe incontinence and reimburses some of the costs associated with purchasing continence products. To be eligible for CAPS, a health report needs to be completed by a healthcare professional. Information and application forms about CAPS can be downloaded from www.bladderbowel.gov.au.
