Hello Readers My name is Alicia and I welcome you to the first issue of Blossom Magazine. The start of summer, I had hopes of crafting a creative space where I could pour out and share my passions with a larger audience. With nothing but ambition, I cautiously approached my three best friends, Bella, Bella, and Maddie, (the better three fourths of the infamous BAMB), with an unfinished proposal for a digital, editorial magazine. They all gladly agreed to take part in this project and we immediately started spewing out endless streams of ideas and visions for the design, concept, and approach. We viewed our magazine as a way to represent all of our passions and interests, and through this mindset, we were able to put in maximum effort and detail into this project. We decided on the name Blossom because of our mutual love for flowers. We all agreed that each magazine should be unique and we found that basing each issue on a different type of flower will allow us to do just that. Each issue will revolve around a different flower and everything from the elements of design to the content of the articles will be in relation to it. The color palette will also be based on the flower and so will each lookbook and moodboard. Each issue will have recurring segments which include Gentile’s Journal, Bella’s Book Review, Alicia’s Analysis, Crystal Chronicles, And Placid Playlist. Each issue will begin with a spread on the origin of the flower. Gentile’s Journal is where Bella G explores and voices her opinions on current event issues that range from topics including social disputes to pop culture and everything in between. Bella’s Book Review is where Bella M. shares her avid love for reading through detailed and honest book reviews. Alicia’s Analysis is my own segment where I review and share my experiences on beauty products. Crystal Chronicles will showcase a different crystal each issue and summarize its meanings and uses. Finally, Placid Playlist will be a catalog of songs that we curate based on the ambiance of the issue. As you flip through the pages, you’ll see several sides of our personalities and we hope to provide you with nothing but a pleasant experience during your read. To close, I would like to thank my besties who wholeheartedly agreed to collaborate with me. Thank you guys for being so encouraging of my visions and responsive to all my needy asks. To the Bellas, thank you for your amazing articles and spreads, you two will forever be my favorite writers. Maddie, thank you for being the one to keep me sane through all the madness! The quality of your graphics surprise me everytime and I couldn’t have done any of this without your help and support. Cheers to our first issue, and the many more to come!

Cherry blossoms are prominent throughout Eastern Asian culture. Their beauty and lifespan are known to be short lived, which makes them a symbol for life’s fleeting nature, an important theme of Buddhism. The cherry blossom is known to represent both birth and death, beauty and violence. They are also heavily associated with an acceptance of fate and times of renewal. All of the combined symbolisms made them prominent in Asian art, film, music, and more. In Japan, Korea, and China, many corporations have cherry blossom themed specials, feeding into the popular frenzy. Because of their popularity, they are featured on many consumer items like plates and kimonos and are a commonly used symbol in Irezumi, the traditional art of Japanese tattoos. Cherry blossoms and their leaves are also edible and often featured in traditional Asian sweets and drinks like mochi cakes, candies, cocktails, and teas. There's also a special practice called Hanami, where one drinks under a blooming cherry tree. It started during the Nara period (710-794) originally with ume trees but as cherry blossoms gained more attention, the practice began to occur beneath them instead. People would dine and drink under the tree in celebratory feasts. The custom was first limited to the Imperial Court, but it later spread to the samurai society and eventually to the common people. In Korea, cherry blossoms were not always as beloved as they are now. Yoshino cherry trees, one of over four hundred species of cherry blossoms, were first planted at Seoul's Changgyeonggung Palace by the Japanese during their rule. They even introduced festival viewings of the tree, a tradition carried on even after the Japanese surrendered at the end of World War II. However, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Japanese surrender, many of the cherry blossom trees were cut down to show their division from Japan. However, Koreans planted different variations of cherry blossom trees that originated in their landscape and the festivals they hold today bring in thousands of tourists. In popular Japanese myths, cherry blossoms often make an appearance. One is about a story of a samurai in the district of Wakegori who was lonely after all
of his loved ones passed away. As age overtook him, he found the cherry tree in his garden to be his source of comfort for it was the same one he used to play under as a child. When the tree also passed and left him alone again, the samurai grew disheartened and committed hara-kiri, a form of japanese ritual suicide, underneath the tree on January 16th. Legend says that his spirit entered the tree and brought it back to life and now every year on January 16th, the blossoms bloom. In the history of Japanese military, the cherry blossoms were used to encourage soldiers. It acted as propaganda of sorts, like in the “Song of Young Japan'', soldiers were described to be, “ready like the myriad cherry blossoms to scatter '' and in Akiko Yosano's poetry in 1932, he encouraged warriors to endure through their suffering, comparing dead warriors to cherry blossoms. During World War II, the cherry blossom became a symbol of nationalism. During the Battle of Leyte Gulf, some argued that if their plan failed, Japanese ships would be threatened and in serious danger. In response to these concerns, others stated that the Navy would be able to “bloom as flowers of death”. In the Battle of Peleliu, the last message of the Japanese forces was “Sakura, Sakura '' which is “Cherry Blossom, Cherry Blossom”. Pilots would even paint cherry blossoms on the sides of their planes before embarking on suicide mssions, sometimes bringing a cherry blossom branch along with them. The government encouraged their citizens to believe that fallen soldiers were reincarnated into cherry blossoms.

Blossom book
The cherry blossom is a flower that carries deep sentiment and symbolism among Asian countries and is a huge part of their culture. These seasonal flowers have become the object of everyone’s attention during their blooming period, influencing pop culture, food, and festivities. This cultural tradition is known in Japan as hanami and dates back to the Nara era (710794) when cherry blossoms were initially imported from China and became an object of admiration. Now, hanami is a celebration of the blooming of the blossoms called sakura, but also the welcoming of spring. This period of time also plays a similar role in countries such as Korea, where it is more commonly referred to as beot-gott. The festivities influence almost every part of life during the given period, from cherry blossom flavored food to home appliances. Food, drinks, and other delicacies are specifically made for festivals and large food chains also have annual specials whether it be merchandise, food, or decor. In Korea, petal-shaped cakes are specifically made for the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival. Not only do these treats resemble the shape of a cherry blossom petal, but they are filled with blossom extract. Many bakeries strongly campaign their springtime selections of goods and have found that they sell much more than their other seasonal lines. The cherry red bean paste made with cherry
blossom flavor is not only applied to dessert foods, but you can also find cherry blossom burgers, bagels, and dumplings. Similarly, eastern branches of large corporations such as Starbucks, Baskin-Robbins, Haagen Dazs, Shake Shack, and Coffee Bean, envelop the blooming season into their brand in their own ways. Fully embracing the season, Starbucks branches in Korea and Japan offer a variety of limited edition drinks and pastries, as well as mugs, tumblrs, keychains, gift cards and other forms of merchandise centered around the flowers. Additionally, Baskin-Robbins and Haagen Dazs release limited edition cherry blossom flavored ice cream that are only offered during this season. Food and beverage industry brands highly campaign during this season to express the thrill of a new
season, but also with the hope that this enthusiastic morale will continue in the summer where sales are at an all time high. Flower-flavored food sounds quite reasonable, but the influence of cherry blossoms on culture doesn’t stop at edible delights. Tableware, clothes, makeup, accessories, art, and songs revolve around the flower during the festive season. Makeup brands such as Etude House, 3ce, Innisfree, and Mac all welcome their seasonal line of products centered around the cherry blossom flower. Additionally, plates and other tableware are commissioned by large brands and made with limited edition designs featuring cherry blossom petals or their pink color. Le Creuset, a French cookware company, took part in this brand campaigning by beginning to offer limited editions versions of their most products. In cases like this, spokespeople of the brands have come out to say that since the cherry blossom design is so elegant, it is actually favored more and heavily sought out in the spring. Also, since spring is the beginning of wedding season, many people buy these porcelain plates for that purpose as well.
Besides material goods, cherry blossoms are also incorporated into songs as artists attempt to recreate the feeling of the blooming season into music. Every street, city, and marketplace play these songs during the entirety of the season, making them rise on the music charts when the blooming season first begins. Asian pop stars such as IU and Busker Busker are renowned examples as their songs dedicated to cherry blossoms resurface, almost traditionally, during this time. Playlists are also put together by asian creators for spectators to listen to while going to watch the cherry blossoms bloom. Consequently, some playlists are also created in the winter, months after the season is over, in order to reminisce on that period of time. These playlists are titled with nostalgic phrases such as “POV: it’s spring and the cherry blossoms are starting to bloom.”
Besides the world-renowned festivals where the blooming of cherry blossoms are spectated and celebrated, events and concerts also take place embracing the theme. However, the large festivals are still the main festivity that takes place, fully encompassing the celebration and spirit of the cherry blossom blooming season. The most popular and busiest festival in Japan is called the Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival, located in Tokyo. The event gains traction from locals as well as tourists and serves as a prominent party spot. There are over 1,200 cherry blossom trees located in the park with picnic spots already set up in the grass for visitors to enjoy. The festival allows visitors to spectate and simply observe the trees or also take part in activities including local crafts and food, trips on the boating lake, live music, and dance performances.
At night, evening performances are accompanied by the illuminated trees, known as yozakura, allowing spectators to enjoy the view at any time of the day. Festivals also take place in other countries, including Korea. Previously mentioned, the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival is the largest and most famous in the country. Located in a small military port, the city hosts thousands of visitors during the festival time, offering an amazing view of the cherry blossoms trees along with a tour of a replica Korean warship. Moreover, other countries and cities host their own version of cherry blossoms festivals, also celebrating the wonderful sight of spring, that is the spectacular cherry blossoms flower.

Lincoln: "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." This quote made me ponder the concept as it relates to the characters in the book. How do Seth and Kieran use their power when they are both the oldest kids left on the Empyrean? What does this power do to them? How does Waverly change once she is the only one who can save the girls from the hands of the New Horizon? And how do these kids act when they have the chance to get revenge for what happened to them?
Overall, this whole series was a rollercoaster ride and I would
definitely
recommend
it
to
anyone
who
likes
thrilling, captivating, and mind wracking writing. It was a truly refreshing series that got me out of a reading slump and made me excited for the next books. If you don’t rush to the nearest library or bookstore to get these books now, what are you doing? Trust me when I say that you will want to read these books right after one
another,
and
even
then,
you
will
have
these
characters and this story in the back of your mind all day.
