Fernando Botero Angulo: the Most Colombian of the Colombian Artists Fernando Botero, the famous Colombian painter and sculptor is well known for his ‘larger than life’ figures; his signature style is known as ‘Boterismo’, where he presents people and figures in exaggerated size, sometimes satirically to criticise the political system or sometimes in humour, as the situation demands. He depicts the human life with baroque expression, sometimes with humour, sometimes with deep emotions. He was born in 1932 in Medellin, Colombia. His love of his motherland, where he spent first twenty years of his life, was reflected in his self-title, "the most Colombian of Colombian artists.“ He lost his father when he was only four and brought up by his mother, a seamstress and an uncle who had an important role in his life. In his childhood, he could not get any institutional training in art, though he was very much impressed by the baroque style of the colonial churches and the city life of Medellin during his growing years. Fernando Botero Angulo: the Most Colombian of the Colombian Artists The painting style of Botero may be termed ‘abstract’ in the most fundamental sense of the word with basic colours and aesthetically chosen shapes and sizes according to his intuitive thinking. Termed as “Picasso of Latin America”, he considers himself "most Colombian artist living” though he spends one month a year in Colombia. This is probably due to his isolation from the current trends in international art world. The violence in Colombia affected him very much and in 2004, Botero exhibited a series of 27 drawings and 23 paintings on the subject of violence in Colombia from the drug cartels. He donated the works to the National Museum of Colombia which has exhibited the series. Fernando Botero Angulo: the Most Colombian of the Colombian Artists In 2004-2005 Botero painted the ‘Abu Gharib’ series as a permanent accusation against the abuses in Abu Gharib on the Iraqi prisoners by American forces. This series was first exhibited in Europe and gained large international attention. The work was based on reports of United States forces' abuses of prisoners at Abu Gharib prison during the Iraq War. This series consisted of more than 85 paintings and 100 drawings and was exhibited at two United States locations in 2007, including Washington, DC. "These works are a result of the indignation that the violations in Iraq produced in me and the rest of the world," "If any museum wants to show works of torture, well, I would be delighted," Mr. Botero said. "The museum that decides to show it would have to be conscious that many people would be repulsed and be against …” Fernando Botero Artworks
