Seek -
As you begin your planning process, review our pages in detail. We have taken special care to put the leading Emerald Coast wedding industry suppliers into your hands. Peace - As you begin to prepare all the details of your big event,
remember that everyone including you will enjoy the event if you keep a sophisticated yet simple theme for your wedding. While it is your one day to shine with your groom, start your planning with the end in mind. Remind yourself along the way that ultimately only certain details are truly necessary. The fewer details the better. This way you can concentrate on fine tuning them weeks in advance of the wedding as opposed to spending your wedding day “ firefighting” an array of issues that come from trying to pack too much into the day. Be still and know that your wedding day should be about the bride, the groom, and your vows to one another. All the other event accessories are simply the tools to place your wedding day into the memories of your loved ones. We wish you the best of planning as you build your dream design for your day! T
rying to think of creative details for your big day isn’t always as easy as it seems. Many brides want to combine the elegance of classic traditions with the flair of modern touches. We’re all familiar with the adage of “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence in her shoe,” which began in England during the Victorian era and was intended to convey wishes of good luck and prosperity for the bride as she married. Brides dating back to ancient Rome even wore blue to symbolize modesty, fidelity and love. However, it’s no longer necessary to confine your “something blue” to the more modern tradition of a blue frilly garter or lacy lingerie. So when you’re deciding on how to incorporate your something blue, consider a few of these more unique options.
Have one of your groom’s handkerchiefs embroidered in light blue. Consider personalizing the cloth with your married monogram,
your groom’s initials or your wedding date, and then carry it with your bouquet during the ceremony. You may instead choose to have

it – or another meaningful item or message – sewn into the lining of your gown as a permanent memento from your big day. If your groom doesn’t use handkerchiefs, ask his mother for a small piece of his baby blanket or other meaningful linen that will be a lasting reminder of your love for him.
Add a splash of blue in your bridal bouquet. Even if blue isn’t in your
color palette, there are plenty of flowers with slight bluish hues that may work well with your chosen scheme. Hydrangeas, orchids, hyacinth and delphinium add beautiful, natural touches of blue, while roses and daisies can be dyed to a shade you like. And if blue flowers are simply not a option for your bouquet, you can have your florist wrap your bouquet in a delicate blue ribbon or include blue accents, such as beads, crystals or pearls, into your bouquet.
Take it to the top. Adding a hint of blue to your headpiece, tiara, hairpins,
comb or veil may be just the right touch you’re looking for. With the variety of selections available to brides everywhere, you might consider looking at those with a little blue in them. This subtle touch will add a sweet touch to your ensemble without being overpowering.
Consider blue jewelry. Whether you want to wear lots of accessories or just a few meaningful pieces, you should think about adding your “something blue” in your jewelry. Popular gemstones like blue topaz, aquamarine and sapphire, as well as unique blue pearls, offer a sophisticated way to include the color of loyalty in your wedding wear. No matter if you wear blue in your earrings, necklace, bracelet, ring, anklet or other piece of jewelry, just make sure it’s something you love. Some brides even opt to wear a blue-stoned brooch or vintage pin on their gowns or in the hem of their dresses, but as a general rule, fine jewelry is better appreciated when everyone can see it. Get blue suede shoes. Okay, so blue suede may be out, but subtle blue shoes are in. Consider wearing a designer shoe in a light blue shade or find a more traditional white or bone-colored shoe with a blue sole. Also try adding your own embellishment if you can’t find the right shoe with blue accents already. If you’re not planning to wear shoes for your ceremony, have a little fun with your feet and paint your nails a delicate blue hue or add blue gems with nail art. Wrap it with a bow. Or sash. If you want to go all-out with blue, ask your bridal shop consultant about adding a sash or bow to your gown. Some styles already come with sashes, so you may choose to replace yours with a blue one. If you can’t seem to find one you like, just ask your seamstress to add a cornflower blue bow to the lining of your gown for a secret touch. Paint it to perfection. Without going over-the-top, add a splash of blue to your wedding day make-up. Try using a smoky gray-blue eye shadow for a dramatic touch, or, if you have light eyes, use a hint of deep blue eye shadow to accent more natural make-up colors. There are so many ways to incorporate your “something blue.” Whether it’s fun and whimsical or classic and fanciful, just be sure it’s meaningful to you. When you’re happy, it’ll show. By using a touch that’s all your own, sweet memories of your wedding day will last a lifetime. • www.EmeraldCoastBrides.com EMERALD COAST BRIDES • 17

elly and Joey met at their place of employment, the hospital critical care unit, where Kelly worked as a registered nurse and Joey as a physician assistant. On a random Friday afternoon at their home, Joey hid the engagement ring in a cocktail shaker and the couple became engaged.
The couple decided to rent a secluded beach house for a whole week at Mimosa Springs, which was the perfect location for the wedding and reception. The wedding ceremony was short and simple with two violinists and a beautiful sand ceremony that was held on the beach in front of the house. The couple’s daughter served as the flower girl. Reverend Billy Richardson was the officiating minister for the service. The bride wore a Maggie Sottero diamond white A-line one-piece gown with lace up closure made of Capri 20 • EMERALD COAST BRIDES www.EmeraldCoastBrides.com
taffeta. The gown featured a dramatic open back and shoulder straps with a plunging V-neckline. Instead of a veil, the bride wore fuchsia orchids in her hair. Faulkenberry’s Bridal of Pliladelphia, MS, provided her wedding attire and hair. The four bridesmaids wore caribbean blue knee length dresses by Mori Lee. The groomsmen wore khaki suits with brown flip-flops. The bride walked the sandy aisle carrying a bold, exotic bouquet featuring Asiatic lilies, cymbidium and vandal orchids in orange, green and fuchsia with highlights of blupurem greenery and tropical leaf at the cuff. The bridesmaids carried smaller bouquets of the bridal lily with dendro orchids and blupurem greenery, all in the bold bridal colors.
The wedding ceremony featured a four cornered bamboo arbor with fabric wrap and two tie-ons of bold bridal florals and palm fronds. All were beautifully decorated with an array of flowers, lights and lanterns. The aisle markers featured bridal flowers, grasses and palms. Dede Edwards Photography captured the beauty of the wedding ceremony. The bride and groom will be able to look back upon for years to come and cherish the memory of their wedding. For the reception, which was held around the pool and cabana, tables were decorated with wreaths of bridal florals and palm fronds that held large hurricane lanterns. BBJ Linens Company provided table linens, in apple green and turquoise. Bella Flora beautifully decorated both the wedding reception and ceremony. The couple’s cake was a three tier white cake with fudge and raspberry filling, made by Southern Style Desserts. It was decorated with beautiful orchids and palm fronds and sat atop two glass blocks. The couple served a wonderful dinner with a full open bar. Chef Todd Misener from Blue Mountain Catering provided food for the reception, bridal luncheon and rehearsal dinner. Entertainment for the reception included a four-man band from Gulf Talent Services by the name of Beach Mice. Special thanks to Dede Edwards Photography and Emerald Coast Video Productions for capturing the memories of the entire wedding ceremony and reception. After the garter and bouquet toss, the couple left the reception and returned to their room at Mimosa Springs where rose petals, candles and champagne awaited them, compliments of the bridesmaids. The couple honeymooned in Costa Rica at an allinclusive resort where they enjoyed ATV and horseback riding, a Jet Ski tour, and the beautiful waterfalls, beaches and mountains. The couple now enjoys married life residing in Madison, Mississippi where the groom is a physician assistant in cardiac surgery and the bride is a family nurse practitioner at a family practice. • • Flowers, decorations, and wedding planning and coordination: Bella Flora • Food: (reception, bridal luncheon, and rehearsal dinner) Blue Mountain Catering: Chef Todd Misener, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459 • Photography: Dede Edwards Photography • Videography: Emerald Coast Video Productions • Cake: Southern Style Desserts • Minister Officiant: Rev. Welcome Bags
A
lright brides, let’s face it - you will probably be way too busy in the days before your wedding to greet each guest as they arrive. The next best thing to meeting each and every guest personally is to provide, a personal, fun Welcome Bag, which can be a great way to introduce guests to the destination and mood of your wedding. When planning your Welcome Bag, simply think about items you wish you had when staying in a hotel suite. Also remember, that you only need to provide a Welcome Bag to each room, not each guest.
The first essential of any Welcome Bag is simple: have a nice piece of stationary welcoming your guests to your wedding. The one page card should stay in the style of your wedding in terms of colors and decorations. If you are on a budget, then simply handwrite a lovely message to welcome your guests. Just make sure to practice your handwriting skills beforehand. The second essential is food, water, and treats. These are great essentials for your guests, especially if they had to travel by

plane or criss-cross a time zone. Bottled water, cookies, and fresh coffee, all these can turn the hotel room into a cozy place to relax in between wedding events. When choosing the food and beverage choices, keep the season and the local specialties in mind. If the wedding is in a cold, wintery landscape, put in some cocoa powder or a miniature bottle of brandy. If you have a beach location, bottled water is definitely a must! Also consider, having a local, refreshing specialty drink brought up to the room upon the guest’s arrival. continued
9 Little favors that incorporate a th Make sure your Welcome Bag features local goodies from the area. If the city is especially known for a food or a spice, try to include it in the bag. If you are on a small budget, consider baking homemade cookies for your guests. It will still bring a homey feel to the hotel room and it will let your guests know that you were thinking about them. Little favors that incorporate a theme or signature of your wedding can be added to the bag. For a beach wedding, personalized flip-flops, fans, and a disposable camera are practical additions that your guests can enjoy. When thinking about your guests and their needs, there are likely to be a few items that your guests may have forgotten. Be sure to include items such as sunscreen, a beach towel, or even band-aids in the bag so your guests can have everything they need on hand. To give the bag a luxurious perk, include miniature spa products for your guests to enjoy. If the resort has an in-house spa, see if they offer small products so you can give your guests an idea of the products and services they can partake in while there. Although scented products can give a hotel room a cozy feel, steer clear of getting your guests a scented candle, since your guests may have allergies or sensitivity to certain fragrances. While food is the most enjoyable thing you can add to a gift bag, one of the most essential items that your guests will need is an itinerary of scheduled wedding events. Let them know what time they must arrive for any rehearsals, hair appointments, rehearsal dinners and brunches. If many of your guests are attending your wedding from out of state, they will be unfamiliar with
34 • EMERALD COAST BRIDES www.EmeraldCoastBrides.com
the area. So, it’s important to make them feel comfortable with the surroundings by providing brochures and maps. When providing them with the information on where to go and what time to be there, also give them an idea on how long it will take them to get there. You don’t want guests getting stuck in traffic. If there is a lot of time between wedding events, then let guests know how much time they will have to themselves on the itinerary. Include brochures that can inform your guests about local activities, including museums, parks, and shopping areas for them to enjoy during their down time. Tickets or passes to events in the area, such as fishing exhibitions, underwater snorkeling, or even a movie for the kids, will encourage your guests to get out and have fun on their own. If there are a number of activities at the resort, make sure each bag includes a list of activities. Last, the Welcome Bag doesn’t actually have to be a bag. It can be a basket, a creative box, or even a tote bag. If you are doing a fun, beach wedding, a tote bag is a great idea because guests can also put their stuff in it when they go outdoors. If you are looking for a more elegant approach, a gift basket is a classic, tasteful choice. A pre-packaged gift basket is also a good choice if you don’t have time to fill the Welcome Bags yourself. However, if you do a basket, I would recommend a handwritten note welcoming your guest to the weddings, so that there is still a personal touch. If you want to try something new, several web sites offer colorful boxes that can open in unusual ways. Just be sure you have enough room for all the goodies.
eme or signature of your wedding can be added to the bag. 9
A Welcome Bag is a great, personalized gift for your out-of-town guests. But, with all of the planning that goes on, you might not have time to fill the bags yourself. Talk to your wedding planner about vendors in the area they can create a lovely welcome bag for you, so you don’t have to lose precious hours of sleep. Many vendors are now adding this as one of their services, and in some cases, wedding planners will perform the service for an additional fee. Just remember to have fun with the favors and genuinely let your guests know that you appreciate them coming to your wedding. •

Carmen & Eric Buell h
Carmen Nicole Kiehm and Eric Michael Buell were joined together in marriage on October 11, 2008 in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.
T
he couple met at the restaurant where they both worked while they were both also attending the same college, Louisiana State University. Carmen was a hostess and Eric was a server/bartender. Most of the other employees were also students, so everyone usually hung out together after work. Eric flirted for months, but Carmen was already dating someone at the time. Not to mention that a few of the other girls that worked with them informed Carmen of Eric’s bad boy image and flirtatiousness. Well, the relationship that Carmen was in ended and then one day Eric finally asked her out and they have been together ever since…7 years later. Carmen says that Eric’s bad boy image ended with her. Eric proposed in front of the couple’s Christmas tree on December 1, 2006 and soon after planned a surprising engagement celebration at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, MS.
38 • EMERALD COAST BRIDES www.EmeraldCoastBrides.com
Carmen was surprised with a couple’s massage and dinner reservations afterwards, where both of their parents surprisingly awaited them at the table. Besides her wedding day, Carmen says that it was one of the best days of her life. Their engagement was long due to a change in career and an accelerated nursing program. To save themselves the stress of trying to plan the perfect wedding on top of nursing school, they decided on a wedding date after Carmen graduated. They found Panama City Weddings who began the wedding details and handled all of the planning for her. The wedding took place on the beach at the Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club. Susan Long of Panama City Weddings coordinated the event. The bride wore a strapless ivory gown by San Patrick with
a sweetheart neckline and pearl beading scattered in various places around the entire dress. A small train flowed from the gown. The veil was waist length with ivory tulle and satin trim. The bridesmaids wore knee length dresses by Suri, in salmon with a hazelnut empire waistband. The groomsmen wore beige linen suits with ivory linen shirts. The bride carried a bouquet of white and pink hydrangeas, pink stargazer lilies, and white and pink calla lilies. Ivory ribbon wrapped the stems, which were pinned with pearls. Musgrove Florist, Panama City Beach provided flowers for the wedding. White and green hydrangeas at the top of each corner decorated the square white wrought iron altar while tulle hung across the top and down the sides. Tulle and wrought iron lined both sides of the aisle with sprinkles of pink and ivory rose petals. Genya Garrett with Vue Photography took pictures immediately following the ceremony. Sarah Powers Media, Panama City Beach also captured a videography of events. The reception was held at The Beach Club where the couple took their first dance to “The way you look tonight” by Frank Sinatra. The reception decorations included circular paper lanterns and white lights that hung from the ceiling on the outside terrace. For the centerpiece, white candles inside of hurricane lamps filled with sand covered the white linen tables. Various vases filled with lilies were placed around the room. Each table had sprinkles of pink and ivory flower petals and included tea lights. A beautiful illumination of tea lights lined the tops of every windowsill. The Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club provided all of the food for the reception. The wedding cake was a three tiered amaretto cake with light pink butter crème icing. White and milk chocolate shells and sand dollars decorated the entire cake. The groom’s cake was a square chocolate cake with purple icing and a three dimensional gold sportsman’s paradise fleur de lis. The groom’s continued next page

cake was inspired by the LSU colors and of his love for hunting and fishing. Sugar Art by Angela in Panama City Beach, FL. made both cakes. Conch Republic entertained the guests with reggae, beach and island music, which coordinated with the couple’s beach theme. A few songs of the couple’s Louisiana heritage were also incorporated. A steel drummer also contributed to the entertainment. The entertainers were very interactive with the audience and kept the dance floor moving. The bride and groom joined their guests aboard the shuttle bus that transported everyone back to the Sandestin Hilton where all of the guests were staying. The
party continued into the night at the hotel bar. Before leaving for their honeymoon, the couple remained at the hotel for another night, to keep from feeling rushed. They then honeymooned at Sandals in Antigua, an all-inclusive resort, where they stayed for 10 days! True beach lovers…married on the beach and honeymooned on the beach. Eric and Carmen feel extremely blessed to have the amazing family that they both married into. They both truly love and enjoy being around each other’s family and would not have it any other way! The couple happily resides in New Orleans, Louisiana. •

Dear Liz Dear Liz,
I really want to have a destination wedding, but I don’t know the best location for it. The mountains, the beach, Europe, where is the best place to have a destination wedding? How do you start planning it? First of all, mountains, beaches, European cities, all of these places are classic choices for a destination wedding. But, couples also choose to get married in big cities, grassy countryside, and even, amusement parks. Destination weddings are also a great idea in order to avoid family strife. If you and your fiancé both have family in different areas, choosing a neutral location for the wedding will help you avoid picking a location that is only close to one side of the family. Since destination weddings have become so popular over the past few years, many hotels now offer on-site wedding consultants that can educate you on all that the town and facility have to offer for a wedding. Consult with the planner about quality vendors in the area, so you can get started on planning the details of the ceremony. Make sure you will be able to travel to the destination 3-4 times before the wedding. You will likely need to check up on details of the wedding several times before the big day, so if traveling to the location is very pricey on your budget, you should probably pick a location closer to home.
Dear Liz,
I am having a man as one of my bridesmaids – and my fiancé is having a girl as one of his groomsmen. I don’t know what they should wear. I want them to match the wedding party, but I don’t want people to confuse her for one of my bridesmaids (and viceversa). What should they get a for bridesmaid/groomsmen gifts? Actually, having a male bridesmaid or having female groomsmen is becoming more and more typical. So, it is likely that your guests will understand your selections and that they will not be confused at the ceremony and reception. However, it is understandable to be concerned over what they should wear. For your male bridesmaid, he should wear a simple black or white tux (which ever matches the party), with the tie, vest, or
comber bun in the same color as the bridesmaid dresses. If that color is already taken by the groomsmen, then simply leave the tux in a singular color. Similarly, the female groomsman should wear a simple all black dress, similar in style to that of your bridesmaids. That way, all the colors and styles are cohesive, without being too matchy, in order to avoid confusion. When it comes to the gifts, they should also be similar to those of the group. If you are giving your bridesmaids’ jewelry, perhaps get the male a nice pair of cufflinks to match. If the groom is giving cigars to his groomsmen, then perhaps a lovely martini set for the girl (unless, of course, she smokes cigars). The polite thing to do is make sure both of them are comfortable receiving separate gifts based on their gender, otherwise it could be awkward. The important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and appreciated as a member of the wedding party. The rest of it are just accessories.
Dear Liz,
My fiancé and I are on a budget, so we are trying to keep our guest list small. Is it okay if we ask single guests not to bring a date? I don’t want to be rude, but I don’t want the guest list to get out of hand, and I don’t want a whole bunch of strangers at my wedding. Help! How do I let my guests know without being impolite? First of all, you ask your single guests to come alone, but you must be honest with them. Simply tell them that the reason you can’t let them bring a guest is that you want to keep the ceremony small. They should understand and appreciate your wishes. However, if there is a person who has been in a relationship for several years, or if they live together, then you have to invite both of them as a couple. If you are having a sitdown dinner at the reception, then make sure the single guests are seated with those that have similar interests. That way, they don’t feel out of place or lonely at the reception. Another option to ensure that they feel comfortable is to ask them where they would like to be seated. Show your single guests that you appreciate their understanding and that you still want them to have an enjoyable evening. continued next page

Dear Liz,
I don’t know what to do about my wedding cake. I am very lactose-intolerant, so I can’t have a traditional wedding cake. Should I just do one so that the guests can eat it or can I just have a different dessert at the reception? Food allergies are very common today, so many bakers are able to accommodate to special requests. Before you give up on the wedding cake of your dreams, talk to a few of the bakeries in town to see if they can do something special. Bakers are typically able to accommodate if you can provide them with a recipe that they can use. Also, see if any bakeries are vegan friendly, meaning that no dairy products are used in their desserts. Having multiple cakes, instead of one main wedding cake, is becoming more popular as brides are trying to accommodate for the many preferences of their guests. If you are having a sit-down dinner, a well-decorated cake can make a beautiful centerpiece instead of flowers. If you are having a southern-inspired wedding, different flavors of pies can be a nice substitution for a wedding cake. Delicious cheesecakes, chocolate mousse, or red velvet cake are other options, just make sure they are decorated to make the colors and theme of your wedding. If you want more of an array of desserts instead of just cake, try a dessert table with cookies and pastries. It will be a nice addition and guests will be able to pick and choose as they please. Just make sure they all don’t get up at once and bombard the table.
Dear Liz,
I am planning a lavish, outdoor beach wedding in March. But, I want to have a backup plan, just in case it rains. How should I let my guests know that there’s a Plan B? First, I’m so glad you have thought about having a backup plan. It is so sad when a wedding (and all the planning) is ruined by bad weather. If you are having your wedding at a resort, talk to the coordinator about backup options. It may be as simple as moving the wedding into a beautiful ballroom, and in even some cases, you can keep your original design selections that you had chosen for the beach. If you have to
completely switch venues include that information in your invitation. Have a separate piece of stationary that outlines where the guests should go in the event of bad weather. If a backup plan has not been finalized, simply state that in the event of bad weather, the location may change. As the wedding approaches, you should let guests know the final wedding destination 2-3 days in advance. Keep in touch through calls, email, text message, or leave a note for each of them at the hotel. If you want to wait until the last minute to decide the venue, then coordinate group transportation for your guests. That way, you won’t have to worry about guests showing up to the wrong location.
Dear Liz,
I am having a beach wedding and reception. I really want the pictures to look perfect. I would like my guests to wear all white to the wedding, but I don’t know how to tell them. What is the polite way to let them know what the dress code will be? First, if you are having a very small wedding (under 50 people) then it is likely that your family and friends will comply with such a request. However, it may prove to be too difficult to have everyone coordinated in a large wedding, so you may have to think of a compromise. Typically, the dress code for the wedding, such as “Black Tie Preferred” or “Full Dress” should be included at the bottom of the invitation. However, for a specific request such as yours, it may require some explaining. Should the white attire be formal or informal? You may want to include a small note with the invitation that describes the dress code. Use phrasing such as “The Bride asks” or “The Bride would prefer” so your guests do not feel forced to comply with the dress code if they want to attend your wedding. Remember to be flexible. Ultimately, your guests are there for your nuptials and etiquette rules require that you let them attend in the attire they feel comfortable in. With all the thought you’ve put into your wedding, it should be a lovely affair with or without a basic white color palette.

Groom Your Groom: Ways to help prime your prince M
y friend recently told me about the horrific events leading up to her wedding day. It was literally like hearing about scenes from a movie. After a lovely rehearsal dinner with family and friends, her groom had too many drinks and got so sloppy-drunk that he fell – literally, flat on his face – on the pavement outside a bar. After several hours in the emergency room with his best man, the groom showed up to the church exhausted, complete with a line of stitches above his left eye. What a nightmare! Now, I’m sure you’re thinking there’s no way on earth your future husband would let that happen…especially just before the biggest day of your lives. But don’t be surprised if offering a few loving tips to your prince charming could actually help him plan ahead and help you both avoid any possible wedding disasters. First things first – and as a nod to my friend – encourage your groom to leave out the booze on the big day. That’s not to say he can’t have a good time the night before, but just emphasize how much you want him to enjoy and remember this special occasion. continued

Now, this is a delicate subject. If your groom has an abundance of facial hair (e.g. a uni-brow, noticeable nose hair or a few wild ear hairs), kindly encourage him – or take him if you must – to see your stylist or aesthetician for waxing or electrolysis. These trained professionals can easily remove any unwanted hair without leaving your man looking feminine or over-groomed. Some men are already aware of their facial-hair problem areas and choose to shave or trim them on their own. If your groom does a good job keeping it all in-check, let him. But don’t be afraid to offer your loving touch if he needs a little encouragement cleaning up his act.
Let him know there will be plenty of time on your honeymoon to let loose and have fun. And if you think he may need a little help keeping the merriment in check, just ask his best man or another groomsman to help out. If your groom is planning a guy’s day fishing or golfing just before the wedding, send him off with a bottle of sunscreen. Few things look worse in wedding photos than bright red, sunburned faces and those lovely white raccoon eyes from sunglasses. If your groom isn’t much for sunscreen, give him a bottle of spray-on sunblock for easy application. Also, giving him a Greg Normanstyle straw golf hat will help protect his sweet face for your big day, and it’s sure to give the guys something to joke about.
52 • EMERALD COAST BRIDES www.EmeraldCoastBrides.com
When planning a beautiful beach wedding, go for the gusto and embrace the mood of the coast. Have your groom wear linen or light cotton instead of a traditional tuxedo. Linen is perfect for more informal ceremonies, while light cotton won’t wrinkle as easily and will add a slightly more formal touch. Khaki linen pants with a white linen shirt (tie, optional) will be perfect for your laid-back wedding where guests are asked to dress casually or where you know wearing a suit in the summer heat would be miserable for your groom. Light cotton suits might be appropriate if you’re having a more traditional ceremony or when the weather will be a little cooler. The idea is to embrace the ambiance of your destination wedding and have your groom dress accordingly. Whatever you decide, be sure his attire goes well with the style of your gown. In that vein, if you’re planning for everyone to walk barefoot at your beach ceremony, take your groom to the spa for a his-and-hers manipedi. Please assure him beforehand that they will not paint his nails unless he wants a coat of
clear polish. If he’s never had a manicure or pedicure before, he’ll be pleasantly surprised with the outcome, and you’ll know his nails are ready for their close-ups on your big day. Who doesn’t love photos of the newlyweds’ hands on the bridal bouquet or beside their marriage license? For beach weddings, pictures of the bride and groom’s feet in the sand are just as sweet. And as the years go by, you can revisit your wedding pictures and even take updated photos of the same poses to add in the back of your wedding album. By taking the initiative to help your groom look and feel his best on your wedding day, you’ll be setting the right tone for the beginning of a long, happy life together. Remember to make requests of your groom, not demands. If he gives you advice or shares desires of his own, be sure to listen and consider them before making any decisions about the wedding. Treat him with the same respect and love you expect to receive from him, and you’ll be glad you did. •

he community of Carillon Beach has become one of the hottest and extremely popular new venues along the Emerald Coast of Florida. This unique community has carefully put together a wedding program that has everything the destination bride desires! Carillon is located 2 miles east of Rosemary Beach near the Inlet Beach Bridge, oriented east to west, with almost a mile of pristine beachfront. It is close to the 30A corridor, yet separate and serene. This unique village has the ambiance of a lovely little beach town, complete with a sweet little chapel, homes with picket fences and all roads leading to the quiet protected beach. Within the community, a tiny “downtown” street offers visitors shops, wine bar and coffee shop. Wedding guests need never leave the property, with homes and cottages available to rent, as well as having the newly opened Carillon Beach Inn, which is a 70-room suite hotel. This second home community is unique to the beach with its gated community on the south (beach) side of Highway 98 and a manned security gate 24/7 (which does not permit drive in access to the general public). Of the 270 homes, less then half of the owners rent. It is the perfect spot for a perfect wedding In 2005, the Homeowners Association of Carillon Beach community decided to establish a wedding program. Their key goal being, to offer the amenities of the secluded beachfront community to brides while maintaining strict property rules of operation. This allows events at Carillon Beach community to coexist with homeowners and visitors alike. Homeowner and professional wedding planner, Victoria Volpone, was contracted by the community
Carillon Weddi ngs beautiful, classy, yet unique…
to set up and manage Carillon Weddings, which has been in operation since December 2005. Since that time, they have been offering venues of the beach, The Meeting House Chapel & Village and tented receptions at the Bellview Park greens. Within a short time, this small company began to attract attention through appearances in area magazines, which displayed pictures of their unique property. That quickly put them in high demand with more and more brides that wanted to secure a date for their wedding. Carillon Weddings managed to book around 20 events within their first year of 2006. Within this same short period of time, Carillon Weddings was voted “best of ” by The Knot Brides (and has been each year since). Hosting only one wedding ceremony and reception a day, Carillon Weddings soon became the attention of brides who were looking for a beach venue that was beautiful, classy yet unique. What is the difference that a bride receives with Carillon Weddings than with any other? In one word? SERVICE. The special bride will feel confident knowing that her wedding is in professional and capable hands through Director and ABC Professional, Victoria Volpone and her staff. Victoria explains, “When we put the program 70 • EMERALD COAST BRIDES www.EmeraldCoastBrides.com
together, our goal is to give our brides a beautiful venue, and the kind of personal service that would make the planning process as stress free as possible.” Victoria and her team of specialists have managed to make each brides vision a reality while creating weddings that are unique, personal and fabulous! In group effort, the planner, florist and caterer custom design each individual wedding. The only consistency with every wedding is well planning and flawless execution. As each year passes, Carillon Weddings continue to refine their vendor list and by 2009, many of the vendors will be exclusive. Carillon Weddings originally started offering their clients a lot more choices, but have gradually refined it to the highest quality of vendors. Although this has made it more difficult for some brides, due to the cost of the average wedding being in the high-end category, they have found that the events run much smoother. In addition, they find that the bride’s prefer to deal with only a few professionals versus dealing with several. They decided early on, not to offer packages or try to be everything to every bride. Instead, they focus on the quality of each event, not on volume. The services that Carillon Weddings offer include planning other wedding events such as, rehearsal dinners and luncheons, help with invitations, accommodations and other needed services. Carillon Weddings has a comprised list of vendors that each bride is required to use. Key vendors that make up the Carillon team were gathered not only for their talent, but also for their attitude. These teams of experts include the #1 rated Townsend Catering Company; noted floral designer Christina Springfield, of Nouveau Floral and
Event Designs; a team of classical musicians, Wedding Music Plus; and a group of some of the best photographers in Florida, which include nationally featured artists Paul and Mecheal Johnson. “A wedding has so many parts, but in order for it to be cohesive, all of the parts need to be in harmony and work together. For the event to go smoothly, there can only be one coordinator, and that is me. For an event to be flawless, planning and communication is the key,” says Victoria. That is why she surrounds herself with people that love what they do and approach each wedding with creative enthusiasm. Furthermore, Victoria says, “It is our privilege to be entrusted by the bride and groom with this special day. We each take this responsibility very seriously. I trust my vendors implicitly and they in turn trust me. They are fellow professionals, as well as friends and our work environment is cooperative, respectful and fun. I believe the brides can feel that, and it makes them comfortable and confident. They know that we are all going to go above and beyond for them.” Most satisfying to Victoria, is the number of brides who have found Carillon through word of mouth. “There is no greater compliment to me, then when a bride says she was recommended by a friend. A happy bride is worth much more then any amount of advertising!” says Volpone. Look no further than Carillon Weddings for a beautifully unique, classy and memorable wedding. Brides are encouraged to peruse the easily navigated and informative website, at www.carillonweddings.com, which includes venue rates and an online calendar, or may contact Victoria Volpone @ 850 230-9255. •

Courtney McKay and Clint Whitfield were married on October 18, 2008 in Lynn Haven, Florida.
T
Courtney & Clint Whitfield
he couple first met in October 2006 at the Health Plex gym in Panama City. They both visited the gym almost daily. However, it was a classic case of being at the right place at the right time! Although they had never run into each other before, they finally encountered and they immediately took notice of each other. Courtney was wrapping up her work out when Clint walked over to use a nearby machine. Courtney managed to strike up a conversation about sports and they both sat and talked for an hour. They exchanged phone numbers and went out the next night. The rest is history.
ended up at the very spot where he first declared his love for her. It was a small section of bay front beach on Beach Drive in Panama City. They walked down to the water, took a few steps along the beach and within seconds Clint dropped to his knees and proposed.
The couple became engaged in March of 2008. Clint drove Courtney on a “spontaneous” afternoon drive that

Wedding festivities were kicked off on the Thursday before the wedding. Friends and family arrived in town early to gather for a casual meet and greet dinner, hosted at the home of the bride’s parents, David and Diane McKay.

Village in St. Andrews. Guests enjoyed a photomontage of the bride and groom, produced by videographer Joanna Banks-Morgan of Diva Productions. The video highlighted Courtney and Clint from birth until the time they met one another. Their wedding day was magical with gorgeous weather, great friends and many laughs! They welcomed approximately 150 guests to the sunset ceremony, which took place on the Panama Country Club lawn. The Celebration Place provided rentals for the ceremony and reception. Native and exotic flowers and palms decorated the waterfront ceremony, along with several large urns holding arrangements of various vibrant flowers and plants, all created by florist Robin Buckner. The aisle led to a large, moss covered oak tree that stood at the water’s edge and adorned several, six-inch crystals that hung at various lengths. A hand painted wooded monogram of the couple’s initials were strung from an adjacent oak tree and were accented with ribbons and crystals. The processional music selected was “Legends of the Fall” theme by James Horner, a favorite movie of the bride and groom. Once the bridal party was in place, a second song from the “Legends of the Fall” movie, The Wedding, began to play. The bride appeared on a second story balcony above the ceremony site. She descended a brick stairway and stopped at the landing to smile and wave to her groom and guests. Her father then greeted her at the bottom of the steps, and, as father and daughter walked down the flower-petal strewn aisle to the moving instrumental, guests and family. Clint stood to greet her with tear-filled eyes. Their Pastor, Nic Gibson, of Lynn Haven United Methodist Church, married them. The emotional ceremony was a perfect combination of their faith, love and sense of humor as Courtney joked “It’s never coming off!” as she had to force Clint’s wedding band over his knuckles. They celebrated their marriage with a laugh and a kiss and danced down the aisle to their recessional song, “I Got You” by James Brown. The wedding party followed suite – raising their arms in celebration, dancing and laughing down the aisle as well. The bride wore a Winnie Couture bias-cut, ivory, silk charmeuse dress. Keeping with the sexy yet sophisticated color combination, the bride selected classic black dresses and suits accented with bold punches of color for her bridal party. A sentimental crystal butterfly adorned the bridal bouquet. In addition, a vintage rosary given to the bride years earlier, wrapped around the base of the bouquet, in honor of the bride’s Catholic mother.
74 • EMERALD COAST BRIDES www.EmeraldCoastBrides.com
The reception took place inside the main ballroom of the Country Club where the bride and groom were welcomed with cheers and took their first dance to “God Blessed the Broken Road” by Rascal Flats. As Clint dipped Courtney on the final note of their song, a photographer with Diva Productions captured the couple’s most favorite photo from their wedding. DJ, Mike Peters, played great music for a fun night of dancing. Guests then enjoyed an exquisite dinner catered by Vittles Companies. After toasts by the Best Man and Matron of Honor, the couple then cut the three-tiered wedding cake and baseball themed groom’s cake, both cakes compliments of lifelong family friend and cake baker, Marjorie Shields.
The couple left the reception to their overly decorated exit vehicle, a Mercedes owned by the bride’s mother, which was ambushed by the groomsmen with plenty of paint, prophylactic streamers and colorful lettering that spelled out obnoxious groomsmen humor. It kept the couple in laughs the whole way to their hotel! The couple decided on a New England style honeymoon where they visited six states in eight days. They flew to Boston, rented a car and hit the road. They ate lobster in Maine, stayed at the famous Mt. Washington Hotel in New Hampshire, drank beer from a local brewery in Vermont, toured the mansions of Newport, RI, spent two days sight seeing in Boston, and much more. The weather was incredible, the autumn leaves glowed and there were Dunkin Donuts on every corner, truly the best vacation that the couple had ever taken hands down! The couple now happily resides in Lynn Haven, Florida. •

An amazing boy band that everyone use to adore? If so, bring it and have some fun reliving the past en route to your destination.
Workout Party/Spa Treat
Having a yoga or pilates-inspired party is a great way to relax and have a workout before your big day. Several yoga studios offer special private group classes. If you are looking for a spicier workout alternative, have you and your girlfriends attend a “Stripper Workout”
class. It can be a fun, new experience for all, and you might even pick up some tips for the wedding night. Ha!! After all the exercising, treat yourselves to a spa day as a reward. Several spas offer special girls packages, especially for brides-to-be. If most of your bridesmaids are with you, then having a mani-pedi is a great way to indulge them and make sure all the girls match for the big day.
Slumber Party
Forget going out. If you are on a budget, a slumber party is a fun way to spend time with your friends and act like a kid again (and this time, your parents won’t be there to tell you when to go to bed). For a fun wedding theme, rent movies like Father of the Bride, The Wedding Planner, and 27 Dresses and pop some popcorn. If you are not into wedding-themed movies, try horror instead and watch to see who gets scared first. Give each other facials and pedicures or even play party games, like truth or dare. Several web sites online can give you ideas for games to play at bachelorette parties. You can even be a kid again and flirt with the pizza delivery boy or prank-call old friends continued next page

ForHim from high school. If you want to have an upscale slumber party, get a suite at a swanky hotel.
Dinner Party
Dinner parties are a classy, low-key alternative to a night of bar hopping. It’s also a great alternative for a second wedding. To make the evening fun and interactive, have a fondue party, using either cheese or chocolate. It will be a nice treat for your friends, and an interesting change from the usual dinner cuisine. To liven up the evening, invite a psychic over to give fortunes or read tarot cards. Another good option is too arrange to have either a wine or tequila tasting in your home.

It’s time to focus on the groom for once. That’s right, it’s time to talk about bachelor parties. No, I’m not talking about smoky strip clubs that smell like cheap beer and old sweat. I’m talking about the bachelor boys getaway, or as the travel industry now calls it, “The Mancation.” Here are some great ideas that you can “mention” to your fiancé and his friends when they start talking about bachelor party.
Outdoor Adventures
Nothing says male bonding like the outdoors. If the groom enjoys relaxing in the sun, then a laid-back fishing or camping trip might be the answer. If your fiancé prefers more adventurous activities, then kayaking or hang-gliding is likely to satisfy his need for adrenaline. Several tourism boards and travel agencies now offer packages that will make the planning a breeze (because you
already have enough to plan with the wedding). If you are on a budget, plan on having the guys camp out instead of staying at a hotel. Instead of packing hot dogs, make the trip upscale by packing some steaks or a nice bottle of scotch to make it extra special.
Sports Outing
If your fiancée lives for the links, coordinate a guy’s golf weekend at a nearby resort. Several resorts have packages that combine unlimited golf with luxury accommodations, spa time, and a box of cigars to enjoy in the lounge. If you want to find out which golf resorts offer special guys packages, check out the national PGA website at www.pganational.com for information. If golf isn’t his sport, plan a trip for him and his friends to see their favorite sports team. Make the trip memorable by making sure they sit up close for all the action.
Boys in the Big City If your man loves the bright lights and excitement of a big city, a weekend living it up will be exciting. More and more bachelors are choosing Las Vegas as a prime location for a party. But, if you are on a budget (or if you don’t like the idea of your man spending time in Sin City) there are plenty of exciting cities closer to home. New Orleans, Miami, and Atlanta are great places for a guys getaway. Choose a trendy boutique hotel and find a local cigar bar or upscale billiards room where they can spend some quality guy time. If you plan a trip to New Orleans, gambling on a riverboat is a good compromise to the slots of Vegas. •

Geniene & Patrick Stage
he couple first met in the summer of 2004. Patrick was working in a building adjacent to where Geniene worked. After passing by her office and glancing at her, the two were later introduced to each other and the first date soon followed. The engagement was a complete surprise, filled with screams and cheers. At Geniene’s 10-year high school reunion, Patrick arranged for her name to be called as though she had won a door prize from the class alumni. He also had her family members waiting outside to sneak in through a side entrance. As Geniene walked up in front of all of her class, believing that she had won a digital camera, Patrick ran around through the side entrance door of the stage and slid across the dance floor on his knees holding the ring. Geniene turned around and started screaming as the entire class erupted in cheers.
The wedding was a 2-day event at the Village of Baytowne Warf Resort. Many friends and family members traveled from South Louisiana, central Florida, Texas, Colorado, Maryland and Arizona for the weekend event. The wedding was held on a 4-hour private charter aboard the Solaris Yacht. Over 90 family and close friends were aboard as the Solaris pulled from the dock just after 5 pm. A beautiful sunset began to take place while the ceremony was actually circled by dolphins in the middle of the bay. The top deck of the Solaris Yacht was the perfect setting that a bride and groom could ever wish for. Captain Steve Isaacs, in full Captains attire, presided over the ceremony. The bride wore a gown designed by Mon Cheri, an ivory strapless tulle and lace modified mermaid gown with chapel length train. The

veil was very simple with beaded trim. The bride purchased her dress and veil at Simply Elegant located in Fort Walton Beach, FL where alterations were made to perfection. The wedding party included the maid of honor, Adrianne Speer, flower girl, Georgie Jean Speer and best man, Triston. Patti Bilbo from “Perfect Day” developed the bride’s bouquet to include a dozen white roses wrapped in satin at the stem and Swarovski crystals placed in the center of each rose. Three photographers from Pure 7 Studios captured the evening’s event. Geniene’s grandparents were also celebrating there 60th wedding anniversary with a few additional guests sharing there anniversary that night as well. The reception immediately followed the ceremony aboard the Solaris Yacht, as the entire boat was a party. The guests enjoyed a candle lit dinner including a wonderful buffet and drinks from the bar poured for four straight hours. Southern Styles Dessert made the wedding cake with chocolate and raspberry filling and tiny Fleur de Lis decorating the side of the second tier. Soft green satin ribbon wrapped the base, to match the wedding colors. The top tier had the letter “S” in Swarovski Crystal. The grooms cake was Oreo filling with colorful aqua blue icing with a beautiful hand blown glass sculpture of a Dorado fish (by Adam Kaser), which was propped up for display and was also a wedding present to the groom from the bride. The couple’s first dance was “Come Away with me” by Norah Jones. A live band, Harmony, played and sang music all evening. Ethan Owens, nephew of the bride and groom, performed a special electric guitar solo for the audience of “On the Coast of Somewhere Beautiful” by Kenny Chesney. The bride and groom were whisked down the dock of the Solaris, to a golf cart that took them directly to John Werners Famous Door, located in Baytowne Wharf, for an after party with family and friends that lasted until lights out. Patrick had a business trip to London scheduled 2 weeks after the wedding weekend. Therefore, Geniene joined him on his business trip and they both spent 7 days in England as an initial honeymoon. The real honeymoon will take place this summer in the Caribbean.
