Welcome to our first newsletter of 2018 Welcome to our newsletter and the start of our tenth anniversary celebrations! Since 2008 Bluebell Wood has supported over 500 children with life-shortening and life-threatening conditions across South Yorkshire, North Notts, North Derbyshire and parts of North Lincolnshire. Our hospice is a home from home for families facing the toughest of times, with our comfy lounge, home-cooked food, and beautiful gardens. There’s also plenty of fun activities for families to create special memories together, including soft play, sensory activities, play and music therapy, and much more. We haven’t always had the fantastic facilities that we have now though. When I joined Bluebell Wood as a Community Fundraiser in 2002, the hospice itself was still a dream, and our team of incredible staff and volunteers worked from donated office space in Doncaster to help raise the funds we needed to make that dream a reality. Finally, after years of marathons, car-boot sales, and parachute jumps, and lots of other fun fundraising activities, we raised the £4.7 million we needed to start construction in 2004, officially opening our doors to our first family on September 18th 2008. Since then Bluebell Wood has grown from strength to strength, as we’ve added more spaces for activity and therapy sessions, and extended our services to help our families even more. Over the years, I have got to know a lot of the families that use our services, and I’m so proud that we’ve been able to offer so many special experiences and help create some wonderful memories. All of this wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts of fantastic supporters like you. From celebrity visits; support from local businesses and community groups; and amazing help from our volunteers, it has been incredible to see people come together to support the hospice and help us grow. I am really looking forward to all the events and activities we have planned for 2018, and I can’t wait to share these moments with you. Thank you all so much, and here’s to the next ten years!
Helen Mower, Head of Fundraising
Spring sorted There are so many ways you can support us this Spring. Here are just a few ideas to kick-start your fundraising this season:
It’s time for a spring clean! You’ll get great satisfaction from cleaning your house top-to-bottom this season if you answer our spring clean call! We’re asking people to sort through their clothes, books and toys, and donate their unwanted items to their nearest Bluebell Wood shop (which you can find by visiting www.bluebellwood.org/shops). Don’t forget, if you have more than eight bags to donate, give us a call on 01909 517 360 and we can pick them up!
Easter boxes You could help Bluebell Wood families have fun with glitter, glue and paint by saving your spare change in one of our Egg-tastic Easter boxes. Many children at Bluebell Wood can’t eat chocolate, so we’re asking people to help fund our craft activities rather than donate an Easter Egg. Those coins can add up to the cost of a chocolate egg and could help a child show their creative side, from building an Easter basket to shaping a bunny bookmark. Call 01909 517 365 to order your box, or send us a message on Facebook!
Amazon wishlist If you’d like to give a gift you know a Bluebell Wood family will love this Easter, why not take a look at our wish list on Amazon? Our Care Team has created the list after talking to our children and families about what they love doing most at Bluebell Wood. This list gives ideas for a wide range of crafts and sensory activities as well as games our young people can enjoy. To buy a gift from Amazon for Bluebell Wood just visit www.bluebellwood.org/wishlist.
Fancy an adventure in 2018? A Bluebell Wood Skydive or Wing Walk could be one of the most exciting things you’ll ever do. For those who’ve taken to the skies it’s often been the biggest thrill of their lives, and a great way to raise vital funds for their local children’s hospice. Read on to find out about Naz’s and Claire’s adrenaline-filled experiences (and see how you can get involved)!
Naz Makram jumped out of a plane in 2017, tackling a height of 15,000 feet and freefall speeds of up to 120mph, in memory of his much- loved niece Zainab Latif. Zainab passed away in 2010 at the age of seven after being diagnosed with Congenital Merosin Deficient Muscular Dystrophy at just six months old. Her mum Salma said: “Zainab was completely dependent on me for all her care needs. In 2008 I went to visit Bluebell Wood and I loved what I saw. “Zainab called Bluebell Wood her holiday home. It gave her independence, and she felt part of the family there, as we all did. I have nothing but happy memories of Bluebell Wood and I will never forget how happy they made my Zainab. They are truly amazing.” Naz said: “Zainab was a lovely child and I really wanted to do something in her memory. Two of our sisters have already skydived for Bluebell Wood, so it was definitely my turn. It was an excellent experience; I would 100% do it again.”
In the past year, Claire Malcolmson has swum 50 lengths, walked across 15ft of hot coals, and even flown 130mph at our Wing Walk, all in memory of her son, Joe. Mr Joe was eight years old when he passed away at home in 2015. He had an undiagnosed neurological syndrome and a range of complex medical conditions, which meant he was blind, never slept well, needed medication every three hours and had sleep apnoea. Claire said, “The Care Team were fantastic at creating wonderful memories; Joe didn’t always understand things, but he knew when a voice was angry or happy and loving too. At Bluebell Wood he was always surrounded by love.” “He enjoyed some precious times at Bluebell Wood, and I wanted to do whatever I could to honour his memory and give something back to a charity that is always there for families in their hour of need.” She said, “The Wing Walk was amazing. I held my arms above my head and touched the clouds; I’m sure I touched Mr Joe’s cloud. I was aching the next day, but it was so worth it.”
Do you dare take on our Wing walk or tandem Skydive? You can skydive with us on Sunday 15th April and Sunday 9th September, or touch the sky in our Wing Walk on Saturday 21st July. If you want to take the plunge please call 01909 517 365 or email eventsteam@bluebellwood.org to sign up now.
Fantastic Fundraising

Without the incredible support of our corporate and local communities we just wouldn’t be able to help as many families as we do. Here are just some of the fundraisers who supported us during 2017.

We received an amazing grant of £15,495 from The Vinci Foundation. This money will be spent on a mobility vehicle, which will be used to pick up families who have difficulty getting to the hospice. It will also be used to when we take our children, young adults and sibling group on exciting days out, which will be a huge help!
‘Wheel Do It Social Cycling’ are an incredible group of cyclists who were a huge help to us during our Pedal to Poolsbrook sponsored bike ride in 2017. They cycled the 35K course (twice!) to put up and collect our banners and signs to advertise the event and directed bikers on the day. They also raised a brilliant total of £1898.50 after cycling from Sheffield to Skegness and back. Thank you so much for your support! Northern Engineering Sheffield have been fantastic fundraisers this year. They have conquered the Three Peaks Challenge, held a sponsored car wash for staff members, as well as getting involved in our Christmas Jumper Day and so much more. Their support is amazing and we can’t wait to see what they will do this year!

Get to know our Drivers Have you ever wanted to know a little more about the friendly faces who pick up your generous donations every day, rain or shine? Tony and Lance are our dedicated Drivers, and keep our shops stocked by collecting donations from across our catchment area. Their work takes them from supporters’ homes to local schools and businesses, picking up donations and delivering them to our shops or to our hospice to sell on Ebay. They also take collections at our monthly ‘Bag it For Bluebell’ days at Lakeside Village and Brinsworth Community Centre. Lance has been at Bluebell Wood since 2009 and really enjoys his job. He said, “My favourite thing about my job is getting to know the people who are supporting us. One day I might get to meet someone who is clearing out their loft for us, or I could be helping local school children load their donation bags into our vans.”

A fond farewell We were saddened to hear that Howard Schofield, one of the founder trustees here at Bluebell Wood, passed away suddenly in November. Although Howard had retired as a trustee he was still a keen supporter and advocate for Bluebell Wood, with a real passion to do the very best for every child and family who needs us. Former Chair of the board, John Holt, and current trustee Anne Fowlie attended the funeral with Head of Fundraising, Helen Mower. Anne said, “Howard will be fondly remembered for his passion and dedication to Bluebell Wood. Over the years he served many roles including fundraiser, company secretary and insurance advisor, and he was a real rock.” Helen added, “Howard was such a lovely man with a real warmth and passion for the hospice and everything we do. He continued to be a dedicated supporter even after he retired as a trustee, and he will be missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with his friends and family.”
e d o a f dedication c e d A
In the decade since Bluebell Wood first opened, we’ve had the support of hundreds of amazing individuals, without whom we simply couldn’t have done what we have. Many loyal volunteers have helped at our hospice, shops and events, every single year for those ten years. Here are four of these inspiring individuals:
Pauline Higbid has helped out at our Sheffield shop every Tuesday for ten years, come rain or shine. She’s also raised over £20,000 for Bluebell Wood since she attended our first turf cutting in 2005. Pauline said: “When I retired I wanted something to keep me busy. I know the marvellous things hospices can achieve and what a lovely atmosphere they create, so I joined the Bluebell Wood support group in Dore. I ran my own annual ‘open garden’ and held ten of these with the help of my late husband and friends. “At the shop I enjoy being on the till, sorting stock or doing whatever I’m asked to. With volunteering there’s always something to do. I’ve shaken buckets at Hillsborough and I love selling. Bluebell Wood is such a wonderful place to raise money for. It must be such a haven for families.” For Steve Knight and his wife Jane, our ten-year anniversary also marks ten years since their daughter Emma passed away at just 13 years old. Steve, Jane and their daughter Katie have raised over £60,000 for Bluebell Wood. Diagnosed with a brain tumour, Emma was cared for at home by Bluebell Wood and after she passed away, her family were the first to stay in our Forget-me-Not end of life suite. This gave her friends and family time to say goodbye. Since then, Steve has volunteered in our gardens and organises at least two fundraising events each year, including evenings at Beighton Miners’ Welfare and an ABBA tribute night. He said: “Through the devastation of losing Emma, we’ve met some brilliant families and experienced some fantastic generosity. We want to raise £10,000 in 2018 because it’s such an important anniversary.”

Ten reasons to volunteer

A talk by our Head f Fundraising, Helen Mower, inspired Joy ramley to volunteer for luebell Wood in our earliest ays. As a member of global volunteer movement oroptimist International, Joy believes in giving back to the ommunity. Joy was also a director of mental health services nd understands the need for respite and the right care nvironment for young people.
oy said: “I believed I could support Bluebell Wood by giving alks on this wonderful charity to others. I’ve spoken at Mother’s Union meetings, Women’s Institutes and community roups all around North Derbyshire, and also held coffee mornings to raise money as well as awareness.
see volunteering as a service and a passion, and it’s been my sheer delight, pleasure and privilege to represent Bluebell Wood.”
John Bower first heard out Bluebell Wood in 2004 m Worksop Golf Club’s men’s captain when he s also a captain. That year club started fundraising for ebell Wood, to help us get the pice opened.
n said: “I was then invited to a talk by en Mower where she mentioned support groups. The rksop Support Group started in 2005 and I chaired it m then until recently. We’ve organised quizzes, fashion ws, a soiree at Thoresby House, bowling and frog ng.”
n was also a Bluebell Wood trustee from 2008 until 2 when he found out he had a heart condition and had low down; “I got to know Bluebell Wood very well and realised just what a worthwhile charity it is.”

Leighton’s story 11-year-old Leighton always has a smile on his face, especially when he gets to spend time at Bluebell Wood with his brothers, Carson and Leo. Mum and dad, Kerry and Steven, share his story: Kerry said, “Ever since he was little, we thought Leighton was a little stiff and not very flexible; we used to joke that he was just like his dad. But then we started noticing that he couldn’t ride his bike, and he would walk really slow and drag his feet when we went for walks. He never really walked upstairs; he always crawled up like a toddler, that’s when we knew something wasn’t quite right, and we started going back and forth to the doctors. The doctors even checked his hips to see if he had a hip displacement. We didn’t realise at the time, but these were tell-tale signs of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.” Leighton was finally given a diagnosis when he was five and a half. We visited the hospital and they sent him for a blood test on the Friday, and the next day the hospital rang to arrange another blood test. The following week his mum and dad were told the devastating news about his condition. Steven said, “The day we actually got the diagnosis is a blur. I remember watching the doctor’s mouth move, but not hearing anything. We had been worried about Leighton for a long time, but we hadn’t expected that.” Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a muscle wasting disease, which was caused by a rare mutation in the X-chromosome of Leighton’s DNA. Steven explained, “It’s almost like having a car without shock absorbers. Just simple things like reaching for objects can be a real challenge because there is nothing to soften the impact. His condition affects every muscle in his body; his heart, his lungs, everything. It means that just breathing or his heart beating is causing scarring.” Kerry added, “Things like getting dressed can be a real struggle for Leighton, so I have to do that for him. He can’t do stairs either, so we’ve moved his bedroom and bathroom downstairs to make it easier for him. Willow, our Border Terrier, sleeps with him at night and she’s always there for company. He’s happy and that’s all that matters.” Kerry and Steven heard about Bluebell Wood when Leighton was diagnosed, but at first they were worried about what it would be like. It wasn’t until Leighton was nine that they decided to take that next step and visit the hospice for the first time.Steven said, “I wasn’t sure at first, I was expecting it to be like a hospital with children attached to machines, but it’s not like that at all. You’re made to feel so welcome – there’s a big sense of belonging and fun. Looking back, we should have come earlier!” From pantos and painting sessions to special visits from our local football teams, Leighton and his brothers love all the fun activities and events at Bluebell Wood. Kerry said, “The boys love coming here, and I think it’s really good for them. Leo goes to the sibling group and he really enjoys it. Sometimes it can be difficult for him when the focus is on Leighton so the group is great because it’s something that is all about him.”
Kerry and Steven also enjoy getting to know other parents who are going through the same things that they are, and they see one of our Counsellors at the hospice. Kerry said, “It’s so nice to talk to other families; we’re all facing similar challenges, and it’s fantastic to get things off your chest when times are tough. Families really do come together. “The counselling sessions help us a lot too. We got to see the Counsellor straight away – there wasn’t any waiting around. There’ve been times at other places when we’ve been on a waiting list, but not here. It was what we needed, at a time when we needed it most. “Everyone here goes the extra mile and absolutely nothing is too much trouble. The counselling, the fun times like pantos and all the events; there really is no end to their support. Bluebell Wood is always trying to do something for families, and helps us have a normal, happy life.”
1 pounds for 1 years Since we opened our doors in 2008, we’ve helped over 500 families when they needed us most. But our life-changing care doesn’t stop now. Over the next ten years we want to reach even more families, and show them all the fantastic things we can offer. That’s why we’re asking you to donate just £10, to help us make our vision for the next decade a reality.
