Merry Christmas from the Barrett family Bluebell Wood is a very special place for our family. In December 2016 we thought we’d be spending our last Christmas with our, then, seven-month old son, Harrison, so we spent it together at the hospice, making some wonderful memories. When we found out we were expecting Harrison, we were over the moon, but at our 20-week pregnancy scan we found out he had clubfoot. This led to lots of other tests, which came back clear. When Harrison was born in May 2016 he was diagnosed with congenital myotonic dystrophy and he couldn’t breathe or move without help. He was moved from the maternity ward to the children’s hospital, where he had to have several operations. That December, we were told that he would need end-of-life care. That’s when the doctors told us about Bluebell Wood, and we decided to have a look around. We got a good feel for the place straight away; everything - from the nurses’ station to the family rooms - felt like a home from home. On Christmas Eve we had to decide whether to stay in hospital or go to Bluebell Wood. Isla, Harrison’s sister, was only six, and we wanted her to have as good a Christmas as possible, so we chose Bluebell Wood. It was such a relaxing experience. There were always people to talk to, and not having to cook, or even think about our next meal, was great. Everyone at Bluebell Wood made Christmas really special for all of us, but particularly for Isla, who didn’t really understand how poorly Harrison was. The staff were really good with her. When we opened our bedroom door on Christmas morning there was snow on the floor, Santa footprints, crunched up carrot from the reindeers and reindeer dust on Harrison’s floor. We had Christmas dinner with all the trimmings with Harrison sitting in a pod at the table with us. It was much more laid back than it would have been at home. We stayed for five nights and our family and friends were able to call in and
see us whenever they wanted, which was lovely. Harrison started to pick up in the New Year and in March he was taken off end-of-life care and we were able to care for him at home. We’ve had a lot of training so that we can give him the best possible care, but sometimes we need extra support and this is when Bluebell Wood is a big help. Bluebell Wood’s doctor, Fiona, comes out to see us when we need support. Nowadays we come to Bluebell Wood so that Harrison can use the sensory toys and equipment we can’t easily find anywhere else. Being here also gives us a chance to play with Harrison, enjoy a freshly cooked lunch and meet up with other families, knowing he’s in a safe environment. It’s really nice knowing we’re all in a similar boat, and that Isla can spend time with other brothers and sisters like her. Harrison has improved a lot since we visited Bluebell Wood at Christmas - he doesn’t need oxygen at the moment and he can stand using aids at home - but whatever happens, knowing Bluebell Wood is there for us makes a big difference. Merry Christmas, Christy and Gavin Barrett
Your support helps children and young adults like Harrison whose lives are just too short. We currently support around 290 families across South Yorkshire, North Notts, North Derbyshire and parts of North Lincolnshire. Thanks to your support, these families can make magical memories with their child, whether they have days, weeks or longer together.
Fantastic Fundraising Your super support helps children and families at the toughest of times. Here are just some of the fundraisers who have supported us during the last six months. We’re so incredibly proud to have people like you on Team Bluebell!
A £100,000 knockout The White Collar Boxing club have been supporting Bluebell Wood since 2016, and have now raised over £100,000. The competitors train for weeks for their bouts, with each boxer raising sponsorship to tot up such a terrific total.
Just keep swimming! Deborah Yule Swim School have gone to great lengths to fundraise for us this year. The students and teachers held a sponsored swim throughout April, raising £11,000 through their aquatic efforts. This means when children and families come to stay at Bluebell Wood, they could spend time splashing around in our very own spa pool.
You shop, Amazon gives... If you like nothing more than a quick browse on the bus or scrolling through sales on the sofa then why not become one of our star supporters the easy way by shopping with Amazon Smile? When you buy eligible products, Amazon will donate 0.5% of the net purchase price to us. Now isn’t that a reason to smile? Visit www.smile.amazon.co.uk and add Amazon Smile to your account to get started.
Braving the shave! Shaving your head might sound like a scary idea, but not for supporters Dougie Flockhart and Jess Green. Dougie, the Doncaster Knights leading point scorer, raised an outstanding £7010 after saying goodbye to his locks, after being inspired to fundraise by his little sister, who spent time in hospital with a suspected brain tumour. She was later diagnosed with a cavernoma, and after a long recovery, she raised money and donated her hair to charity, with Dougie pledging to do the same. Lincoln support worker, Jess, decided to fundraise for Bluebell Wood in memory of her boyfriend’s sister, Georgia, who sadly passed away at the hospice in 2011. Jess knew how much Bluebell Wood had helped Georgia’s family during an incredibly tough time, so she took on a sponsored head shave and raised over £1,000!
Retford tractors ‘rally up’ £1,275 An annual tractor rally in Askham near Retford has raised an impressive £1,257 for us this year. Organised by the Bloom family, with the support of Jones & Co Solicitors and Ballards Removals, Storage and Van Hire, all proceeds from the day will help children and young adults make the most of every moment. Melanie Rose, one of our Community Fundraisers, said: “It was a great event to be part of, with so many tractors joining the road-run around Askham. Thank you to the Bloom family for continuing to support the families we care for.”

BBC Radio Sheffield helped raise a phenomenal £450,000 through a massive on-air appeal back in 2002. The fundraiser saw reporters stage a pantomime, play basketball and even deliver parcels of love on Valentine's Day, all to help us build the hospice, and make our dream a reality.
Months before they came to Bluebell Wood for end of life care, Will told us he’d always wanted to take his son, William, to the beach, so we made a mini one just for them at the hospice.

Meet Don
Greeting visitors at Bluebell Wood’s events is one of many things Don Featherstone enjoys about volunteering. Don, who lives in Rotherham, became a Bluebell Wood volunteer seven years ago after retiring from his job as a contract control manager. He decided it would be good to give something back and having heard a lot about Bluebell Wood, he came to take a look round. Don said: “I had a tour, met Helen, the Head of Fundraising, and the rest is history. I didn’t have a specific role in mind - I wanted to do lots of different things, like bucket collecting and picking up cheques. Whatever I could do, I’d do it. “I’ve always really enjoyed the Birthday Bash in September. I’ll arrive at 8.30am and set up the stalls. Then I go and help look after the car parking with the police cadets. “People can think that hospices are gloomy and sad, but events like our Birthday Bash show that they aren’t. Bluebell Wood is a happy place for families and it’s great when I hear people returning to the car park at the end of the day saying how wonderful it is. “One of the best things about volunteering is the people, and although I’ve only met a few families, the ones I’ve met have been amazing. Being there and watching what the team does is a privilege. Being able to do something to help people, and do my bit to help raise the funds Bluebell Wood needs makes volunteering more than worthwhile.” Want to be like Don and do something you love for a good cause? Call our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Terry Lowell, on 01909 517 360 to find out about our volunteering opportunities.
A spotlight on... Alex Gibbons
Estate planner Alex Gibbons became an ambassador for Bluebell Wood last year. He works at Buchanan & Co Solicitors, who have taken part in Bluebell Wood’s ‘Make a Will’ months over the past few years, where they donate the fee from their Will writing service to the hospice. As an ambassador, Alex enjoys telling potential new supporters about the hospice, and encouraging people to volunteer their time and skills.
Alex said: “When I came to look around the hospice, I realised what a fabulous organisation it is. I was honoured by the invitation to become an ambassador. “One of the highlights so far has been meeting a family who visits the hospice and starting to understand the struggles they face. “I did a presentation at the Royal Mail fundraising evening in Sheffield recently and met some seriously dedicated Bluebell Wood supporters. It’s marvellous to see what they get up to, all to help local children get the care they need. “As part of our fundraising for the year Buchanan and Co Solicitors will be holding an auction for a 2019 golf day for 24 people. Each team of four balls will have a local celebrity, predominantly from the sporting world, playing alongside them. We will be opening the bidding at Bluebell Wood’s Birthday Ball on 29th September, with a view to announcing the successful bidders early next year. We will be working very closely with Bluebell Wood’s fundraising team to organise the event and have already had some great support from other local businesses who want to offer their services for the event.” “We will also be running another ‘Make a Will’ month - from Bluebell Wood’s Birthday Ball through to the end of October - to raise even more money to support children and young adults going through the toughest of times.”
Corporate champions From sponsoring our Care Team to taking part in our Master Cutler’s Challenge, incredible corporate supporters like you really do make all the difference to local families. Here’s what Team Bluebell have been getting up to since our last update.
Reaching for the stars
Bluebell Wood on the road
Swirling galaxies and summer skies are now all part of the overhead experience for families at the hospice, thanks to our new, colourful ceiling tiles. We’d like to say a huge thank you to Eaton Production for a fantastic grant of £7,461, as well as Yessselectrical who installed the tiles. Sandra, Isabella’s mum, said “The tiles are so bright and colourful. When Izzy first came to the hospice after they’d been fitted she couldn’t stop looking at them. It’s lovely to see something so different; we really love the tile with all the balloons on.”
This year, we’re wheel-y happy to have been given a brand new Toyota Aygo, free of charge for 12 months. We can’t thank Burrows Motor Company enough for their kind gesture, which will make it so much easier for our Care Team to visit children and families in their own homes, and for our fundraisers to stay in touch with supporters from across the region.
An update from our superhero supporters Over the last 7 months, 57 teams of Steel City Superheroes have competed with fellow businesses to turn a seed fund of £50 into as much money as possible for the hospice. Here are just some of the fantastic things they’ve been getting up to since then: 32 caped crusaders from Henry Boot, The Scarborough Group, Southern Grove Architects and Lambert Smith Hampton gathered at Bramall Lane in May to play in the Monaghans Charity Football Match. The thrilling match ended in a 2-2 draw, and raised a whopping £5142. Well done everyone! Both Master and Mistress Cutler rolled up their sleeves and helped out at an East Midlands Trains coffee and cake sale, which saw staff supply a range of delicious treats to commuters, raising an incredible £735.
Two incredible years of fundraising
Cranswick Foods champion volunteering
From an abseil down the central dome to a charity single by singer Kate Rusby, every penny raised in a two year partnership between Meadowhall and Bluebell Wood has now been counted, with the total confirmed as a stunning £128,000. Darren Pearce, Meadowhall’s Centre Director, who visited us to officially celebrate the final total, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that the incredible efforts of everyone at Meadowhall, our retailers, shoppers, partners and colleagues, have helped to raise this fantastic amount for Bluebell Wood. It’s hugely important to us to give something back to worthwhile causes across our region, and Bluebell Wood certainly fits the bill.”
From diving through inflatables at our It’s A Knockout to donating food for our Birthday Bash, over the last three years Cranswick Foods have gone above and beyond to support us. Not only have they raised over £9,000 through raffles, sweepstakes, and sponsorship, they’ve also donated their time to volunteer at the hospice once a month as well as at our events. We’ve been bowled over by their continued support, which has made a huge difference to the families who visit the hospice.
Thank you to our 365 Business Club members We started our 365 Business Club, as a way to encourage local, regional, and national businesses to come together to support families facing the toughest of times. We currently have 45 dedicated members, who have gone above and beyond to raise money for the hospice, by taking part in our events and raising awareness of the important work we do. If you know an organisation who would be interested in joining for just £1 a day, please call Rachael Dawes on 01909 517 367.
Monopoly challenge is a ‘win’ for Bluebell Wood Were you out in Sheffield on Thursday 19th July? If so, you might have seen teams racing to complete a life-sized Monopoly board, organised by DLA Piper as part of the Master Cutler’s challenge. 14 teams took part in the game across the city’s steets, rolling dice and answering clues, to be in with a chance of winning the coveted champions trophy. The event raised over £5,000 for the hospice, which will make a huge difference to the families we support.
A moment with mum
Sara, who lives in Sheffield, started visiting Bluebell Wood in 2012 when her daughter, Sienna, was just one year old. She sat down with us to tell us about a day in her life, and talk about how you’ve helped us support her whole family: “Sienna was born prematurely at 34 weeks in April 2011 and she was rushed to the Special Baby Care Unit at Jessops. After seven days we came home, but she stopped breathing and went blue, and we went back to the hospital. It was incredibly scary. “Sienna had some tests, and an operation. After this, we found out she had bilateral vocal cord palsy, and needed to have a tube in to help her breathe, called a tracheostomy. She still wasn’t breathing very well, and we discovered she also had subglottal stenosis, which is narrowing of her airways. She was taken straight to the High Dependency Unit and was there for 14 months. “At the same time, my eldest daughter Cordelia was diagnosed with Autism. It was then that we visited Bluebell Wood for the first time. Once a month at weekends, we stayed at Bluebell Wood with Sienna and Cordelia, so the girls could bond. The lights and noise of the hospital were too much for Cordelia, so it was wonderful to be able to spend time peacefully at Bluebell Wood. The girls have a really strong bond; I think this is definitely down to the time they spent together at Bluebell Wood. “When Sienna was a baby, we were told she would never make a sound. One day when we were at Bluebell Wood, we heard an excited squeal from the trampoline, and when we rushed outside, it was Sienna! That shows just how much she loves it here. It’s the little things they do that make such a huge difference - like the hospice chef always preparing her favourite meal of sausage, chips and peas. He even learnt the sign language for sausage so that he could communicate easily with Sienna. ”At Bluebell Wood, the girls love the music room, ball pool and messy play. Sienna always feels at ease here. She had a difficult time when she started school, as all her friends can run, and don’t have a tracheostomy. Sienna also has a rare type of epilepsy, and has 72 seizures every 24 hours. This affects her mobility and she gets tired a lot. At Bluebell she meets other children like her, and doesn’t feel so different. “Bluebell Wood isn’t just brilliant fun for the girls - it’s fantastic for me too. At home, I often don’t get more than three hours sleep, and don’t eat until after 10pm. Just to have a hot meal made for me, a bath and a cup of tea means so much. To have someone take over Sienna’s medicine and care, just for a while, is so nice. It really is the difference between keeping my sanity and not. It’s like home from home but better.”
“Bluebell Wood is the difference between keeping my sanity and not. It’s like home from home but better.” - Sara, Sienna’s mum
Help make miles of smiles A few years ago, you raised over £6,500 by donating £1 for every mile between Bluebell Wood and Lapland (and back). Many of the children who visit the hospice can’t go to Lapland (it’s too cold and the medical equipment they need means they can’t travel) so your support meant families could experience a Winter Wonderland here at the hospice, full of snow, Christmas carols, and lots of mince pies! For our tenth anniversary could you go even further - a total of 2670 miles in fact - by raising enough money to bring Santa’s Workshop in the North Pole to the hospice? By donating just £1 for a mile, you can help us reach our target of £2,670, and create fun, festive experiences throughout December for the families we support, some of whom may be spending their last Christmas together. To donate, fill in the form on the next page, or visit our special BT My Donate Page at https://mydonate.bt.com/events/northpoleappeal. You can keep track of your progress by visiting our Facebook page (Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice), where we’ll be posting updates of your virtual journey to the North Pole.
