THIRD YEAR:
SALT RIVER - CAPE TOWN FINAL PROJECT ‘Urban-Timber Education Centre’ My major project sought to address the densification needs by introducing a new building technology that would be a sustainable alternative to our current methods. The idea is that the building can become a training facility for local craftsman to learn how to build bigger and bigger timber buildings; as well as for it to become a public hub of education, commerce and research. The building would facilitate public movement over the railway lines as well as market and workshop space. It showcases my ideas for the utilisation of the goods rail lines; the bridging of the rail divide; the growth of the new city out of the old; frame and infill; public and community integration.

THIRD YEAR:
SALT RIVER - CAPE TOWN DES BAKER
‘Future City’ Film and Poster Ndikwingcinga Zam, meaning ‘deep in my thoughts’, is set in Cape Town and depicts the current condition of our city through the narrative of an individual’s everyday life (bound by the ghosts of apartheid city planning, Cape Town’s urban environment remains largely segregated and disconnected). Through their eyes we see the opportunity and possibilities that we as South Africans have to create our cities of the future. The film addresses rapid urbanisation and the city’s growing needs for densification with an understanding that the future city will grow out of the existing urban fabric. On that basis we looked at the possibility of new city nodes forming in places of high density with growing urban development. Through just the right balance between top down planning and bottom up development, urban frameworks can allow for the specific needs of communities and individuals to be met. Thus the future city is born out of the creative cultural diversity that exists here in South Africa. We must also work towards a city that is resilient and that can respond to an uncertain changing natural environment.

SECOND YEAR:
ELANDSBAAI - WESTERN CAPE Marine Research and Conservation Centre A public centre where research and educational activities can take place. A facility to teach conservation to locals and visitors about the surrounding environment. There would be spaces provided for workshops and retail as well as a backpackers and small restaurant, allowing for a diverse mix of uses. The intervention also sought to create a human bridge between mountain and sea in order to connect people back to their environment and history.
