A New Chapter: Our transition

To our dear BlueCross family, In our final issue of BluePrint, I felt it most pertinent to address our people, our residents, our clients and their loved ones as family. Since the foundation of BlueCross by the Eccles Family in 1993, we have been united by shared values and a connectedness in providing support, respect, and dignity for those we care for and love, and that is what it means to be a part of a family.

As your CEO, it has been my utmost honour to lead and be a part of this extraordinary organisation, not only conquering the challenges and weathering the storms presented before us, but also celebrating milestones alongside each of you.

Today, I write to share reflections on our journey together and to look ahead as we embark on a transformative chapter with Opal HealthCare. Over the years, each one of you have been a part of and contributed to what BlueCross has become, from its inception, with the acquisition of Begonia, a Residential Aged Care home in Ballarat, to the 31 BlueCross Residences across Melbourne and Regional Victoria, we have today.

We've innovated, disrupted, and most importantly, impacted lives for the better. We have successfully navigated the Aged Care Reforms post Royal Commission, survived and then thrived following the COVID-19 pandemic and with our current “Partners in Living” model of care, complimented by BlueCross Connect, evolved as a provider of aged care services where dignity and choice truly matter with a vision to inspire our community to value and embrace ageing.

In 2017, Sapphire Care merged with BlueCross, it was a time punctuated with achievements and learning curves, each shaping us into the revered entity we are today. This transition was a testament to our success and the recognition of

our potential to scale even greater heights under new stewardship.

Opal HealthCare represents a new era of opportunities. Known for their compassion and commitment to continually strive to provide excellence through a safe, joyful, and purposeful life for all of those they care for. Together we share a vision for the future of healthcare and under their leadership, fulfill the purpose of bringing joy to those we care for underpinned by the values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence. The decision to acquire BlueCross was made with a profound sense of responsibility towards our future and the legacy we wish to build. Under Opal HealthCare's guidance, we will continue to thrive, innovate, and lead, ensuring our mission impacts more lives than ever before.

The transition process has been planned to ensure a seamless changeover, prioritising the continuity of care of our Residents and HomeCare clients, the well-being of our team, and the interests of our stakeholders.

On behalf of the BlueCross Board and our leadership team, I wish to express our deep gratitude to each member of the BlueCross family. Your dedication, resilience, and passion have been the driving force behind our accomplishments. As we pass the baton, we do so with confidence, knowing that our collective efforts have laid a solid foundation for the future and that a piece of BlueCross will always hold a special place in our hearts.

My final message is one of optimism. Change, while inevitable, fuels growth and innovation. I urge you all to embrace this transition with an open mind and a steadfast commitment to excellence. The possibilities that lie ahead are boundless, and I have every confidence that you will continue to thrive under Opal HealthCare's visionary leadership.

Here's to new beginnings and continued success in delivering the care that Older Australians so truly deserve,

The BlueCross Journey

BlueCross' rich history spans over three decades. Founded in 1993 by the Eccles Family, BlueCross embarked on a journey to provide exceptional care and support for ageing Australians. Here’s a look at the history of BlueCross, from humble beginnings to its recent transition.

1990s: Laying the Foundation

The Eccles Family established BlueCross in 1993 with the purchase of Begonia-Ballarat. The following years saw rapid growth as Wynnstay and Keith House were bought in ’94 and ‘95, followed by Toorak House and Yarralee (although the latter then closed). In 1996, Autumdale came on board while Wynnstay closed, and Cresthaven opened in ‘97, followed by the purchase of Sorrento. Then in ’98, Darnlee opened, Toorak House closed, and the purchase of Chatswood in NSW took place. It was a time of fast expansion for BlueCross.

2000s: Expanding Horizons

In 2001, a re-developed Yarralee was opened, however Keith House closed, and Sorrento was sold. The following year, BlueCross expanded further with the opening of Riverlea, Broughtonlea, and Ashby, but Chatswood was sold. In 2003, Western Gardens was added to the growing portfolio. Between the years of 2003-06, Sapphire Holdings Group was established, which later bought Veterans Affairs Home Care (now part of BlueCross HomeCare). Additionally, 2005 marked the opening of Anglesea and the purchase of Gardenia, highlighting BlueCross' continued growth in the aged care sector.

Late 2000s: Towards Excellence

In 2006, BlueCross joined forces with Sapphire Holdings Group, leading to the purchase of the Sapphire Home Care business (now a part of BlueCross HomeCare), along with Highgrove. The partnership marked a significant step forward for BlueCross in expanding its services. In 2008, it opened The Boulevard and acquired Glengowrie. BlueCross also took over Third Age properties which included, Waterdale-Ivanhoe, Clevedon Terrace, Silverwood, Tarralla, Hansworth, and Monterey. In 2009, Willowmeade opened its doors, and BlueCross purchased Livingstone Gardens

and Springfield-Box Hill from Whitehorse Council, before opening Baradine in 2010.

2011 Onwards: Adapting to Change

In 2011, Sapphire Care was founded, adding to the range of services offered by BlueCross. In 2012 Scotchmans Creek was bought, and Anglesea was sold. The acquisitions of Chelsea Manor and Karinya Grove took place in 2014.

In 2017, Sapphire Care merged with BlueCross, expanding the portfolio with Sheridan Hall Brighton, The Gables, The Mews, Hilltop, Elly Kay, Westgarth, Ruckers Hill, Grossard Court, Sheridan Hall Caulfield, and Oakleigh.

In 2019, Cresthaven and Box Hill, were redeveloped and reopened showcasing BlueCross' commitment to enhancing its residences.

However, the years 2020 to 2022 were overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic, posing challenges for BlueCross and the entire aged care sector. In 2021, Clevedon Terrace and Ruckers Hill were closed, followed by Darnlee in 2022.

2024 and beyond: New Beginnings

In 2024, BlueCross will transfer ownership to Opal HealthCare. While the ownership may change, the legacy of excellence and compassion that BlueCross

has built over the years will undoubtedly continue under the stewardship of Opal HealthCare.

The history of BlueCross is a testament to the vision, dedication, and resilience of its founders, stakeholders, and team members. From modest beginnings in the early 1990s to becoming a leading aged care provider in Victoria, BlueCross has stayed committed to improving the lives of the elderly.

As it begins a new chapter under new ownership, one thing is clear: BlueCross' legacy of care and compassion will endure, continuing to inspire future generations.

"Our family's journey with BlueCross has been a profound testament to the love and respect we hold for Australia's aging community.

The legacy we've built together is not just a business venture; it's a reflection of our heartfelt commitment to compassion and excellence. To our residents and families, thank you for letting us be part of your journey; and to our team members, your dedication and compassion have touched countless lives, and for that, we extend our deepest gratitude."— David Eccles, co-founder of BlueCross Aged Care.

BlueCross SuperStars

Meet three amazing team members who reflect the BlueCross legacy of exceptional dedication and care.

Kendra Daly's 20-year tenure at BlueCross shows her incredible dedication to the sector.

Originally from Flinders Ranges, South Australia, Kendra began her journey in Melbourne in 2000 as an Activities Coordinator at then BlueCross residence, Keith House. Since this time, Kendra has undertaken many roles, eventually becoming a Residence Manager at BlueCross Cresthaven and leading its significant redevelopment.

Now a Roving Residence Manager, Kendra can impart her passion and experience across all residences. She cherishes the connections made with residents, families, and colleagues, finding joy in making a positive difference to those she interacts with every day.

Geysi Gonzalez Huezo, originally from El Salvador, began her 27-year journey in aged care while pursuing her Bachelor of Nursing in 1997. Recognising the importance of hands-on experience, she volunteered at then BlueCross residence, Keith House where a conversation with the Director of Nursing paved the way for her role as an assistant in nursing.

“At the age of 20, I found myself immersed in the world of Aged Care, guided by seasoned Registered Nurses who instilled in me the values of dedication, patience, basic nursing care, effective

communication, and genuine compassion,” said Geysi.

Over the years, Geysi has learned more about the complexities of dementia care, Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and Parkinson's disease while collaborating with healthcare professionals to expand her skill set. Today, as an Enrolled Nurse at BlueCross Western Gardens, Geysi celebrates 27 years in the aged care sector with pride.

Gloria Mante of BlueCross Ivanhoe was honoured with the 2023 Living Our Values Award for her exceptional dedication and for always bringing joy and smiles to the faces of residents.

Originally from Ghana, Gloria arrived in Australia in 2008 and began her career as a Personal Care Assistant (PCA). After a hiatus to raise her children, she returned to pursue her passion for aged care at Ivanhoe in 2019. Her motivation to work with older people is rooted in her love for the incredible stories they share, like those her grandmother used to tell her.

Gloria’s commitment and dedication earned her this wonderful recognition, and we applaud Gloria for living our values and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those in our care.

Comfort and Convenience with HomeCare Physiotherapy

BlueCross HomeCare physiotherapy is enhancing healthcare for the better by bringing specialised services directly to clients' homes, removing the need for clinic visits. Customised assessments and ongoing management are delivered in familiar surroundings, ensuring comfort and security to clients.

Luda Laverdure, BlueCross Allied Health Manager explains, “Our physiotherapists play a pivotal role in providing high-quality services to clients within the comfort of their homes as well as within BlueCross' residential aged care residences. They implement tailored treatment plans that enhance the mobility, functionality, and overall well-being of our clients living in the community,” she said.

Helen and Heinz Wolff benefit from the services of BlueCross Physiotherapist Jae Jo. Helen faces mobility challenges and talks of the importance of having the support in familiar surroundings and not having to get to a specific location. "It also means that my husband can benefit from the service as well, receiving tailored exercises for maintaining his independence," she said.

In addition to in-home care, BlueCross also offers inclusive exercise classes within our residences for the broader community. These sessions include chair yoga, balance exercises, strengthening routines, and gym circuits with advanced equipment. By providing access to these wellness initiatives, BlueCross empowers individuals to manage their health proactively, enhancing overall quality of life. Turn to page 8 to find out more.

Building a Connected Community

At BlueCross, our focus is on creating a warm and welcoming community for our residents and clients, and helping to reduce the feeling of loneliness by bringing people together. In the past few weeks, BlueCross has been thrilled to welcome home care, respite, and private services clients to join us in our residences for group activities and programs.

Short group classes are on offer at BlueCross Ivanhoe and BlueCross Livingstone Gardens, with Livingstone Gardens also offering a full day Social Activity Day Program. With growing interest, we're excited about the potential to expand the program to more days and residences, providing even more opportunities for connection.

The Social Activity Day Program runs every Wednesday from 9:30 to 3:30 at Livingstone Gardens. Tailored to clients' interests, Social Group Coordinator Tania, encourages everyone to try new things, meet new friends, and share enriching experiences.

Single activity classes can also be booked, catering to diverse interests and allowing clients

to rediscover old hobbies or explore new ones. Priced at $10 per class, clients also receive a drink voucher for social time in the café after each session. These classes also include various allied health programs like chair yoga, strength and balance, and gym circuit classes, ensuring a well-rounded approach to well-being.

Client feedback has been fantastic. Taki, aged 93, shares, “The main reason for joining the Social Activity Day Program was to start interacting with different people. I like new experiences, people and activities, and I enjoy mental and physical incentives. Programs like this help keep you alive and active. When you come here you are welcomed and looked after like you are part of the family."

Joe, aged 88, adds, “I like the people, and every week it gets better – it is terrific. The food, the people, the surroundings, that’s what I like. What I enjoy the most about this service is the comradery. I am not a young fellow anymore, and it is a place of security.”

Celebrating International Women's Day

In March, BlueCross hosted a special online, live-streamed panel discussion celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) with inspiring individuals from our BlueCross community sharing their stories.

Embracing the theme "Inspire Inclusion," the event took place at BlueCross Livingstone Gardens and focused on the remarkable achievements, and resilience of women.

At the heart of the theme lies the acknowledgment and celebration of differences, fostering empowerment, and ensuring every woman feels valued and respected.

Hosted by Megan Galbally, BlueCross Executive General Manager of People, Culture & Safety, and guided by panel facilitator Cathy Eccles, a founding member and current Board member of BlueCross, the dynamic guest panel comprised of remarkable women from various experiences and backgrounds.

The panel featured Noeline Merlo, a 78-year-old Home Care Client from Richmond and former English teacher. Despite facing health challenges, she remains independent and active, contributing to the BlueCross community as a member of the BlueCross Resident and Client Advisory Committee (BRCAC).

Isabel Webber, a BlueCross Livingstone Gardens resident and former owner-operator of a car wrecker, also contributed, as well as Kay Mpolokeng, a dedicated BlueCross staff member with over a decade of service.

BlueCross Livingstone Gardens Resident, Winnie Phoon, provided a unique perspective as a former social worker in Singapore, highlighting the importance of community engagement. While Sonia Pilipasidis, a BlueCross HomeCare Client, shared her story as a former salon owner,

showcasing resilience and a positive outlook despite health challenges.

Winnie eloquently summarized essential actions for inspiring inclusion beyond International Women's Day: “We must have women in leadership positions modeling inclusive behavior, and providing opportunities for women at all levels of work. We must cultivate female participation as a work culture, reward and showcase successful inclusion, and involve men in support of female inclusion."

The event wouldn't have been possible without the hard work of Residence Manager Melissa Ryley and her fantastic team at BlueCross Livingstone Gardens, and the efforts of the BlueCross Events Committee.

International Women's Day is not just a one-day affair; it's an ongoing commitment to creating a future where women and men stand as equals. As we move forward, let's remember that everyone, everywhere, can inspire inclusion, it starts with you.

Meet BlueCross Maintenance Officer Rosslyn Clay

Rosslyn Clay, known affectionately as Rozzy or Rosie in the garden, embarked on her journey with Sapphire Care back in August 2015 as a dedicated Gardener, across four sites

With the merger of Sapphire Care and BlueCross in 2017, Rosslyn seamlessly extended her expertise as Gardener to include an additional six residences. However, when the onset of COVID-19 reshaped priorities in 2020, Rosslyn gracefully adapted, joining the BlueCross Maintenance team to assist with vital tasks such as delivering PPE and managing excess clinical waste across the region's sites.

As Rosslyn's skillset expanded, so did her role. With her willingness to learn and adapt, she gradually took on maintenance responsibilities at various residences, ultimately securing a Full-Time Permanent Role as the Maintenance Officer at BlueCross Hilltop.

“Being the only female in a predominantly male dominated industry certainly does have its challenges, but keeping an open mind, being flexible, and staying true to my values and boundaries, makes the job a breeze,” said Rosslyn.

Supported by a great Coordinator and embraced by her colleagues and contractors, Rosslyn's hard work and commitment have earned her respect and admiration.

Rosslyn's journey is filled with memorable highlights, ranging from numerous accolades to spearheading transformative improvements at Hilltop. “The highlight right now is that I’m striving to make Hilltop the ‘Hilton on Hilltop’. From replacing carpets, furniture, curtains, refurbing rooms/bathrooms, it really is making Hilltop a more appealing place and feedback from residents, families and even the tours have all been very positive,” said Rosslyn.

Her rapport with residents’ spans years, with many knowing her during her tenure with Sapphire Care. Rosslyn's openness and willingness to share her personal experiences and travel adventures further cement her bond with the residents, fostering a sense of community and connection.

In her hands, Hilltop is not just an aged care residence; it's a place of warmth, care, and constant improvement – a true testament to Rosslyn's unwavering dedication and passion.

Exciting Updates on BlueCross Renovations

Glengowrie MSE Conversion

We recently caught up with Kate Naseri, BlueCross' Head of Major Projects, to get the inside scoop on the ongoing projects and renovations at BlueCross residences. Here's a sneak peek into the transformative initiatives that are underway.

This ambitious project introduces a second Memory Support Environment (MSE) at BlueCross Glengowrie by giving the Banksia wing a Mediterranean-themed makeover. Among the highlights is the introduction of a kitchenette-like space with a dedicated dining area for residents. The revamp also includes repurposing a storage room into a versatile calming and multisensory space. A notable addition is dementia-friendly wayfinding signage, designed to visually enhance the environment for residents. To ensure maximum comfort, extra soundproofing and new flooring has also been incorporated.

Grossard Court MSE Upgrade

Embracing a coastal theme, BlueCross Grossard Court is undergoing a significant transformation of its MSE in Tuli Wing. Breaking away from traditional nurses’ stations, the current station will be revamped into a staff working nook, providing more space for residents to decorate as they would if they were in their own home. The existing kitchen is set to be opened up, ensuring it is safe for residents to use as a kitchenette, allowing a serene and enabling space for residents.

Inspired by the success of BlueCross Glengowrie MSE, dementia-friendly wayfinding signage will also be implemented.

Scotchman’s Creek Entrance Refurbishment

The refurbishment of BlueCross Scotchman’s Creek is well underway, with a focus on transforming the ground floor entrance, offices, and main lounge area into modern, inviting spaces. Stage one is now complete, serving as a temporary administrative area as we transition to Stage two, focusing on revamping the admin offices and back-of-house spaces. The Hairdresser's salon is in its final stages and will be ready for operation in May.

Painting Projects

BlueCross Autumdale and BlueCross Taralla have undergone a refreshing transformation with a new dementia-friendly paint scheme. And now, BlueCross Baradine and BlueCross Chelsea Manor are currently undergoing similar updates, promising a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for residents.

Everything we do is to ensure our residents feel happy, safe, and comfortable. From sprucing up shared spaces to adding new support areas, our goal is to create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere for all.
