Chef Nooror Somany Steppe

Founder and Chef

was born in Thailand?s Chachoengsao province where her family owned a small Thai restaurant. Growing up in these surroundings instilled in Mrs. Nooror both the love and the skills for cooking Thai cuisine. During this time and her later years living overseas, she also acquired a strong proficiency in creating new Thai dishes but retaining the true flavour of traditional Thai cuisine. Her passion and this culinary gift have inspired her to become the purveyor of Thai cuisine to the world stage and Blue Elephant restaurants as one of Thailand?s foremost women chefs.

Chef Nooror Somany Steppe isthe inspiration and central person behind the successof Blue Elephant,constantly workingasan ambassador advocatingThai cuisine and Thai culture to all whom she encountersaround the world.

The Thai Chine building was built in 1903 and originally opened as the Bombay Department Store in what was then one of the most exclusive and posh Bangkok neighborhoods of its times. The building was conveniently located within walking distance from the then two best hotels in Siam: The Royal Hotel (formerly Russian Embassy on North Sathorn Road) and the illustrious Oriental Hotel later known asMandarin Oriental,Bangkok.

In 1928 a group of affluent Chinese tycoons initiated the establishment of a Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce. They purchased the Bombay Department Store, at a bargain price, and turned it into the Chamber?s headquarters. In January 1930, His Majesty King Rama VII inaugurated at the opening of the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Thailand.

COOKINGSCHOOL & RESTAURANT BLUE ELEPHANT BANGKOK

Located in the heart of Bangkok opposite the Surasak Skytrain station in the Thai Chine building; a remarkably restored century-old mansion owned by the Thai-ChineseChamber of Commercewhere you will discover and experience the culinary wonders of Chef Nooror?s cuisine.

During World War II the building was used as a Command Center by the Imperial Japanese Army. After the war the building once again became the headquarters of the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and was used as offices and later for functions until the opening of their TCC Building, which sits behind the Thai Chine Building. The building is cited by the Fine Arts Department as an exceptional example of the colonial era architecture. Following a partial renovation in 2000, the building has now been fully and totally revitalized and restored by Blue Elephant for its wondrous rebirth as the Blue Elephant Cooking School and Restaurant.

GOVERNOR'S MANSION BLUE ELEPHANT PHUKET

The Blue Elephant Cooking School and Restaurant on Phuket island are located in Phuket town, a charming place renowned as a Unesco City of gastronomy. The mansion issituated in the heart of the Thai-Chinese Peranakan community, also popularly known asPhuket Babas.

The mansion of the Blue Elephant was previously the governor?s residenceand theofficial venueto host visitingdignitaries.In 2010 the estate was entirely renovated and extended to accommodate theBlueElephant CookingSchool and Restaurant.

This historic European style mansion, the first of its kind to be constructed in 1903, boasts an elegant combination of Sino-Portuguese architecture with a traditional Chinese style décor. The lounges, function rooms and terrace can easily welcome up to 900 to 1000 guests in all comfort. They offer an extraordinary view on one of the largest lawn and garden in Phuket town. The mansion and gardens have been the decor for several blockbuster movies and productions for television channelsaround theworld.
