From start to finish, Woodstock nails the concept.

Woodstock is custom design and fine homebuilding, up close and personal. At every point in the building process, you work directly with our owners, Bob Slawson and Nick Winings. Bob designs and creates the plans. Nick brings them to life. With premium lots in Hamilton County’s most sought-after neighborhoods and several quick move-in opportunities underway, we’ll create a home worthy of your dream lifestyle. It all starts with a conversation.

To learn more about Woodstock and see examples of our lifestyle home design, visit WoodstockCustomHomes.com or swing by and take a personal tour of either of our fully-decorated model homes in Noblesville’s Sagamore or Westfield’s Reserve on South neighborhoods.

16392 Grand Cypress Drive & 17107 Sanders Farm Circle are open every Saturday & Sunday 12-4.

Every town has its heroes but two in Noblesville deserve special mention. Dutch Barrett and Kevin Popp established a painting business here in 2005 while also working as firemen. They not only make structures look better, they save them from extinction. How did such disparate vocations come to be?

It started in Surrey, British Columbia for Kevin, who grew up playing hockey. He was good enough for the pros to notice and eventually landed with the Indianapolis Ice from 2001-03. Dutch also played hockey as a youngster in Minnesota and later in college, which led to a coaching career in Indy. From this mutual interest two successful ventures were born.

“I grew up painting homes in the summer,” Dutch said (he’s the talkative one). “It provided a nice income and the finished project gave me a lot of satisfaction. My wife’s family moved from Texas to Indiana so that’s where we’ve all chosen to settle. As I looked at ways to earn a living, it was natural to focus on my earlier experience in painting.”

How did firefighting figure into the formula? After Kevin finished his hockey career, he too turned to a childhood interest. “I didn’t think I’d be happy sitting at a desk; I’m used to activity. Firemen have to stay fit because they protect life and property as well as handle medical emergencies in homes and on the streets. Seemed like a good way to work and serve the community.”

Kevin became a firefighter in Wayne Township and encouraged his hockey buddy to become one too. Dutch did just that but also wanted a partner to start a painting company. Voila! DutchPopp Painting, LLC was formed in 2005 by two former hockey players who also put out fires.

That company has become quite a success. DutchPopp began by painting apartment complexes and plowing money back into the business in order to purchase all the equipment necessary for day to day operations. No salaries for them initially but they were off and running.

“Our philosophy,” according to Dutch,” has always been to listen to our clients. If we hear what they say and communicate carefully, so many issues can be avoided. We have project managers and a team of eight or nine painters and that ability to communicate is an important consideration when they’re hired.” In addition DutchPopp offers free estimates and takes no deposit until the project is completed to insure customer satisfaction. A three year warranty guarantees they stand behind their work.

But if you’re someone who struggles with paint chips and what beige/white/blue shade to pick, is there anyone who can help?

“Yes,” and Dutch actually sounds reassuring, “we have a color consultant who for $100 who will come out to help make those decisions.”

“Color favorites have waxed and waned over the years,” he continues, “but gray has become a staple that works well with lots of other shades. Some of the newer selections include exotic browns, tawny violets and deep navy. These are especially popular in dining rooms, kitchens and offices.”

Sherwin Williams is the paint of choice for the company. Both Kevin and Dutch feel it is an excellent quality product with lots of stores that offer easy access wherever the job might take them. If, on the other hand, a client wants a different brand, DutchPopp is more than willing to accommodate. “We have accounts with all the paint stores and can purchase whatever the client prefers,” Kevin says and adds that they pass along their painter’s discount.

Looking for a homegrown but sophisticated company to update your interior or exterior? DutchPopp Painting has the experience, ability and work ethic to transform your house into the home you’ve dreamed of.

Whichever hat you’re wearing, thank you Dutch and Kevin for your service.

BEAUTIFUL GARDENS

5 Steps to Prep Your Yard for Spring

When spring arrives, days of enjoying your outdoor living space aren’t far away. Getting your yard ready for months of outdoor enjoyment will take a little work, but you’ll quickly see and appreciate the results.

These five steps can have you on your way to a lush, healthy lawn and outdoor area in no time.

14 | www.ExecutivePortfolio.com

Throughout the winter, dead grass and other debris accumulate on your lawn. This waste, known as thatch, can be quite a hindrance to your spring lawn. It promotes fungi, encourages pests and keeps new grass seed from sprouting. You can use a special dethatching rake or any rake with sturdy tines.

Before spreading grass seed, you’ll want to give the new roots room to spread and grow. Aerating the lawn helps make your soil more welcoming to new growth by allowing moisture, nutrients and air to sink deeper into the soil. Depending on the size of area you need to aerate, two of the easiest options are doing the job by hand or using an attachment on a riding lawn mower.

4. Weed

Even the healthiest lawns are susceptible to weeds, but getting a jump start on weeding early in the season can help you keep control. You can manage weeds by treating with an herbicide before the sprout or, if you prefer, there are chemical-free alternatives like vinegar, salt or cornmeal. Be aware that many alternative products don’t distinguish between the vegetation you want (like grass) and weeds, so these remedies are best used along borders and within beds to discourage weed growth.

5. Seed

Winter weather and wear can cause uneven patches in the lawn. Seeding in the spring requires more work than the fall (especially if you tend to have hot, dry summers), but with enough nurturing and regular water, you can fill those spots in for a more uniform lawn.

The lawn isn’t the only place debris can pile up. Your flower beds and any other vegetation can become a holding ground for twigs, branches, leaves and other yard waste. Give your plants, shrubs and trees a close look to find broken, damaged or dead material and remove it to make way for new growth.

Visit eLivingtoday.com for more advice to make your outdoor living space spectacular.

TRAVEL TIPS

5 Budget-Friendly Travel Tips

For many people, traveling is about exploring new cultures, landscapes, cuisines and ideas. However, the cost of the trip is still one of the most important considerations when booking a vacation.

In fact, according to a survey conducted by Slickdeals, a one-of-a-kind online community of shoppers working together to shop smarter and save more, 81% of respondents listed total cost as their top consideration followed by a desire for kid-friendly experiences at the destination and discounts or deals on transportation and lodging.

Even amid reported concerns about inflation (56%), increasing flight costs (51%) and gas prices (49%), 84% of families plan to spend the same amount or more on travel this year as last. Among the respondents, 42% plan to spend between $1,501-3,000 and 15% plan to spend $5,000 or more on travel.

20 | www.ExecutivePortfolio.com

While traveling is undoubtedly an investment, it doesn’t have to break the bank. Consider these tips from Pete King, deal expert for Slickdeals, to save money as you begin planning your next excursion.

Set your budget with hidden costs in mind.

When setting budgets, many people stop at the basics like transportation, accommodations and entertainment. Make sure to factor in additional costs such as pet care, food, checked luggage fees and airport and hotel parking so there are no surprises at the end of the trip.

Look for deals.

Being open to a variety of destinations and travel dates can help you score the best deals. If you’re tired of switching between booking sites or searching online for bargains, consider browsing the latest travel deals on the Slickdeals Travel Page where community members share some of the best travel deals on the internet, which can save you time and effort when looking for savings on your trip. You can even set deal alerts to be notified when deals pop up for your desired destination.

Bring an empty water bottle.

While Transportation Security Administration regulations don’t allow you to bring most fluids through security checkpoints in airports, packing an empty water bottle in your carry-on or personal item can save you from high costs inside the terminal. Once you’re through security, simply fill your bottle at the

nearest water fountain. An added bonus: You can take the full bottle on the airplane to stay hydrated during the flight without having to rely on the small complimentary beverage on board.

Pack less than you think you’ll need.

Many people overpack, and that can be a costly mistake. A single checked bag can cost as much as $50, and some airlines charge extra for a ticket that includes a carry-on. For a weekend trip, keep it simple with a carry-on or backpack, and for longer adventures, keep in mind nobody at your destination will likely know you wore the same jeans two days in a row.

Find the right rewards credit card.

If you have a rewards credit card, you could get cash back when you make certain purchases. You could get a percentage back on groceries, travel, dining and more. For example, with a travel rewards credit card, you earn points or miles that can be redeemed for future travel plans. General travel cards earn points or miles on virtually every purchase, regardless of airline or hotel chain, while co-branded cards that align with a specific airline or hotel reward users with more points for loyalty spending and provide additional benefits like free checked bags or a free night’s stay on your card anniversary.

Planning to sell your house? It’s critical to hire a pro.

With higher mortgage rates and moderating buyer demand, conditions in the housing market are different today. The best way to make sure you’re in the know is to work with a trusted housing market expert.

A real estate advisor is an expert on market trends

During challenging and changing market conditions, one thing that’s calming and constant is the assurance that comes from a REALTOR® being in your corner through every step of the home transaction. Consumers can rely on REALTORS®’ unmatched work ethic, trusted guidance and objectivity to help manage the complexities associated with the home buying and selling process.

A local professional knows how to set the right price for your house

Home price appreciation has moderated. If you sell your house on your own, you may be more likely to overshoot your asking price because you’re not as aware of where prices are today. If you do, you run the risk of deterring buyers or seeing your house sit on the market for longer.

A real estate professional provides an unbiased eye when they help you determine a price for your house. They’ll use a variety of factors, like the condition of your home and any upgrades you’ve made, and compare your house to recently sold homes in your area to find the best price for today’s market. These steps are key to making sure it’s set to move as quickly as possible.

A real estate advisor helps maximize your pool of buyers

Since buyer demand has cooled this year, you’ll want to do what you can to help bring in more buyers. Real estate professionals have a large variety of tools at their disposal, such as social media followers, agency resources, and the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) to ensure your house gets in front of people looking to make a purchase. Without access to the tools and your agent’s marketing expertise, your buyer pool – and your home’s selling potential – is limited.

A real estate expert will read – and understand – the fine print

Today, more disclosures and regulations are mandatory when selling a house. That means the number of legal documents you’ll need to juggle is growing. Selling a home typically requires a variety

of forms, reports, disclosures, and other legal and financial documents. Also, there’s a lot of jargon involved in a real estate transaction; you want to work with a professional who can speak the language.

A trusted advisor is a skilled negotiator

In today’s market, buyers are also regaining some negotiation power as bidding wars ease. If you sell without a professional, you’ll also be responsible for any back-and-forth. That means you’ll have to coordinate with:

• The buyer, who wants the best deal possible

• The buyer’s agent, who will use their expertise to advocate for the buyer

• The inspection company, which works for the buyer and will almost always find concerns with the house

• The appraiser, who assesses the property’s value to protect the lender

Instead of going toe-to-toe with all the above parties alone, lean on an expert. They’ll know what levers to pull, how to address everyone’s concerns, and when you may want to get a second opinion.

BACKYARD BEAUTIES

Basic Tips for Feeding Wild Birds

With all the constraints people lived through in 2020, many turned to their own backyards – nature, in particular – for hope, solace, wonder and even entertainment. Despite the worldwide crisis, nature’s normalcy remained intact; flowers continued to bloom, bees continued to pollinate and birds continued to fly and forage food.

Feeding birds can be enjoyable for any age group and provide stress relief for all who partake. A University of Exeter study, focused on nature’s impact on humans in suburban and urban areas, found lower levels of depression, anxiety and stress were associated with the number of birds people saw during afternoons at home. The benefits of birdwatching come from seeing lots of birds – quantity not “quality” – the study found.

People “felt relaxed and connected to nature when they watched birds in their gardens,” researchers said. These feelings increased with the level of bird feeding in the yard. For millions working and schooling from home, this stress reduction was an unintended bonus.

Data from 2020 shows sales of bird feed, feeders, nesting boxes and bird houses spiked as interest in backyard birds soared while people spent more time at home.

Interest in birding isn’t slowing down. If you haven’t tried attracting birds to your backyard, now is a perfect opportunity to start. The experts at Cole’s Wild Bird Products Co. offer these bird feed and feeder basics to attract more birds to your backyard.

Feeders

A variety of bird feeder types placed at different heights attract more birds than one feeder featuring one seed type. Start with two feeder types that accommodate most feed options. Bowl feeders serve not only seeds but also dried mealworms, fruit and suet. An option like Cole’s Bountiful Bowl Feeder comes with an adjustable dome cover you can raise or lower to prevent larger birds and squirrels from getting to food and protect it from rain.

Traditional tube feeders are all-purpose options for bird feeding, especially for small birds that cling. For example, the Terrific Tube Feeder is made with state-of-the-art materials to prevent warping and discoloration and includes a quick-clean, removable base to make cleaning fast and easy. Just push a button and the bottom of the feeder pops off for easy access to the inside. Rinse the feeder with soapy water, dunk it into a water-bleach solution at a concentration of 9-to-1, rinse, dry and reattach the bottom. Regular cleaning of feeders is essential for preventing mold, germs and disease.

Popular Foods

Birdseed: Not all birdseed is created equal. Look for quality blends without cheap filler like red millet and oats. All-natural seed containing no chemicals or mineral oil is safe and more appealing to birds. Top seed picks include all-natural black oil sunflower and Cole’s “Hot Meats” (sunflower meats infused with habanero chili peppers that birds love and squirrels dislike). Or an option like Special Feeder blend, packed with favorites including black oil sunflower, sunflower meats and pecans, attracts the greatest number of wild birds. Offering a wide variety, Cole’s feed is researched and specifically formulated to attract certain bird species, the largest number of birds and the greatest variety of birds.

Insects and Worms: A healthy, lush lawn is one of the best ways to feed birds that prefer insects and worms. You can supplement birds’ diets by serving dried mealworms in a packaged variety that’s easier to feed and less messy than live mealworms. Mealworms are packed with energy and contain essential nutrients, fat and protein.

Fresh Fruit: Apples, orange halves and bananas are favored fruits.

Suet: Perfect for insect-eating birds, suet is a high-fat food that provides abundant calories, rich nutrition and is a high-energy treat.

Using the right feeders and high-quality feed can enhance your backyard and entice more birds, bringing stress relief and enjoyment. For more information on attracting birds to your backyard, visit coleswildbird.com

Prioritize Heart Health with a Balanced Eating Plan

No matter your motivations, it’s never too late or too early to start focusing on your heart health, and taking steps now can make a big difference. Small changes, like following a healthier eating plan, can help you start down a path toward improved heart health.

One step you can take is following the DASH eating plan, which is a flexible and balanced way of eating that stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension and was developed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Requiring no special foods, DASH provides daily and weekly nutritional goals to help lower two major risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure and high LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Being more physically active, managing stress, getting quality sleep and not smoking combined with DASH can put you on a path toward a healthy heart for life.

Encouraging others to join you on your heart-health journey can also be rewarding. Research shows social support and personal networks make it more likely you’ll stick to healthy habits like eating healthy.

Sharing heart-healthy recipes with family and friends is an added bonus, and these DASH-friendly meals can help you take the guesswork out of putting nutritious dinners on the table. Greek-Style Flank Steaks with Tangy Yogurt Sauce offer the bold flavors of the Mediterranean while Teriyaki-Glazed Salmon with Stir-Fried Vegetables is as easy to make as it is colorful. For a complementary combination of pork and sweet fruit flavor, these Baked Pork Chops with Apple Cranberry Sauce are perfect to serve alongside brown rice or steamed broccoli.
