Ocean themed one-of-a-kind marquetry
Backgammon set by Alexandra Llewellyn
There is magic at play in this beautiful bespoke Blue Marine marquetry backgammon set by Alexandra Llewellyn. A one-of-a-kind, this luxury board game and modern heirloom, is entirely handmade by British artisans Crafted using an incredible array of sustainable materials, this extraordinary work of art honours the tireless work undertaken by Blue Marine to protect our seas
In celebration of the tropical coral reefs and British kelp forests that are the focus of several of the Charity’s conservation projects, the design dives beneath the waves and into the underwater worlds that are being nurtured back to health by Blue Marine The design direction was started and developed in conversation with Steve Edge Design, a global brand and digital design agency, a longstanding supporter of Blue Marine.
Displaying Alexandra’s signature tongue-in-cheek humour, a seahorse, seal, oyster, shark and lobster have migrated from warmer seas to hide out in the cold depths of the kelp forest.
Using an artisanal technique that has earned Alexandra international renown, the vibrant coral reef on the exterior of the box and the sunlight-dappled kelp forest on the backgammon board have been handcrafted using the ancient technique of wood marquetry Inlaid with thousands of pieces of dyed blue sycamore, birdseye maple and other coloured woods by one of Britain’s foremost marquetry artists, the bright corals frame a prowling shark and wrap around the box in an extraordinary feat of craftsmanship

Image:
Olly & Suzi with Greg Williams
Carcaradon
Guadalupe Island, Mexico, 1992
51 x 51 cms
C-type handmade print
Edition of 25, signed on reverse by the artists
Artists Olly & Suzi collaborated with the photographer Greg Williams to create this image showing the beauty of an apex predator in its natural environment
“For us the photograph defines the majesty of this endangered predator - a predator without which the biodiversity of the ocean would suffer catastrophically ”
In 1992, on the advice of BBC underwater film maker Doug Allan, they travelled to Isla Guadalupe in Mexican waters, where not only was there an abundance of adolescent great white sharks but the clarity of the water was over 40m.
Diving down in rudimentary cages each day they made a series of underwater studies of great white sharks as they attempted to ambush sealions without success.
This was taken before digital photography and the photographer sourced the only medium format underwater Hasselblad housing available Blue Marine is currently working on a shark conservation programme and campaign in the Mediterranean
This photograph is also in Damien Hirst’s personal art collection.
Olly & Suzi
Olly & Suzi are collaborative artists who track, paint and photograph endangered species in the wild. For the past 35 years they have been in a conversation with the natural world. Their art-making process is concerned with their collaborative, mutual response to nature at its most primitive and wild Through live and direct interaction, they aim to document the passing of animals, habitats and tribes that are here now but might not be for much longer
“We make all our work in response to the natural world from first-hand experience, from ‘ground-truth’. In this way the bush has become our studio.” ollysuzi.com

Limited edition ‘Old Forester Birthday Bourbon,’ bottled in 2016
Old Forester is one of the oldest whisky houses in America. The brand has been on the shelves for over 150 consecutive years. It’s also the first brand of whisky to be sold on the open market in sealed bottles
When it comes to Louisville’s Old Forester, there’s one bottle that rules them all Old Forester Birthday Bourbon The main reason is that this is American whiskey that’s super rare and always interesting and single bottles can go for five figures. It is released once per year with a very small bottle count making it into the masses The whiskey is usually a blend of 12-year-old barrels that were all filled on the same day (hence the “Birthday” moniker) It also always comes in at a very sippable 96-proof
The rarity has increased by Old Forester moving to a lottery system to acquire a bottle from the distillery. Small allocations went out to elite bars and restaurants and if you wished to secure a special bottle as a consumer, you must win a distillery lottery and go to Kentucky to pick up your bottle
RRP: $199 99 from the distillery via a lottery, which has over 100,000 entrants this year. $1500-$3500 in secondary markets.
