ROBERT MALHERBE RESIST THE SPIRIT OF THE TIMES 30 APRIL – 5 JUNE Resist the spirit of the times surveys the first twelve years of the artist’s career, bringing together over thirty paintings and drawings from private and public collections. With a focus on Malherbe’s acclaimed landscapes, nudes and still lifes, this exhibition highlights the artist’s deeply personal and honest process of painting from life to capture the essence of his subjects. Resisting the ever shifting trends and moods of the contemporary art world, Malherbe has stayed true to his reductive approach to colour and surfaces that speak of the artistic process. INTERVIEW WITH MAP DIRECTOR & HEAD CURATOR BILLY GRUNER MAP stands for Modern Arts Projects. What is MAP’s vision? Modern Art Projects (MAP) has been planned, designed and delivered as a program rather than an Artist Run Initiative. As an independent arts organisation, it was established and is managed by a coterie of experienced contemporary art makers living in the Blue Mountains. MAP now services the specific needs and expectations of a regional network of participants who want to work together at the local level. In taking on a challenging brief with limited funds, the artists association wanted to do unusual things, and by selecting important spaces in the community, MAP creates exhibitions outside of the gallery model. Following the first few shows or architectural events, the number of artists wanting to join in MAP’s planning grew considerably. In response, MAP self-funded and

opened WEST, a contemporary project space as an Artist Run Initiative. Since its establishment in December 2014, WEST has showcased over ten experimental shows curated by a team of local artists and curators. MAP has delivered a variety of exhibitions, performances and public events. What are the core ideas of the events and what are some of the program highlights? In the last two years MAP has delivered a range of exhibitions, performances, panel talks and public events. Most commonly, guest curators are asked to invite artists to exhibit contemporary works in private homes of unique architectural interest and in other public buildings such as National Trust sites. MAP also runs exchange projects such as The Reflex Project, conducted in association with the USQ, Brisbane, and Five Walls Projects in Melbourne.
The MAP group is made up of a number of local contemporary artists sharing a directive to operate in unusual ways and to take advantage of the Blue Mountains’ cultural assets. This has been seen as an alternative to leaving town to produce and exhibit work elsewhere. At each event, the aim is to create layers of experience. For example, the basic formula for the Art and Architecture series is to invite a curator to select who they want to work with in putting together a contemporary art show within a unique property - either private or public - within the mountains. However, the buildings and grounds compete for the visitors interest. Most importantly, MAP involves the community at each event. The owners of the buildings are asked to hold tours and speak about their relationship with the building while addressing the art shown in their space. The architects who designed
the buildings are invited to give a talk, and artists and curators are made available for anyone to chat with informally over the course of those single day events. It is that social aspect focused on by MAP artists that I feel ‘normalises’ the art and the experience of the visitors. In that sense, the concept underpinning the Art & Architecture series especially came from the idea that every building is a form of gallery. If we consider that a regular domestic home is usually decorated by degrees by the owners with art and furnishings, it is a natural step to also bring art from outside into these domestic settings. Gallery or museum spaces are vastly outnumbered by private homes. MAP was interested this notion and found its Art and Architecture series was likewise embraced by the community. Approximately 200 visitors attended each of our one-day events. The

domestic origins of the many contemporary art societies also speak to this same story - those earlier community driven projects dating back to the late 19th Century predate museums and art schools in Australia.
community and gained support from their Local Council to open an artist administered art space that would in similar ways seek to bring together the contemporary arts community there.
MAP and its satellite WEST have recently partnered with NORTH in Sydney.
The NORTH Contemporary Art Space opened with the exhibition titled NORTH WEST presenting the works of around thirty WEST artists. A number of us travelled down to the opening to support NORTH. At the opening there was a great deal of talk about

a model that, instead of seeking a radical independence, can typify a standard Artist Run Initiative project, which allows artists to engage with communities at a grass roots level - an approach or style that makes for a happy, grounded and culturally inclusive system. As such, today MAP is a Local Council supported but independently run, community aware public art program. The main benefit is that these community-supported art spaces
(known as Kuntvereins in Europe) operate with a high turnover of artists that are nonetheless shown in a professional way, at minimal cost. The artists in a particular region benefit by having the opportunity to exhibit their work on a regular basis and develop professionally within their environment. The mutual benefit of this process is the impact on our local culture through opportunities for artists to show, and the community to view, work developed in our region. The MAP Committee feels this ‘normalising’ of communities to the art of the contemporary makers leads to highly productive outcomes. The Blue Mountains City Art Gallery is an architecturally interesting venue to work with. What do you envision the responses from MAP artists to the venue will be for this exhibition? We will see a composition of works that speak to one another and respond to their environment. As the artists selected have exhibited
together previously, it is expected that it will take shape as a collective response to the theme of the exhibition. Blue Mountains Cultural Centre is a stunning new building with a large and flexible internal space, surrounded by courtyards and sublime views across the Jamieson Valley. These factors combined make for a spectacular range of options for the artists to consider. With that stated, the idea of the architectural never seems far from this community of artist’s minds and art that verges into structure will likely be a central theme explored and presented. How to do you see the Blue Mountains contemporary art scene in regards to its position in the current Australian art landscape? My partner and I moved here around seven years ago and immediately found a large community of wellknown artists living across the Mountains, most of whom are widely recognised, but commonly
only outside of the Mountains area. Many of these artists, curators and arts administrators have national and international profiles, so they contribute significantly but are not known as Blue Mountains artists per se. The opening of Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, MAP and WEST project space, have encouraged a discursive and practical homeland to inhabit, one that is now more visible on a greater stage. I, for one, believe having a fitting sense of one’s own location makes sense in a globally connected world, and what a stunning place the Blue Mountains is fast becoming on the cultural stage.
