FROM THE DIRECTOR Considering it has only been a little over two years since we started collecting, it is a great achievement for the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre to curate an exhibition from our Collection. This achievement is thanks to the many donors, artists and philanthropists who have generously contributed to our collecting aims. The exhibition The Collection, on show from 11 June to 24 July, is testament to our supporters’ commitment to building a public collection that benefits the Blue Mountains Community for many generations to come, and I take this opportunity to thank all those who have played a part in growing this important resource. Running concurrently with our Collection exhibition, we welcome for the first time to the Blue Mountains the touring exhibition of the Archibald Prize, The Archibald Prize 2015, on show from 11 June to 24 July.
Yet another milestone for the Cultural Centre is the inaugural exhibition of the World Heritage Artist in Residence Program. The first artist to take part in our residency was Magda Wegrzyn from Torun, Poland who spent six weeks developing an exhibition at our partner artist residency site, BigCi, in Bilpin. The results of the residency will be shown at the Cultural Centre from 30 July to 11 September. Titled Error Strategy, Magda’s exhibition references the topography of the Blue Mountains and early exploration of the area. This exhibition is hoped to be the first of many as national and international artists participate in the Cultural Centre’s bi-annual residency program, spreading recognition of the Cultural Centre across the globe. BLUE MOUNTAINS CULTURAL CENTRE AND SCULPTURE AT SCENIC WORLD PARTNERSHIP EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITY 6 JUNE – 4 JULY 2016 Every year one work from the Sculpture at Scenic World exhibition is chosen for the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Exhibition Opportunity, which will be displayed for one month at the Cultural Centre’s central courtyard after Sculpture at Scenic World concludes. This year the Exhibition Opportunity was awarded to Suzie Bleach & Andy Townsend with their work Alicanto. The work Alicanto (2015) takes its inspiration from a bird in Chilean mythology that inhabits small caves in mineral bearing hills and feeds upon gold and silver. A fortunate miner, following the bird undetected, will find silver or gold. But, if alerted, the Alicanto will guide the greedy miner into a precipice and certain death. This hybrid is an allegory of human yearning for “growth”, ever rising wealth, what Dr. Seuss described as “biggering and
biggering”, and also the perils and risks associated with achieving and maintaining our rising living standards. The form of the figure is rendered as a steel grid, referencing contemporary digital interpretations of the built and natural worlds that have become commonplace these days. Computer technology allows us to explore beneath the surface of humans and mountains. The figure itself has more than a passing resemblance to a fallen angel. Alicanto will be exhibited at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre’s central courtyard from 6 June – 4 July 2016. World Heritage Exhibition In 2000 the Greater Blue Mountains Area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of the exceptional diversity and integrity of its eucalypt forest communities. The permanent World Heritage Exhibition: Into the Blue features high-tech interactive exhibitions exploring the natural and social landscapes of this unique area. Audiences are invited to navigate their way through these stories through an immersive exhibition experience, introducing them to the richness and wonders of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

THE COLLECTION 11 JUNE – 24 JULY The Collection presents the first exhibition curated from the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Collection, which was launched in March 2014. Since then, over 90 significant artworks by local and Australian artists have been aquired for the collection. Each artwork was selected based on its excellence, relevance, value and ability to celebrate the cultural identity of the Blue Mountains. ARCHIBALD PRIZE 2015 REGIONAL TOUR 11 JUNE – 24 JULY The Archibald Prize 2015 is an Art Gallery of New South Wales touring exhibition. The exhibition presents the finalists from this highly-anticipated and much loved major portraiture prize held annually by the Art Gallery of NSW. The Archibald Prize awards $100,000 to the winning artist. Entries must be painted in the past year, from at least one live sitting with the artist. Finalists are exhibited at the Art Gallery of NSW before touring, providing regional Australian audiences the opportunity to experience and enjoy the Archibald Prize in their local community. MAGDA WEGRZYN ERROR STRATEGY 30 JULY – 11 SEPTEMBER Magda Wegrzyn from Torun, Poland was selected to participate in the inaugural World Heritage Artist in Residence Program and will present Error Strategy in the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery. Her body of work is based on Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson’s exploration and crossing of the Blue Mountains and its twofold consequences: The achievement of successfully navigating extremely challenging terrain and finding access to new land for agricultural purposes on the one hand and the dispossession of the traditional owners of the land and destruction of their culture on the other. Wegrzyn is intrigued by this duality of ‘exploration’ and through her exhibition will investigate the idea of errors made in past exploration of new territory and its implication for future generations. KRIS PETA DERAY DRAWING LIGHT 30 JULY – 4 SEPTEMBER Drawing Light investigates the significance of light as a determining characteristic of the Australian landscape. The tradition of portraying landscape through ligh is redefined in this exhibition by the artist, whose focus is not on representing light but rather utilising it as an essential artistic material. Through a combination of installation, lighting and painting Deray creates a fictive space in the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery, encouraging visitors to re-imagine their own concepts of the Australian landscape. SACRED 10 SEPTEMBER – 16 OCTOBER Over a twelve-month period a group of artists were challenged to explore the question ‘What is sacred to you?’. The resultant responses and use of artistic media are diverse yet possess thematic similarities. The major themes running through this exhibition examine the love of being connected to family and friends, the natural world and the ever-expanding universe; as well as the strength of being connected to culture, faith and the spirit of things. ARTEXPRESS 2016 17 SEPTEMBER – 6 NOVEMBER ARTEXPRESS 2016 features a selection of outstanding student artworks developed for the artmaking component of the HSC examination in Visual Arts 2015. The Blue Mountains City Art Gallery will show a selection of 33 artworks by students from the Blue Mountains, Central West and NSW. The works provide insights into issues that are important to the young artists, such as cultural and gender identity, globalisation and climate change. The exhibition encompasses a broad range of approaches and expressive forms, including ceramics, sculpture, timebased works and animation, drawing, graphic design, painting, photomedia, printmaking and textiles and fibre. ARTEXPRESS is a joint venture of the NSW Department of Education and the Board of Studies Teaching and Educational Standards NSW, hosted by Blue Mountains City Art Gallery.

ARCHIBALD PRIZE 2015 REGIONAL TOUR The Archibald Prize is a major art award run by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. It is an open competition, meaning anyone who has been resident in Australia or New Zealand in the previous 12 months can enter. Awarded to the best painting of a notable Australian, the Archibald Prize is a who’s who of Australian culture, from politicians to celebrities and from sporting heroes to artists. A portrait prize, the Archibald Prize awards $100,000 prize money for the winning artist (up from $75,000 last year). Entries must be painted in the past year from at least one live sitting. High profile, eagerly anticipated and often controversial, the Archibald Prize for portraiture dates back 94 years: it was established in 1921 from a bequest made by Jules Francois Archibald. Archibald was a passionate supporter of a distinctly Australian style of
nationalism, journalism and the arts. In establishing the prize, his aim was to foster portraiture as well as support artists and perpetuate the memory of great Australians. Archibald died in 1919 at St Vincent’s Hospital in Darlinghurst, with the first Archibald Prize being staged two years after his death.

Celebrating the Collection Since March 2014, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre has been actively building a public art collection with the intent of preserving and documenting the visual art practice that the region inspires. Through the generosity of many in our community we have managed to grow the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Collection by purchasing artworks and accepting artwork donations. The Collection has now reached a size that has allowed us to curate and display our first Collection exhibition. The Collection is an exhibition that acknowledges both the generosity of donors and the exceptional draw the Blue Mountains has on many of Australia’s most acclaimed artists. Works by Wendy Sharpe, Joan Ross and Peter Kingston celebrate the many facets of the Mountains 22 • Blue Mountains City Art Gallery
unique social character while works by Andrew Merry, Michael Mandelc and John Caldwell capture the grandeur of the vistas to be found throughout the region. Many others represented in the exhibition reinforce the fact that the Blue Mountains has historically been a drawcard for artists, with a long list of acclaimed practitioners from all art disciplines making the Mountains their home and basing their studios in the region. The Collection exhibition is a great achievement for the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre and it is hoped that a Collection show can be an annual fixture on the Gallery’s program, showcasing new acquisitions and recording the Collection as it grows in size and reputation. The Collection will be shown at Blue Mountains City Art Gallery from 11 June to 24 July. With your assistance we hope to purchase a new work for our Collection, Euan Mcleod’s Jenolan Caves.

8 WEEK COURSE: PRINTMAKING FOR BEGINNERS WITH ARTIST LIZ PERFECT THURSDAYS 28 JULY – 15 SEPTEMBER 10AM – 1PM Learn how to use three different printmaking mediums: silkscreen, relief printing and intaglio. This course introduces the beginner to a range of methods and materials necessary to enable them to use and experiment with the three mediums being taught. Students will produce a diverse body of work using different methods of printmaking.
