CELEBRATING PRINT Blue Mountains Cultural Centre has curated three printmaking exhibitions to join the Print Council of Australia (PCA) in celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2016. This suite of exhibitions brings together works by over 70 Australian printmakers from the 1960s to now. The first exhibition, Tracing the Line, is a selection of 50 works from the Print Council of Australia’s Collection that emphasises the historical development of printmaking practice in Australia since 1967, when they began their collection. It also includes the PCA commissioned works for 2016. Our feature exhibition, As far as the eye can see, presents work from outstanding Australian printmakers investigating their relationship to the Australian landscape. The artists express their stories and relationships to their terrain through a variety of print media. Australia is a large JANET PARKER-SMITH The Vanishing Point (detail) 2016, digital print on archival paper, from As far as the eye can see
country and many have not experienced the multitude of landscapes that occur within it. For the Blue Mountains, the relationship to the plateau, the escarpment, the valley and the gorge is particularly special as we live within a World Heritage National Park. Other parts of Australia are equally special, and the works here not only highlight this but also show a glimpse into some of the very distinctive environments that artists are experiencing now. In collaboration with Cicada Press at UNSW Art & Design, Blue Mountains artists Chris Tobin and Judith Martinez have attended a printmaking residency with custom printer Michael 22 • Blue Mountains City Art Gallery
Kempson in order to develop their works for As far as the eye can see. The artists have travelled regularly to Paddington to work with Michael on their etching plates that will be printed by Cicada Press for the exhibition. This amazing opportunity supports the ongoing careers of these two artists from our region. The third in the suite of print exhibitions is a selection of landscape themed works from the Cicada Press Collection that compliments the other two exhibitions. Together these three exhibitions explore a range of contemporary print practice, historical print process, print collecting and custom printing.
