FROM THE DIRECTOR The 5th anniversary celebrations at the Cultural Centre are well underway, with the major exhibition Landmarks: Featuring Works from the John Kaldor Family Collection at the Art Gallery of NSW attracting large audiences. Following Landmarks we will see a media installation, Wildēornes Land by acclaimed artist Nicole Welch, alongside this year’s entries to Sculpture Otherwise, a partnership exhibition with the Sculpture at Scenic World program. It gives me great pleasure to confirm that through a partnership with Tweed Regional Gallery the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery has secured David Hockney: Words and Pictures from the British Council in the UK. This is the first time this international exhibition has travelled to Australia and it will only visit the two partnering galleries. See works by one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century right here in the Blue Mountains from 14 October to 3 December.

We have three exciting collection development projects this year: with thanks to a significant donation, we are commissioning local artist James Blackwell to complete a major work for the Collection; the inaugural Honouring Country Program will see a new video work by Blue Mountains indigenous artist John South on display in the lounge; and a sculpture will be commissioned for permanent display on the Cultural Centre’s viewing platform. These projects will see the Cultural Centre Collection continue to be a great asset for the city. The Blue Mountains Theatre & Community Hub continues to attract some of Australia’s biggest entertainment stars with Arj Barker, Stewart D’Arrietta and Baby Et LuLu to name a few. Elizabeth is also an emerging artist, with her practice based in photo-media, video and installation.

World Heritage Exhibition In 2000 the Greater Blue Mountains Area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of the exceptional diversity and integrity of its eucalypt forest communities. The permanent World Heritage Exhibition: Into the Blue features high-tech interactive exhibitions exploring the natural and social landscapes of this unique area. NICOLE WELCH WILDĒORNES LAND 1 APRIL – 7 MAY Nicole Welch’s Wildēornes Land is an ambitious, monumental cinematic exhibition combining installation, photography and moving image that investigates the Blue Mountains wilderness from a historical, cultural and ecological viewpoint. A CONVICT IN THE FAMILY? 13 MAY – 25 JUNE Was your ancestor transported for a pittance? A convict in the family? showcases the rich, largescale photographs of documentary photographer Mine Konakci. The works reveal the connections between convict settlers, their direct descendants and the petty crimes that changed the course of their families’ histories. Drawn from a diverse crosssection of the community, sitters have been photographed alongside a representation of the item, or items, stolen by their ancestors. COLLECTORS’ EDITION #4 13 MAY – 28 MAY This popular fundraiser exhibition supports the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre’s Collection Acquisition Fund. Since its inception in 2014, more than 250 artworks have been exhibited and auctioned, with the proceeds being used to acquire new works for the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Collection. This year over 80 original artworks by prominent artists will be for sale through silent auction. HOW IT WORKS All Collectors’ Edition #4 works are for sale through silent auction. Bidding opens at the exhibition launch on Friday 12 May and final bids are recorded at the closing function on Friday 26 May, at the ring of the 7pm bell. At this time, the five works that have attracted the highest bids are verbally auctioned. Each artwork is successfully purchased by the bidder with the highest bid at the close of the silent and verbal auctions.
To receive a bidder number you must register with our staff in the Gallery during the exhibition period. A registration fee applies to all bidders – $5 [inc GST], which then includes free entry to the gallery for the remainder of the exhibition. IMAGE: Silversalt

LANDMARKS: FEATURING WORKS FROM THE JOHN KALDOR FAMILY COLLECTION AT THE ART GALLERY OF NSW Landscape in art has always had the capacity to embody more than the appearance of the environment. Artists have considered the place of humanity within the natural order and how it feels to be within the environment, not only objectively observing it from a distance but also through a frame. The romantic idea of entering a landscape metaphorically acknowledged the limitations of simply trying to capture the appearance of it. In the late 20th century, conceptual artists found various ways of thinking about the land and the complex experience of being in it without necessarily making a picture of it. After all, landscape is something you inhabit, smell, hear, feel underfoot and in the wind. How on earth can you paint and frame that? At the same time, Land Art emerged, in which artists undertook

actions in the landscape or co-opted objects found in the bush to stand in as an experience metonymically (i.e., making things appear by showing a part of the thing or an associated thing). In this exhibition a selection of late 20th and early 21st century artists create new ways of thinking about human presence in the landscape. The works have all been selected from the holdings of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, including some important examples from the astonishing gift to the gallery of the John Kaldor Family Collection. The John Kaldor Family Collection has lent a number of groundbreaking works including the Bulgarian/ American artist team Christo and Jeanne-Claude with macquettes for their 1969 wrapping of Little Bay and other projects. The English sculptor Richard Long also has several
examples of drawing, photography, text and sculpture created while he, like Christo and Jeanne-Claude, took up Kaldor’s invitation to participate in the John Kaldor projects. Two massive photographic works by the German photographer Andreas Gursky are also from the John Kaldor Family Collection. Works from the Art Gallery of New South Wales collections include major examples of Catalan artist Perejaume, Australian painter Imants Tillers, photographs by Malaysian/Australian Simryn Gill, and performance documentation of work by English sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. In addition to the works from the Art Gallery of New South Wales and with the support of Arts NSW, renowned Blue Mountains artists Sean Cordeiro and Claire Healy have been commissioned to produce a work specifically related to the
Australian landscape vernacular. Cordeiro and Healy have created a large scale installation that references a lagerphone. The piece comments on issues of human engagement with the land from indigenous history to early European settlement. Landmarks is open at Blue Mountains City Art Gallery until 19 March. The Collection The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Collection has seen solid growth over the last six months thanks to numerous artwork donations by artists and benefactors as well as purchases made using funds from the Cultural Centre’s Collection Acquisition Fund. Donations by artists Euan Macleod, Robert Malherbe and Leo Robba have been complemented with the purchase works by Euan MacLeod and Chris Tobin. A generous legacy from the estate of the late William Scrymgeour Tatlow has boosted our collection fund and we thank both the relatives of Mr Scrymgeour Tatlow and the executors of his estate for their commitment to the Collection. It is through the support of such donations that the Collection continues to grow to be both a resource for future generations and 22 • Blue Mountains City Cultural Art Gallery Centre Blue Mountains City Art Gallery
a valuable asset to the city of the Blue Mountains. 2017 will see continued collecting activity by the Cultural Centre with the planned commissioning of a major sculptural work for the central courtyard and viewing platform. This work is hoped to be a major statement piece that will enliven and activate the area, further reiterating the Cultural Centre’s intent to grow a collection that is dynamic and not static, seen and not hidden, and celebrated by all.

Public Programs 8 WEEK PRINTMAKING COURSE WITH LIZ PERFECT THURSDAYS 16 FEBRUARY – 6 APRIL 10AM - 1PM Produce a diverse body of work as you learn how to use three different printmaking mediums: Etching, where you will develop tone as well as line; Silkscreen, where you will build images with layers of colour; and Relief printing, with the choice of woodcut or lino. The course is designed to encourage experimentation and gives the opportunity to explore how your work is shaped and transformed in response to each medium. This course will introduce the beginner to a range of methods and materials. For the more practised printmaker, this course 26 • Blue Mountains Cultural Centre
will offer extension with woodcut relief printing as well as discovering how you can combine more than one kind of printmaking in individual artworks. Please note, water-based inks will be used and when etching. Students will be using nontoxic etching solutions, non-rosen based aquatint and inks that safely clean up in water. $300 |$270 InSight Members.

ABOUT LIZ PERFECT Liz studied her BA (Hons) in Painting and Printmaking at the Central School of Art in London, going on to win post-graduate scholarships to paint and print in Italy. In 2015 she graduated with a Master of Art in Printmaking at UNSW Art & Design.

5 Week Access Program INSPIRED BY ART WEDNESDAYS 1 FEBRUARY – 1 MARCH 10:30AM – 12:30PM Blue Mountains Cultural Centre’s Access Program: Inspired by Art is an inclusive class open to all ages and abilities. Participants will join artist Clare Delaney for a tour of the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery followed by a mixed media art making workshop inspired by their Gallery visit. Each week students will learn a new skill and also build upon the skills they learnt from the previous week. Students must be able to have an attention span of 2hrs. $75/$65 InSight Members. 9 WEEK DRAWING & PAINTING INTERIORS COURSE FOR BEGINNERS WITH LOCAL ARTIST ROWEN MATTHEWS WEDNESDAYS 15 MARCH – 5 APRIL (FOLLOWED BY A 2 WEEK BREAK), RECOMMENCING 26 APRIL – 24 MAY 10:30AM – 1PM Learn to compose exciting, subtle drawings and paintings of interiors and the objects that have traditionally made up interior studies. In this course you will gain an understanding of the methods of Johannes Vermeer,
Grace Cossington Smith, Margaret Olley, Henri Matisse, Peter Godwin, Luke Sciberras, and more. Beginning with basics, colour, form, tone and perspective are explained simply and clearly. Students will then explore in greater detail the relationship of shape and colour, using light to observe variations in tone that aid drawing and painting depth of field.

The Gallery Café The Gallery Café has enjoyed great success delivering a traditional Ploughman's Lunch. With vintage cheddar cheese, pickles, double smoked ham and crispy rustic baguette, the Ploughman’s is often accompanied by a cold Badlands Pale Ale from Orange in NSW. Many customers also include a

delicious, traditional Yorkshire pork pie, handmade in Sydney by Sue Patchett. Raised in the UK, Sue moved to Yorkshire to train as an apprentice under the watchful-eye of an award-winning master butcher. His trade secrets were passed to Sue, who moved to Sydney in 1982 and opened Patchett’s Pies. Sue’s pork pies are on sale in the café and are
served with Branston Pickle. We also offer a delicious vegetarian version of the Ploughman’s Lunch.
