FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to another fantastic issue of our InSight magazine. This issue is packed full of information on upcoming Cultural Centre exhibitions from Blue Mountains artists as well as travelling exhibitions from across Australia that are sure to enthral and inspire visitors. Our feature exhibition is the long awaited National Photographic Portrait Prize 2017, travelling from the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. This popular exhibition is celebrating its 10th year and features the work of 49 finalists from a field of nearly 3,000 entries. Showcasing the work of Australia’s finest portrait photographers, the exhibition will be on show from 1 July to 13 August. Other touring exhibitions include A convict in the family? from Sydney
Living Museums, documenting fascinating stories of convict heritage, and Tracey Moffatt from the MAMA Collection, a series of works documenting one of Australia’s most successful contemporary international artists. Kurt Sorensen’s haunting photography, Julie Harris’ landscape paintings and Leahlani Johnson’s site specific installations will all be on show through solo exhibitions, ensuring a packed program from June to September. In closing, I urge you to save the date for our official Birthday Weekend on 18 and 19 November, where we celebrate five years of the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre with a series of free events and activities at the Centre. HONOURING COUNTRY SHARING OUR STORIES The Blue Mountains City Council’s Environment & Culture Branch, Blue Mountains Cultural Centre and the BMCC Aboriginal Advisory Committee launched the Honouring Country – Sharing our Stories program to commission a new video or photography work from local Blue Mountains Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander artists. This project has been funded by Blue Mountains City Council through the Bicentennial Crossing of the Blue Mountains program, through an initiative aimed specifically at reflecting on Aboriginal perspectives of the crossings. Local artist John South from the Barkindji Nation was commissioned for the Honouring Country -Sharing our Stories program 2017 with his video work Skyworld. John South used a site known as the Water Lily Pond in Faulconbridge,
formally a man-made quarry from the 1860s located between the railway tracks and the Great Western Highway, as a point of investigation for his video work Skyworld. The quarry was used to source sandstone for the Blue Mountains railway construction, a major milestone in infrastructure development. Once abandoned, the quarry filled with water and eventually turned into a pond which became the ideal environment for water lilies to grow.
DRONE PHOTO SHOOT Tim Deyzel of Stately Drones recently completed a drone photo shoot of the Cultural Centre, capturing amazing aerial images of the building. The panorama photography has been linked to Google Maps. Tim’s state-ofthe-art drones completed fly throughs of the Gallery and captured views of the Cultural Centre from a height of 100 meters. The videos will be available soon on our website.

World Heritage Exhibition In 2000 the Greater Blue Mountains Area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of the exceptional diversity and integrity of its eucalypt forest communities. The permanent World Heritage Exhibition: Into the Blue features high-tech interactive exhibitions exploring the natural and social landscapes of this unique area. Audiences are invited to navigate their way through these stories through an immersive exhibition experience, introducing them to the richness and wonders of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

A CONVICT IN THE FAMILY? 13 MAY – 25 JUNE Was your ancestor transported for a pittance? A convict in the family? showcases the rich, largescale photographs of documentary photographer Mine Konakci. The works reveal the connections between convict settlers, their direct descendants and the petty crimes that changed the course of their families’ histories. Drawn from a diverse cross-section of the community, sitters have been photographed alongside a representation of the item, or items, stolen by their ancestors. KURT SORENSEN THE SOLITUDE IS DESOLATION 13 MAY – 2 JULY Drawing upon the historical newspaper account of the disappearance of David and Emily Jane Joel near Wentworth Falls in 1918, Kurt Sorensen combines experimental analogue photography, video and sound works to explore the often uneasy relationship of colonial European settlers with the Blue Mountains environment. TRACEY MOFFATT FROM THE MAMA COLLECTION 8 JULY – 13 AUGUST Tracey Moffatt is one of Australia's most successful international artists, known for her film, photography and video works. Drawing on cinema, television and the media, her art is equally inspired by popular culture, recollections from her childhood and art history. The exhibition is drawn from the collection of the Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA), and features photographs from Moffatt's Something More, Scarred for Life and Some Lads series. Moffatt began her career as an experimental filmmaker and producer of music videos, and she continued making films after establishing herself

as an artist. She first came to prominence in the Australian art world with her series Something More. Commissioned in 1989 by the Albury Regional Art Gallery, now MAMA, the series set the tone and themes for much of Moffatt's later work and is accompanied by other works from the MAMA collection. JULIE HARRIS THE STRIP SUITE 19 AUGUST – 8 OCTOBER For this exhibition Julie Harris combines recent abstract paintings and sculptural pieces all referencing the same motif: the strip or ribbon. Harris has intuitively incorporated this linear element in ever increasing ways over the last three years, layering it onto a more organic ground. The motif signifies her immediate environment in its most basic form – whether vertical or horizontal, the strips describe features such as: her studio louvre window, musical scores, birdsong, garden elements and the weather. This motif also references Harris’ process of stripping back any recognisable imagery or formalist structure from the canvas and allowing the paint residue to create the final work. LEAHLANI JOHNSON HOWEVER LATE IT MAY SEEM 19 AUGUST - 8 OCTOBER However late it may seem is an exhibition of new, site specific installation work that combines ceramics, painting, plant material and moving image to investigate the paradoxical nature of time. Johnson juxtaposes various mediums within her installations to reveal the opposing durational qualities of stillness, temporality and flux. She explores different forms of timekeeping, with the ceramic elements revealing gestures of everyday objects within a static form; the moving images convey a sense of compressed time; and the plant works, created through a labour intensive process, will change with time and alter colour, shape and texture. The combination of these diverse mediums allows time to be re-imagined from a linear formation into a more malleable substance. NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT PRIZE 2017 After months of anticipation, the winner for the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2017 has been announced with renowned Sydney portrait photographer Gary Grealy taking out the award. George Fetting, guest judge for the 2017 Prize, was entranced with the evocative nature of the winning portrait, Richard Morecroft and Alison Mackay. ‘Gary Grealy’s portrait is a wonderful collaboration with the sitters, Richard and Alison. He has beautifully conveyed a mixture of subdued emotions in a simple, direct but captivating image,’ said Fetting. ‘For me, the contrasting facial expressions, body language and soft side lighting combine to produce a painterly quality of a time gone by. It’s a meticulous work cloaked in curiosity and intrigue, with the furtive smile to seduce the viewer.’

ABOUT THE WINNING WORK
‘When I began making portraits of artists in the 90s, the thrill of entering the domain of creativity filled me with excitement, and I must admit a little envy at the talent I saw. I began making portraits of artists for no other reason than the love of art.’
Richard Morecroft is a former ABC news presenter and an accomplished landscape photographer, with his work held in The Australian Parliament House Collection. Alison Mackay is a masterful painter – she has works in major collections and has been a finalist in many Australian art prizes, as well as running art workshops with numerous leading Australian artists. Grealy’s portrait of Richard and Alison is about a partnership in life and work. The pair have co-authored books and created features for magazines; they also jointly and individually exhibit their art.
‘The National Photographic Portrait Prize gave me a purpose to continue to make portraits of artists, gallery directors and philanthropists, and as a result my portraits have been exhibited eight times in the ten year history of the prize.’ Blue Mountains City Art Gallery will be the first venue on the National Photographic Portrait Prize tour and display the exhibition from 1 July – 13 August 2017.

The Collection The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Collection continues to grow through the generosity of benefactors, donors and artists. Our annual fundraiser, Collectors' Edition, has been a huge success with many participating artists generously donating their time to produce A5 artworks for auction. With proceeds going to the Collection Acquisition Fund, this is a great way for the Cultural Centre to acquire works for future exhibitions while at the same time honouring the many artists who have contributed to the exhibition program to date. This year, funds raised have gone towards aquiring a work by nationally renowned artist Locust Jones.

NEW ACQUISITION FOR THE BLUE MOUNTAINS CULTURAL CENTRE COLLECTION: ANDREW MERRY XENO EUCALYPTUS #4 In the month of April, local artist Andrew Merry's donation of Xeno Eucalyptus #4 was accepted into the Blue Mountains Cutlrual Centre Collection. This large photographic work has just finished touring nationally with the exhibition Country & Western; however, it was previously shown in Merry’s solo exhibition Xeno Eucalyptus at Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in 2013. BRAEMAR GALLERY EXHIBITION PROGRAM CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS APPLICATIONS OPEN MONDAY 5 JUNE – MONDAY 14 AUGUST 2017 Artists are invited to submit proposals for the 2018 Braemar Gallery Exhibition Program. Opened in 1988, Braemar Gallery is located in the historic Braemar House, Springwood. It functions as a community gallery, hosting changing exhibitions. The gallery is a valuable community venue with a particular interest in displaying works by local artists. Over time, the gallery has become well known for exhibiting high standard artworks of various mediums.

FROM THE HUB We can hardly believe that it has been over two years since the Blue Mountains Theatre opened, and what a two years it has been! From steady beginnings the program has developed and grown, ensuring that the Blue Mountains community and tourists have access to a diverse and exhilarating theatre program. Just some of the highlights of the past two years have included: Henry Rollins (who kicked off his Australian tour right here in Springwood!); The Necks; Through a Glass Onion starring John Waters; comedian Ahn Do in three sold out shows; Oud-player extraordinaire Joseph Tawadros; and the delightful Baby et Lulu.
Australian debut performance of award-winning Syrian-American composer and pianist Malek Jandali; the much-loved songs of Doris Day are brought to life by the fabulous and talented Melinda Schneider in Melinda Does Doris; we travel to the heart of Russia when the internationally acclaimed Sydney Balalaika Orchestra present Siberian Adventure; and an extravaganza of comedy too, including The Umbilical Brothers, Kitty Flanagan and the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase.
