FROM THE DIRECTOR This issue of InSight Magazine marks a fantastic milestone for Blue Mountains Cultural Centre as we celebrate our 5th birthday. Over the last 5 years we have welcomed over 550,000 visitors to the Centre, exhibited over 75 major exhibitions from local, national and international artists and started to grow a Collection that is destined to be one of the most important cultural assets for the city. I take this opportunity to thank our InSight and Patron Members, now numbering over 1,400, who have supported us each year. I would also like to acknowledge our Establishment Committee members, past and present, who have helped guide the Centre to the strong position that we are now in, and most importantly our many volunteers over the years who have welcomed our visitors, assisted staff and been great ambassadors for both the Cultural Centre and the artistic community of the Mountains.
Adding further to the Cultural Centre’s achievements, we will be exhibiting the internationally acclaimed exhibition David Hockney: Words & Pictures from 14 October to 3 December. This exhibition has been brought to Australia through a partnership between the Cultural Centre and Tweed Regional Gallery, the only two venues to showcase this exhibition before it returns to the UK. I urge you to take the rare opportunity to see original works by one of Britain’s most influential artists of the 20th century, right here in the Blue Mountains. Julie Paterson CLOTH: FROM SEEDS TO BLOOM 9 DECEMBER – 28 JANUARY Cloth: From Seeds to Bloom traces 20 years of work from one of Australia's most influential textile designers and local Blue Mountains resident, Julie Paterson. Drawing inspiration from the Australian bush, Paterson's stunning fabrics are a riot of colour, floral forms, and patterns. Achieving commercial success through design excellence, her designs are highly prized and sought after, with short batch productions quickly snapped up by avid collectors, interior decorators, and commercial clients. The exhibition will focus on nine key textile groupings – the first called Seeds and the last one Bloom.

And now she has simplified her methods and created a workshop. She calls it LookDrawPrint, an imperfect workshop for the creatively curious.

HEIDI AXELSEN & HUGO MOLINE THE VISITORS 9 DECEMBER – 14 JANUARY The Visitors explores alternative means of encounter and exchange between human and botanical worlds. Rather than simply using plants to do things for us, could we work for them? The exhibition investigates the potential of this ‘Plant agency’ in Katoomba and its surrounds. Heidi Axelsen and Hugo Moline work across architecture, installation, social process and situated public art. Through an interest in modes of mobility, occupation and ownership, their work engages with specific places and asks if the social, political and ecological relationships could be re-framed or re-arranged. MOVING HISTORIES // FUTURE PROJECTIONS 20 JANUARY – 11 MARCH Moving Histories // Future Projections brings together some of Australia’s leading female contemporary artists working across screen based media including Mikala Dwyer and Justene Williams, Amala Groom, Deborah Kelly, Kate Blackmore and Jacinta Tobin, Joan Ross, Soda_Jerk, Angelica Mesiti and Caroline Garcia, curated by Kelly Doley and Diana Baker-Smith of Barbara Cleveland (formally Brown Council). The artists in Moving Histories // Future Projections approach their subject matter in a variety of ways – they turn the camera on themselves, re-stage historical events or reimagine alternative futures through
speculative accounts of the past. Through repetition, montage and mimicry, they explore a space where time folds in on itself and back again, each looking back while also moving forward. Collectively and individually they act as historians, archivists and archaeologists - excavating historical materials, digging through archives and channeling the past to make new connections across time and space. DAVID HOCKNEY: WORDS & PICTURES This international exhibition, drawn from the British Council Collection, focuses on the four major suites of prints produced by David Hockney over a sixteen year period from 1961 - 1977: A Rake’s Progress; Illustrations for 14 Poems by C.P. Cavafy; Illustrations for Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm, and The Blue Guitar. United by their reference to historical works of literature and art, these prints were all produced during the first two decades of Hockney’s career when he established his international reputation as a Pop artist. In A Rake’s Progress, Hockney transposed the moral tale of a squandered life based on William Hogarth’s late eighteenth century series of the same name, onto his own semi-autobiographical tales of a summer spent in New York.
Hockney’s admiration for the poetry of C.P Cavafy, the Greek poet of Alexandria, inspired him to illustrate fourteen of Cavafy’s poems, capturing the sensuality of the original poetry with intimate drawings of his friends in London. His attraction to the simple direct style of writing in the world famous fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm was to influence one of Hockney’s most ambitious printmaking projects, a series of eighty etchings illustrating six titles, thirty-nine of which were published by Petersburg Press in 1970. The final suite The Blue Guitar, 1977, was based on the poem The Man with the Blue Guitar by the American poet Wallace Stevens, who had in his time been inspired by Picasso. The series of twenty colourful etchings with their vast array of imagery and styles are homage to the Spanish master.
The exhibition is enhanced by a display of Hockney’s works on loan from the personal collection of the artist’s brother John Hockney. The Collection The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Collection has continued to grow with two recent acquisitions of works by Locust Jones. Locust lives and works in the Blue Mountains and is well known for his work referencing global current affairs and political flash points. Locust has held over 25 solo exhibitions within Australia and internationally, and in 2015 exhibited his exhibition titled A Week In the Life of the World at Blue Mountains Cultural Centre. The two works on paper acquired by the Cultural Centre are titled Keep on spinning and Damaged Goods and were produced between 2014 and 2015 respectively. These purchases were made possible with funds raised through the 2017 Collectors' Edition fundraiser held at the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery. Many regular visitors to the Gallery will remember local artist Kurt Sorensen’s recent exhibition of
haunting photographs titled The Solitude is Desolation. The series of photographs drew upon the historic newspaper account of the disappearance of David and Emily Jane Joel near Wentworth Falls in 1918. Kurt Sorensen combined experimental analogue photography, video and sound works to explore the often uneasy relationship of colonial European settlers with the Blue Mountains environment. The popularity of the exhibition together with the strong Blue Mountains referencing of the subject matter led to the acquisition of the feature
work of the exhibition titled I get some terrible frights here. This C-type photographic print mounted on aluminium sheet is a fantastic fit for the Collection and joins existing photographic works by Andrew Merry and Nicole Welch. Braemar Gallery is currently seeking volunteers to assist with the operations of the community gallery. The Volunteer Team provides invaluable support to the Braemar Gallery Management Committee by undertaking a range of light duties and interesting tasks. No experience is necessary, just an appreciation of art and an eagerness to greet visitors with a friendly smile and provide general information as required. Work within a unique, historic and vibrant arts facility and connect with artists, volunteers, the local community and visitors from far and wide.

FROM THE HUB What a year it has been for the Blue Mountains Theatre. Comedy has proved to be a smash hit – the year began with three sold out performances of Ahn Do’s The Happiest Refugee Live, and continued in the same, side-splitting path with Kitty Flanagan’s Smashing selling out three shows and James Valentine’s Afternoons Tonight!, Sydney Comedy Festival Roadshow and Akmal playing to full houses. The laughs keep on coming with Lawrence Mooney, best-known as host of ABC TV’s Dirty Laundry Live and winner of best show at both Sydney and Melbourne Comedy Festivals, presenting his show Like Literally on 17 November. And we are thrilled to announce those mistresses of eccentric humour, the Kransky Sisters, will perform A Very Kransky Christmas here in the Blue Mountains on 6 December.
But it’s not all about comedy, we’re also particularly thrilled to have the internationally renowned Russian National Ballet Theatre for two nights in December performing the perennial Christmas classic The Nutcracker on 9 December, followed by Romeo & Juliet on 10 December. Originating a little closer to home, the Blue Mountains Musical Society presents The Little Mermaid; and local heroes The Robertson Brothers announced a second performance of their show The Everly Brothers & Buddy Holly in Concert on 25 November.
