FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to issue 16 of InSight Magazine. The start of 2018 has seen a focus on the Cultural Centre Collection as we install in the central courtyard our long awaited sculpture Wind, Stone – Earth and Sky by Koichi Ishino, display The Collection: New Acquisitions in the Gallery and run our ever anticipated Collectors' Edition fundraising show that auctions over 80 artworks by participating artists. This year’s fundraiser once again sees big names of the art world participating, and provides not only a great opportunity to collect original artwork for your own collection but also helps the Cultural Centre grow a collection of national significance. Our World Heritage Artist in Residence Program continues in 2018.
This valuable program is made possible through a partnership between the Cultural Centre and BigCi (Bilpin International Ground for Creative Initiatives) whereby selected artists are provided accommodation, working space and exhibition space to develop work based on their unique experiences of the Blue Mountains region. This year we welcome Karen Miranda Abel from Canada. Abel's residency focus is geodiversity and her exhibition will be on show at the Cultural Centre between 24 March and 6 May. I hope you enjoy this edition of InSight Magazine and encourage you to participate in one or more of the great arts and cultural events on offer in the Blue Mountains. NEW PUBLIC ART COMMISSION Through a generous donation from the late William Scrymgeour Tatlow, the Cultural Centre has achieved a long awaited goal of commissioning a significant, site specific sculpture for the central courtyard. A call for submissions was undertaken in February of 2017, resulting in 38 applications being received from across Australia. Renowned sculptor Koichi Ishino was selected to complete his proposed work, titled Wind, Stone – Earth and Sky. The sculpture is constructed from stainless steel and black granite in Ishino's trademark process of bonding the two materials with original inlay techniques. These techniques result in surfaces that morph from stone to steel across perfectly flat planes in a seemingly impossible junction. The mirrored stainless steel reflects the ever changing skyscape and contrasts with the solidity of the black granite, grounding the sculpture to the earth. Wind, Stone – Earth and Sky has been designed to both reflect the changing
elements of the Blue Mountains and reference the relationship between the mountains and the sky. Born in Japan, Ishino immigrated to Australia in 2009 and now lives and works in Gosford, NSW. He graduated from Kyoto City University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1976 and has been a full time artist for over 25 years. A regular participatant in Sculpture by the Sea in Bondi and Cottelsoe since 2001, Ishino was awarded the Waverley Council Mayor’s Prize, 2009. Ishino has gained an international reputation as an artist. He has completed numerous significant public international commissions and has been the recipient of numerous prizes, including the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art Award (1997) and the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art Award (1995). Wind, Stone – Earth and Sky is the 6th public art commission by the Cultural Centre and is on public display in the central courtyard. World Heritage Exhibition In 2000 the Greater Blue Mountains Area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of the exceptional diversity and integrity of its eucalypt forest communities. The permanent World Heritage Exhibition: Into the Blue features high-tech interactive exhibitions exploring the natural and social landscapes of this unique area. Audiences are invited to navigate their way through these stories through an immersive exhibition experience, introducing them to the richness and wonders of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

MOVING HISTORIES // FUTURE PROJECTIONS 20 JANUARY – 11 MARCH Moving Histories // Future Projections brings together some of Australia’s leading female contemporary artists working across screen based media including Mikala Dwyer and Justene Williams, Amala Groom, Deborah Kelly, Kate Blackmore and Jacinta Tobin, Joan Ross, Soda_Jerk, Angelica Mesiti and Caroline Garcia, curated by Kelly Doley and Diana Baker-Smith of Barbara Cleveland (formally Brown Council). The artists in Moving Histories // Future Projections approach their subject matter in a variety of ways – they turn the camera on themselves, re-stage historical events or reimagine alternative futures through

speculative accounts of the past. Through repetition, montage and mimicry, they explore a space where time folds in on itself and back again, each looking back while also moving forward. Collectively and individually they act as historians, archivists and archaeologists - excavating historical materials, digging through archives and channeling the past to make new connections across time and space. KAREN MIRANDA ABEL LIMINAL REFUGIA 24 MARCH – 6 MAY In recognition of the significance and outstanding beauty of Australia’s Greater Blue Mountains UNESCO World Heritage Area, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre hosts the World Heritage Artist in Residence Program. This initiative awards a 6-week artist residency to one artist at Bilpin international ground for Creative initiatives, to create a new body of work in response to the World Heritage Area followed by a solo exhibition at the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery. Canadian artist Karen Miranda Abel was selected as the 2017-2018 World Heritage Artist in Residence. Her exhibition Liminal Refugia is an atmospheric, embodied reflection on the perpetual interrelationships between earth (stone), water (rain) and fire (sunlight) that manifest in the ancient Triassic sandstone caves of the Greater Blue Mountains. THE GEODIVERSITY PROJECT Karen Miranda Abel invites residents and visitors in the Blue Mountains region to be part of a participatory art project about the geodiversity of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. Abel will be creating an elemental installation from small samples of earth collected by the public to be exhibited as part of Liminal Refugia. Each artwork is successfully purchased by the bidder with the highest bid at the close of the silent and verbal auctions.

MARY ALICE EVATT ART FOR THE PEOPLE 12 MAY – 24 JUNE Mary Alice Evatt, artist and cultural advocate, was married to Dr. Herbert Vere ‘Doc’ Evatt, Justice of the High Court of Australia and prominent Labor party politician. Evatt was an influential and committed advocate of Australian contemporary art. In 1943 she was appointed a trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and continued as the sole female member of the board until 1970. The exhibition features works from private and public collections and provides the unique opportunity to view works acquired and bequeathed by the Evatts. This includes works by artists such as Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck and Amedeo Modigliani, as well as works by some of Evatt’s friends, including Margaret Olley, John Coburn, Moya Dyring and Tom Gleghorn. OUT OF BOUNDS 19 MAY – 1 JULY Out of Bounds, featuring Rachel Peachey & Paul Mosig, Heidi Axelsen & Hugo Moline, Hannah Bath, Chris Carmody and Nick McKinlay, uses play and field studies as creative research tools to look at how the built environment affects the way we learn, the way we process ideas, the way we relate to each other and the way we impose boundaries on our behaviour. The artists use archetypal children’s play structures as a design reference and local parks as field sites for experimentation. NEW ACQUISITION FOR THE BLUE MOUNTAINS CULTURAL CENTRE COLLECTION: JAMES BLACKWELL Since its launch in March 2014, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Collection has been growing steadily and now contains over 110 artworks by over 45 artists of local, national and international repute. Unlike many regional gallery collections the Cultural Centre’s Collection is not associated with an art prize. The Collection is curated, with all artworks acquired through careful selection by the Cultural Centre’s Advisory Committee. This method of collecting ensures the integrity of the Collection as it grows and guarantees all artworks acquired have been considered based on their relevance to the Collection as a whole and their ability to be exhibited on a regular basis. Many of the artworks in the Collection have been acquired through the generosity of artists and patrons who value the development of a

public art collection for the Blue Mountains. With limited collection acquisition funds, it is always exciting when a donation is made that allows the Collection to take a significant step forward. In December of 2016 such a moment occurred when Blue Mountains resident David Coleby expressed an interest in commissioning artist James Blackwell to produce a work for the Collection. Almost twelve months later the Cultural Centre accepted a set of four stunning James Blackwell artworks that showcase the artist’s intricate attention to detail and refined design sense. The generosity of both David Coleby, for his commitment to growing the Cultural Centre Collection, and James Blackwell, for his efforts in completing the commission, has resulted in a major acquisition that will be enjoyed for generations to come.

THE ART OF CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY WITH ARTIST XUEYI BAI 7 WEEK COURSE TUESDAYS 13 FEBRUARY – 27 MARCH 1:30PM – 3PM The ancient art of Chinese calligraphy is traditionally said to be like meditation; quieting the heart and calming the mind by moving its qi or energy in rhythm with the movement of the brush. Learn to control a soft brush on rice paper, and use it to form bold yet delicate strokes that create

harmonious and elegant Chinese characters. At the end of the course, you will have meaningful works of your own to take home and the technique and appreciation to make calligraphy an everyday skill that is a pleasure to perform and a delight to view. This course is suitable for students of all levels. Beginners will start with the basic movements of dots and strokes on rice paper. More advanced learners will be guided to develop confidence
with the changing of strokes and their cooperation within characters, and will further understand how the heaviness and speed of the brush as well as the space between characters affect the balance of whole works. $175 | $150 InSight Members Materials are included. Each Term students explore a new suite of exhibitions in an inclusive class open to all ages and abilities. Participants will join artist Clare Delaney for a tour of the City Art Gallery followed by a mixed media art making workshop inspired by their Gallery visit. Each week students will engage with art, learn a new skill and build upon the skills they learnt from the previous week to create their own artworks. Collaboration and an open mind are encouraged.

9 WEEK PAINTING THE LANDSCAPE COURSE WITH ARTIST TIM ALLEN WEDNESDAYS, 2 MAY – 27 JUNE 10:30AM – 1PM This workshop covers the many varied creative and technical approaches to the landscape painting tradition. Students will work plein air (taking in the spectacular views from the Cultural Centre) as well as from sketches, photos, memory and imagination. They will explore colour, mark making and composition. Tim will demonstrate many techniques and approaches to the genre; he will introduce and analyse historical and contemporary landscape artists as well as discussing his own work. There will also be individual feedback as students develop their own unique approaches and styles. Blue Mountains Library and Cultural Centre, in partnership with Varuna and the Sydney Writers’ Festival, will host a fabulous, day-long program of literary events for kids and adults. The program will include a special story time from a legend of children’s picture books and a visit from a bestselling children’s author as well as a youth writing workshop. Adults can catch a symposium on climate and the economy, a how-to-get published forum and a special spotlight on Western Sydney writers. All program details and tickets are released on 16 March 2018!
In this workshop you will be introduced to the main principles of ink painting and will learn the central role of water to compose a balanced artwork. You will learn ‘wet on wet’ and ‘wet on dry’ techniques, and will experiment through layering effects to create light and darkness. You will discover various reserve techniques to create depth and texture. This workshop also includes tips for ink management, brush and paper qualities, how to use negative and positive space efficiently. By the end of the workshop you will have produced one A4 and one A3 painting which explore a variety of textures and details.

SUMMER EXPOSURE PRIZE WINNERS After a stellar line-up of exhibitions in 2017, Braemar Gallery finished the year on a high with the annual community exhibition Summer Exposure. The exhibition showcased works from supporters of Braemar Gallery, including previous exhibitors and volunteers, in a vibrant display of local talent. Works featured a range of mediums: oils, watercolour, acrylic, mixed media, sculpture, photography, drawing and textiles. Three artists were awarded sponsored prizes from local businesses ColourArt, Springwood, the Ori Café and the Oriental Hotel. The competitive Director's Choice, selected by Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Director, Paul Brinkman, was awarded to Rachel Hannan for her work Lincoln Rock Winter Sunset. And the ever-popular Viewer's Choice prizes were claimed by Bron Newman for her work
Shallows and Tiffany Beaumont for her sculpture Where's Dorothy?. With 50 participating artists and 79 entries, Summer Exposure is a wonderful community event that celebrates the diversity of creative talent right here in the Blue Mountains. ZENRASA SUNDAY 15 APRIL, 2PM Bronwyn Kirkpatrick – shakuhachi Colin Berryman – sitar Special guest John May - calabash Grounded in traditional Japanese and Indian melodies and rhythms, “Rasa” is that power in music to evoke an emotion, to transport the listener to another place or time, while the traditional music of the shakuhachi is a meditation practice in Japanese “Zen” Buddhism. Colin was a disciple of the late Pandit Ashok Roy; while Bronwyn
is an award-winning Master of the Shakuhachi. Both regularly perform in cross-cultural collaborations: Colin in Eric Whitacre’s Winter and projects such as The Firebird, Intertwine, D’yari (Kurdish); while Bronwyn with the Bell Shakespeare Theatre Company, Sydney Dance Company and TaikOz.

FROM THE HUB 2018 sees the Blue Mountains Theatre head into its fourth year with some incredible international performers and stunningly talented musicians set to grace our stage. The program will be off to a rockin’ start with Jeff Duff’s extraordinary Bowie Unzipped, a must-see for fans of David Bowie. Raymond Crowe: The Unusualist will amaze and delight with his medley of illusion, comedy, magic and artistry. We’ll be presenting a bevy of critically acclaimed musicians when we turn up the heat with passionate and fiery European gypsy ensemble, Faith I Branko and renowned cult band The Necks, who return to the Theatre with their mesmerising soundscapes. Theatre diva Geraldine Turner will grace our stage with her fabulous new show Turner’s Turn. This is a rare chance to
see one of the greats of Australian musical theatre in a most intimate and entertaining cabaret performance. Eclectic world fusion group ZenRasa sees the shakuhachi, calabash and sitar come together for a fascinating concert that promises to be uplifting and joyous.
