FROM THE DIRECTOR It is an exciting time of the year at Blue Mountains Cultural Centre as we celebrate NAIDOC Week with a range of exhibitions and public programs. On the 6th of July we will be launching John South’s exhibition Skyworld, exploring Aboriginal astronomy through film and installations. On the 9th of July we will host the local NAIDOC Awards and annual flag raising ceremony, and in following weeks we will be presenting a wide range of talks, screenings and workshops celebrating Aboriginal culture. The Cultural Centre marks its 100th exhibition since opening in 2012 with the presentation of the feature show Blue Mountains Botanica. This exhibition is a unique collaboration between the Cultural Centre and the
Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust that has enabled the Cultural Centre to borrow rare and fascinating objects from the early colonial period of exploration to the Blue Mountains. Botanical drawings, etchings, books and plant specimens make up this extensive exhibition that has been curated to specifically focus on the unique flora of the Blue Mountains. Timed to coincide with the Leura Gardens Festival, Blue Mountains Botanica will be on show from 25 August to 14 October. Paul Brinkman Director, Blue Mountains Cultural Centre
BLUE MOUNTAINS CULTURAL CENTRE AND SCULPTURE AT SCENIC WORLD PARTNERSHIP EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITY 2018 26 JUNE – 29 JULY Each year one work from the Sculpture at Scenic World exhibition is chosen for the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Exhibition Opportunity, and is displayed for one month at the Cultural Centre after Sculpture at Scenic World concludes. This year, the Exhibition Opportunity was awarded to David Jensz with his work Ripple, to be installed in the Cultural Centre central courtyard from 26 June – 29 July. Ripple is made from recycled corrugated iron, re-configured to create a horizontal plane, with a series of conical trumpet-like depressions that represent anomalies in the fabric of space/time. The geological time frame represented in the sandstone cliffs of the Blue Mountains predates civilisation and extends beyond our everyday
experience. The grandeur of the environment can unite us through a sense of perspective: the immensity of space/time reminds us of the small but integral part we play in the world and the interconnections that link us to our time and reality. The scale of the universe and the limitations of trying to fully comprehend it is one of the primary motivating factors behind Jensz's practice. Cosmologists tell us that our solar system is one of millions in our galaxy and that our galaxy is one of billions in the universe. As large as the visible universe is, apparently we can only see 5% of what is out there. The other 95% is Dark Energy or Dark Matter. World Heritage Exhibition In 2000 the Greater Blue Mountains Area was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of the exceptional diversity and integrity of its eucalypt forest communities. The permanent World Heritage Exhibition: Into the Blue features high-tech interactive exhibitions exploring the natural and social landscapes of this unique area. Audiences are invited to navigate their way through these stories through an immersive exhibition experience, introducing them to the richness and wonders of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

MARY ALICE EVATT ART FOR THE PEOPLE 12 MAY – 24 JUNE Mary Alice Evatt, artist and cultural advocate, was married to Dr. Herbert Vere ‘Doc’ Evatt, Justice of the High Court of Australia and prominent Labor party politician. Evatt was an influential and committed advocate of Australian contemporary art. In 1943 she was appointed a trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and continued as the sole female member of the board until 1970. The exhibition features works from private and public collections and provides the unique opportunity to view works acquired and bequeathed by the Evatts. This includes works by artists such as Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck and Amedeo Modigliani, as well as works by some of Evatt’s friends, including Margaret Olley, John Coburn, Moya Dyring and Tom Gleghorn. OUT OF BOUNDS 19 MAY – 1 JULY Out of Bounds, featuring Rachel Peachey & Paul Mosig, Heidi Axelsen & Hugo Moline, Hannah Bath, Chris Carmody and Nick McKinlay, uses play and field studies as creative research tools to look at how the built environment effects the way we learn, the way we process ideas, the way we relate to each other and the way we impose boundaries on our behaviour. The artists use archetypal children’s play structures as a design reference and local parks as field sites for experimentation. The artists work

JOHN SOUTH: SKYWORLD 30 JUNE – 19 AUGUST Australian Aboriginal cultures are rich with astronomical connections, including sky stories, which are a way of remembering and transmitting important parts of ceremony, law and culture. Skyworld is the spiritual realm beyond the horizon that is part of the Aboriginal cosmology shared across tribes. It is inhabited by Dreamtime ancestors who formed our landscape before transcending into the sky, leaving behind geological reminders, such as rock formations, mountains, plants or animals. Through film and installation John South (Barkindji) explores Aboriginal astronomy and the cultural and spiritual mythologies surrounding the night sky. Through performance, music and storytelling Wagana Aboriginal Dancers will share their contemporary and traditional Aboriginal dances, inspired by the landscape and creation stories of the Blue Mountains and Central NSW West country. OPERATION ART 30 JUNE – 19 AUGUST Operation Art is the premier state wide visual arts exhibition for students from Kindergarten to Year 10. It is a unique contemporary children’s exhibition which encourages students to create artworks for children in hospital. The exhibition focuses on creating a positive environment to aid the healing and recovery process of young patients. The Operation Art Touring Exhibition comprises 50 selected artworks from the 2017 Operation Art Main Exhibition. These works will tour regionally and be on display at Blue Mountains City Art Gallery from 30 June – 19 August 2018. They will then be given to The Children's Hospital at Westmead as part of their permanent collection. KEVINA-JO SMITH NEVER GIVE UP 7 JULY – 19 AUGUST Kevina-Jo Smith’s Never Give Up is an immersive installation, combining film, photographs, textile panels and costumes to enact a collective consciousness around the ever increasing environmental threats facing our planet. The exhibition is formulated as a direct response to Smith’s experience as artist in residence in a remote Indigenous community in the Guna Yala region of Panama. Smith’s art practice is focused on connecting the material world with the imagined – global with local. She weaves an intensely personal visual language as a means of addressing social, environmental and political issues. Her multi-layered installations often incorporate up-cycled and found materials, with each component being delicate and time consuming to create. This slow and labour intense process is Smith’s tribute to the natural world and a ritual against destruction. MYCORRHIZAL FUTURAE - FEROX – INFERIUS 25 AUGUST – 7 OCTOBER Mycorrhizal: Futurae - Ferox – Inferius is Freedom Wilson’s new body of work which raises awareness of the endangered Buttercup Doubletail Orchid (Diuris aequalis). Orchids have evolved highly complex ecological partnerships over millennia. Beneath the soil each plant species depends on a specific species of Mycorrhizal fungus for its existence. Little is known about the optimal environmental conditions that support these fungi, but many can only grow in healthy ecosystems. Wilson participated in botanical surveys and field research in the Kanangra Boyd Wilderness area and in Snow Gum habitat near the

Blue Mountains Botanica 25 AUGUST – 14 OCTOBER For more than two centuries the unique vegetation of the Blue Mountains region has provided a rich treasure trove for some of Australia’s most notable botanists and botanical illustrators. By naming and documenting a myriad of plant species they paved the way for today’s conservation and research efforts. Developed in partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust, Blue Mountains Botanica delves into the history of botanical exploration of the Blue Mountains and features historical botanical illustrations, plant specimen and archival material drawn from the National Herbarium of NSW, the Daniel Solander Library and the Blue

This introductory botanic art course covers the techniques needed to prepare and sketch a botanical subject and build an image using watercolour paint. BLUE MOUNTAINS BOTANICA EXPLORE, COLLECT, CREATE AND DISCOVER Blue Mountains Cultural Centre has partnered with the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust, Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah and the Leura Gardens Festival to celebrate spring in the Blue Mountains across three locations:

BLUE MOUNTAINS CITY ART GALLERY Follow the journey of the first botanical explorers to the Blue Mountains and discover stunning historical plant specimen, botanical illustrations and archival records, which tell the story of the first attempts to document the unique plant world of the region. Joseph Maiden, Allan Cunningham, Robert Brown, George Caley, Isobel Bowden and Margaret Flockton, amongst others, were instrumental in identifying, collecting and naming a large number of plants in the Blue Mountains. These records are of great significance to today’s plant classification, conservation and research efforts and are held in the collections of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Australia’s oldest scientific institution (1816) for botany and horticulture, and the National
Herbarium of New South Wales, which holds Australia’s largest reference collections of botanical specimens. The exhibition will also examine current scientific research and conservation efforts such as the regeneration of the ancient Wollemi Pine in secret locations across the Blue Mountains. The unique landscape and biodiversity of the Blue Mountains has always been a drawcard for artists and creatives, and many of them are inspired by the unique plant life of this region. Alongside the loans from the Royal Botanic Garden collections will be a display of works by contemporary Blue Mountains and Sydney artists and botanical illustrators who incorporate botanical elements in their works. Blue Mountains Botanica will be on display at Blue Mountains City Art Gallery from 25 August to 14 October. Continuing the theme of nature conservation is Freedom Wilson’s Exposé exhibition Mycorrhizal: Futurae - Ferox – Inferius. Wilson champions the importance of biodiversity conservation in the National Parks and Wilderness areas within Australia. The intricacies of Australian plant life and ecological communities within the natural environment are echoed in her drawings, printmaking and installations. Mycorrhizal: Futurae - Ferox – Inferius will be on display at Blue Mountains City Art Gallery from 25 August to 7 October. Coinciding with the exhibitions will be a range of creative workshops, lectures and kids programs, which will be held across the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre and Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah.
BLUE MOUNTAINS BOTANIC GARDEN, MOUNT TOMAH Discover some of the plants on display at Blue Mountains Botanica in their natural environment at the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah. Mount Tomah is the only botanic garden in a World Heritage Area and is home to 21,000 plants and 900 species, including the famous Wollemi Pine. There you can enjoy the Margaret Flockton Award Exhibition from 11 August to 23 September or celebrate one of the Blue Mountains most iconic plants, the Waratah, at the Wild About Waratahs Festival in September. LEURA GARDENS FESTIVAL Enjoy spring in the Blue Mountains and immerse yourself further in all things botanical by visiting some of the most stunning and unique gardens in the region. The gardens of Leura are famous for their magnificent displays of azaleas, rhododendrons, dogwoods, camellias and other cool climate exotics, as well as flowering annuals, perennials and bulbs. The 2018 Leura Gardens Festival will be held for six days over two long weekends: Saturday 29 September – Monday 1 October 2018 (public holiday weekend) and Friday 5 – Sunday 7 October 2018. Gardens are open from 9:30am – 4:30pm daily. Visitors to the Leura Gardens Festival will receive discounted entry into Blue Mountains City Art Gallery. LIVING LINES – COPPER PLATE ETCHING WITH LIZ PERFECT 4 WEEK COURSE THURSDAYS 13 SEPTEMBER – 4 OCTOBER 10AM - 1PM Using botanical illustrations as inspiration, specimens from the Royal Botanic Garden herbarium or favourite plants from your own backyard, Liz Perfect will guide students through the practical and artistic processes of developing a copper plate etching. Over four weeks you will learn how to make a series of proofs to develop your own botanical themed artwork using hardground and aquatint. In August, we welcome not one, but two international, world-class guitar virtuosos to our stage: Albert Lee and Kaki King. Grammy award-winning country-rock artist Albert Lee is best known for his fiery fast fingers and his inimitable playing style. New York-based Kaki King will present her extraordinary solo show The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body, in which cutting-edge technology is used to project stunning imagery directly onto the guitar as she plays to create a provocative and beautiful immersive experience. We are delighted to introduce a special Blue Mountains Theatre presentation: two unforgettable evenings of iconic
1960s music hosted by Australia’s own legendary music guru, Glenn A. Baker.
