FROM THE DIRECTOR Spring to Summer at the Cultural Centre brings a raft of new exhibitions and programs for all ages and interests. We see the final weeks of our hugely successful Blue Mountains Botanica exhibition (closing 14 Oct) that will make way for the National touring exhibition Contemporary Gallipoli, honouring the ANZAC Gallipoli campaign through contemporary art. Opening on the 30th of November will be our major Blue Mountains Cultural Centre curated exhibition for the year, Peter Rushforth: A Legacy. This exhibition will bring together artworks by some of Australia’s best ceramicists who have been influenced by renowned Blue Mountains artist Peter Rushforth, celebrating his life and honouring his memory as a pioneer of Australian pottery.

As the nights warm up we have the opportunity to launch our inaugural big screen outdoor cinema in the Cultural Centre’s central courtyard. From November to January we will be presenting contemporary classics such as Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet and Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element, so keep an eye out for times and tickets and come along with a chair or blanket for a relaxing night under the stars (please note age restrictions may apply). See you soon at the Cultural Centre Paul Brinkman Director, Blue Mountains Cultural Centre

WE ARE ON TOUR! Our popular 2016 printmaking exhibition As far as the eye can see commenced a two-year tour of regional galleries across Australia in July this year. Through the work of twenty-two Australian artists this exhibition celebrates the contemporary topography of both landscape and printmaking. The artists express their individual relationships to the land through a variety of print media, describing both the vast scale and the intimate detail of our diverse natural environment and portraying Australia’s unique and varied geography. The exhibition showcases the artistic vibrancy of the Blue Mountains to national audiences through the work of 7 local artists – Locust Jones, Judith Martinez, Janet Parker-Smith, Julie Paterson, Gary Shinfield, Chris Tobin and Freedom Wilson – whose work is shown alongside artists from every state and territory.

MYCORRHIZAL FUTURAE - FEROX – INFERIUS 25 AUGUST – 7 OCTOBER Mycorrhizal: Futurae - Ferox – Inferius is Freedom Wilson’s new body of work which raises awareness of the endangered Buttercup Doubletail Orchid (Diuris aequalis). Orchids have evolved highly complex ecological partnerships over millennia. Beneath the soil each plant species depends on a specific species of Mycorrhizal fungus for its existence. Little is known about the optimal environmental conditions that support these fungi, but many can only grow in healthy ecosystems. BLUE MOUNTAINS BOTANICA 25 AUGUST – 14 OCTOBER For more than two centuries the unique vegetation of the Blue Mountains region has provided a rich treasure trove for some of Australia’s most notable botanists and botanical illustrators. By naming and documenting a myriad of plant species they paved the way for today’s conservation and research efforts. Developed in partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust, Blue Mountains Botanica delves into the history of botanical exploration of the Blue Mountains and features historical botanical illustrations, plant specimen and archival material drawn from the National Herbarium of NSW, the

Daniel Solander Library and the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah. The exhibition also features a selection of works by contemporary Sydney and Blue Mountains artists who incorporate botanical elements in their works through a range of media such as drawing, photography and installations. Exhibiting artists are James Blackwell, Ona Janzen, Jennifer Leahy & Edith Pass, Angela Lober, Julie Nettleton, Edith Rewa and Jacqueline Spedding. LOUISE KERR FAITHFUL AND WILD 1 DECEMBER – 13 JANUARY This exhibition explores the importance of dogs, both in our own domestic lives and in the wider environment. Wild dogs have roamed the Blue Mountains for thousands of years. In the national park that surrounds our homes, the Dingo (or Warrigal) live and are occasionally sighted. The Wild Dog Mountains area to the west of Katoomba has a range of geographical features named after dogs, including Mount Warrigal, Mount Yellow Dog and Dingo Creek, to name a few. We have a complex relationship with our precious friends. They are our companions, protectors and workmates. Ever faithful, they never give up on us. Kerr’s work investigates how deeply it is embedded in her own and the lives of others and the place we live. A Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Exposé Program exhibition

Behind the work of the potter is a search for truth and beauty, through form, glaze and function, and in rare cases, the work of the individual potter may express spiritual value. When successful, such human qualities can bring warmth to the coldness of our high tech environment. Peter Rushforth quoted in the S. H. Ervin e-catalogue Peter Rushforth: All Fired Up (2013)

20 • Blue Mountains Cultural City Art Gallery

PETER RUSHFORTH: A LEGACY Peter Rushforth’s passion for ceramics is reflected in a deep understanding of his materials and environment. He was an inspiring artist who aimed to “create forms that have life and vitality, colours and textures that are unique to earth materials”. Rushforth wasn’t interested in imposing irrelevant decoration onto his forms, instead he wanted to integrate the form with the colours and glazes so they sat in harmony. Drawn to Eastern aesthetics he was influenced by Japanese techniques that date back for centuries and subsequently fostered these traditions in an Australian context. The exhibition Peter Rushforth: A Legacy is a celebration of the artist’s career, spanning more than six decades, and the significant influence he had on generations of artists, many of whom currently reside in or near to the Greater Blue Mountains.

Artists included in the exhibition are: Mollie Douglas, Marea Gazzard, Clara Hali, Jan Irvine-Nealie, Col Levy, Janet Mansfield, Ivan McMeekin, Susie McMeekin, Chester Nealie, Simon Reece, Bill Samuels, Shiga Shigeo, Thanakupi, Maureen Williams-Levy and Peter Wilson among others. KAREN MIRANDA ABEL Veil of Time 2018, glass, earth samples contributed by participants of the GEODIVERSITY project. Purchased through the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Collection Acquisition Fund 2018. Photo: Silversalt. 22 • Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Blue Mountains City Art Gallery

The Collection NEW ACQUISITION FOR THE BLUE MOUNTAINS CULTURAL CENTRE COLLECTION: KAREN MIRANDA ABEL’S VEIL OF TIME Through the Collection Acquisition Fund, Blue Mountains Cultural Centre was able to purchase World Heritage Artist Karen Miranda Abel’s installation Veil of Time (2018). Abel spent 6 weeks in the Greater Blue Mountains as artist in residence researching and developing her body of work Liminal Refugia which was on exhibition at Blue Mountains City Art gallery from 24 March – 6 May 2018. Veil of Time is a constellation of earth samples gathered by over 65 individuals in the Greater Blue Mountains. Unravelling like a

geologic time scale, a graduated array of minerals preserved in hourglasses symbolise the delicate formation of sandstone caves in which rainwater etches the quartz sandstone grains from the absorbent stone body, slowly releasing a shoreless beachscape onto the cave floor below. From December 2017 to February 2018, residents and visitors from the Greater Blue Mountains area were invited to be part of a participatory art project about the geodiversity of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area by filling a dry specimen envelope with a small sample of natural earth. To respect the fragility and intrinsic ecological and cultural values of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, participants were asked to not gather samples from Aboriginal places or sacred sites, conservation reserves, flora reserves, national parks, state conservation areas, state forests or other nature reserve areas.

The Earth’s mantle of soil – called the pedosphere – is the thin soil fabric that blankets the ground, consisting of natural bodies of mineral and organic compositions, which in the Blue Mountains primarily consist of layers of sandstone, basalt and shale. The term ‘geodiversity’ refers to all non-biological elements that shape the Earth: the soils, stones, fossils, geological formations and landscape-forming processes that are the foundation for all living things, including human life on the grand geologic time scale. Geodiversity is intimately linked with biodiversity and is similarly affected by change. In the Blue Mountains, geodiversity features include magnificent erosional elements such as caves, rock shelters, cliffs, slot canyons, bottleneck valleys and sandstone pagodas. These ancient forms possess intrinsic value even if they are not the habitat of significant ecosystems. . InSight Membership Magazine issue 18 • 23

FROM THE HUB As we head towards the end of 2018, Blue Mountains Theatre proudly continues to present a stellar program of exceptional live performances. In October, we are thrilled to welcome the internationally acclaimed Evergreen Ensemble to launch their exquisite new album of baroque and folk music inspired by the windswept landscapes of Scotland and Scandinavia, titled Snow In Summer. Families can look forward to the wonderful Monkey Baa Theatre Company production of Joesephine Wants To Dance, a delightful and funny stage adaptation of Jackie French and Bruce Whatley’s hugely popular children’s book. Comedy is perennially popular with our audiences, and we are happy to oblige! Coming our way in November is Lawrence Mooney with his hilarious

show An Evening with Malcolm, and following a sell-out show in 2017 the kooky Kransky Sisters return with their unique take on the festive season: A Very Kransky Christmas. Contemporary Australian popular music is another highlight of our program this November. Iconic piano-rockers The Whitlams are stopping by for one show only on their national 25th anniversary tour, and one of this country’s most respected singer/songwriters Lior and his talented trio will delight the audience with an intimate concert of songs drawn from Lior’s brand new album Between You and Me. And remember a Gift Voucher to attend any performance at the Blue Mountains Theatre makes the perfect present for Christmas! Tim Smith Facility Manager Blue Mountains Theatre
