PETA HINTON Under the Weather 29 October – 22 November
The artwork featured in this exhibition began with a focus on water in the Blue Mountains landscape and the unique environments it shapes. But then the water disappeared, the green in the landscape turned brown and leaves fell from the trees.
The drama of the 2019-20 summer and the disasters that followed, has surpassed our experiences of a changing climate. It has left a level trauma and anxiety about the weather that was not there before. The title Under the Weather refers to the ills of the environment and how in turn this effects people.
The paintings on scrolls explore processes of damage, destruction, recovery and survival. Dramatic in style, they use symbolism to tell stories, recalling moments and observations. Scrolls have been used throughout history to convey seasonal themes, these works reflect on our changing weather and seasons in a contemporary interpretation of such traditions.
