BUSKER WATCH

Lachlan (Blue Mtns Pied Piper)

"Busking is an essential social skill for any musician, it’s practice, it’s performance, you’re able to get personal feedback all rolled into one, you get to know your locals, the locals get to know you and it’s this relationship between the busker and the locals that has helped me bring out my New album: 4 Elements on the 1/1/18. I have already begun playing certain songs from the album at venues like the Blackheath Rhodo fest, Springwood Etsy markets, Leura Garden Festival and any other markets that allow music." Check out my Facebook Page Blue Mountains Piper and if there’s a venue where you want my music, shoot me a message or email me on Piedpiper199785@gmail.com

Team Haze have secretly become regulars at Katoomba's retro diner that is authentically oldskool Australiana. Once an underground Pancake house, the space has been transformed with kitschly care into a bygone Oz era. Arcade machines, imagery, buddy booths and a menu that includes the rare tropical Spam sandwich make the atmosphere utterly instagrammable. There's a strong focus on cold drinks and cocktails, as well as a quick coffee amongst the Johnson of Australia collection... interview next issue @whoisauntyjack

“Hairdressing was never on the cards in my mental plan of life,” recounts the owner of Katoomba’s trendiest barbershop, Max Steel. “It only occurred as a direct result of playing in bands for a few years. I started taking care of the band members’ hair... it was rough... real rough.. a pretty punk DIY attitude... some of the chops were good – some were god-awful!” After the band dissolved in late 2011, Max began cutting other friends’ hair out of his house. In 2012 he began his apprenticeship and scored a spot at Euphoria in Leura under the guidance of Kellie Adler. “Hairdressing is a pretty intense industry. I was lucky that Kel and the rest of the team had a really strong work ethic and all had a huge creative streak that inspired me to really test myself.” “Euphoria was – and still is – a brilliant business. Always busy, always booked, and that comes down to every person showing they cared about their craft and even more about their clients. And I’ve carried that on into my new business Lord Carrington’s Parlour; comfortability, communication and technical knowhow all combined makes a smooth running machine.” Opening the business was something I’d never thought I’d do this soon in my career. Only 5 years into this industry... it’s a pretty intimidating thing. “I’m just about to become a dad too. Ezra, my partner, and I have been thinking about it for a while, so for a little family to be kicking off soon, we’re pretty excited! The little gremlin is due on the one year anniversary of the Parlour opening,” he laughs. “The universe has a pretty good sense of humour haha!” Max is at Lord Carrington’s Parlour, located inside the Carrington Hotel Katoomba.
