The Year of the Horse July 4 – 19, 2014
Year of the Horse According to the Chinese Zodiac calendar, this year is the Year of the Wooden Horse, which is characterized as a time of great strength, growth, and idealism. It is also a fortuitous year in that it brings good fortune and encourages unexpected journeys, surprising romances, and following impulses. These are all traits that Blue Rain Gallery finds especially prodigious for launching an equine-themed show, pairing two equally strong and vibrant artistic voices: Shelley Muzylowski Allen and Rimi Yang. As the characteristics of the Year of the Wooden Horse dictates, we encourage you to follow your impulses, take an unexpected journey to Santa Fe this July, and fall in love with the artwork of Allen and Yang.

Shelley Muzylowski Allen Horses Born of Fire The forces of fire and wind are harnessed by artist, Shelley Muzylowski Allen, as she blows and sculpts glass into majestic and elegant forms of animals. In particular, Allen’s gravity-defying, leaping horses are a work of genius as their bodies have strong and clear conformation yet their movement is light and nimble with their hooves barely grazing the ground. These are sentient beings that prance, gallop, and buck with a grace and beauty unique unto themselves. The striated stone bases that anchor each sculpture act as the only reminder that these whirlwind animals are actually earth-bound and not cantering among the clouds and challenging gale-force tempests in a test of speed and unbridled power.

Rimi Yang Horses Born of Emotion Expressionist painter, Rimi Yang, imbues her lively compositions with red, blue, and yellow primary colors that evoke prime emotions. Her paintings that portray horses impart sensory experiences that project an almost dreamlike, trance filled, vibrant color and rhythmic melody. These pictures especially evidence a sacred, if not sometimes secret, bond that exists between a horse and their rider. There is an obvious trust that lies between her human and equine subjects — riders sit up tall and confident behind the withers of their steeds, while, in turn, the horses’ gently curving necks bow in acceptance and their heels lift in prideful gait. The key is that Yang’s horses do not sacrifice their freedom in being tamed but, on the contrary, these barrel-chested and powerful creatures revel in harmony with the young, delicate women astride them.
