fromthepigs We heard you lard and clear. The crossword puzzles are back! We will spare rib you the details and excuses but the fun pages temporarily went away because of a nasty thing called a Canadian paper tariff, not to be confused with the great thing called Canadian bacon in Eggs Benedict. The testy tariff forced many publishers to reshuffle the deck, so to speak. It took an act of Congress and some good old fashioned pork barrel politicking, but we’ve found a way to bring back the puzzles. We, the pastured pigs of Maple Brook Farm, are sponsoring those pages. We assign some of that blame to gazillionaire and part time media mogul Warren Buffet, who has been gobbling up newspapers and print shops. Needless to say, the Oracle of Omaha’s appetite is minuscule compared to that of the Hogs of Roseland. Did someone say Buffet? Let us tell ya, we miss our nuts. Now, get your mind out of the dirty water trough. Part of our pre-retirement plan is to gorge on local chestnuts which we are proudly doing in this picture. Our young chestnut orchard isn’t producing these yet but we hope to be gobbling them up in a

few years. Plus, we’ve got more trees on the way this spring. Let’s talk about skunks for a minute. Right around feeding time, this black and white thing appeared in our paddock. We ignored it for a while until it started acting all big and mighty. Well, the farmer took care of it and unlike the crosswords, that skunk won’t be back. How can you be so sure that we’re not bacon it up? These Boston butts don’t lie. Happy April Fools! Pig 1 and Pig 2 APRIL 2019

Blue Ridge LIFE

APRIL 2019

Hop harvest is an annual event at area breweries like Blue Mountain Barrel House where volunteers often spend a day picking and sorting before enjoying a well-deserved meal. Several hop growers have hit the scene in recent years such as Randy Green’s The Green Diamond Hop Yard in Shipman, which provides fresh hops to area breweries.

THE

HOP HUSTLE Local hops growers eager to craft a viable crop.

For Randy Green, lighting his hop yard on fire is a ritual each spring. Farmers do this to prepare the field for the next season’s crops, and on this acre of land, that means rows of mostly Cascade with a test row of Nugget. If you like the taste of hoppy IPAs brewed with local hops, you can thank Randy and other hops farmers like him. “Me and my son-in-law were sitting there on the back porch — we didn’t even have our house [built] yet — and he said, ‘What about hops?’” And to think this field could have been planted in pumpkins or pines, two of the crops Randy had considered when his wife bought this 15-acre parcel in Shipman back in 2005. The Greens knew they wanted to do something agricultural with the property — after all, Randy’s “always had dirt under [his] finger nails,” growing up in the rural town of Odessa, Delaware. In 2006, the Greens began pouring footers for their home and roughly around that time, Blue Mountain Brewery was getting set to open in Afton. Randy had already spent a few years researching hop growing in the Mid-Atlantic and quickly found out the bulk of the research was in the northern, drier states, with the epicenter being in the Pacific Northwest.

But Mid-Atlantic craft brewing was about to have its moment and Randy learned about a hop harvest Blue Mountain was offering to ther public. “I went up there a couple of days before and I met Stan Driver. I said, ‘Stan, I’m interested in growing hops.’ He said, ‘Hop on here and help me do this stuff.’” Hop on here. He actually did say that and it was that experience harvesting the crop that probably sealed the deal for Randy. Those early hop growing days in Nelson County led to the loose formation of a group of fellow farmers who were trying to figure ways they could make a living growing hops for local breweries. As the number of breweries in the area exploded, that loose group formalized into the Old Dominion Hops Cooperative, a for-profit agribusiness whose mission is to promote the cultivation and sale of hops in the MidAtlantic United States. Randy chairs the group and says though members are mostly clustered in the Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and Richmond areas, membership has branched out to Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and down south to North Carolina and Tennessee. Even Georgia — it can’t all be peaches, you now — has a few members. “One of our biggest challenges we have here in our Southern location is our summer days are shorter. They’re only about 14.5 hours long,” Randy explains. “Hops really need a lot of long day length in order to grow tall.” Hops will grow 40 ft high under the right conditions. In comparison, Randy’s posts are 12 ft tall. The ones at the Barrel House are 16 ft tall. With the help of research teams from Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, and North Carolina State, Randy is hoping scientists hone in on a hop variety that thrives on the Mid-Atlantic climate. And a necessary prong of making hops a viable crop for Virginia farmers to grow is assuring producers that they can efficiently process for sale. Just like apple growers need a packing shed, hops growers need a processing facility. continued on page 14

“Dry them down, pelletize them, bag them, put them in nitrogen-charged bags so that they’re much more stable.” Because right now, the small scale hop-picking scene is centered around marketing them as fresh or wet. “Literally I harvest those hops on a Saturday morning and by 4 o’clock Saturday afternoon they’re at the Barrel House in Taylor Smack’s hands, and he’s going to use them right away, keep them in his coolers for a day or two before he brews them, or he’s going to dry them down and mix them with the hops that he’s growing because he’s growing the same variety.” “As a brewery that strives to remind people of the agricultural ties between beer and its ingredients, using local hops — primarily our own, but also from three local hops growers — is one more thing we do to make some of our beers have a flavor of the land,” Taylor Smack owner of Blue Mountain Brewery explains. “Hops grown here are going to have their subtle differences from hops grown elsewhere, and it’s one more thing we can do to be unique.” And for Randy, being able to grow hops is another way he and his family can come together. It would take about a week for he and his wife to plant this year’s plot. He instead holds a hops string party in the spring, and with help from family and friends, he can knock it out in a day. By mid-August, Stan shows up with a harvester and the gang reconvenes for a picking party. “It’s something that brings our family together 3-4 big occasions a year, other than the holidays. These are things we can do together.” Even Randy’s grandson is getting his hands dirty and he’s only 3. “He helped us harvest, he helped us put up some strings.” Which is how the Greens have chosen to put down roots in Nelson County, by sowing their field with hops and hope. BRL

Many area hops growers belong to the Old Dominion Hop Cooperative, a for-profit group aiming to study and advance the Virginia-grown hops scene. Founding member Stan Driver will be at Devils Backbone Brewing Company’s Home Brewer’s Weekend Saturday, March 31 discussing growing hops for home brewing. To stay in the loop, visit the Co-op’s page on Facebook or online at OldDominionHops.com.

How much is too much screen time? Just a few years ago we discussed screen time in very concrete terms. But now screens are everywhere and used for everything! I saw one prediction that eventually pretty much every flat surface we see will eventually wear a screen. So, what are the health risks of screen time? There is research to suggest that in children obesity, irregular sleep schedules, behavioral problems, loss of social skills, increased violence, and less play time all result from excessive screen time. But it is not only kids that are affected. It is proposed that adults may have changes happen in their brains, increased risk for obesity and diabetes, increased eye strain, decreased ability to process emotions, and even earlier death all resulting from lots of time on screens. Some of these problems stem from more time sitting, which we know is bad for us. Some are from an increasing interaction with others only through digital media at the expense of real time with other people. And some of these risks are from looking at the screens themselves.

Our world is going to have screens and digital interactions more and more. So, here are some basic guidelines to try to live with them in a healthy way: Kids under 2 should avoid screen time except for video chatting. Kids aged 2-5 should only have 1 hour per day max, and that should be high quality screen time with a parent. After age 6 the numbers aren’t as easy to nail down. Kids can have screen time, but need to be sure to be getting at least an hour of activity per day in addition. They also should not see screens an hour before bed. Finding that balance is the job of thinking parents. And those same guidelines are good ones for adults to abide by as well. Did you get an hour of activity in today? Talk with some friends in person? If so, enjoy the show! (But not right before bed.) If not, better go for a walk with a buddy instead! Dr. Steve Schmitz is a licensed medical doctor based in Afton. Firefly Lightning fast internet is now landing in Nelson County!

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Rural no more … at least not when it comes to connecting with the world. If you have always wanted in on the Nelson County way of life, now may be a better time than ever to make the move. If you need to work from home or stream the latest Netflix hits, you can do it from the comfort of your home as fiber optic internet rolls out to county residents. What has attracted many people to Nelson County has been the very reason why high speed internet has been slow to spread. Our mountains and valleys offer beauty and seclusion but when it comes to broadband deployment, that beauty translates to rugged terrain. Couple that with our county’s relatively low population density, and property owners have been left with few options. The teams of white trucks you may have seen stringing cable lately are part of the Firefly installation. Who exactly is Firefly? According to its web site, fireflyva.com, Firefly Fiber Broadband

is a subsidiary of Central Virginia Electric Coop. Firefly Broadband uses fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) to offer affordable and reliable broadband and Voice-Over-IP (VOIP) services. Just as CVEC brought thousands of rural Virginians electricity for the first time in 1937, Firefly is installing high speed fiber internet. Firefly internet is homegrown right here in Central Virginia, with virtually all technical and support staff based in Virginia. Firefly says it is “very proud to carry on in the tradition of CVEC, by providing internet and voice service offerings that are fair, honest, and reliable.” What is the Firefly Difference? Firefly says it will be offering no service contracts or usage caps. Unlike cable, DSL, satellite, cellular, and fixed wireless connections, fiber internet has lightning fast download and upload speeds. This symmetrical service means that you

Marlo Allen

can upload and download at the same speed, which enables amazing new capabilities, and gives you the ability to do more at home. When & Where? Construction of the mainline fiber-optic network in Nelson County began in November 2018. Pre-registration also began in November 2018 and remains open. Connections are expected to begin in late spring of 2019. Nelson is served by five substations. Only members who receive power from the Martins Store substations will be included in the build at this time. To connect the home must be eligible for CVEC electric service and be in one of these areas: Nellysford, Woods Mill, Covesville, Afton, Faber, Lovingston, Roseland, Schuyler, Shipman, and Stoney Creek. CVEC members in other parts of the county will be connected in the next five years.

Insist on that girl!

CVEC claims every member will eventually be able to sign up for Firefly Fiber Broadband service. However, houses in some areas may take up to five years to reach. Until then, property owners in those areas will need to rely on existing technologies, or “fast enough” speeds depending on their data demands. But at last, it looks like we are slowly turning the much-awaited broadband corner. And lets face it: Lightning fast internet is just one more reason why life doesn’t get any better in Nelson County! Please note that there are other great service providers for fiber internet in Nelson, so explore the option that is best for you. Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson County and helped found Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery of Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

“We go to these places once a month, sometimes twice a month. And that’s not enough. People want it. People need it,” says Shawn Woodward, the redbearded guy preaching the cider donut gospel inside the teal food trailer that’s amassed a cult following. Linda Turner, is another member of the cult. “They are delicious,” she assures me as she clutches a box for her work family. Sporting the trademark scrubs nurses wear, Linda will drive to the other side of the highway to her job at Blue Ridge Medical Center. “I started coming when they started coming here and I love it. I take them to my co-workers just to let them know that I appreciate them.” Just what the doctor ordered. And to think this hot cider donut business began as shaved ice in Buena Vista. “Originally the shaved ice business was called the Shaved Ice Shop,” Shawn explains. The business was started by a guy who goes by the name of F.W., and another business partner. “The logo was Mama with a mustache. No glasses. It was called Shady Crockett.” But shaved ice isn’t terribly popular during the colder months, when Mike Bell is trying to thaw out frozen portajohns. F.W. and his business partner had an idea. “They decided on donuts and never looked back.” And neither did Shawn who found himself ditching his day job in New Jersey to sling donuts out of a teal trailer down south. He had been managing a day program facility for adults with developmental disabilities. “So yeah, a big change in my lifestyle,” he admits. His fiancée, Mallory, was managing a restaurant at the time. “It was just time for a change.” Change can happen quickly and for Shawn and Mallory, it happened in a matter of weeks. Mallory’s brother, Blake, who runs Speakertree Records in Lynchburg, used to work for F.W. and she had been interviewed to manage the new brick and mortar Mama Crockett’s store at 5th and Clay. After that interview, Shawn, still in New Jersey, heard from Mallory. “Immediately, I need you down here,” she told him. Two weeks later the couple was in Lynchburg and had settled into an apartment. “The rest is history,” Shawn says, setting a bowl of batter under the highpitched whir of a mixer. Another customer approaches the window and this time it’s for a half dozen. Just a few seconds before, a machine dropped a clump of batter into a vat of hot oil where it travels along a channel, earning its characteristic copper color, before being dowsed with sugar. “I nearly broke my neck when I saw your truck,” Russ Blankenstein said as he forked over the money. continued on page 24

“I used to work for the City of Lynchburg and they would be downtown so I’d always stop in and get a couple, get half a bag and take it back to the office and have donuts and coffee. Now I work in Charlottesville so driving by, seeing the green trailer, really surprised me so I just did a U-turn and got a half dozen. My folks in Charlottesville I don’t think have ever had Mama Crockett’s so they’re going to get them today.” Russ is a good man because Charlottesville is 42 minutes away from Colleen. Doing the math, his rate of personal donut consumption could be 7 minutes per donut. Back inside the trailer, Shawn is dialing back the oil temperature — you don’t want those beauties getting too dark. Framing the inside of the service window are three important rules written in Sharpie that rival Noah’s ten. Rule 1: Sling ‘em. Rule 2: Be cool. Rule 3: Always trade for tacos. “I don’t ever want to sit behind a desk. This job is perfect. You get constant — I guess you could say gratification — people are happy. It’s donuts. People love donuts.” So who exactly is Mama Crockett? Shawn hears that question all the time. “What’s the backstory on her?” I ask. He replies with a long pause, which at first concerns me. But then the man with the red beard waxes philosophical and channels some Yoda. “Mama is everywhere.” We chuckle. “Any time someone asks ‘Where’s Mama?’ you gotta just look around and say, ‘Mama is everywhere.’” Today she is in Colleen, Virginia, U.S.A., Planet Earth. But donuts don’t last long, today is never guaranteed, so if you’re lucky to find Mama, enjoy her. “Mama’s always going to be moving.” BRL

As you turn into Ted Hughes’ driveway, rusty farm relics lead the way to his workshop with the name of his business, painted in big, bold, red letters: BUGGY WORKS. “I’ve had too many birthdays,” he tells me as he greets me inside, settling into one of many chairs scattered around the shop. You can gauge the lifespan of a tree by its rings. As for Ted, the angle of his posture clues you into his age. “83 in September,” he proudly announces but with the sobering realization a marathon runner may have as he begins to see the finish line. 26 miles is a long distance to run. Eight decades is a long time to live. Even so, one foot right after the other is how Ted runs his race. continued on page 29

continued from page 27

“Well I’ve been working all my life. I started working since I was 10, 12 years old,” he tells me. He begins his mornings at around 5 A.M. to feed the animals and stoke the fire. “Well that’s why you haven’t croaked yet,” I tell him. “It’s why you’re not dead yet. You do stuff.” Ted isn’t a coffee-in-the-morning man but he does have a thing for diet drinks. For breakfast, he has cheese toast and a banana. Six years ago doctors diagnosed him with spinal stenosis and told him he shouldn’t be walking. Instead, like the projects around him, Ted chugs along. “I’d hate to see this old stuff go to the junk yard. I can build a new piece, but it’s not like restoring. Just like the caboose. You can build a new caboose but we put that back for nothing!” Which is part of the fun: Finding a fixer-upper, assessing what it needs, and then bringing it back to life. Ted did that with the old caboose he restored for the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail in Piney River. Before that, he restored an old surrey he scored from an antique shop in Buena Vista. But I am here today to check out a cider press project someone told me about. He abandons his chair to briefly show me the pieces of the structure he’s replaced: the legs, the feeder box. A few days later, he tells me to come back to the shop because the project is finished and the owner is about to take it home. “It didn’t take me long to decide who I wanted to work on it,” says Dick Whitehead of Roseland. “Ted said he’d be willing to take on the challenge so now we have a totally restocked press.” Dick’s family gathers yearly to make apple butter and his middle daughter, Susan, has long had an interest in apples. And as the region experiences an apple cider revival, a cider press seemed like a good thing to bring to these gatherings. She located an old one in Farmville. “This box needed replacing and the drain rack needed some work,” Dick explains. “We brought it home. It worked. We used it two or three years. It wasn’t in the best condition but the mechanical side of it worked great.” Dick began to notice that the heavy iron screw press put a lot pressure on the wooden parts. Not only that, but a closer inspection revealed the wood had been damaged by powder post beetles. “We realized, ‘You know this grinds apples pretty well, it functions real well, maybe it will be worth restocking.’” Ted to the rescue. Using his own stash of oak, he replaced the damaged wood, re-greased the gears, upgraded some of the bolts, and replaced the grinder hand crank. The result is a virtual time machine that roars back to life with an ancient rumble that takes you back to the days families gathered together by horse and by buggy to squeeze the fruits of their labor. As the sign over his shop implies, the buggy works and so does the cider press. BRL

Pork!

We are a small family farm that sources its chestnut tree stock from nearby growers. Our orchard will soon mature and begin producing tasty Nelson County chestnuts like the ones our pigs feast on. A new batch of pastured pork is coming soon. Price sheet available now at Tuckahoe Antiques in Nellysford.
