A visionary project! When Parkway construction began in late

1935 it was to create jobs during times of economic struggle.

Today, it continues to be a stalwart of regional tourist economies

with nearly 20 million visitors a year who spend more than 2.3 billion

dollars. The 75th Anniversary celebrations are expected to bring an

additional 5-8 million visitors to the region and more importantly

provide a platform to encourage future stewardship for

this incredibly scenic and biologically important park.

This beautiful serigraph commemorates the 75th Anniversay of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Only 600 of these WPA style numbered and signed special edition prints will be sold. Visit BlueRidgeParkwayStore. com the “official” store for 75th Anniversary items, to reserve yours today. Dimensions are

developing guidelines for adjacent land development standards; and supporting 75th Anniversary activities. The budget woes of the Parkway continue. More than 71 permanent jobs on the Parkway have been lost due to a lack of funding; and, the Parkway has lost 37% of its maintenance staff who care for its 100 sewer systems, the numerous historic buildings, and the 525 miles of roads. Although the stimulus package promises to bring some relief to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and potentially address some of the backlogged needs, it will fill only a handful of the 71 permanent jobs. If you are asked, “What is the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation?” Here might be your answer ... The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation provides private support for vital enhancement projects that would otherwise go unfunded. The Foundation focuses closely on the enrichment of children and the assurance that the traditions, beauty, vision, and promise of the Blue Ridge Parkway are fully realized. Whether by constructing improved visitor facilities or by creating hands-on learning programs that encourage preservation of this unique national park, the Foundation works independently of federal budgets to see that everyone who travels here, for generations to come, can share the journey.

75th Anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway previews in 2009 -- full attack in 2010

Willa Mays, the Foundation’s former director of development, continues as a champion for Earth

The Foundation is eager to help focus the nation on our milepost celebration and will work alongside the National Park Service and our partner organizations to do so. We will continue funding needed projects like the Bass Lake restrooms at Moses Cone Memorial Park, the Graveyard Fields enhancements to improve the visitor experiences, the Linville Falls education shelter/pavilion, and the refurbishing of the Rough Ridge Trail to make sure we are ready for a grand celebration in 2010. In addition, we will work with communities to encourage voluntary adoption of adjacent lands development guidelines and deeper understanding of the importance of Parkway integrity to the continued prosperity of our Parkway communi-

Parkway superintendent Phil Francis; members of the Discovery Place staff of Charlotte, NC; staff members of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation; and executive director Houck Medford salute Willa Mays for her unselfish devotion, contribution, and service to the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Blue Ridge Discovery Weekend. The presentation was made on May 1 at the Wildacres Retreat Center in Little Switzerland..

How many people do you know have traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway from one end to the other? Probably, many. And they all tell you with a tone of emphasis and satisfaction. “I did it!”. “We have always known that this was a special population of the Blue Ridge Parkway constituency and they deserve recognition,” states Mari Jo Turner, the Foundation’s director of development. “To that end (no pun intended), we have created a special recognition certificate that we will send to you with your name beautifully inscribed. And yes, it is suitable for framing. All that is required is your full name, your mode of travel, and the decade of your accomplishment. The actual year would be preferable.

Share the Journey(R), is a registered trademark which builds relationships for the Blue Ridge Parkway. It could mean this to you ... This is no ordinary road. With grand mountains on either side, vibrant communities along the way, and stunning landscapes from beginning to end, this is a journey unlike any in the world. No matter where you decide to merge into the experience, or at what milepost you choose to leave it, there is timeless magic in every mile. For generations people have come to the Parkway to be inspired, soothed, awed and enlightened. Those who journeyed here as children years ago return now with children and grandchildren. For them the promise of the Parkway thrives not only in a quiet escape to natural splendor, but also in the joy of sharing a profound and unforgettable moment. The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation understands the power of such collective experience, and we champion this extraordinary environment that connects the spirits of countless people and nature’s glory through a twisting ribbon of mountain road. From one person to another, one generation to another, the journey of the Parkway is a journey of life. Here is where history reaches out to the future, where memories and dreams travel boldly together. For this reason the Foundation works faithfully to help preserve the Parkway— A gift to us from the past that we now hold gently in our hands, a meaningful journey that we take, weave into our life stories, and then pass on.

Foundation Will Host Ken Burns Documentary Series on National Parks this Fall on UNC-TV The new Ken Burns documentary series, THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA’S BEST IDEA, will air this fall on the PBS channel, UNC-TV. The 12-hour, six-part documentary series, directed by Burns and co-produced with his longtime colleague, Dayton Duncan, who also wrote the script, is the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. As such, it follows in the tradition of Burns’s exploration of other American inventions, such as baseball and jazz. Filmed over the course of more than six years in some of nature’s most spectacular locales — from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska — the documentary is nonetheless a story of people

themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy. It is a story of struggle and conflict, high ideals and crass opportunism, stirring adventure and enduring inspiration — set against breathtaking backdrops. Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature’s most spectacular locales, THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA’S BEST IDEA is a sixpart, 12-hour film by Ken Burns on the history of America’s national parks and the people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved. Over six years in the making, THE NATIONAL PARKS is a visual feast, featuring some of the most extensive, breathtaking images of the national parks system every captured on film. fund raising organization for the Blue Ridge Parkway. Its authority to request and receive funds on behalf of the Parkway is vested in a cooperative of agreement with the National Park Service and Department of Interior. Projects and programs are generated by two mechanisms. The National Park Service in its annual budget review identifies projects or programs which cannot be funded from congressional appropriations but are important for sustaining the park mission. Some are selected that meet the Foundation’s three funding criteria: the project/program must enhance the quality of life for the Parkway visitor; or it must have lasting value; or it should support the Foundation mission of “providing a margin of excellence.” In today’s economy, granted, they might be a moving target. The Park Service in their annual work plan for the Foundation identifies the program areas where it needs the greatest assistance from the Foundation. the National Park Service. The Foundation does not fund transportation, meals, lodging, or permanent positions. The trend is that the Foundation will fund projects which have a very

high potential for leveraging additional relationships and sources of funding which might not be received by direct donation. Examples of this are the construction of the Bass Lake Convenience Station and improvements at Graveyard Fields. In addition to the policy and administration responsibilities of our Board of Trustees, our Council of Advisors provides expertise in special areas and is a breeding ground for future board leadership. The Council also serves as the reservoir for established relationships with academic institutions. The Foundation currently has fourteen endowment funds, collectively known as the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation Trust. These endowment funds are placed with local community foundations along the Parkway corridor that professionally manage our funds and award dividends annually or they are placed in authority managed accounts which are invested according to policies established by the board of trustees These monies are used to support operations, fund Parkway projects and programs, or are reinvested as principle. The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation freely and accurately shares information about its governance, finances, and operations. It is open and inclusive in its procedures, processes and programs consistent with its mission and purposes. Questions concerning the Foundation should be directed to the executive director, Dr. Houck Medford; 717 S. Marhsall Street, Suite 105-B, Winston-Salem, NC; 336.721.0260.

Volunteers Hobie Cawood, Dan Donahue and Anne Barnes with staff Willa Mays and Lynne Fletcher to showcase Journey Wines of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation at Blue Ridge Wine Festival in Blowing Rock April 18, 2009. Also volunteering were KB Medford and Norris Barnes. Thanks!

Bass Lake Update The National Park Service and the Town of Blowing Rock have reached an agreement where the Town will provide the engineering and installation and the park will provide the materials. Seasonal employees have retruned in May, so finish work has begun on the bathroom interiors. Rock work is scheduled to finish the exterior porch and retaining walls. Craftsmen from the Parkway’s Historic Preservation Workshop will complete this detail. Electrical service will be installed at the same time as the other utility ditches are dug. A fun celebration will mark its opening. Stay tuned! Photo credit: Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation

Healthy Kids Healthy Parks Continues to Evolve: New Name “Kids in Parks”

Peter and Judith Nevins James and Diana Oblinger Brian J and Martha O’Connell Larry P and Pamela Olsen Byron and Marion O’Quinn

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is dedicated to working with the National Park Service to protect and preserve the Blue Ridge Parkway through building and supporting community connections to the people and the places that make the Blue Ridge Parkway a special and important natural and cultural resource. One key aspect of building that connection is through the next generation of stewards…the children. Working in cooperation with partners throughout the community, we want to reach, connect and foster a life-long relationship between kids and nature. It is through a meaningful personal connection with natural and cultural resources that lasting positive impacts can be achieved both for the children and for the resource. This is accomplished through designing, assessing and marketing effective programs, products and processes that encourage and support a more actively engaged public in and Neil Wilkinson conducted a site visit for the new location of a convenience station to be located at Basin Cove Campground, part of Doughton Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway

along the Blue Ridge Parkway. You will be hearing more about Kids in Parks the umbrella program that includes TRACK (Trails, Ridges and Active, Caring Kids) project, the Parks As Classrooms program, and other youth outreach efforts. The Kids in Parks project works with partners throughout the community to increase the physical activity of children and their families, improve nutritional choices and connect kids to nature and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The program is made possible by a grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation.

Families get a preview of the TRACK program on March 21, 2009 where kids were challenged with ‘scavenger hunt bandanas’ asking them to find items in the woods. Participants met at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center and hiked about 2 miles.

This program made possible by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation.

Congressman Heath Shuler Knows the Blue Ridge Parkway When Congressman Shuler is asked, “where are you from?” he will mentally go one step further and say more than “I am from North Carolina,” but probably tell you which cove of Swain County he was born in, because that is the way mountain people are. Having grown up “here,” the Congressman has become very intimate with the Blue Ridge Parkway. That intimacy has led to a thorough understanding of the park’s challenges and his cognizance has brought several million dollars in direct support to one of the country’s most

national parks - the Blue Ridge Parkway. His

traditional and proactive dialogue with the park staff has made most of this possible. We are very fortunate to have this level of interest and support from one of our own. Thank you Congressman Shuler!

If we made a mistake .... Please tell us! We make every effort to spell your name right and to recognize all those donors who so graciously make an investment in us and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Please call us if we need to fix something. 336.721.0260 . And if you like this report, we want to hear that , too!
