Sparkling sunshine, crystal clear waters and a unique history waiting to be discovered – this is Malta The Maltese archipelago consists of three main islands – Gozo, Comino and Malta – and several small islets. Millions of years ago, the Maltese Islands were the elevated part of a mass of land extending southwards from nearby Sicily. This continental shelf was submerged when the sea level rose during the inter-glacial period, leaving the land tips exposed in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. The islands are situated in the heart of the Mediterranean, between Europe and Africa. Control of Malta meant control of the Mediterranean and Malta was an ideal stepping stone from one continent to the other. It is therefore no wonder that conquerors down the ages have left their mark on the islands: Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish, the Knights of St John, the French and the British, who held the islands until 1964, when Malta finally became independent. Climate: Malta enjoys a Mediterranean climate with very mild winters and very hot summers. Temperatures in summer can go up to 40°C and more and the winters are very mild. The total annual rainfall, which occurs mainly between October and February, averages around 500 mm.

Geography The Maltese archipelago consists of three inhabited islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino, and two other uninhabited islands. They lie in the middle of the Mediterranean, with Malta 93km south of Sicily and 230km north of North Africa. The total area is 316 square km (Malta 246, Gozo 67, and Comino 2.7). Government Malta is a republic, the parliamentary system and public administration is closely modelled on the Westminster system. The House of Representatives is comprised of 65 Members of Parliament. Language Maltese, which is of Semitic origin, is the official language. However, English is spoken by the majority of the population and Italian is also widely spoken, as is French and German. Population The total population of Malta is around 400,000, of whom 29,000 live on Gozo. Malta is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with an average population density of 1,150 people per sq km. Religion The majority of the Maltese are Roman Catholic, but other religious denominations are also represented.

Il n’est donc pas étonnant que, au travers des âges, les envahisseurs tels que les Phéniciens, Carthaginois, Romains, Arabes, Normands, Espagnols, Français, Chevaliers de l’Ordre de st Jean, aient laissés leurs empreintes sur l’île, de même que les Anglais venus apporter leur aide jusqu’en 1964, date à laquelle Malte obtint son indépendance.

Le climat

Malte jouit d’un climat méditerranéen, avec des hivers doux et des étés très chauds. Les températures peuvent alors dépasser les 40°. Quant aux précipitations, principalement entre octobre et février, leur total annuel

avoisine les 500 mm.

Géographie

L’archipel maltais se compose de trois îles habitées, Malte, Gozo et Comino et de deux autres inhabitées. Langue

Le Maltais, d’origine sémitique, est la langue officielle. Toutefois, l’anglais est pratiqué par la majorité de la population, qui parle également l’italien. Quelques maltais comprennent et parlent un peu de français et d’allemand.

Population

Die Kontrolle über Malta bedeutete gleichzeitig die Kontrolle über das Mittelmeer. Malta war das ideale Sprungbrett zwischen den beiden Kontinenten. Daher ist es auch kein Wunder, dass Eroberer im Laufe der Jahrhunderte ihre Spuren hinterlassen haben. Phönizier, Karthager, Römer, Araber, Normannen, die Ritter des Johanniter Ordens mit ihren spanischen, französischen und deutschen Fürstenhäusern sind alle auf der Insel vertreten gewesen. Historic Buildings Casa Rocca Piccola: Places to visit in Valletta add Casa Rocca Piccola 74, Republic Street, Valletta. A 16th Century Palace of a noble Maltese family. On your visit you will walk through 12 palatial rooms, including the two dinning rooms, a four poster bedroom and a private family chapel and the network of underground tunnels. Lascaris War rooms: These are the original RAF fighter control rooms from which all operations against the germans and the italians were planned and initiated during World War II. National Library houses the archives of the order of St John as well as the archives of the Universita Mediterranean Conference Centre originally a hospital built by the knights. in 1979 it was turned into a conference centre. St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, originally built by the knights as a high rising tower to defend the gate into Valletta. The Auberges: these stately buildings belonged to the different languages that formed part of the order. Of the eight that made up the order only seven had their own building in Valletta. La bibliothèque nationale: Elle abrite aujourd’hui les archives de l’Ordre des Chevaliers de St Jean de Jérusalem, de Rhodes et de Malte, dit «Ordre de Malte », et celle de l’Université. Le Centre Mediterraneen de Conference Construit par les Chevaliers à l’origine pour être un hôpital, c’est devenu en 1979 un centre de conférences. Le Centre du Chevalier de Saint James Aujourd’hui ensemble d’ateliers de création artistique, il fut également construit par les Chevaliers. Les 3 cités Birgu, Bormla, l-lsla: Ces trois villes ceintes au cœur des lignes de fortification Cottonera sont également connues respectivement sous le nom de Vittoriosa, Senglea et Cospicua. Victoria: (Rabat)

This is Gozo’s commercial and cultural Capital. It is a reference point for anyone who wants to explore Gozo, whether on foot or by car. The Citadel, Victoria (Rabat) The Citadel is the fortified and upper most part of Victoria this enclosed fortified part of the town boasts of a cathedral, the Gozo Law courts, the old Bishop’s Palace and a small number of museums displaying various Gozo related exhibits. Only a handful of residents live in the Citadel. From the ramparts one may enjoy a 360o panormaic view of the island Archaeology Museum: Casa Bondi, The Citadel. The museum houses archaeological artefacts from Gozo, amongst which the two famous Neolithic statueues found at Xaghra Circle ill 1986. Cathedral and Museum: The Citadel. The present cathedral was constructed between 1697 and 1711. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady. A major highlight is the trompe I’oeil dome inside the church. Gozo’s National Folklore Museum: The Citadel. Domestic and old industrial tools exhibited in a mediaeval house.

St George’s Basilica: Pjazza San Gorg. Consecrated in 1755, the church situated in Rabat centre, is impressively covered in marble, with a bronze and gilded canopy over the altar.

Ta’ Cenc CLiffs:

Limits of Sannat (25mins walk from Sannat). A sheer precipice that drops straight into the sea below. A delightful location for bird watchers.

Qala Belvedere:

A great location on the outskirts of the Village Qala from where one may enjoy a panoramic view of the Gozo-CominoMalta channel.

XAGHRA Ggantija Temples: possibly the oldest free-standing megalithic structures in the world, dating around 4000BC. Ta’ Kola Windmill: Triq il-Bambina. Xaghra. A restored old windmill, that once served also as a residence and now exhibiting traditional tools. Ninu’s Cave: Triq Jannar. Xerri’s Grotto: Triq l-Ghar Ta’ Xerri. Both small caves are replete with stalactites and stalagmites. Calypso’s Cave: Xaghra. Situated on the cliff’s edge on the outskirts of Xaghra. According to tradition this tiny cave was reputedly the place where Homer’s Ulysses lived for years with the nymph Calypso. The place serves as a belvedere overlooking Ramla l-Hamra below, a sandy beach that takes its name from the reddish colour of the sand.

Julting out from the sea at a small distance from the rocky coast is Fungus Rock or Gebla tal-General. Marsalforn: This summer resort enjoys both a tiny sandy beach as well as an interesting rocky coastline dotted with historic salt pans. Mgarr ix-Xini: limits of Xewkija (25 minutes walk from Sannat) A very narrow creek with a small bay tucked in between the rocky cliffs below Ta’ Cent area in Sannat. San Blas Cove: A hidden but charming sloping landscape that leads onto a tiny sandy beach. Best reached on foot. Some 30 minutes distance from Nadur. Xlendi: A narrow creek which developed from a tiny fishing hamlet into a fullyfledged seaside resort. The bay is flanked by an impressive cliff on one side. Xwejni Bay: This creek is one of those hid den charms of Gozo with coralline cliffs. It can be reached via a stretch of salt pans which are still harvested regularly.

Unweit der felsigen Küste ragt der Fungus Rock, Ġebla talĠeneral, aus dem Meer. Ħondoq ir-Rummien: Einer der ruhigen Strände Gozos, der durch seine relativ abgeschiedene Lage besticht. Marsalforn: Dieser Badeort hat sowohl einen Sandstrand als auch eine interessante Felsküste mit historischen Salzpfannen. Die Bucht ist wegen ihrer Promenade auch bei den Gozitanern und Maltesern sehr beliebt. Mġarr ix-Xini: Innerhalb Xewkija gelegen. Eine sehr schmale Felsenbucht mit einem kleinen Strand, eingebettet in die felsigen Klippen unterhalb des Gebiets Ta’ Ċenċ in Sannat. San Blas Cove: Eine versteckte aber reizvolle Hügellandschaft, die zu einem kleinen Sandstrand führt. Man erreicht sie am besten zu Fuß (ca. 30 Minuten Spaziergang von Nadur). Xlendi: Eine kleine Bucht, die sich von einem kleinen Fischerdorf zu einem gut ausgestatteten Ferienort entwickelt hat. Die Bucht ist auf der einen Seite von einer steilen Klippe umgeben. Xwejni Bay: Diese Bucht ist eine der versteckten Reize von Gozo mit korallenbedeckten Felsgewölben. Sie ist über eine Strecke von Salzpfannen, in denen noch heute Salz gewonnen wird, zu erreichen.
