From Our Cole Hardware Family to Yours: We Wish You the Very Best of the Season Happy holidays. It is a trite greeting at this time of year, that’s for sure. It is as Webster and Oxford indicate: overused and lacking freshness. But in this instance, I feel trite is a good thing. In our diverse and often crazy world, it is comforting to wish people happy holidays in the sincere hope that the season will smile on everyone. So, with a broad stroke of the proverbial pen, I wish you happy holidays, and I hope ours are too. For Cole H ardware, 2016 was a wildly crazy year. Certainly the last half! Our nightmare was the total destruction of our Mission Street store by the fire that took out six buildings last June. We were blessed though: nobody was hurt, all of our patrons and staff exited safely, and our staff began work immediately at our other stores. Still, recovery isn’t easy, and as I write this in November, financially at

Pop-Up Holiday Shoppe and Christmas Trees on Mission Street!

Mission Street tradition: Karen and Jacob Anderson holiday tree shopping

From the day after Thanksgiving right up until Christmas Day, we’ll be back on Mission Street selling Christmas trees and holiday decor. We’ll be open each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 3293 Mission Street at 29th Street—just across from our former Mission location. We’ll have both live and cut trees, garland, poinsettias, lights, lots of decor, gift wrap, and more. I know that many, many folks who were regulars at our Mission Street location had a family tradition of picking out their tree and holiday supplies at the continued on page 2...

Join Us at Our Anniversary Sale! At Cole Hardware, we feel incredibly blessed that after more than five decades and the countless changes we see every day in the Bay Area, we are still a part of this wonderful City, and now operating in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood, too. And we’re excited about our new North Beach and SOMA stores opening in the new year! Our founder, Dave Karp, often regaled us with his fond memories of serving the “love children” of the 1960s and the starving, yet-to-be-discovered musicians of the Haight-Ashbury, including frequent shopper Janice Joplin. (It took Dave a while to figure out why sales of alligator clips were so brisk!) We’ll be celebrating Dave’s legacy this year in our groovy, limited-edition tie-dye T-shirts, created especially for us by artist Norma Brooks. Pick up one of these one-of-a-kind artworks for $24.99, available in men’s sizes small–XL. Join us as we celebrate 55 years since Dave’s purchase of our flagship store (which has been in Cole Valley since the 1920s). While we will be celebrating with a 20% off sale all day, from 5:00 pm to closing continued on page 4...

Annual Toy Drive Through December 20 Once again, Cole H ardware’s San Francisco stores are hosting a toy drive for Arriba Juntos’s La Posada celebration. Arriba Juntos, which translates from Spanish to “upward together,” is a nonprof it community organization that was founded in 1965 in the Mission District. It works to support thousands of individuals and families across the City who are the most underserved and at risk for prolonged poverty. Our Rock ridge store will collect new toys for the popular Toys for Tot s program, which provides toys to thousands of children from lowincome families. For your donation, we suggest a toy from Green Toys™, a Bay Area company that makes a unique, fun line of classic children’s toys constructed from recycled plast ic cont ai ners a nd ot her environmentally friendly materials. Our partner in the toy drive for the past eight years, Green Toys has donated hundreds of their toys to our yearly collection. We carry a variety of Green Toys at all of our Cole H ardware locations, including race cars, rockets, airplanes, and seaplanes. The toys range in price from $4.99 to $29.99. Come check them out for this special eve nt a nd stock up for yo u r ow n h ol id ay g i f tgiving needs as well. We will be col le ct i ng new, u nw rapped t oy s through December 20.

Warm Coat Drive Friday, December 9, Through Monday, December 12 All Cole Hardware Locations

Although winters in the Bay Area are relatively mild most years, we do experience some intense cold spells during the season. While many of us will be sporting new coats this winter, our old, gently used coats can still be put to good use. During the weekend of December 9–12, all Cole H ardware locations will be collecting coats, scarves, gloves, and hats that will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Vincentian Help Desk and St. Paul’s Pantry for Hope. These programs are a lifeline for those who are low income or homeless, helping people meet their most basic needs with dignity and respect. Look in your closet and bring us any of your old, warm coats during our weekend drive. Clean, gently used hats, scarves, gloves, and mittens are also welcome!

If you take public transit, even on occasion, nothing beats the convenience of an all-in-one Clipper card. We have become somewhat of a cashless society, due in part to the versatility of our debit and credit cards. Scrambling for the exact fare on a bus, train, or ferry is a hassle, too, especially when riding multiple transit lines. As an added customer service, our Cole Street store, in addition to our Rockridge and downtown Fourth Street locations, now offers Clipper cards and can fully load them with transit passes, discount tickets, ride book, and cash value. All applicable fares, discounts, and transfer rules are easily tracked. This lets you customize your cards for your own transit needs. You can also use Clipper to pay for parking in a limited number of locations. The Clipper card can hold multiple passes, ride books, or tickets (which are specific to the transit system being used), as well as up to $300 in cash value at one time and up to $250 in parking cash value. Cash value on your Clipper card can be used to ride any p a r t icip at i ng t r a n sit system. You can add value (in the form of both passes and cash value) to your card as you go. Use Clipper on Muni, BART, AC Tr a n sit , V TA , Sa mTr a ns, Calt r ai n, Golden Gate Transit and Ferry, and San Francisco Bay Ferry.

Boris—Repair Referral Service Electrician Proper electrical wiring in a home is essential for safe occupancy, and it’s even more crucial over the holidays when households tend to light up everything from Christmas trees to windows to wreaths. Many older homes in San Francisco do not have an adequate number of electrical outlets to keep pace with the number of appliances, televisions, computers, hair dryers, and coffeemakers that we rely on daily. One of the most common problems around the holidays is overloading circuits, which is also one of the leading causes of home fires. Another common mistake is using multiple extension cords to plug in one appliance. If you are unsure of the safety of the appliance setups in your home, you may need a licensed electrician, like Boris, from our Repair Referral Service. Boris can advise you on what you need to update your home’s electrical wiring. Any of the following situations would benefit from the services of a licensed electrician: • If a fuse blows or a circuit breaker trips frequently, you most likely need a wellqualified electrician to determine the nature of the problem and to fix it. • If the main electrical panel has circuit breakers, you should flip them off and back on once a year. This maintenance procedure will help keep them working. If the breakers malfunction, you need a qualified electrician to test the circuit breakers. • If extension cords or plug — Rick Karp, President, aka Keeper of the Karma

• Competitive pricing • Incomparable service • Specializing in hard-to-find items • Free Bay Area delivery on most items

Boris, our trusted electrician adaptors are being used to plug multiple appliances into the same outlet, you need a qualified electrician to install more outlets on a new or different branch of circuits. • If any outlet or switch wall plates feel hot to the touch, you need a qualified electrician to determine what the problem is. Boris has been with our service for nearly 15 years. In his native Croatia, he performed underwater electrical wiring as well as residential and commercial installations. If you feel that your home or business may need some electrical upgrades or more outlets installed to keep up with your “wired” lifestyle, contact our Repair Referral Service at 415/200-3430 or e -mail homerepai r@ colehardware.com.

December Garden Tasks Tips from Our Garden Team: Bill and Any

During the winter and rainy months, our focus turns to decorating and entertaining indoors. A brisk, sunny winter day can still provide an excellent opportunity to tend to your garden and prepare it for spring. a Pruning: Now is the time to prune back your roses, f r uit t rees, and shrubs. This handy prune shear stick will easily handle the job. (Sk u 7100373, $49.99) a Weed Prevention: Plan ahead if weeding is not your favorite hobby. Corn gluten provides preemergent cont rol of dandelions, crabgrass, and other common weeds. Use around roses, f lowers, bulbs, vegetables, trees, shrubs, and on lawns. A 5-pound bag will cover a 300-square-foot area. (Sku 7135239, $14.99) a Planting: Keep your vegetable garden growing with seeds from our line of Botanical Interests. Fava beans, artichoke, lettuce, and radishes can all be planted now. Don’t forget you can also sow spring and California wild f l owe r m i xe s . Check out our large selection and keep on planting. You will be rewarded in a few months.

a  Frost P rote c t ion: Should we get an uncommon frost, be prepared with the Gardeneer ® Harvest Guard® garden cover to protect more sensitive plants. The 5' x 25' cover floats over plants to t rap heat and does not require stakes. (Sku 7 17 0 7 9 8 , $14.99)

a Mulch: More rain on the way can also mean runoff. Placing mulch and bark around plants can help abate this. (Mulch: Sku 75958, $8.99; Bark: Sku 7094212 , $8.99) Planting on hillsides also aides in preventing soil runoff if we get heavy rains. Holiday Plants: Winter annuals such as cyclamen and primrose can really spruce up a winter garden, and these plants also look inviting for the holiday season on a porch or lining the stairs.

Keep Your Gardening Tools in Shape! It’s winter and the plants are resting, so now is a perfect time to take care of those tools you’ve been using all year. Good garden tools will give you many years of service, given proper care. Here’s what to do to make them last: • Clean tools off after using them. This does not have to take long—simply hose down and quickly brush off soil with a stiff brush. Periodically give metal parts a “once over” with a wire brush and wipe with oil to fend off rust. • Treat aging wooden handles with boiled linseed oil or varnish (as many coats as the wood can take). • Sharpen edges of hoes and shovels with a file (file in one direction only, toward the outside of the edge, following the original angle). An abrasive disk attached to an electric drill is useful for more thorough sharpening (wear eye protection). — Rick Karp, President, aka Keeper of the Karma

• Protect tools from the elements when not in use. If you arrange a place for each tool to hang, you’ll be more likely to return it to its “home” when the job is done.

Pa p e r W h i t e s: Don’t forget that paper whites or narcissus bulbs take about four to six weeks to bloom, so start them early. To keep them f rom getting too tall, give them a little vodka! Seven parts water to one part vodka should do the trick.

Cut Trees: Keep your cut tree fresh by keeping it well watered. Use Santa ® Tree Preserve in the water to help. (Sku 96350, $4.49) Both live Christmas trees and freshly cut trees can be kept in tiptop condition by applying a little Cloud Cover ® to seal in moisture. (Sku 7102965, $13.99) If there is any left over, it can be used on roses before black spot or rust attack. Fresh Wr e a t h s : Prolong the lush green hues of w reaths and garlands by spritzing with water occasionally. See you in the garden!

Weekend Tree Delivery: $20 As always, our stores will have freshly cut trees available in a variety of sizes. We’re happy to deliver to your home for $20 on the weekends. Just arrange for delivery at the time of purchase, allowing for a two hour window. We also have live potted trees, poinsettias, wreaths, garland, and other seasonal plants to make your home more festive. Cole Hardware’s Hardware Hotline

What’s In Season Tessa’s Temptations The holidays are almost here, and it’s time to start planning your holiday feast! Whether you plan to serve turkey, ham, or a good old-fashioned holiday goose, you are going to need some killer side dishes to round out the meal. If you would like

B lue C hee se M ashe d P otatoe s Ingredients: • 2 pounds potatoes • 4 tablespoons butter • ¾ cup heavy cream • 4 ounces blue cheese crumbles

to try something a little different this year, here are some of my favorite twists on holiday meal basics. —Tessa

Fre sh C ranberr y C ompote Ingredients: • 6 ounces fresh cranberries • 1 tablespoon orange zest • ½ cup sugar • 1 cup water • Pinch salt • 1 teaspoon cinnamon, or to taste • 1 tablespoon cornstarch • ¼ cup orange juice

Directions: Wash potatoes and peel, or leave peels on according to taste. Cut into quarters and boil until tender. Drain potatoes. Heat butter and cream until hot, but not boiling. Add crumbled blue cheese to butter and cream mixture and stir. Pour sauce over potatoes and mash or whip.

Directions: In saucepan over medium heat, combine the cranberries, zest, sugar, water, salt, and cinnamon. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes. Dissolve cornstarch in the orange juice. Add the mixture to the cranberries and stir to blend. Simmer for another 15 minutes until the mixture is thick. Remove from heat and cool completely. Cover and refrigerate until chilled.

C ornbrea d S tuffing wi t h S age B u t ter Ingredients: • ½ cup butter (1 stick), room temperature • ½ bunch fresh sage, finely chopped • Salt and pepper • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 1 loaf cornbread, cubed (about 6 cups) • 1 large egg, beaten • ½ cup heavy cream • ½ cup chicken stock

Directions: Combine butter and sage, mash with fork until well mixed, and season to taste with salt and pepper. In sauté pan, melt half the sage butter (4 tablespoons), add onion, and cook until onion is golden. Remove from heat. Put cornbread cubes in large bowl, add onion mixture, and mix. Add egg, heavy cream, and just enough chicken stock to moisten stuffing. Toss well to combine. Stuffing can be cooked in turkey or baked alone in baking dish at 350°F for 30 to 45 minutes. Use remaining sage butter to baste turkey or to butter dinner rolls.

Tips for Holiday Painting Projects We are coming in full-speed ahead to the holiday season! With family and friends starting to gather this time of year, holiday hosts want a warm, welcoming home atmosphere. Aside from simply fluffing the pillows, consider a small refresh project instead of undertaking a major painting job during this busy time of year. Here are few ideas and tips to tackle a last-minute holiday paint project.

Paint the Exterior Front Door

This is one of the first things a guest will see when arriving. A statement color will welcome guests and add an exciting pop to the look of your home. Placing a bold wreath or accent piece on the door can also give the entrance a whole new look.

Paint an Accent Wall

Tackling a full room makeover is a ton of work. Moving the furniture and everything out of the room is a daunting task of its own. By focusing on an accent wall, you can just pull the furniture and wall hangings off of a single wall, put up a fresh coat of paint, and move everything back without having to dishevel the entire room.

Focus on a Common Gathering Area

If you’re looking to refresh the look of your home for guests, focus on the rooms that people will be spending the most time in, such as the dining room, bathroom, or guest room if they will be staying. Sure, you may have been wanting to repaint your bedroom closet for a year now, but this isn’t realistically the best time to tackle that project! Focus on common areas.

Refresh Furniture Instead of Walls

Maybe there are end tables in the main gathering area that are outdated and looking drab? Amy Howard at Home® can easily update old furniture with a fresh look and transform a room!

Use a Zero-VOC Product

The last thing you want is to have your dining room smell like new paint when it’s supposed to be filled with the aromas of roasted turkey and homemade pumpkin pie. Benjamin Moore’s Natura zero-VOC paints are very low odor. 6

Environmental Info GOOD FOR THE EARTH—WE TAKE ACTION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT!

Recycle Your Christmas Tree

Lights for Life is dedicated to making the lives of children with cancer and their families a little easier. We are setting out to help them accomplish this through the recycling of old holiday string lights. Over 200 million strings of lights are sold each year in the United States, with many of them eventually ending up in our landfills. Lights for Life and Cole H ardware are asking you to not throw away your old and broken lights this year. If Lights for Life can collect just a small percentage of these light strings, it will go a long way in helping those families of children with cancer. The light strands are sold to recyclers for the copper they contain. The funds received from these sales are used to provide financial assistance to the families of children with cancer, along with sponsoring a kids’ camp. Cole H ardware will once again serve as a collection site. Just bring your spent light strands to any of our four locat ions through December 31.

Each year, tens of thousands of Christmas trees are collected throughout the Bay Area, fed through a mulcher, and used for erosion control. Sunset Scavenger and Golden Gate Disposal and Recycling Co. will pick up trees left on the curbside on your regular garbage days. Visit www.sunsetscavenger .com to see when tree collection will begin. Oakland residents can visit California Waste Solutions website at www.calwaste. com for collection dates. Please note: All ornaments, including tinsel, must be removed, as well as plastic and metal stands. Trees with wood stands are collectable, but please do not put them in plastic bags. Only “plain old trees” will be accepted for recycling!

Thermostatic temperature control, automatic or continuous fan operation, and two heat settings (low 750 watt or high 1,500 watt) allow you to create the perfect environment. With a 5-year satisfaction guarantee, Vornado heaters are not your average space heater. (Sku 6103071, $89.99; Sku 6208516, $99.99)

Adopt-a-Family

For the past six Christmas seasons, our Rockridge store manager, Tessa, has participated in a holiday adopt-a-family program. She has adopted families both personally and for us at Cole Hardware. Whoever could, pitched in with presents and gift cards for these mothers and their children, to make their Christmas special. Tessa will once again be adopting two families this holiday season. If you would like to donate a gift or gift card to one of these families, please contact Tessa to find out what the family has requested and the ages of the children. E-mail tessa@colehardware.com or ask for her when you’re shopping at our Rockridge location.

While we’re here in San Francisco serving our community, our T-shirts are out gallivanting around the globe. We love to see photos of our shirts and totes in exotic places. Send us a photo of yourself or a loved one sporting a C ole H ardware T-shirt in Budapest or Boston, and we’ll send you a $5 gift card and publish the photo.
