Alma Falls Awake With Her Friend
E
ach night Alma falls awake into her dreams. Tonight she rediscovers a long lost and cherished friend who happens to be a big black bird—and happens to be inside an egg, on her head! Her dream begins deep in the forest where small birds quietly lay a large, warm egg on the hard knot at the top of her head. The large, warm egg wiggles and jiggles atop her head, makes her tall and powerful, and then, cracks open. Seeing her friend suddenly there before her, she realizes how much she missed him. Their time together is brief, but they manage to share so much. For Alma and her friend, it is a night to remember.

JULIA LUNK was born in rural Hungary. After high school, Lunk followed the call of her art and left the rural countryside for Budapest where she studied for five years at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. There she began studying graphic design, but then received a master’s degree in printmaking. Her love for painting emerged during university while participating yearly in plein air symposiums in the countryside. Exhibited internationally since 1993, her works are inspired by dreams, faraway places, and plants—life’s little miracles. She lives in Boulder, Colorado. SARAH WARNER wrote Alma’s story after seeing an exhibit of Julia Lunk’s paintings. Deeply inspired by the exhibit, she wanted to bring to life some key characters and motifs she saw throughout Lunk’s artwork. A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, she runs a literary agency and lives in Boulder, Colorado. 2

FINE ART
Paintings by Carol Aronson-Shore Essays by Kimberly Alexander, Ph.D., and Mara Witzling, Ph.D. Foreword by Robert Flynn Johnson
The Shape of Color Strawbery Banke and Monhegan Island
C
arol Aronson-Shore describes her primary subject as “the way color shapes pictorial light and space,” and nowhere is this more evident than in her signature landscapes and seascapes. Continuing in the tradition of American Luminist painters, Aronson-Shore uses color to create paintings characterized by a glowing light that adds depth and warmth to the experience. Finding inspiration in her hometown of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Aronson-Shore uses color, light, and form to explore the historic museum village in her Strawbery Banke series. This series developed from her earlier paintings of Monhegan Island, where she captured the rocky hillsides dotted with simple structures. Her paintings depict human shelters from a past time as well as their relationships to each other and to the natural landscape surrounding them. The Strawbery Banke Museum has provided the artist with a familiar subject combining an experience of time, place, and memory. Carol Aronson-Shore uses her finely tuned skills as a landscape artist to explore the built environment set against its natural surroundings. It is through this perspective that she artfully presents the contrast between man-made structures and the countryside. In Aronson-Shore’s paintings, the natural environment is not just a backdrop for the built environment, as each setting is a thoughtful exploration of the interplay between the two. As Kimberly Alexander writes, “The series offers new glimpses and original concepts to an environment steeped in history, creating fresh perspectives and innovative dialogues—held in balance by color, form, and light.”

“For more than a century and a half, painters from all over have found the streets, buildings, water, and landscape of Portsmouth worth painting. While a few like John Samuel Blunt and Mary Harris came from the city itself, a few settled along the Piscataqua and some summer visitors joined the Piscataqua Sketch Club to exhibit here from the 1890s. That Strawbery Banke Museum captures so many little-known views of the area by artists better known elsewhere is a testament to this enduring charm and visual interest.” —Richard M. Candee Professor Emeritus, Boston University
hile Portsmouth's history as a center of commerce, industry, and politics is well established, we actually know surprisingly little about the city's rich history in, and contribution to, the visual arts. This exhibition will help reveal the depth and importance of Portsmouth as a center of culture and inspiration over the past two hundred plus years. Painting Portsmouth: A Brush with the Past provides a unique opportunity to explore how several generations of painters, from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, envisioned this prominent seacoast city. Our goal is to introduce visitors to an exhibition of significant Portsmouth paintings drawn from private collections, art galleries, public institutions, and auction houses, which have been rarely, if ever, seen and are little known to the public or to many within the art community.
KIMBERLY ALEXANDER, PH.D., brings years of museum, research, teaching, and writing experience to her position as chief curator at Strawbery Banke Museum. A resident of Newmarket, New Hampshire, where she lives with her husband, Dane, and daughters Lydia and Abbie, she finds the seacoast a constant source of inspiration. JAMIE LAFLEUR is a painter, gallery owner, and independent curator who has worked professionally in the fine arts field for nearly twenty years. He lives and works in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with his wife, Angie, and two children, Jamison and Ella. LaFleur has focused his career on paintings of and the history of painting in his native state of New Hampshire.

SKIING/PHOTOGRAPHY
David Irons Foreword by John Christie
Sunday River Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future
O
n December 19, 1959, Sunday River Skiway officially opened, mostly through the work of volunteers. Since opening day fifty years ago, with a T-bar and just a handful of runs, Sunday River Skiway has grown into one of the busiest ski resorts in New England. Ten thousand acres of private land encompasses several peaks, and the first trails, with excellent grooming and snowmaking, are still among the most popular: Upper and Lower Cascades, Upper and Lower Sunday Punch, Rocking Chair, and Crossbow. Sunday River now also includes a unique, renowned golf course, the Sunday River Golf Club. In Sunday River, David Irons gives a firsthand account of the history of the Sunday River Skiway. Irons was there in the very beginning, on opening day as a skier and later as the ski patrol director. His account includes such highlights as the 1970–71 winter training for the Green Berets, the 1976 NCAA championships and the Canadian American Intercollegiate Alpine series, the Gould Sunday River program, and the Snowboard World Cup. Through text, historical and contemporary photographs, and period marketing pieces, Sunday River explores the establishment and evolution of one of New England’s most celebrated, time-honored, beloved recreational attractions. Whether fondly remembered by old friends of Sunday River Skiway, or discovered by new acquaintances to this fantastic resort area, Sunday River completely captures the historical and timeless value of this landmark destination.

“On its fiftieth birthday, Sunday River deserves just such a handsome historical volume as this, and only Dave Irons, a local boy who was there riding the T-bar on opening day, could have written it. Irons’s thorough research, underpinned by firsthand experience and vivid memories, make for an entertaining and highly informative read, one that any fan of the River or Maine’s ski history will cherish. Congratulations to both the author and the resort.” —Joe Cutts, SKI Magazine
DAVID IRONS grew up in South Paris, Maine, learning to ski on a small hill behind his family’s home. Irons continued to ski wherever possible, and following the opening of Sunday River in 1959, Irons became a regular weekend skier there. He joined the Sunday River Ski Patrol in 1968, which he directed from 1971 to 1982. During twenty years of patrolling, Irons achieved certification by the National Ski Patrol and the Professional Ski Patrol Association and served as an examiner for both organizations until 1988, when broadcasting and writing became his primary focus. www.TheBlueTree.com • BLUE TREE • CATALOG NUMBER ONE

“Carla Snow has done a terrific job with New Hampshire’s foods, wines, and wineries. The photographs and recipes capture the state’s produce so well and the book is both educational and entertaining! Change the state motto to ‘Live Well and Dine!’” —Michael Mondavi
ne may be surprised to know that New Hampshire, a state with four seasons and dramatic weather changes, has its own wine country, but Carla Snow, the state’s first female Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW), can certainly attest to it. In Wine & Dine with New Hampshire, Snow offers an in-depth look at New Hampshire’s award winning wines, ciders, and meads, and the pioneer companies who create them: Candia Vineyards, Farnum Hill Ciders, Flag Hill Winery and Distillery, Jewell Towne Vineyards, LaBelle Winery, Piscassic Pond Winery, and Zorvino Vineyards. Blueberries have long conjured New England summers, and apples evoked New England autumns—now it is time to add grapes and honey to our sense of the region, and to experience all their flavors year-round. Thanks to advances in hybridization, with cold tolerant grape varietals developed at wineries and universities, winemaking is now possible even in New Hampshire’s relatively chilly climate. Illustrated with stunning color photography, and winery labels, and featuring recipes created specifically to pair with or incorporate the beverages described, Wine & Dine with New Hampshire delivers the good news that New Hampshire viniculture and its sister arts are making a splash at home and abroad.
CARLA SNOW has more than twenty years of restaurant experience. She studied at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in Australia, earning both Culinary and Sommeliers certificates. Snow moved to Bordeaux and then the Rhône, to apprentice with the worlds best winemakers. Upon returning to her home state, New Hampshire, Snow began selecting wines for the areas finest restaurants and stores. Snow lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire with her husband and daughter. BRIAN SMESTAD was drawn to the art of photography at age twelve, and by twenty-two his first book was published. ong before they were conquered—if, indeed, they have been—the White Mountains of New Hampshire imprinted themselves in the mind’s eye of all who saw them. They held a sacred place in the spirituality of local tribes, who treated with particular respect that inhospitable peak we know as Mount Washington, with its fearsome winds and sudden storms. In early colonial times, only the adventurous would approach, but later, trailblazers and enterprising settlers opened the mountain region to travelers, whose numbers multiplied with the circulation of paintings and engravings capturing the pristine and rugged beauty of the area. This second volume in the Visions in Granite series offers a glimpse—through the immediacy of expertly rendered landscapes—of the White Mountains and of the region’s lakes, notches, and ledges as they were first encountered. And it shows us those same places through the eyes of contemporary painters, providing reassurance that some of the state’s most notable features still possess the power to awe and inspire.

Two Lives: One Passion The Life and Work of William Jurian Kaula and Lee Lufkin Kaula
W
e begin our examination of the life and work of artist William Jurian Kaula and his wife and fellow painter, Lee Lufkin, when they meet in Europe during Academic study in the 1890s. In the first half of the twentieth century, they married, lived, and worked in the vibrant atmosphere of the city of Boston. Over the next forty years the couple traveled, collected antiques, cultivated elaborate terraced gardens in New Hampshire, and most importantly painted together sharing a kinesthetic relationship based in their mutual respect for one another and a shared love of art. What is truly remarkable is that their lives reflect the context of typical American conventions of culture and society. What is special about this couple was their ability to conduct their lives with a deep affection for one another while encouraging their respective artistic talents. Both artists specialized in their craft and subject but were united in their quest to commit themselves to their work. Through text, paintings, photographs, sketches, and journal entries, this book explores the veracity of the lives of two prolific painters who shared an appreciation for the world as exhibited in their works of art.

Introduction by Russell Lord Essay by Tom Crockett
Carl Austin Hyatt Photography
W
hen one views the photographs of Carl Austin Hyatt— whether a sensual nude or a luminous seascape—one is first struck by the impeccable and beautiful surfaces. The photographs evoke a palpable sense of desire. Hyatt knows desire and his images tingle with it. Linger a moment and allow yourself to be drawn deeper, past the surfaces and into an inner space. The foamy rush of ocean, the languid sigh of the model, the preternatural stillness of the standing stones, or the whisper of the salt piles becomes real sound against the inner ear. Hyatt’s commitment to find, and transmit, this depth of connection—to the soul of a stone, to a landscape, or to a person—is the mark of his work. His photographs reflect the conscious awareness of the miraculous that emanates from all of creation. No matter how modest the landscape, or how muted the subject, Hyatt manages to draw from it the numinous. The best of Hyatt’s images invite us to see, see into, and see through. This is no trick or projection. This work has that Zen-like reverence for space and emptiness that in Japanese tradition invites the Kami or spirits to be present. The combination of master craftsmanship and uncompromising artistic vision are revealed through a twentyyear period and a selection from this period is published for the first time in this edition.

ortsmouth: A Historical Perspective takes the reader on a journey into the past and captures the spirit of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. By pairing nineteenth and twentieth century photographs with today's images, Portsmouth-photographer Brian Smestad provides an innovative look at the historical community's heritage. Portsmouth combines historic and contemporary photographs with excerpts from An Old Town by the Sea by revered essayist Thomas Bailey Aldrich. Together, the photographs and the essay reveal a place that began as a small port town that evolved into a thriving city on the New Hampshire seacoast. Aldrich recalls the day when President George Washington visited Portsmouth and said he “was not much impressed by the architecture.” Today, Smestad shows the beauty of this city and its New England charm. Although much has changed, there is still of hint of old Portsmouth downtown, on the waterfront, and in Strawberry Banke.
