PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Nancy Cummins

Plumbing & Mechanical Industry Makes the State a Better Place

V

olunteers are worth their weight in gold. They share their time and talents without any compensation. The broad definition of volunteering is offering to do work for no compensation, but people tend to do work for organizations that have some personal meaning for them that gives them fulfillment. Volunteers are greatly needed, and in fact, many organizations, like ours, depend on them. As President of the MPMCA, I couldn’t be more proud than I was as I reviewed our last MPMCA Magazine on Volunteering. I wanted to let you know what an outstanding job you’re doing to make your communities, and the individuals living in them, a better place to live The compassion our memberships show to the people we serve is an inspiration for us all. I’ve noticed how you treat everyone with respect and kindness, no matter what the situation is. We all know how stressful it can be for the people who find themselves in need of the services we provide, and your actions go a long way toward helping them keep their dignity. I just want you to know that your work hasn’t gone unnoticed. Whether you are involved in traditionally industryrelated programs such as the HEAT’S ON Project, Waters Off, Habitat for Humanity, Christmas in April or July, when you install plumbing and mechanical equipment, or service their equipment to help to insure safe and productive operation, or simply install new carbon monoxide detectors or smoke detectors, you make a tremendous difference and should be proud of your efforts. I know we are.

Forget the worry of a flooded basement with innovative pumping solutions

We’ve always been control freaks Ion Technologies last much longer than traditional float switches

Ion Products digital level control systems utilize the Ion switch; a solid state sensing technology with no moving parts to wear or fail. They are designed to operate for over 2 million cycles.

Our controls warn you if your sump pump motor is starting to fail so you can replace it before the water damage happens.

Our controls warn you if it can't drain the sump pit

because the pipes are frozen, the pump is bad, the impeller is damaged, the cord is unplugged, whatever the reason.

Only if you have the Ion Solution can you really be fully protected. Call your Ion Solution Certified Installer today or find one online at www.ionproducts.net.

Sparrow Children’s Center Telethon The 2015 Sparrow Children’s Telethon on May 29-30th raised more than $861,000 to benefit the young patients of the Sparrow Children’s Center. 3MCA and UA Local 333 were phone bank sponsors and jointly donated $10,000. UA Local 333 members manned the phone bank which included UA Local 333 Assistant Business Manager Price Dobernick. Executive Director Becky Brimley presented a $5,000 check donation made by 3MCA. The money raised during the telethon will help fund improvements to the Sparrow Children’s Center and ensure the ongoing advancement of medical care for all children in Mid-Michigan – regardless of their ability to pay.

20th Annual Doug Griffith Breakfast Raises $3,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network Sparrow’s Center, UA Local 333 and 3MCA partnered to recognize a leader in community service in tradition of labor leader Doug Griffith to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network on Friday, June 5, 2015. Hosted by Labor Community Relations Specialist Claire Corr, the event raised $3,000 this year (pictured right, 2nd row, with UA Local 333 Assistant Business Manager Price Dobernick). The featured “Miracle Child” was 12-yearold Garrett McGowan of Lansing (pictured top, right, with his mother, Heidi). Garrett was only a year old when he was diagnosed with cavernous malformations. These large bleeding masses are located in his brain stem, which is the area of the brain that controls your heart, breathing and other vital functions. Garrett has had many life-threatening episodes that required hospitalization and intensive rehabilitation therapy at Sparrow. He continually battles brain bleeds, seizures and paralysis. After critical surgeries and procedures, he must relearn everyday activities, like walking or swallowing; many of which we take for granted. Against all odds, Garrett continues to fight his condition and live his life. The Doug Griffith Service Award was presented this year to Patty Farhat, longtime employee of the Michigan State AFL-CIO, Local 459, Office & Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) (pictured middle, right, with Claire Corr). Claire stated that Patty is the type of person to go the extra mile to help someone and is always there to help other people. Claire continued to state that Patty has no ego and “what you see, is what you get.” The event was well attended by many community leaders and is an effective fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network, with over $73,000 being raised in its twenty-year history. Bay Area Association The Bay Area Association is proud to report that Rick Wenzlick, William E. Walter Mechanical Company was named Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors Association Contractor of the Year for 2015. It is hard to put into mere words the kind of man Rick Wenzlick is. When you think of honesty, integrity, friend, hard worker, kind, compassionate, and caring person, Rick comes to mind immediately. Rick began his apprenticeship with Local Union 85 in 1981, graduated in 1985, and immediately was appointed foreman with the William E. Walter Mechanical Company. Even as Rick was serving his apprenticeship he exhibited great leadership skills, had an outgoing personality, and was well liked by his fellow union workers and the elite of the William E. Walter Company. Rick met and married his beautiful wife Becky and has three children, Bruce, Emily, and Hannah. All three children think the world of their Dad. With keeping his family first, Rick now also manages the William E. Walter Company and farms 200 acres of corn and beans, and also raises and sells 30 to 50 beef cattle every year. In his spare time, Rick built a house for his son Bruce and his daughter Hannah, and is enjoying every minute with his grandchildren. Rick is a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Maple Grove, is the current Vice President of the Bay Area Association, serves as an Insurance Trustee, is a member of the negotiating team for the Bay Area Association, helps with the “Heats On” project, Coats for Kids drive, and is the Maple Grove “Septic Inspector”. If there were more than 24 hours in a day, Rick would take those hours and devote them to helping his family, community and business.

Are Your Property Limits Accurate?

I

magine you get that middle-of-the-night call every business owner dreads: There’s smoke coming from the roof at your main location. When you arrive, the entire building is in flames. The fire gets put out shortly after dawn, but it’s evident the fire and water damage is extensive. That shiny new equipment is now scrap, the shelves, light fixtures, inventory, carpet, family photos—anything and everything—ruined. Now imagine finding out that, while the walls and roof were insured at their full replacement value, not much else was. Not calculating replacement value for property contents is a costly mistake some business owners make when valuing their business insurance limits. Don’t be one of them! When discussing insurance values with your provider, be sure you include anything that could affect value: new machines or equipment, inventory (raw material, in-process and finished product, etc.), property of others, remodels, etc. And, don’t forget to consider inflation and other valuation factors. The amount you have on your balance sheet or the item’s cost new may not be an accurate reflection of your contents’ replacement costs. Remember, you probably had time to shop around and buy the items at the best possible price, but you won’t have that luxury when you need to get your business back up and running as fast as possible. Determining the replacement cost of your business personal property (contents) is involved, and it requires your time and expertise. Yes, it may be time-consuming to do a walk-through to list floor-to-ceiling contents and determine accurate costs, but it is the best way to calculate true value to help ensure you’re adequately covered if you have a claim. Federated Insurance uses one of the finest building value estimation tools in the marketplace to help business owners determine adequate values. Doing what you can to make sure you are insured to value offers an added layer of peace of mind. The extra time spent now will be much appreciated in the unfortunate event of a loss. And, to protect all your hard work, you will want to store the documentation in a safe, off-site location to make sure you can readily access it when it’s needed most.
