Hello and Happy New Year

hope all of your holidays were peaceful and happy. Now, we are into a new year 2015! I can hardly believe it. With the new year comes our upcoming Expo. Successful contractors, those who consistently make a profit, generally make a determined effort to accomplish a number of things. Some of the most important include: o Hiring the best tradesperson and supervisory personnel available, o Attracting and keeping the best is the basis for a strong contracting shop. o Keeping on top of new developments in the field, o Looking for new methods and ideas to improve operations, o Looking for ways to meet new opportunities in the market place o Maintaining a reputation for superior job performance and constantly promoting this reputation through contacts and advertising customers and prospects o Remembering, doing tomorrows job is nearly as important as doing today’s. There are many other things the successful contractor must know: insurance, purchase of supplies and materials, inventory control, observance of local, county and state codes, and how to collect for work done. Running a contracting company is no job for an amateur! The men and women who know the importance of keeping on top and in tune with this ever-changing industry will be at the Michigan Mechanical/PHC Expo 2015. Local 174 Third Party Administrator Update Local 174/WMMCA Trustees conducted a review with a request for proposal (RFP) for Third Party Administrators (TPA) this summer. TIC International Corporation was chosen to serve Local 174/WMMCA’s Trust Funds. TIC conducted a workshop for the Electronic Employer Contributions software in the WMMCA offices. As the transition progresses, the Trustees are looking forward working with their new business partner.

A VIP, Mr. Tim Bloom arrived on the scene at the Local 636 Training Center in 2014. Bloom is one of the first to take part in the UA VIP Program for Military Veterans with Local Union 636 and MCA Detroit. Bloom was placed in the 3rd period of the apprentice program based on the UA training he had already received and began employment in early December with Bumler Mechanical of Sterling Heights, MI, an Association Member of MCA Detroit. The Veterans in Piping (VIP) program offers high-quality skills training and jobs in the pipe trades to active duty military personnel preparing to leave the service. UA General President William P. Hite established the program as a means of addressing two important issues: 1. A growing shortage in the construction industry of skilled workers due to the combined effects of an aging workforce, increased demand, and lack of skills training for youth; and 2. An exceedingly high unemployment rate for US veterans, despite their being a disciplined and highly trainable population. Military and government officials have lauded VIP as a model in workforce development. Participants enroll in accelerated 18-week courses in welding and/or HVACR service, both fields experiencing an increased demand for skilled workers. They also earn industry-recognized certifications as a part of their education. Upon graduation, VIPs gain direct entry into UA apprenticeship, leading to lifelong career opportunities. All training is paid for entirely by the UA and its industry partners at NO cost to participants.

In keeping with the giving theme of the Christmas Holidays, the Bay Area Association shopped for new coats for the children and donated them to the “Coats for Kids” drive. Sixteen new coats and twelve slightly used coats were delivered in time for the cold winter season ahead. Also, the Bay Area Association participated in the “Shop with a Hero” program which helps provide a special Christmas for local children in need.
