T
hank you for the faith you have shown in me by my appointment to the Presidency of the Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors Association. I am very proud to, not only have been selected to serve, be the first woman President of MPMCA. As one of the owner’s of Hutzel Plumbing and Heating, I represent a company that is the oldest plumbing company in the State of Michigan. It gives me a unique perspective as we view the incredible changes in our businesses over the years, and anticipate new challenges. It is no different for MPMCA. The Association, which is 135 years old has made amazing improvements throughout the years. We have grown from mimeographed reports to our fullcolor magazine; old fashioned phones to cell phones and smart phones; and traveling miles and miles to get to a training session that we can now take on-line to learn about the new plumbing code. Our founding members could never have anticipated theses changes as they sat around a desk and agreed on the need to form an organization that would enable them to work together for the betterment of our Industry.

It is our job to now take up that mantel and work to continue to modernize our businesses to produce the most efficient and cost effective products and installations for our customers. From the huge new state-of-the art hospital to the energy-efficient home, we must strive to increase our knowledge and training for our employees to provide the very best to all our customers – large and small. Your Association will work to anticipate the new competitive challenges that face the plumbing/mechanical contracting industry. As we do so we need to hear from you on what our membership anticipates as some of the upcoming differences you see on the horizon. Let us know what you feel MPMCA should be accomplishing to assist you with your business on a day-today basis. Send your ideas to Cindy at the office. Your ideas will be discussed at the upcoming Board of Director’s meeting for implementation. It’s your Association, we need to hear from you. I look forward to working with our Executive Director Cynthia Maher and her Assistant Sharon as we help the Board of Directors lead the organization. Again, thank you for your confidence in me. I look forward to working with you on your important issues. We must improve regularly in our journey, because whatever success we have experienced in the past will be inadequate to allow us to exist in the future.

GLPG PENSION ROUNDTABLE The Great Lakes Peer Group Pension Roundtable was held February 26, 2014, at the Dearborn Inn in Dearborn, MI. Five WMMCA contractors: Jim Cox, Pressures & Pipes; Scott Dixon, Hurst Mechanical; Brett Lascko, Lascko Plumbing and Mechanical; Scott VanderHyde, Rite-Way Plumbing & Heating, and Jodi Vanden Berg, Advantage Mechanical Refrigeration participated in this day-long event of nationally known speakers and a roundtable session. Brett Lascko commented, “The event was well worth it.” Much thanks to the Detroit MCA who hosted this event.

MICHAEL NOVARA AND JOHN TESIJA PRESENTED “ERISA Pension Lunch & Learn PENSION WITHDRAWAL LIABILITY” LUNCH & LEARN Michael Novara and John Tesija, Local 174 Fund Attorneys, presented a lunch & learn in the WMMCA offices, titled “ERISA Pension Withdrawal Liability” on Tues. Feb., 11, 2014. Contractors heard an explanation of the reality of complex pension law in regard to withdrawal liability and more. The WMMCA appreciated this informational presentation. TECHNOLOGY UPDATE WORKSHOP HELD JANUARY 14 Dan Bulley, Senior Vice President of MCA Chicago, presented the “Technology Update for the Building Trades and Service Contractor” workshop in the WMMCA offices on January 14, 2014. Dan discussed Technology Update Workshop “How does Computer Technology Best Fit into My Operation?” LOCAL CONTRACTORS PARTICIPATE ON NATIONAL COMMITTEES Congratulations to Russ Borst (left), Hurst Mechanical Vice President of Service, on his appointment to MCAA’s International Pipes Trades Joint Training Committee. FERRIS CAREER FAIR Ryan Bennett, Local 174 Business Agent, and Cindy Morse, WMMCA, participated in the 2014 Ferris Career Fair, Feb. 13, 2014. The West Michigan Mechanical Contractors Association was established to represent and service its members in Grand Rapids, Muskegon and the Lakeshore areas of Michigan.
