BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL Keeps It Real With Cheerleaders In Cast

T

he explosive new musical comedy, BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL presented some interesting challenges during casting. Directorchoreographer Andy Blankenbuehler needed actors and dancers that could sing, dance and build human pyramids.

rigid and sharp,” says David Ranck, a former cheerleader for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets and instructor for the Universal Cheerleaders Association. “Clean lines. That’s it. Being in this show has changed everything about how I perform.” In the end, around 4,000 people auditioned for the tour.

Soon Blankenbuehler figured out that he would need to bring in the pros: Cheerleaders who worked professionally or were top competitors in college. Experienced singers and dancers handle the lead roles (So You Think You Can Dance fans will spot finalist Neil Haskell!), while a squad of 12 championship-level cheerleaders flip and fly for the jaw-dropping stunts.

There’s another authentic cheerleading connection besides the pros. The show teamed up with Varsity, a group that oversees the Universal Cheerleaders Association, which practices the frillfree, gymnastic form of the collegiate competitive sport. Varsity supplies uniforms and helped Blankenbuehler devise a mat that would provide extra spring for the tumblers without creating a double-bounce for the dancers.

The challenge for performers with cheerleading experience was not only their singing roles, The Times reported, but also the need to bring life and texture to their movements as they transitioned from NBA courts and football fields to bright, shrunken theater stages. “In cheering, everything is very

The result works, says Blumenthal Performing Arts President Tom Gabbard, who attended the opening night of BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL in Los Angeles. “When I go to a show, I spend a lot of my time listening to the

audience and watching their expressions. So much of what I need to know about whether a show is ‘working’ can be gleaned by carefully observing an audience,” Gabbard said. “One of the things that struck me about BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL was how quickly the audience was thoroughly captivated by this cast. They willingly joined the emotional journey of the cast, and were thrilled by the amazing acrobatic feats that are throughout.” Finally, the musical also has another secret weapon: The creative team features Broadway’s top tier of talent with Blankenbuehler and Lin Manuel Miranda, who worked together on In The Heights, Tom Kitt of Next To Normal and Jeff Whitty from Avenue Q.

A John Williams Spectacular

H

is music is inextricably linked to some of the most powerful scenes in cinematic history. He’s made us laugh, cry, shiver in fear and wriggle with excitement. John Williams’ film scores are some of the most recognizable and have been heard by millions in some of the biggest blockbusters in film history including Star Wars, E.T., Jaws, and Harry Potter. Without the ominous two-note motif, the terrifying opening scene from Jaws is simply a woman swimming in the ocean. The numerous themes and leitmotifs from Star Wars distinguish the heroes from the villains. The “Flight to Neverland” from Hook pulls at our heartstrings and reminds us of the ever-present child inside. On February 10 & 11, the Charlotte Symphony will perform A John Williams Spectacular. This concert

presents the audience the opportunity to experience the music behind some of Hollywood’s best-known and mostloved films. Featured in this stunning presentation of music from the big screen are selections from E.T., Harry Potter, Star Wars, Hook, Schindler’s List and more. Associate Conductor Jacomo Rafael Bairos will lead the Charlotte Symphony through the triumphant “Raider’s March,” synonymous with Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones, “Hedwig’s Theme” from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte will add their collective vocal power to works from Star Wars Episodes 1 and 3. This concert features works that will rivet listeners of all ages and provide a new kind of entertainment for the whole family. Don’t miss A John Williams Spectacular!

This March take your family on a whimsical journey to an enchanted kingdom, as the beloved childhood story of Sleeping Beauty is sure to leave audiences of all ages feeling happily ever after.

leeping Beauty’s timeless tale of a beautiful princess, a dashing prince and the triumph of good over evil with a single kiss has delighted audiences of all ages for years. In March 2012, North Carolina Dance Theatre performs Sleeping Beauty for the first time. President and Artistic Director JeanPierre Bonnefoux, who is known for creating spectacular classical ballets including Nutcracker, Cinderella and Peter Pan, is choreographing Dance Theatre’s production. “Sleeping Beauty is the essence of classical ballet, and I believe Charlotteans will enjoy the opulent sets and costumes of this spectacular performance,” said Bonnefoux.
