isual art and music have long been intertwined, and on May 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Knight Theater, the Charlotte Symphony will present a world premiere and first-ever collaboration with a visual artist combining the two disciplines. Christopher Warren-Green will lead the CSO in this exciting venture that represents a marriage of visual and musical performance art. A collaborative effort since its inception, the performance is indicative of the artistic synergy the CSO strives to foster within the community. The world-premiered artwork is a thirteen- minute animated video that will be displayed on a screen suspended above the musicians. Conceived collaboratively by New York-based artist Matthew Weinstein and Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, the artwork is choreographed to Ravel’s Bolero. Weinstein’s contemporary interpretation will reveal Bolero in a whole new way to audiences as they experience the original animation in perfect sync with the hypnotic music. Matthew Weinstein has achieved notoriety in the art world as the first artist to focus exclusively on 3D animation. Beginning with a self-written dialogue or lyrics, Weinstein uses musical scores and

written text to develop characters which he then renders by means of animation. Acclaimed by the New York Times for his “protean talent,” and “remarkable versatility as a writer, director and animator,” Weinstein was commissioned by the CSO to create this piece specifically for the orchestra. The Mint Museum of Charlotte is partnering with the CSO for this exciting event, with the presentation of a Weinstein exhibit and a lecture by author Robert Goolrick on May 3. For more information on Mint Museum events, visit mintmuseum.org. Part of the nationally acclaimed, innovative KnightSounds series, which offers a modern take on the concert-going experience, listeners will participate in a daring musical experience to stimulate and delight the senses. A tenet of the KnightSounds Series, the use of multimedia is designed to enhance and intensify the musical and concert-going experience. Listeners can enjoy a pre-concert reception while sipping cocktails and sampling complimentary Dean & Deluca hors d’oeuvre, and a post-concert activity promises to continue the artistic inspiration. Stomp STOMP, a unique combination of percussion, movement and visual comedy, was created in Brighton, U.K., in the summer of 1991. It was the result of a 10 year collaboration between its creators, Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. They first worked together in 1981, as members of the street band, Pookiesnackenburger, and the theatre group, Cliff Hanger. Together, these groups presented a series of street comedy musicals at the Edinburgh festival throughout the early ’80s. After two albums, a UK TV series and extensive touring throughout Europe, Pookiesnackenburger also produced the highly acclaimed “Bins” commercial for Heineken®. The piece was originally written and choreographed by Luke as part of the band's stage show—it proved to be the starting point for STOMP’s climatic dustbin dance. In 1986, Luke and Steve created an eightminute “percussive movie” for Bette Midler’s HBO special, “Mondo Beyondo.” Between 1987 and 1990, Luke staged, as artistic and musical director, four large scale outdoor events, including “Beat the Clyde,” which involved floating a drum orchestra on a pontoon in the center of Glasgow; the largest of these events, the “Heineken Hove Lagoon Show,” involved a hundred and twenty piece drum orchestra featuring the Brighton Festival Chorus and a full orchestral string section. In 1991, Steve and Luke first created STOMP, previewing at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre and premiering at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh, where it became the Guardian’s “Critic's Choice” and won the Daily Express “Best of the Fringe” award. Between 1991 and 1994, the original cast of STOMP played to capacity audiences around the world—from Hong Kong to Barcelona, from Dublin to Sydney. The touring culminated in a sell out season at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre in January ’94, where STOMP received an Oliver nomination for “Best Entertainment” and won “Best Choreography in a West End Show.”

An expanded version of STOMP, involving up to 30 cast members, was originally created for the Brighton Festival, U.K., and was subsequently presented in Melbourne, Australia. It was most recently seen in September ’95, open air, at the Acropolis in Athens, and at the Royal Festival Hall, London. This production broke all box office records, which had been established by Frank Sinatra in 1972. STOMP began its run at the Orpheum Theatre in New York in February ’94 and quickly went on to win both an Obie and a Drama Desk award for “Most Unique Theatre Experience.” By the summer of ’94, the first American cast was in place at the Orpheum, freeing the original cast for sell out tours of North America and Japan. In the summer of ’95, two more American productions were created for the sole purpose of U.S. touring, which continues to this day. U.S. casts have also debuted STOMP in Chile, Brazil, and Korea. Meanwhile, a fifth STOMP company, also touring from the U.K., was formed in 1997 and has consistently toured the world ever since. This company presented STOMP for the first time in Scandinavia and South Africa and has been a regular visitor to Germany, Holland, and France. Another STOMP production opened in San Francisco in May 2000 running for two and a half years. The original cast of STOMP have recorded music for the Tank Girl movie soundtrack and appeared on the Quincy Jones’ album, Q’s Jook Joint. A soundtrack recorded by Steve and Luke for the Showtime movie, Riot, was released in the Spring of ’97. STOMP has also been featured in a number of commercials, including Coca Cola’s “Ice Pick,” and numerous spots for Target stores in the U.S. and Toyota in Japan. STOMP also created the “Mr. Frear’s Ears” series of short films created for Nickelodeon, whilst “Brooms”—a fifteen minute short based around the opening routine—was nominated for an Academy Award. “Brooms” was also selected for screening at Robert Redford’s Sundance Festival and for competition at the Cannes Film Festival.

13A

stomp STOMP made a special appearance at the Academy Awards in March ’96, with an original piece involving the live synchronization of classic film clips and onstage action, featuring 20 performers from all five productions. In the summer of ’97, Steve and Luke created and directed “Stomp Out Loud,” a 45-minute television special for HBO, which combined stage material with new pieces created for TV. It was premiered in the U.S. in December ’97 and subsequently received four Emmy nominations for direction, sound mixing, multi-camera editing, and art direction. In ’98, “Stomp Out Loud” released a video and DVD around the world. Another unique blend of live action and film footage was created for the Emmy awards, in which STOMP effectively performed with Spike Jones! STOMP performed after midnight on the steps of the Lincoln memorial at U.S. President Clinton’s Millennium celebrations. During 2000, a Sesame Street special, “Let’s Make Music”—a collaboration between STOMP and the Muppets—was released on TV and video in North America. Luke and Steve began production of their IMAX movie Pulse: a STOMP Odyssey, in Brazil during Carnival 2000 and completed it in the summer of 2002. Pulse takes the IMAX audience on a spectacular global journey, featuring performances from Kodo, Timbalada, and Eva Yerbabuena. It was released to critical acclaim in New York in the autumn of 2002, and went on to win two major awards at the International Festival of La Geode in Paris. In September 2002, STOMP finally entered London’s West End at the Vaudeville Theatre, and later that year STOMP performed as part of the Royal Variety Show for the second time. In 2003, a new STOMP production opened at the Stuart Street Theatre in Boston and a unique Dolby Digital trailer featuring STOMP performances debuted in cinemas across the globe. In 2004, New York celebrated 10 years of continuous performances of STOMP at the

Orpheum Theatre by renaming 2nd Avenue at 8th Street: Stomp Avenue. In addition to the European tour, in 2005 STOMP returned to Tokyo for three weeks and also toured to Hong Kong, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur. In 2006, STOMP’s New York production passed its 5000th performance mark. In the same year, Luke and Steve directed a public service announcement for television called “STOMP OUT LITTER,” which featured the cast “sweeping up” at iconic locations in the five boroughs. In addition, they were commissioned to create and produce the Lost and Found Orchestra, which takes the ideas behind STOMP to a symphonic level, in celebration of 40 years of the Brighton Festival. The LFO subsequently performed at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Sydney Festival early in 2007 and was seen at the Royal Festival Hall in London at Christmas 2008. In 2007, “STOMP Out Loud” opened in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino with an expanded cast and performed inside a new $28 million theater specifically created for the production. STOMP’s move to the Ambassador's sees the show enter its sixth year in the West End. In 2008, STOMP returned to its roots for a new DVD shoot at the Brighton Dome theatre, bringing together a cast from all over the STOMP world. For the first time the entire show has been captured in high definition sound and video. In 2008, Steve and Luke expanded into new areas with the release of their IMAX 3D nature documentary Wild Ocean, with a symphonic mix of percussion and traditional orchestra in the soundtrack. In September of the same year Wild Ocean won two awards at the Giant Screen Cinema Association for best sound and best original score at their annual conference held in New York. STOMP itself was also reworked, adding new material. In late 2008, whilst Luke and Steve

Opera Carolina’s Spellbinding 2012-2013 Season: From Tragedy to Triumph

O

pera Carolina’s 2012-2013 Season, underwritten by a generous sponsorship from Wells Fargo Private Bank, presents a trilogy of treasured operas that merge spellbinding tales of human tragedy and triumph with some of the most majestic music from three legendary composers. This season’s productions weave stories around powerfully passionate men whose human flaws and strengths bring both palpable pathos and triumphant victory center stage. The company’s 64th season opens with the dramatic Tosca, Puccini’s moving story of power, lust and corruption. Featuring the composer’s most beautiful music, the production performs on October 13, 18 and 21 starring acclaimed soprano Jill Gardner as Flora Tosca, and Metropolitan Opera stars Raul Melo as Mario Cavaradossi and Todd Thomas as Baron Scarpia. The Magic Flute, Mozart’s playfully profound allegorical tale about man’s quest for enlightenment, follows on January 19, 24 and 26. This production brings back to Charlotte the acclaimed design work of Japanese artist Jun Kaneko, who mesmerized audiences in Opera Carolina’s Madama Butterfly in January 2012. The Magic Flute stars Butterfly prima donna Yunah Lee as Pamina, the Paris Opera’s

Shawn Mathey as Tamino, Metropolitan Opera baritone Kyle Pfortmiller as Papageno and from the Beijing Opera, bass Sun Yu as Sarastro. The season concludes with Bizet’s lyrical gem, The Pearl Fishers on April 13, 18 and 21. Opera Carolina revives its visually stunning, 2005 version of Bizet’s tale of brotherhood and sacrifice. Starring in The Pearl Fishers is Metropolitan Opera soprano Janinah Burnett at Leila, New York City Opera tenor Chad Johnson as Nadir, and Atlanta’s native son Mark Walters as Zurga. Opera Carolina continues to offer season ticket holders a 25 percent discount, plus its popular 50 percent Youth Discount to encourage adults to bring young people to the Opera, $10 Student Rush tickets, and an assortment of Group Discounts are also available. For subscription information, call 704.332.7177 x 210 or visit operacarolina.org. All performances are at the Belk Theater, North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Opera Carolina is supported by individuals and corporations throughout the region, and also supported, in part, with operating support from the Arts & Science Council. Additional support is provided by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources. Opera Carolina is a member of OPERA America.
